 JUST A GLANCE AWAY

Niki Anderson is a speaker and writer who remembers well her struggles as an eight-year-old child. She also reminds us of the importance of the church as a place of healing.

These weekly blogs started to help people discover and remember that the impact of secularism tends to blur our grasp that heaven is still here and the power of God has not disappeared. Niki is an example of that fact.

As a sick child Niki struggled with bladder and urinary infections. After a long siege, the doctor advised exploratory surgery that could have serious consequences. Her mother prayed hard and then noticed an ad in the paper about a church meeting where a missionary prayed for the sick.  At the time, the family lived in Los Angeles and had to drive across town to attend the services.

The family walked into the church and found a section reserved for people who needed specific prayer. They sat near the back. A prelude was being played and Niki sat quietly, wondering what was coming next. A women’s voice asked, “Do you want prayer?”

Niki found a soft-spoken middle-aged woman with happy, blue eyes speaking to her. “Yes,” she answered.

As their eyes met, Niki felt a surge of compassion fill her body. The sensation was clearly holy. The service continued and near the end, people were called to come forward by the missionary minister. To her surprise, when the he started to pray for her, he exclaimed “It’s me that being healed! I’ve had bleeding ulcers! When I touched this little girl, I felt the healing rush through my body!”

The next morning Niki’s parents took her to the hospital and prepared her for the operating room. She was wheeled in for the procedure to begin. After a few minutes, the doctor came out.

“I have no explanation for this, but all inflammation is gone and there is no indication of any abnormality. There is no need for surgery. It’s strange but we can only be pleased.”

Niki knew that the previous night at the church had ended her problem. The hand of God had worked through the women with the gentle, blue eyes. The church remains the best place to find God at work.

ANGELS COME IN MANY COLORS

Last week I suggested that you take Mark’s Gospel and make two columns on a sheet of paper putting what happened on one side when the event wasn’t miraculous and on the other, write when a miracle followed. My prediction was that you would discover that 60 to 70 percent of the ministry of Jesus focused on miracles. I wanted all readers to discover miracles were normative in the ministry of Jesus. BECAUSE they still are today in spite of most people not recognizing the fact.

Here’s an example.

In the Christmas season, we sing and talk about the intervention of God with the angels. Maybe one is as close as your Christmas tree.

Recently, I was talking with Lisa King-Kirkland. Lisa is a nurse in the Integris Hospital system who can slip a needle in your arm so gently you don’t even notice it. Lisa was telling me about her discovery that angels come in all different colors.

As a child, Lisa and her sisters Melanie and Angela were driving through Houston, Texas on an inter-state highway when their mother Doris Murthy missed thire turn off. Not having any idea what to do next, Doris continued down the highway. Suddenly, she noticed steam coming up under the car’s hood.  Lost in a huge metropolitan city, Doris had no idea what to do but pull off at the next exit and pray for help.

At that moment, she noticed a car following her.

When she pulled over to stop, the other car did the same. Doris was frightened. A nice looking black man got out and walked up.

“Do you need some help, ma’am,” the man asked.

“Do I ever,” Doris said. “Steam is pouring out of my car.  I’m lost, and I have three little girls in the back seat. I don’t even know how to lift the hood.”

“Let me see what I can do,”

The man walked around to the front of the car. The hood immediately raised and he began doing something underneath. After a couple of minutes, he shut the hood. “Your radiator was low. There wasn’t enough water in the pump, but I’ve got it fixed now.” He shut the hood. “Let me tell you how to get back to where you want to go. You need to get back on the inter-state going back to where you missed it.” He offered a few other important tips to get her to her destination.”

Doris sat there amazed at how quicky her problem had been solved. She realized she needed to thank him and got out of her car. There was no car behind her. There was no man who had helped. There was nothing but an empty space.

Doris couldn’t believe her eyes.

She got back in the car and said to Lisa and her sisters, “The Lord has just provided us with a real angel!”

Now years later, Lisa’s life is still touched by that experience and she certainly believes in angels. Lisa wants you to know angels come in many different colors… and to keep looking for them.

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

WHEN SLEEP COMES WITH A PROMISE

Recently a friend shared a story that touched my memory. At the time I was living in Laguna Beach, California when a nurse at the hospital called. A member of the church, she knew that I spoke Spanish and wanted to know if I could help the nursing staff with a child dying with cancer. The child’s parents came from Mexico and could not even speak Spanish. Their native language was a Zapotec dialect from the mountains in southern Mexico. Consequently, the nurse had virtually no communication with them. The staff needed help and wanted me to interpret.

The child had bumps all over her body where the cancer had created lumps under her skin. Nurse Dinah said the small girl was in considerable pain and had almost no time left. They hoped I could make some connection with the parents as well as help the child with her pain. I immediately left for the hospital, drove up the coast, and quickly found the room. I walked in with intimidation not knowing what I would find and fearing the worst. Maybe, we couldn’t communicate at all.

The parents were in tears and we fumbled with words as I tried to offer consolation. I could tell they understood little of what I was attempting to say. However, to my surprise the five-year old child and I made instant contact and we talked about their situation. I could tell that the child was actually trying to comfort her grieving parents.

“My name is Blanca” she told me and began to describe what she saw when she went to sleep.

“Beautiful people are all around me,” Blanca said. “They seem to fly and give me such comfort. I don’t seem to hurt as much when I see them.”

“Does this always happen when you sleep?” I asked.

“Yes,” Blanca said. “Always.”

With that she rolled over and took a nap. I sat quietly with her parents. In about thirty minutes she woke up. I leaned over the bed.

“Did you see the angels?”

“Oh, yes,” Blanca said. “But this time there was a man with him. I didn’t know his name, but he smiled at me with the kindest smile I ever saw. I wonder who he was.”

I thought for a moment. “If you see him again, you might call him Jesus and see if he answers to that name.”

“Okay,” Blanca said. “I will.”

She rolled over again and I could see the pain was increasing. How could one not profoundly care for this child? I just sat there praying for her relief. Finally, she rolled over again.

“He was there!” Blanca said. “Just like you said and his name is Jesus. He talked to me.”

“What did he say?”

“He said the next time I go to sleep, I don’t have to come back and my pain will be gone.”

“Wonderful,” I said. “Just wonderful.”

Blanca smiled for the firs time and then rolled over again and went back to sleep. Blanca did not wake up.

I have thought of her often over the years. In the most unexpected way, her death was actually a miracle. She saw angels and God’s provision for children who slip away in the night. For them there is no darkness.

Did not Jesus say, “whoever welcomes a child in my name welcomes me?” (Matthew 18:5)

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

A FIRESIDE CHAT

Only a divine intervention can tell us about the other side of life. Scripture gives only small hints. However, there are surprises along the way that give us pause to consider. I first discovered this story when I was in London some years ago.  It still gives me pause to think.

Then, everyone knew who C. S. Lewis, the famous Oxford Don, was through his writings. J.B Philips is not as well remembered today, but the Anglican Clergyman translated the New Testament into the Philips Translation. This first retranslation of the King James Version was a major success for decades.

Rev. Philips had drifted into poor health and felt he might not be able to continue the modernization of the Old Testament. He left his desk and sat down by the fireplace to consider his dilemma. As he was pondering the problem a familiar voice said, “I want to encourage you. You have important work to do.”

J.B. Philips had not heard his good friend C.S. Lewis enter. He assumed he had been so consumed with his personal issues that he had missed hearing the door open. He and Lewis had been close friends for years.

Dr. Lewis told Philips that he underestimated the impact his translation had all over the world and that the work was more significant than Philips realized and he must continue. The possibilities were enormous.

Philips was startled and realized that he must reconsider. Perhaps, he had allowed his health problems only to obscure his perspective. He assured Lewis he would rethink the matter. He looked back into the fire and then turned to speak. Lewis was gone.

J.B. Philips called for the housekeeper. Where had C.S. Lewis gone? She knew nothing about what he was asking. She did not see him come or go. Philips demanded she call Lewis residence for an explanation. She returned ashen-faced.

“I talked to his housekeeper,” she said. “Mr. Lewis died an hour ago.”

No one would question the integrity of either C.S. Lewis or J.B. Philips. It just happened. What shall we say? Perhaps, the unseen is more real than what we see.

SPECIAL DELIVERY IN A TIME OF NEED

Scholars debate divine inspiration and how humanity communicates with divinity. Fascinating discussions but often with little return. However, in the midst of those debates, God Almighty continues to speak in His own ways. Sometimes contact is amazingly unique. One of the reasons for these weekly blogs is to help people learn to listen from speech of God, particularly when it is unexpected.

For example…

Hunter Riddell had probably been only around six-years old when I first met him. I was building steps in our Colorado home when he came down to help. I watched him grow up and even play football in Junior High. Along the way, Hunter had some hard knocks on his head that left permanent damage. He struggled.

I was out in my yard mowing the grass when I was surprised to discover his father standing beside me. I turned the mower off and noticed that his father had a painful look on his face. Before I could ask a question, he spoke.

“Hunter died last night,” Scott Riddell said. “He died in his sleep.”

I nearly doubled over. I couldn’t believe my ears. I had to ask Scott to repeat his words. It was all too unbelievable. The twenty-two-year young man was gone. We began talking about what had happened, both of us stumbling for words. Finally, we prayed together.

As he was leaving, Scott said, “I want you to know I got a special email about Hunter a short while ago.”

Nancy Frias, one of his friends in Denver, heard what happened and began praying. As clear and audible as if someone standing by her spoke, she heard a message.  “I have Hunter here. He is safe and well. There is no more pain for Hunter. Yes, sudden death is hard but I am the Comforter. Scott and La Nore will be loved through this. Pass it on “

The message impacted Scott and La Nore Riddell with the inspiration they needed in that moment to endure their loss. God had spoken and they were comforted beyond what words can express.

Does God still speak? Everyday.

Learning to listen may be the most profitable thing you can do .

THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING

I have noticed that with many people who experience a miracle or divine intervention, a door is opened that leads to a growing relationship with God and more encounters with His  grace follow. Once people step over the line and know what is possible, they don’t go back to the empty place where they once lived.

Leslie Draper is an example.

In earlier blogs I shared some aspects of her story. Through difficult childhood abusive situations and health problems, Leslie developed an extraordinary ability to communicate with angels. Finally, she began a ministry where people come to her seeking to discover the will of God. Leslie listens to them and then seeks to hear if the angels have an answer. Sounds unusual until people have tried her capacities. They come away amazed.

Recently I was talking with Leslie and she shared a couple of recent experiences that make the point. Leslie and a couple of girl friends had taken a little retreat and rented a cabin out in the trees. The place turned out to be more rustic than they were led to believe. As the experience was unfolding, Leslie stayed in contact with the angelic realm, asking leading and protection.

The steps up the porch were fastened to cinder blocks. As Leslie walked up the steps, the cinder blocks slipped and she completely lost her balance. Her friends watched, terrified of what would happen.  After she got up, they explained what they saw. Yes, she went flying but seemed to be caught by unseen hands and floated easily to the ground. She could have broken a leg or arm, but experienced only a gentle bump.

Coming to the cabin, Leslie heard the voice of her protective angel say, “Slow.” She leaned over the seat and said to Regina, the driver, “Slow down. Danger is ahead.”

Knowing Leslie’s gift, Regina immediately hit the brakes as they topped a hill. Suddenly in front of the car were five or six deer stood in the road. At the speed they had been traveling, a serious collision would have wrecked the car. They were saved from a car wreck.

The Holy Spirit provides the gift that keeps on giving. It’s more than worthwhile to avail ourselves of the generosity of God.

 HEALING POWER

I didn’t grow up in a world where people took angels seriously. They were considered more of a figure of speech, an interesting idea, something akin to fairies. During the past several years, I have been with people who shared their experience of angels. My perception has definitely changed. I have discovered that the Bible’s description of the angelic realm turns out to be amazingly true and helpful.

Here’s an example. Kim Kosteczko of Gardiner, New York  offers insight.

Kim and her mother had always believed in angels.  The challenge came when Kim received a telephone call from a neighbor saying that her mother had fallen and had a serious injury. She rushed home and found a package at the door. Kim set the parcel aside and hurried to her mother’s side.  At the hospital, x-rays were taken that revealed the worst. Her arm had been broken in two places and needed immediately surgery. But there was another problem.

Kim’s mother could not survive surgery. With a fragile heart and lungs, she wouldn’t make it. The doctor’s only alternative was a traction brace. The best he could offer was the hope that fusion would occur. The doctor felt certain that she would have to wear a brace for the rest of her life. Not much encouragement there. Kim’s mother was deeply depressed.

Kim prayed for divine intervention and ask for the angels to help. She encouraged her mother not to lose hope because Kim assured her the angels would help.

When Kim returned home, she saw the package that had been left on the porch.  Inside she was surprised to find three angels labelled Faith, Hope, and Love. A small pillow had been embroidered with, Friends Are Angels Without Wings. Kim took the angels to the hospital for her mother’s reassurance. She took a picture of her Mom holding the angels. To her surprise, the picture turned out to be more than she expected.

When it was developed, Kim’s mother was covered with white transparent light. She knew the picture was a sign of the angels covering her with healing grace. Seeing the angels caused her mother’s depression to lift.

Six-weeks later when they went for an appointment, the doctor was shocked. Her mother’s arm was completely healed!

A VOICE IN THE NIGHT

Might God be at work when it s not clear what is going or the situation is not definable? Consider Jennifer Groesbeck’s story.

The twenty-five-year-old mother had been studying to become a medical assistant and was driving home on a dark night. The car struck a concrete barrier, went out of control, and careened off the road. Her sedan flipped over and landed upside down in a cold river that was not visible from the highway. No one saw the wreck.

Fourteen hours later a fisherman spotted the car and immediately called the police. The officers hurried to the scene and tried to ascertain what had occurred.  When they looked into the car window, they could see an arm floating in the water but little more. The severity of the wreck left the impression that no one could have survived. They started to back off and wait for a wrecker.

At that moment, they heard a woman’s voice softly pleading, “Help me, we’re in here.”

The officers immediately stopped. The words were completely clear. One man shouted back, “Hang in there! We’re trying what we can!” Other rescuers heard the plea. The police immediately plunged into the tide, trying to open the wrecked car.

With water up to their necks, the officers pushed on the overturned car trying to upright it. Slowly, they were able to tilt the car back on its side. When they looked in the windows, they were shocked. Jennifer Groesbeck had died on impact, but in the backseat was an unconscious eighteen-month-old girl hanging upside down in her car seat. The top of her blond-haired had been just inches about the water line.

But the mother died on impact. Where did the woman’s voice come from?”

Officer Tyler Beddoes maintained other rescuers had also heard the voice. Beddoes said he wasn’t a particularly religious guy but when he tried to understand what the heard, the only answer that came up was a miracle.

By the way –ever have an important hunch run through your mind in the night and wonder where that thought came from? Might surprise you if you knew.
