WHEN THE ANGEL APPEARED…

            Encountering an angel might not be considered a miracle, but it would certainly be a show stopping experience!  I possibly run into more angel encounters than any other miracle story. Their appearances stand out as a testimony to the supernatural dimension that exists just beyond our touch. They are certainly here and around all the time. Nothing jars an agnostic like discovering an angel at work in his or her own life. Here’s a couple of examples of what experiencing the angelic can mean.

            Carol Sintay was a regular church member and worship was part of her life. Her trip for a medical check-up produced a shocking result. A large tumor was discovered on one of her ovaries. The physician was certain Carol had cancer. The doctor believed the growth had attached to her colon and possible other internal organs. Even though she was in the middle of a semester in her master’s degree program, the doctor saw no other alternative. Three surgeons concurred that Carol must be operated on immediately.

            When the word spread about her impending disaster, the elders in Carol’s church came to pray. Gathering around her bed, they anointed her with oil, and prayed for healing. They called on the angels to protect and guide her. She was ready for the operation.

            As the three surgeons opened her body, they couldn’t understand what they were not seeing. There was no tumor. The surgeon who had clearly seen the growth on an ultrasound projection as well as on an x-ray searched frantically for the tumor. It was simply gone.

            Do these interventions happen all the time and we just don’t hear about them? Often people just don’t know what to say after an encounter. Sometimes they fear people will conclude they are whacko. Actually, they are the sanest of all.

 Here’s another example. After a serious car wreck, Mary (a pseudonym for privacy sake) was rushed to intensive care and not expected to live. After several days, a visitor was allowed into ICU. To her surprise, Mary looked fine and far from what the doctors expected.

            The friend inquired how she was doing. Mary said in a straight forward manner. “I’m going to be okay. An angel has been sitting at the foot of the bed all day.”

            Most of the time, our experience of angels is indirect or unrecognized. But those moments happen like Carol and Mary discovered. Recipients know their lives will never be the same again. Next time you find yourself in a bind, don’t hesitate to call on your guardian angel to help. We all have one. Your friend will be there.

An Angel told her this…

            Beck Hobbs kept having premonitions of a bad car wreck. Around Christmas time, her worried increased that some disaster might be ahead. She would even wake up in the dreaming of  the impending crash, but nothing happened and she blew the worry off.

            Becky’s birthday was January 24 and she was thinking about that celebration when it felt like somebody was tugging on her sleeve. The pull felt like she was being directed to leave the house and stand in the front yard. At 3:00 in the morning that didn’t seem like a good idea but she gave in.

            Standing there looking at the sky, she cried out, “What do you want me to know?” A booming physical voice answered, “Be careful, this may be your last birthday.”

            Even though the voice was commanding, for some reason this sudden call didn’t frighten her. She sensed the voice meant to help her. However, that one sentence of warning was all she heard.

            The next day, Becky left for Alabama to play for a police benefit. After the concert she loaded up her equipment, got in the van and the driver took off. They had just come to an inter-section when she looked up and saw an eighteen-wheeler van barreling down on her.

            “God help us!” she cried. “He’s not going to stop!” She cried for the driver to stop. Becky remembered that voice in the night and screamed, “Hit the brakes!” The driver of the eighteen-wheeler came sliding into Becky’s vehicle. The collision sent Becky’s van spinning, but they were alive.

            The police investigating the accident said, “A split second saved your life. One more second and you’d all been killed.”

            At that moment, Becky remembered the voice in the night and realized who it was. An angel had spoken and prepared her to be ready for the accident. The voice was her guardian angel. After reflecting, Becky felt she had a goal to help others learn to listen to the voice of their angel.

            In communicating with people like Becky, I’ve learned that often we have an unexpected thought, a nudge, an idea that comes out of nowhere and that might possibly be our guardian angel directing us. At such moments, we can stop and pray, “Are you there? Can you speak to me? What do you have to tell me?” You might be surprised by what you discover.

            Remember miracles never cease.

THEY DIDN’T BELIEVE IN MIRACLES UNTIL…

            Living in a secular society in what now appears to be a post-Christian culture, these numbers may surprise you. In Lee Strobel’s The Case for Miracles, his research found that 67% of the American public believe in miracles.  Startling as it may be, 38 % say they have experienced a miracle. That amounts to 94,792,00 Americans who claim such an event happened to them! Over half believe that the miracles described in the Bible actually happened as they are described. What percent don’t believe in miracles? Only 15%!

            Here’s an example why people believe.

            For anonymity sake, let’s call the family “the Smith’s” with a son named Will. Coming home from church, a ten-year old Will was playing with the car’s backdoor handle when he accidently depressed it and the door flew open. As the car sped down the street, Will was thrown out onto the pavement. A deadly calamity!

            Horrified! The parents whirled the car around, expecting to find Will laying on the street terrible injured … possibly dead. To their surprise, the boy was standing there unharmed! Mrs. Smith rushed out of the car screaming, “What happened?”

            “Didn’t you see the man?” the boy explained. “The man who caught me.”

            There was no man.

            Badly shaken, Will’s father took out a handkerchief to wipe his eyes. He could hardly speak. How could this escape from death be explained? Mr. Smith said, “There’s no doubt in my mind that an angel caught him.”

            The Smith family joined that 67% who believe and the 38% who experienced a miracle. Believe in miracles? The odds will be in our favor. Join up.

THE CRASH LEFT NO HOPE UNTIL

            “Mrs. Black?” the voice on the phone said. “Yes.”

            “This is St. Joseph’s hospital in Burbank. I’m sorry to tell there’s been an airplane crash. One man was killed and there are only two survivors in critical condition. One of them is your son.”

            She listened in stunned silence. This can’t be happening!

            Dale Black had gone down. As a pilot, he had flown all over the country.  Now he lay unconscious on a hospital bed with his life slipping away. The tragic seemed inconceivable but Dale Black appeared to be at the end of his life.

            But where was he?

            In the story of his life, Dale Black’s book Flight to Heaven (Bethany House Publishers) tells the astonishing story of what happened to him in that hospital room. As the trauma team worked feverishly, Dale felt detached and then realized he was floating up to the ceiling where he could look down on what was happening below him.  Leaving his mangled body behind, memories flooded in. Dale remembered as a boy at a summer church camp he had asked Jesus Christ to be his Lord and Savior then as that memory faded, he flew away from the hospital room, leaving his body behind. Where was he going?

            Dale Black started down a narrow pathway. An incandescent beam illuminated his way. He seemed to be travelling at an enormous rate of speed when abruptly, Dale discovered he wasn’t alone. Two angels were alongside. Then he realized that he was approaching a magnificent city filled with wonderful light. Dale intuitively knew he belonged in this place of overpowering beauty. Wonderful colors of all shades danced in the air. Iridescent grass overflowed with beautiful flowers. The glow and energy of a brilliant light danced in all directions and yet, Dale could look at the light without hurting his eyes. Glorious music filled the air while millions of people moved in the light and swayed to the music.  The sound was a combination of singing and instruments in a wonderous blend of harmony and cooperation. Worship of God was the heart and focus of the music. Intuitively, he knew Jesus, the Word, held it all together.

            Never had Dale Black felt such overwhelming peace.

            In the following weeks after returning to his body, Dale heard the doctors predict he would never fly again. Believing in the promise in the book of James, Dale called for the elders to pray over him and his condition. The recovery and rehabilitation were not easy, but his faith and the vision of what he seen carried Dale forward. Dale knew he’d been to heaven and come back. He would fly again … now … and finally then.

            On the twenty-fifth anniversary of the crash, Captain Dale Black sat behind the controls of a United Airlines Boeing 747. Would you like to fly with him? Just take the same path and walk in the same footsteps.

MIRACLE AT A GAS STATION

Suddenly it’s 2024… with a lot of fog settling around. This new year is filled with old problems. Political division, crazy accusations, homeless people in tents, war in the Middle East and the assault on Ukraine … on and on it goes like a bad movie.

But wait! Divine interventions are still happening everywhere. My file with over 300 interviews with people who had miraculous encounters is an example of promise. In the midst of the social and national confusion, angels could be waiting on your doorstep. That happened to Junior Neese.

Junior had been a decorated football player and graduated from high school without learning to read or write. With a heart for the poor, his limitations sent him down a difficult road. Nevertheless, Junior was touched by the Christian faith and wanted to serve.

On this particular day, he was traveling from Oklahoma City to Mobile, Alabama when Junior stopped for gas and noticed a homeless man walking toward him. Looking like a tramp, the man walked up and wanted to hitch a ride. Junior was hesitant, but felt he should help anyone who looked so disposed. He told the man to climb in.

About 15 minutes into the trip, the vagabond began telling him facts about Junior’s life. He recited incidences that had created pain and disappointment for Junior. The man talked about details that no one could possibly know. Junior clutched the steering wheel tightly as tears ran down his cheeks. The passenger kept revealing intimate facts from his past. How could such be?

Then, the wanderer began to speak words of compassion and love. Junior could sense each consolation sinking in to the very depths of his soul. The traveler’s words were healing, erasing the sting of old hurts and rejection. The man kept speaking of God’s love and forgiveness, telling Junior how much his heavenly Father loved the poor and those who cared for the needy.

The drive from Oklahoma City to Memphis takes about seven hours, but time seemed to evaporate. Junior lost all sense of time. When he reached Memphis, it seemed only minutes had passed. However, the needle on the fuel gauge said he needed gasoline. Junior pulled in next to a pump, leaving the shabby-looking man in the front seat waiting for him. He quickly filled the tank.

Junior opened the car door to get in. The man had disappeared. He was simply gone and the side door had not been opened. Hebrew 1:14 raced through his mind. “Angels are only servants… spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.”

Junior Neese knew the man disguised as a bum had actually been an angel. An angel sent to give him consolation and peace. A real, live angel had brought him peace. Junior’s life was changed.

Hebrews tells us that many have entertained angels unaware. Could that happen to you? Most certainly! Keep your eyes … and your heart open.

ANGELIC INTERVENTIONS SAVE THE DAY!

            Americans believe in angels!  Along with convictions about heaven and prayer, 67% of the entire population believe in angels. Of those with a religious affiliation, 84% believe in the angelic realm. You’re in a popular crowd if you affirm the same.

            As I wander around the countryside picking up experiences of divine intervention, I often run into people who have had encounters with angels – which is certainly miraculous. Recently, I ran into a story about an encounter that happened to Sarah Loutner in Springfield, Tennessee. Today, Sarah Loutner is a dancer and performs routines with a Christian message. At the time, Sarah was only a small child.           

            The Loutner family lived in an old two-story farm house. Like any older house that had been built years before, the staircase was steep. As was the custom in by-gone days, the stairs angled up partway to a landing, then turned 90 degrees before going up the rest of the way to the top. Sarah had a special place upstairs where she played with her toys. On this afternoon, she tired of playing with the dolls and wondered what her mother might be doing. Probably, she was down in the kitchen where cookies might be waiting. Sarah pushed the playthings aside and hurried toward the steps.

            Pre-occupied in thinking about where her mother might be, Sarah didn’t pay attention to the abruptly sloping stairs. Her feet got tangled up, and Sarah fell head first down the plunging steps.

            Like a scene in a slow-motion movie, Sarah discovered a figure standing on the landing. The man towered above the steps. Big and powerful, he appeared to be surrounded by a shimmering glow. The light swirled around him and Sarah immediately felt reassurance that she didn’t have to be afraid.

            To her total surprise, Sarah realized that she was not falling, but seemed to be floating toward the unknown figure on the landing.  Unseen hands carryied her downward until finally her feet landed gently on the floor. She knew that an angel had intervened to save her.

            When she looked up, the angel was gone. Sarah ran to tell her mother what had happened. She listened, but Sarah distinctly felt she didn’t believe her. Years later, when Sarah, her brother Aaron, and her mother got off on the subject of angels, Sarah recounted the experience. This time her mother was convinced a guardian angel had indeed intervened, but wasn’t sure why an angel would have secured her.

            Sarah’s brother Aaron immediately added, “You’re a dancer! You were caught so you could dance for God.”

            Just thinking about her brother’s response, makes Sarah want to dance today. You also have a guardian angel. No matter what you are struggling with, just thinking about that protection might do the same for you!

THE SKY OPENED AND …

            We were discussing miraculous events when Barbara Yates eyes lit up. “I’d almost forgotten what happened to a friend of mine,” she said. “Jody Hubbard lives in Denver and her experience happened in the Fort. Logan cemetery West of the city. I’ll never forget the moment.”

            I listened as Barbara described how years earlier her friend had the amazing experience that imparted a vibrant faith. Jody Hubbard had been born with “a lazy eye” problem. As time progressed, the eye problem deteriorated. When her eye sight suddenly vanished, Jody was rushed to the hospital emergency room. The doctor diagnosed a macular hemorrhage. In his many years of practice, he had only one patient regain their vision. Jody was given a negative prognosis.

            Jody Hubbard began to pray. Two and a half years later, to the surprise of the doctor, her sight simply returned! Jody knew she had experienced a miracle and developed a faith in what was possible.

            Years later Jody’s husband Bud Hubbard developed ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and passed away. During the time she tried to help him, even though Jody learned patience, time still took its toll. Days after the burial in the Ft. Logan military cemetery, Jody and Barbara returned to the grave site. Jody came with a sense of urgency about needing to visit the cemetery. Her love for Bud had been so deep, she needed to stand there again.  The two women walked over to the grave and stood silently for several moments. Knowing how emotional this was for her friend, for privacy sake Barbara walked away to leave Jody standing by the grave weeping.

            Even though she was standing some distance away, Barbara could hear Jody began to cry out.  “Bud, I need to know if you are alright! Please! I need to hear from you. Are you okay?”

            To her amazement, the clouds begin to move into an unexpected formation. Carefully, the haze shifted into a clear shape. To Jody’s astonishment, the form was exactly that of an angel with wings.

            “Barbara! Can you see the sky? What do you see?”

            “Good heavens! That’s an angel!” Barbara cried out.

            As the two women looked, a band of colors like a rainbow began to form above the angel. Jody had her answer.

            When Barbara Yates first told me this story, she said, “I would never have believed if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes. The clouds formed a perfect angel.

            Jody Hubbard’s experience reminded me that there is no end to what the hand of God can provide. Regardless of the need, when any problem touches your heart, the eye of God is watching.

THE DISASTER TURNED INTO A …

            Recently I was talking with my friend Penny Randell. As author, Penny dearly loves the continent of Africa and has often traveled there, venturing into the darkest jungle and places where most Americans wouldn’t go.  On one occasion, Penny ventured into the jungle habitat of gorillas. One of the females walked over to her and touched her hand. That stuck me as almost qualifying for a miracle story. Through the years, Penny developed an interest in angels and came to talk about what my encounters with inspired persons had taught me.

            I shared with her a statement from Normandi Ellis’s book The Ancient Tradition of Angels (Bear and Company publishers). This highly informative work details the history of what has been written about angels through the centuries. At one point he writes, “Angels can take whatever form they wish. When the occasion warrants, they may appear as humans.” The quote sparked Penny’s memory and she told me about one of her many experiences in Africa.

            While driving through the back country on dirt roads in Kenya, Penny hit a deep hole. The severe jolt stopped the car. When Penny got out, she discovered the motor had broken loose and was now sitting in that depression. The motor had dropped out of the car!

            I am not a mechanic, but I can envision how unusual a detachment of the engine from the transmission must be! Fixing it on a remote road sounded impossible. Certainly would put the car out of business!

            As Penny sat there desperate on this remote jungle road, she knew travelers seldom came down this stretch. She felt doomed, but being a spiritual person, she began to pray. Suddenly in the rearview mirror, Penny saw a truck load of natives roaring down the road behind her.  Abductions and murders were known to happen in this part of Kenya. Her consternation turned into fear.

            The truck stopped and six black men got out. The leader knocked on her car window. “Need help?” She nodded. He looked under the car and motioned for the other men to join him. They immediately went to work creating a lift with a rope and a crane. The motor lifted up out of the hole and back into the vehicle. The six men started doing something under the hood. Penny couldn’t grasp how anyone could reattach the engine back into the car and make it run out there on that remote road.  However, in an astonishingly short amount of time these men had the motor reattached and the car running.

            Penny explained she would have to get money to pay them in the next town. They declined and said they would follow her to make sure everything was running okay. The car worked fine and Penny started down the road. When she looked back to thank them, the six men and their truck weren’t there. They had simply vanished.

            What happened? Penny Randall is convinced they were angels sent in her hour of desperate need. She now knows angels can take any shape they wish.

            The Apostle told us to be kind to strangers for “some have unwittingly entertained angels.” (Hebrews 13: 2) Here’s a new dimension to your quest to understand the miraculous. Angels may be standing around you right now.

            Remember. Miracles never cease.
