WHEN THE NIGHT IS TOO DARK

The most effective argument that Satan ever devised is that he doesn’t exist. The minions of Evil operate most effectively when people don’t believe they are waiting around the corner. When people attribute the reasons for destructiveness only to ‘bad decisions’ or ‘a lack of good,’ they themselves become vulnerable. The scripture tells us that the facts are quite the opposite! Evil is real and comes with a legion of vicious spirits.

Recently an Anglican priest discovered this was true.

Al Martin (anonymity for privacy) had served the Episcopal Church faithfully for a good number of years. Somewhere along the way, something happened that he couldn’t understand and didn’t know how to deal with.

“I have this problem,” Al said cautiously. “My mind seems to be filled with lustful thoughts. I fight it, but these salacious thoughts keep returning. I try not to look at women sensually, but the impulse is always there. I don’t know what to do.”

“When does this most often happen?” I asked.

“The attack is worst at night. Around 2:00, maybe 3:00. Every night. I have these vile dreams. When I wake up, I always feel guilty even though I haven’t done anything. These dreams happen completely out of my control. The problem begins in the dark and continues there.”

The source of the problem? Somewhere along the way Al Martin had picked up what’s been called an incubus spirit that also particularly works on women. In the past, this evil entity has been credited with causing sexual assaults as well as spiritual corruption. European history postulates that these entities feed on desire and emotional intensity. The incubus spirit works especially at night. Al’s problem at 2;00 and 3:00 was the giveaway clue.

Strangely enough, the incubus spirit has also been related to people who dabble in occult practices. Ouija boards, Tarot cards or people who use occult practices to damage others can all become part of the problem. As I discussed that context, Al remembered a strange woman who periodically came to his church and sat in the rear, not participating in the worship. She sat there and glared at him before leaving early. Al wondered if that could be part of the problem. Definitely.

Al knelt on the floor and I began praying for him. Using one of the ancient liturgies of the church, I cast out the incubus spirit. After several minutes, Al felt immediate relief. The spirit was gone.

Having trouble sleeping, struggling with destructive or vile thoughts? Maybe you’ve had help from the other side and didn’t know it. The spirits of the night cannot stand the light of day. Jesus is the Light that dispels all darkness. Seek Him as the answer.
