COULD YOU BE WALKING IN DARKNESS?

Remember that old adage, “As a man thinketh, so is he.” No one understands that better than the demonic. What’s in your mind determines what you become. And Evil never stops working on what you are thinking, your philosophy, your imagination, your objectives. If those realms can be corrupted, then the ship is on the way going down.

Take a look at what scripture says. “This is how we know who the children of God and who the children of the devil are… (I John 3:10) “We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin … and the evil one does not touch him. (I John 5:18) Let’s look at how that fact played out in history.

Nazism substituted the swastika for the Cross and the negation of the Gospels for a different way of thinking. We cannot understand how they brought the deaths of 20 million people unless we explore their ideas. The Nazi party was anti-intellectual, burning books and arresting university professors. Hitler once said, “We are often abused for being the enemies of the mind and spirit. Well, this is what we are…” The Nazis sought a formidable mutation of the human race. Hitler envisioned they were creating a new race of men physically more advanced than the world had ever seen. Divine mandates were set aside. The rise of Nazism opened the door to something “Other” that led them into battle and finally into defeat.

Nazi scientist Hans Horbiger said, “Objective science is a pernicious invention.” He also proclaimed, “How long will it be before you understand that mathematics are nothing but lies and are completely useless.” Horbiger and his associates were changing the methods and aims of science. Sound like nonsense? Yes, but look at what it produced.

When Lilian Feituch was a four-year-old child on her way to Auschwitz, the train stopped and the Nazi soldier put a gun to her forehead. Dolly Rabinowitz was on a death march to Ravensbrück when she saw her mother dragged off to a gas chamber. The stories are endless.

The Nazi idea of Aryan superiority paved the way for the murder of 6 million Jews. The common people supported the atrocities because of what they had come to believe. In a few years a totally different society that been established in Germany because of what they had come to believe. The Nazis had replaced reason with their delusions. The result? When reason disappeared, monsters appeared.

Get the picture? So, what’s the answer?

And how then do we know that we are children of God? The Apostle John had the answer. “God is love. Whosoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. (I John 4:16) Evil runs from love, love that is kind, forgiving, not self-seeking, that rejoices in the truth. Think about it. Are you walking and living in that love? It’s the key to defeating Evil.

HOW NOT TO GIVE IN TO EVIL

Everywhere people are struggling with the impact of evil. You are not alone. You are surrounded by friends worrying about the world situation, the economy, the wars. We have good reason to wring our hands. In contrast the New Testament says, “This is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith,” (I John 5:4) Holding on to that promise, we need to develop insight in how no to be deceived by the Evil One. Scripture tells us that we have three areas of vulnerability; sex, money, and power. (I John 2:16).

We need to explore each of these three areas. During the next couple of weeks, we’ll research how our failure to be perceptive can make us vulnerable to the attack of Evil. Today, let’s consider how the lust for power can make you into a victim of Evil.

Take Adolph Hitler for example. Somewhere along the way, Hitler became obsessed with the failure of Germany in World War I. In turn, his passion developed into a quest for power. His absorption with the pursuit of control swallowed him. Evil had won. What followed?

Hermann Rauschning, the Governor of Danzig, knew Hitler well. Hitler would go into ecstasy when he talked about the “new man” the Nazis were creating. But that’s only half of the story. Rauschning also observed Hitler waking up in the night screaming and in convulsions as well as seemingly to be half paralyzed. Utterly confused, he babbled away, making unintelligible sounds. Gasping, he also came to the point of near suffocation. His lips turned white and he sweated profusely. He used strange expressions hung together in bizarre disorder. Suddenly, he might scream and point, “There! There! Over in the corner! He is there!” After these outbursts, Hitler would fall asleep again and appear normal.

Hermann Rauschning recognized what was happening. He dropped out of the Nazi party and fled to Switzerland. What followed? Adolf Hitler brought the deaths of at least 20 million people during World War II.

That’s a picture of how an obsession turns into a possession. Hitler needed deliverance ministry. He chased the wrong dream.

And the lesson for us? Don’t trust leaders who want to control the world. They are evil. But first look in the mirror. Do you seek power? Oh, maybe in small doses. You know, like controlling your friends, relatives, others? That’s where the problem starts. Right now, disavow domination or any desire to be above or control other people. Ask the Holy Spirit to cleanse those tendencies out of your life. What should your objective be? Jesus said, “Store up for yourself treasures in heaven where moth and rust do not destroy. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:20-21) That’s what you’re after!

WHEN DEATH CAME TO THE DOOR

People are unaware of a serious issue. Why were 20 people killed at Lake Arcadia in Oklahoma by a shooter this week? Why was there an attempt on the White House the week before? Why did a 6 year-old boy shoot his first- grade teacher? Why is there constant violence? A problem with the drinking water? Of course, as silly as that sounds, our social awareness has dropped to such a level because the nation has lost awareness of the source of depravity.

We must recover a sense of the actual origins of such destruction. We will begin an ongoing exploration of how the intervention of the Holy Spirit can help us endure difficult encounters with evil. Strugglers desperately need the higher road.

Here’s an example.

(Name changed for anonymity) Rev. George Blair received a phone call from a desperate mother. Her son was out of control and she was frightened. The desperate woman didn’t know what to do and sounded frantic. She blurted out, “I heard you people can help with such a problem. It’s my son. Gone plum crazy. Please come and help me!”

The minister drove across the city to a small outskirt and an old house. When he went in, the home felt damp. The mother rushed forward and tugged on his coat. “My son’s gone over the edge. He terrifies me! He’s 18 and disturbed. Getting stranger by the hour! Please help us!” She pointed down the hall. “His name is Alvin.”

George started down the narrow hallway when the young man leaped out from the doorway stark naked. Alvin glanced at the minister and then darted into the room and slammed the door. George pushed the bedroom door open, but didn’t see the young man. Suddenly the door hit George. Alvin was standing behind it holding a butcher knife over his head.

“I will kill you.” Alvin screamed and held the knife even higher ready to stab.

George swallowed hard. “No!” He tried to sound unafraid although his heart was pumping frantically. “I have come in the name of Jesus.”

Alvin stared with confusion in his eye, but kept pumping the large blade up and down like at any moment he would stab.

George called aloud for the Holy Spirit to impart peace. He continued telling Alvin that God had a better plan for his life. ‘Don’t let Evil stay in control and make you do something that will ruin the rest of your life.’ He kept praying.

Some of the time Alvin screamed. At other moments, he wept, but he kept swinging the knife.

The pastor continued praying for the Holy Spirit to intervene. He continued talking and interceding for 6 hours. Finally, Alvin sunk to his knees and handed George the knife. A tragedy had been averted because the hand of God moved. You have the same capacity to thwart Evil. Don’t hesitate to call on the Holy Spirit to shackle the Corrupter.

But this isn’t the whole story. Next week I will tell you what followed. There’s more to come.
