WITCHES IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD?

A couple of weeks ago, I walked into a local restaurant and noticed the server had a pentagram hanging around his neck. Chancing he might be offended, I asked, “Are you a witch?” He looked at me hauntingly and said, “I wish!” Are witches around? You bet.

While Halloween raises the issue, this isn’t about the holiday. In 1990, there were around 800 Wiccan Witches in the country. The most recent estimate projects there are now 800,000. That’s a garage full!

Here’s how the growth works.

Last week a friend noticed that the cosmetic shop she frequented had crystal and strange objects everywhere as well as a large pentagram on the front door. Ralph, the rather effeminate owner, kept talking about the latest beauty offerings while also chattering about Wicca and what this strange organization could do for the customers. My friend tried to invite him to church but he resisted vehemently. Didn’t like churches in any form!

In the mist of this, one of the customers stated that she was having trouble with her estranged husband and wanted him to stay away. Ralph had a suggestion. “Bring me a lock of his hair and I’ll fix your problem. A few days later, the women returned with a cutting of hair.

“I’ll drop the hair in this jar with a special solution I make up,” Ralph explained. “That’ll do the trick. He’ll stay away.” Apparently, the man didn’t come back.

My friend found this disturbing and decided to check out Ralph on the internet. To her shock, good old Ralph had a website selling a wide assortment of products for witches and witchcraft. Ralph was a full-fledged witch… or warlock.

Laying movies and folklore aside, Wicca witchcraft is spiritual rebellion and resistance to our heavenly Father, often manifesting through curses, hexes, incantations, or subtle words of judgment against others. The Bible warns that witchcraft is detestable to God and incompatible with His will (Deuteronomy 18:10-14, Galatians 5:19-21) Battling witchcraft involves spiritual vigilance, prayer, scripture, and the use of God’s authority to protect your mind, heart, and life from spiritual attacks. Keep your eyes open. Take it seriously.

We’re not carving a pumpkin or decorating with dried corn stalks. We are dealing with a spiritual force in today’s world, a creation from the dark side. Long after Halloween, take seriously that these forces are still hard at work.

Protect yourself by staying all from all such expressions. Keep your eyes on only one source of blessing, your heavenly Father.

WITCHES ARE COMING! REALLY?

Halloween’s just ahead and that means the witches will be flying. Hmm? Better check out the details. First, get rid of Hollywood and those horror movies. Put away the superstitions about flying on broomsticks and get real.

A recent edition of The Christian Post claimed there are more witches today than there are Presbyterians. The movie “Practical Magic 2” recently released on September 11, sold $50 million in tickets.

Apparently, the current mood is about justifying revenge, including using hexes and curses. The current shift is toward Wicca, the modern form of witchcraft. A nature-oriented religion with both a Goddess and a God. Wicca uses ritual magic and seasonal celebrations. Should you pay attention to this rise in popularity? The Nazis did.

Heinrich Himmler created the dreaded Schutzstaffel or the SS that ran Hitler’s dead camps. In 1934, Himmler took over Wewelsburg Castle with the goal of creating a School of Occult Sciences. He even created a round table like King Arthur’s. On of Himler’s departments was Witchcraft Special Assignment. The SS leader believed that witches were the heirs of ancient German wisdom so Himler searched for their secrets.  He turned up a guy named Karl Maria Willigut who had theories about witchy, mystical truths. When good old Karl turned out to be schizophrenic, he was quietly shuffled off to a mental hospital.

Were they all crazy and fanatics? Nazism was certainly filled with such. The point is that the highest-ranking officer and creator of the SS pursued witchcraft and the dark arts as a means to power. The result? The SS murdered six million Jews and were part of a war that killed 60-75 million people.

Are witches a Halloween joke? Hardly. Take them seriously and stay downwind from Wicca or similar groups no matter what they promise. Evil has never hesitated to lie and deceive. You wouldn’t dabble with arsenic; don ‘t fool with anything that smells like witchcraft. The ancient Old Testament warned a long time ago, “You shall not allow a sorceress to live. (Exodus 22:18) Take it seriously as it can affect and effect your life.

VEXATIONS! REALLY?  

            For several weeks, we have been exploring how evil entices people like spiders luring a fly into their web.  We’ll take another look and examine our awareness of how good people can fall victim to bad things. I’ll bet you’ve never heard of vexations?

            When people are under direct evil attack, they may discover marks on their bodies.
Sometimes they look like scratches and the person can’t understand where they came from. The attack may be more serious resulting in bruises or burns. The individual has no idea where those purple blotches originated.  In rare violent cases, even a bone could be broken. Sounds far out? Certainly, but when people are already struggling mentally or emotionally, they may not pay careful attention to what’s happening around them.

            My point? Don’t underestimate the persistence and ferocity of Evil. When the demonic finds a vulnerable victim, it won’t give up easily. Once a person is fully possessed by Evil, they are marked and recurrent attacks have to be dealt with.

            Let’s consider several more tendencies that signal the demoniac hordes are after someone. They may feel drawn toward excess. For reasons beyond hunger or physical need, they want to gorge themselves and do. Even picking up excessive weight won’t slow them down. Very similar, many begin to isolate themselves. The person can withdraw from normal relationships.  Trouble is ahead.

            Jack and Mary Sloan were happily married but couldn’t conceive a baby. A friend suggested they visit with Madame Alice (anonymous name) who specialized in crystals, herbs, strange concoctions, as we’ll as private counseling. Alice liked her and got into the Madame’s program full force.

            As time went by, Jack began to notice that Mary was taking on characteristics that she’d never had before. Mary became irritable, sullen and wouldn’t express herself as she had done previously. She shunned her old friends and hid in the bedroom. Finally, Jack noticed unusual bruises inside her arms. Mary was rushed to a pastor who had the knowledge to pray for such a problem. After a couple of session, Mary recovered.

            Take Evil seriously and stay aware that you are a target. Don’t allow unexpected tendencies to lead you down a blind alley that turns into a dead-end street. God’s plan is to keep you from these distractions. Remember Peter’s advice; “Your enemy the Devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (I Peter 5:8)

HUNTING SEASON IS NOW OPEN

          One of the thrills of Fall is duck season and hunters will be in their blinds ready to shoot. And if you haven’t noticed. The demonic bad boys are out in force hunting at this time of year and they have a license with your name on it.

We’ve been exploring the rather ordinary unnoticed ways that cause people to become vulnerable to Evil’s attacks. How are so many people caught up in becoming the target for seduction? Sure, it’s easy to list all the lurid and licentious lustful possibilities, but that may hide the more common everyday ways that we get into trouble.

          Let’s add a bit more to the last three episodes. How about constantly feeling irritable or reactionary? Sure, habits and people can be annoying, but I’m talking about constantly feeling angry or wanting to attack when someone says something that we don’t agree with. I’m describing a day in and day out being out of sorts. That attitude creates an opening in our mind and makes us vulnerable to Evil’s hunting season. What we must recognize is a negative and destructive tendency developing. The demonic loves finding someone who is perpetually angry and argumentative, Evil can hide behind the defensiveness.

          If I named this person, you’d know her immediately. She joined Anton LeVey’s Satanist Church.  The woman’s problem was that in her roles as a Hollywood actress she was constantly annoyed by the script’s offered her. She was impossible for the staff to work with. Nothing suited her. Finally, she got angry with her attorney and boyfriend and put a curse on him. The irony of her story is that she and he were both killed in a car wreck. Her annoyances and irritation led to a dead-end stop.

Extreme? Certainly. But can you sense an opening that might have been created in your mind and heart?

          Here’s what scripture says. “In your anger do not sin; Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.” (Ephesians 4:25) Time to close hunting season and make sure you’re not a target. Make sure the joy of the Lord fills your days and annoyances will fade and disappear.

THE WAR’S NOT OVER

            The last two episodes explored how we can know when Evil is after us. A number of friends responding wanted to know more about detecting an attack of Evil. So, let’s look again. You need to realize that the struggle with evil never ceases and YOU are still in their gunsight!

            (By the way, when I capitalize Evil, I’m talking about the various names that the Bible used for the devil, Satan, Lucifer, Beelzebub, Belial, Asmodeus, Azazel, Abaddon, and so forth. When evil is low case, I’m describing the destructive actions of the demonic.)

            Here’s another way that the war is on.  Ever feel disconnected from a sense of peace? It’s possible to discover that there’s nothing inside you seems to be right. You’re not upset, but you feel unsettled, restless, disconnected from well-being. Often, people who end up addicted to drugs start searching for a “high” to make them feel okay again. You wouldn’t think of the loss of ease as part of a warfare, but that’s one way our Enemy begins to work. Something is wrong, out of place, and we’re uneasy and look for relief.

            Jack and Maria were a happily married young couple but had a problem. Maria couldn’t conceive. The problem left them with a sense that something was out of place. They had plenty of money, a nice house, and were satisfied with their physical situations, but… but…they lacked a sense of peace. A friend suggested that they see a woman named Madam Gisell Sabrina… or whatever her real name was. Madam Gisell was big on crystal balls, cosmic astrology, herbs, and giving Maria ideas she’d never thought of.  Maria was enthusiastic and dug in.

            A new problem developed when Jack noticed Maria was becoming erratic and had weird ideas popping up in her head. The lack of peace turned into bizarre behavior, turning their world upside down. It took a number of prayer and deliverance sessions with the pastor and a prayer team before she was freed. They were victims of demonic warfare.

            If you start to feel like a sense of peace is sliding away, pause and remember where real peace comes from. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)

            There’s your answer to the warfare. If you feel a sense of well-being slipping away, the answer is that you need to renew your relationship with the Author of All Peace. In contrast to the world, no circumstance will diminish what He gives. That’s how you win the war.

ATTACK TIME!

ATTACK TIME! 

            In the previous exploration of how evil affects people, we discovered that one of the strategies that every last one of us faces is personal attack. The demonic world has your name and knows almost more about you than you know about yourself. Evil is perpetually after YOU.

            Yeah, I know that sounds like Halloween, but it is a fact. The Scripture warns us to be aware. “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” (Ist Peter 5:8) In previous generations, we took this as a general warning to put in the back of our mind for extreme circumstances. I’m sorry to tell that the extreme circumstances are here!

            We are now witnessing a renewed attack of evil across the world in all institutions and under every circumstance. Hate to tell you… but that includes YOU.

            So, how can you know when Evil has you in the gun sights? Last week we explored how our thinking can be attacked. Let’s add to that list.

            A slow creeping feeling begins to grow in your mind and you feel drawn to something that you know is wrong. The urge becomes stronger until you finally act in a way that you know you shouldn’t. How does Evil begin an attack on you? By using the insignificant as a weapon.

I once had a Roman Catholic nun come to me for help because she was haunted by something she had done in the 2nd grade. She stole a friend’s pencil and that opened a door to being haunted by evil virtually ever since. Didn’t amount to anything but the action didn’t leave her mind – for years.  Sound silly? Not to a struggling good woman. The Evil One used her kind heart and sincerity as an opening for attack. A little thing stuck in her conscience and grew into a monster. Strange but makes the point. Starts small; grows bigger. Finally, defeats.

            Everyday we feel urges like “cheat on your income tax, stretch the truth, take more than you have coming to you, tell a little lie, just cheat a little on a test, on and on.” You tell yourself that it can’t hurt you and no one will know anyway. Google your next-door neighbor and feel lust, become so angry you are ready to do a former friend bodily harm etc. etc… Eventually that little thought begins growing.

 Take a look at your life and develop the list of what is pulling on you when you know the action is wrong.

            Sound small? Sure. That’s how it all beings. Remember that old song “Little Things Mean A lot.”  Evil certainly does and begins attacking us with what is trivial. The Apostle Peter offered this advice. “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. Be self-controlled and alert (Ist Peter 5:7-8). That’s an important way you can avoid “attack time.”

DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU’RE UNDER ATTACK? 

            Would you recognize a demonic attack when it’s coming straight at YOU? The truth is that most of us never give that possibility a thought. Couldn’t happen to me! Well, remember the six-year-old boy who shot his teacher in the classroom? How about those numerous attacks on students in universities? The death of innocent young women? Anyone see that coming?

            The fact is that we are all vulnerable. Happens everyday and has been happening to you whether you recognized it or not. Because we struggle daily with this problem, we must adjust our spiritual radar to recognize when an attack is coming in. You can equip yourself to realize when the Enemy is zeroing in on you. Let me share a recent experience.

            Mike and Ruth had taken a trip to Austria and were visiting an important monastery. Gottweig Abbey dated back to 1083. The monastery still offered a significant witness to the presence of Christ in the best and worst of times.

            The guide had taken then inside one of the buildings that had important medieval paintings. They walked up to the second story of the stone building for a closer look at the painting that covered the vast ceiling. As they looked, the strangest thought crossed Mike’s mind. What if he rushed forward and pushed the guide over the railing? She would fall two stories to her death. All he needed to do was flip her over.

            What a bizarre thought standing in the midst of an ancient house of prayer!  Still, the thought became an impulse. He was actually contemplating pushing the woman to her death. As he tried to reject such a heinous thought, the idea became an urge. Mike felt himself pulled toward attacking her.

            At that moment, he realized his mind was under fire. Evil had created this impulse in him. He immediately but silently prayed, “Gracious Father, Lord Jesus, please stop this demonic attack. Please cast out the deadly entity and free me.” He closed his eyes and prayed as the guide lectured. The deadly impulse immediately vanished. In an instant the impulse disappeared.

            Could such happen to you? Sure, probably has. The answer is to turn from yourself and focus on the provision of the heavenly Father. I John 3:8 says, “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.” You can depend on that fact to pertain to you.  Be prepared for demonic impulses to appear. Recognize them for what they are: an attack. Turn to your Savior and He will set you free. That’s your answer!

A PSYCHIATRIST IN THE DARKNESS

A PSYCHIATRIST IN THE DARKNESS

            Could a psychiatrist be invaded by Evil? We put our total confidence in the medical profession so we conclude nothing like that could occur. Sorry, wrong answer. Twilah A. Fox, M.D. has a practice in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her story can be found in her book On Deliverance. Her candor helps us gain an even deeper understanding of how Evil is constantly at work in anyone.

            Hey, wait a minute. Aren’t psychiatrists suppose to diagnose craziness? Yes, and Dr. Fox helps us grasp the difference between crazy and possession.

            During her medical training, Twilah went from being agnostic to atheistic. The name “God” had become distasteful to her and she avoided referring to Him at all cost. Twilah dabbled in the occult and astrology. She kept things like Tarot Cards and even a crystal ball around her house. However, during her study of Oriental religions, she began to sense that there were gurus or so-called holy men that knew something she had missed.  Twilah set out on a journey to talk with such types, but found that they basically disappointed her. In her hotel room in Acapulco, Mexico, she began turning to Jesus Christ as the possible answer.

            A friend named Joan started teaching Twilah about deliverance ministry. While they were talking, Joan sensed something was wrong in the house and went for the crystal ball. Joan insisted they destroy the object. As she and Twilah hammered the crystal into a thousand pieces, for the first time, Twilah discovered she began to recover relief from her oppression.

            Joan insisted they immediately go to Dr. Fox’s office. A special Power seemed to be guiding Joan. As they moved around Twilah’s work area, Joan kept praying. Slowly Twilah realized what was motivating Joan was the Holy Spirit. Joan reached into the doctor’s bookcase and pulled out books on the occult and astrology. They had to go as well.

            Three days later, Joan returned and explained that sensations like constant yawning, strange twitches, sudden crying, coughing could be a sign of demonic entities leaving her body. The Holy Spirit brought to Joan’s mind the names of evil spirits that had been inhabiting Twilah and she started casting them out. One by one, Twilah sensed their leaving. Finally, Twilah knew when the last entity was gone.

            Filled with relief and gratitude, she began weeping. Her long stretch of suffering was over. She was free of the assaults and impact that had haunted her for years. Twilah knew well the difference between crazy and possession.

            Demonic entries can slip in without our realizing what is happening. Strange thoughts, compulsions, disruptive action, on and on, the list extends for the incalculable ways evil can affect us. If so, the time has come to call on the Holy Spirit to cleanse our lives, to set us free, just as the Lord Jesus Christ did for Twilah. Don’t think you are crazy when you simply need deliverance.      

            Remember: miracles never cease!
