HIS HEART STOPPED AND…

            Several years ago, I described Ron Carte’s extraordinary encounter with eternity. A week or so I talked with Ron and felt you’d want to hear his story again. Ron lives not far from me in Edmond, Oklahoma where he once oversaw several banks. He had switched to involvement in a construction company and was on his way to the office when his heart stopped and the extraordinary journey began.

            The heart stoppage caused him to veer off the street and crash into a tree. Ron passed out, but when he became conscious, he could smell gasoline. The emergency crew had arrived on the scene and began pulling him through the smashed car window. Ron was rushed to the Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City.

            Immediately taken into the operating room, the doctor began the procedure to implant a pace maker. Unfortunately, the physician placed the small wire in the wrong vein, resulting in a massive stroke.

            The medical machine monitoring his heart beat dropped to a zero.  Ron was dead.

            But where was he?

            Ron was walking through a garden that he surmised must be in heaven. Walking down a cobblestone path, he saw a figure standing by the gate at the end of the garden. The man had shoulder length hair and was wearing a robe.  Ron called to him. “Hey, Buddy, where am I?”

            The man said, “Ronnie, don’t worry. I am here.”

            No one had called him Ronnie except his mother.

            “Take my hand,” the man said.

            Instantly all pain vanished. Ron’s heart trouble ceased. Extraordinary peace flooded over him.

            “Can I stay here?” Ron asked. Never had he experienced such tranquility.

            “It’s not your time,” Jesus said.  “You’ve got to go back and tell everyone what you’ve seen. Gather your children and grandchildren around. Don’t worry about the details. I will send my knowledge to you through the Bible.”

            And Ron was back in a hospital bed.  Alive.

            Ron knew his destiny was to share this experience and has done so ever since. For example, he discovered an old friend in Florida was dying of cancer. He called, shared his story, and assured the man that his profession of the Christ would take him to heaven. The friend thanked him profusely. The next day he died.

            Ron continues telling the story to anyone who listens. Heaven is wonderful and a Savior is waiting there. By the way, that includes you.

WHERE GRACE APPEARED

Most of these miracle blogs have been intended to help people discover divine breakthroughs, but along the way I’ve found that many, many people already believe in the promise. Even in a time of skepticism, 73% of Americans believe in heaven. A higher percent believe in a divine being. The problem for many is accessing the promises that comes with faith. Perhaps, we need to explore “how” we receive the miraculous more than only exploring the “fact” of their existence. Here’s an example of “how.”

Rev. Beth Owen worked in the Church of the Holy Spirit, ministering primarily to women. One young woman had struggled for a long time trying to conceive a baby. She and her husband had been concerned for a period of years and had almost come to the conclusion that conception was not possible. The young women arrived in Beth’s office in a state of desperation. She wanted prayer.

Beth was keenly aware of the admonition in James 5:14 for the leaders of the church to pray over the needy and anoint them with oil. The scriptural promise was that the prayer of the faithful would bring recovery to the sick person. Beth’s custom was to take this passage literally and do what it said.

After anointing the young woman with oil, Beth began praying for her in accord with the scripture. As she prayed, Beth felt a strong sensation come over her. She was certain the young women would conceive.

Nine months later, a baby was born.

What was the “how” in this divine intervention? First, the young woman’s desperation brought her to the church as the place where grace was poured out. She positioned herself to receive in faith. Second, Beth ministered to her according to the scripture, following a specific direction from the Bible. Third, Beth experienced an inner assurance that the matter was covered by God’s provision. The “how” was conveyed through the church.

Beth was always careful in sharing this story not to give other couples a false sense of security, but she continued to minister with results.

So, how do you relate to this “how?” You might want to take the ministry of the church more seriously than you have in the past. Finding an inspired clergyperson can be the key. Just remember. Miracles never cease.

SHE KNEW SHE WAS DEAD BUT…

            While my wife Margueritte and I were having supper with the Correas, Linda began telling me about an experience her mother had when she was born. I was amazed as her story unfolded.

Her mother’s name in Minsk, Russia was Jadwiga Allskiewicz, but when she immigrated to America and married, her name became Edith Gustafson. She had come from what was then White Russia in the Russian-Polish area where she spoke only Russian. Soon she had a much better life in America and eventually had three children. The fourth one was born on May 28, 1958 and that’s where the problem started.

            A decade or so later her last child Linda began having problems sleeping and shared this with her mother. “Why are you afraid of sleeping?” Edith asked.

            “I am afraid I will die when I am sleeping,” thirteen-year old Linda said.

            “No, no,” her mother insisted. “Dying and sleeping are very different. You won’t die in your sleep.”

            “How do you know?” Linda insisted.

            Edith looked away. For several moments she said nothing. Finally, she said, “I never told anyone this fact because I didn’t want them to think I had gone crazy.” She stopped and then said, “But I died when you were born.”

            “What?” Linda gasped.

            “Yes, it is true. I had a very difficult time delivering you. At the time I was 35-years-old and in those days that was considered old to have a baby. I started to hemorrhage and the doctor couldn’t stop the bleeding. I slipped into unconsciousness. I felt myself being pushed out of my body.  Later they told me I was dead for 20 minutes.”

            Linda knew her mother was a spiritual person, but she didn’t talk about personal matters very often. When she told Linda what had happened when she died, Linda knew no one else had ever heard this story.

            “What… what happened … when you died?” Linda asked.

            “I closed my eyes and when I opened them again, I was in this most beautiful place I ever saw. Bright! Green! Spring like! Everything was peaceful, more wonderful than I can describe. Then I saw this glorious bright light. A kaleidoscope of light green colors that began turning into a bright, white light. All communication was telepathic and non-verbal. I wanted to stay there forever, but the voice that came out of the bright light told me I was to go back. I had things I must do. A daughter to raise. It just wasn’t my time and then I felt a gravitational pull downward.  I came back into my body. They tell me that when you don’t breathe for 20 minutes you are permanently dead. I know, I know, but here I am. Very much alive.”

            Linda didn’t know what to say.

            “Listen to your Mama,” Edith said. “That’s why I know sleeping is nothing like dying. I’ve been there.”

            And that was the end of Linda’s sleeping problems.

            I sat there fascinated with Linda’s important story.  Her mother had touched the world we call eternity. What a promise for all of us. Just remember miracles never cease!

THE MOTORCYCLE EXPLODED AND …

This past week I was holding a Night of Empowerment event where hurting people discover the power of the Holy Spirit to set them free from their struggles. The service at The Church had been exceptionally powerful. I was hurrying away to make another appointment when Johnny Brooks stopped me in the hall.

“Got something you might want to hear,” Johnny said. “I nearly died.”

I immediately stopped and wanted to hear his story. Johnny was part of a motorcycle ministry of The Church (formerly Act Church) called The Priesthood. Along with other groups they drove the highways and enjoyed the relationships. Johnny Brooks was cruising through Claremore, Oklahoma close to the Hard Rock Casiono when a truck with a trailer swung onto the highway and didn’t see him. Johnny clipped the rear of the trailer and went flying. Laying on the ground, Johnny knew he was dying and could barely mutter, “Tell my wife Nicole that I love her.”

The wreck ruptured his aorta that runs into the heart. As the doctors at Tulsa’s St. Francis hospital frantically worked on him, Johnny lost 45 pints of blood. They told his wife no one has ever survived such a loss.

And where was Johnny?

He was laying in a large field. A man in a robe with shoulder-length hair was standing behind and above him. He couldn’t see the man’s face but wanted to do so. He could feel the man’s touch on his shoulder and wondered if he was Jesus. (Later he believed the figure was Jesus) Johnny remembered thousands of people standing around the field watching what was happening.  Suddenly, Johnny’s wife was there crying and saying, “Don’t give up!”

That night Johnny’s step-daughter Destiny Reed had a dream. The next morning, she told her mother. “I dreamed Daddy was in a field and there was a glowing light surrounding him.”

And those thousands of people watching the field? Later Johnny learned that friends in motorcycle clubs all over America were praying for him. One of the clubs felt a divine intervention was at work as they prayed.

Five times the physicians told the family that Johnny Brooks wouldn’t make it. He did.

Finally, one of the doctors told his wife that it was a miracle that he had survived. Her response? She said, “Johnny was touched by Jesus. That’s all there was to it.”

Do miracles continue to happen today? Ask Johnny Brooks. He’ll tell you they most certainly do.

A MIRACLE IN A GUN FIGHT

Does God still intervene in history and produce miracles? The headlines say no. The Bible says yes. I’ll stick with the Bible. You might respond, “Yeah, give me an example.” Here’s one.

Recently I have been studying the history of how the nation of Israel began in 1948 and how the Jewish people were sustained during the attack by the surrounding Arab nations immediately after independence was declared. Three thousand years earlier the scripture proclaimed that the Jew would return to Jerusalem. Would they survive?

In the late ‘40’s, the survivors of Hitler’s death camps had been escaping to Israel, hoping the United Nations would declare a Jewish state in Palestine. Once United Nations Resolution 181 passed, David Ben-Gurion declared the establishment of the nation of Israel. The Arab armies immediately attacked.

During the warfare, five Jewish defenders were perched on the edge of Old City walls as a multitude of Jordanian soldiers advanced toward them. The five men began firing and stopping some of the attackers, but the multitude kept coming. The Jews realized that they had only a few bullets left and would be quickly wiped out.

The defenders turned to each other and began praying. They called on YHWH, the God of Sinai, and prepared to die.

Suddenly the Arabs stopped. They began to cover their eyes. Someone cried out a blood-curdling scream. The Arabian soldiers turned and began running back down the hill. The five Jewish defenders stared almost in disbelief. What happened?

Several years later one of the five men met one of the Arab soldiers. He couldn’t miss the opportunity to ask him why they ran.

“Didn’t you see him?” the Arab said. “That gigantic figure standing behind you. He was huge! Scared us to death. We ran!”

The figure? An angel protecting God’s chosen people?

The point. God protects His own and that includes a much wider circle than only the Jews. His promises and purposes never change and last forever. You can be part of that special group.

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE OTHER SIDE? 

This past Friday I attended an extraordinary dedication of the shrine to the first martyr of the American Roman Catholic Church. I had just finished writing a book on the life of Father Stanley Rother who was martyred defending the Christian faith in Guatemala. For Father Rother to be officially recognized as a Saint, there must be a miracle resulting from the martyr’s intervention. Since I had been writing about similar “near-death” type happenings and was writing about Fr. Rother, although a Protestant, I wondered about what had happened after this important person had crossed the threshold of eternity.

Just as I was finishing writing the book The Making of a Martyr, I got a phone call from the person editing my manuscript. She told me about a story that appeared on a Tulsa television station and  in The Daily Oklahoman July 27, 2022. Here’s a reproduction of part of that publication.

Johnny Workman believes he’s here today because he got help from beyond. “I felt something kind of hit me in the back and when I turned, I got trapped,” he explains. Trapped by a run-away 30,000-pound asphalt roller. The weight of two elephants pinned him against the roller, crushing him. 

“I saw myself in the mirror, I saw myself changing colors and then I blacked out,” he says. 

Workman suffered 27 fractures to his chest alone. While in a medically induced coma, his family placed a medal of Blessed Stanley Rother on Workman’s chest and prayed for the intersession of the Priest who grew up in Okarche, Oklahoma. 

“I believe that’s when it happened—the miracle,’ says Workman. Workman remains unwavering in the vision he experienced while unconscious. “He [Fr. Stanley Rother] picked me up and we were walking together- Mother Mary on one side and he was on the other. Stanley Rother grabbed me by the hand, and we were walking. [I] don’t know if we were going to heaven.”

Suddenly, Johnny Workman woke up in a hospital. The doctors were flabbergasted.  

Workman describes his unexpected recovery has nothing short of miraculous. “Doctors nurses and staff would tell me almost every day I was lucky to be alive.” 

A letter of his account has been delivered to the Oklahoma City Archdiocese describing his now healed body as the result of more than good luck. 

“Maybe it’s a miracle in the churches- but I know with 100% fact that it was a miracle in my eyes,” says Workman. 

Most Protestants generally wouldn’t know what to say about this kind of story. Roman Catholics and the Orthodox Churches would have no problem accepting it. Wherever you are, it’s an event that challenges your thoughts. Don’t forget that many churches say the Apostles Creed every Sunday affirming “we believe in the communion of the saints.”

A FRIEND IN NEED

I am always amazed by the stories that describe the unexpected appearances of the Unexpected. Over the past few years, I shared some of these accounts that happen in all kinds of places including winter blizzards. Right now we are preparing for a “whopper” starting this week and dumping ice on the roads. That makes this a good time to remember what is possible when the cold winds blow in.

Jacinta Williams of Stuart, Florida has just such a story.

When an unexpected seizure hit her, Jacinta was terrified. With no history of epilepsy or any similar disorder, she was diagnosed with having a reaction to a prescription. While working on her job as a hair stylist, another attack knocked her on the floor still holding a bottle of hair color in her hand. Blackness swallowed her. Slowly she began to return to consciousness.

Jacinta could hear muffled voices around her. While she was struggling to regain full awareness, she could hear more voices above her. Slowly, she began to realize that someone was holding her hand. When Jacinta opened her eyes, she saw a beautiful, smiling woman with long blonde hair and sparkling eyes. Jacinta guessed the woman must be around thirty-years-old.

As the woman looked into Jacinta’s eyes, she didn’t say a word. And yet — Jacinta clearly heard her say, “Do not be afraid. Soon you will be well.”

An ambulance arrived and the paramedics started preparing her for the ride to the hospital. She looked at them and her co-workers. “Where’s the beautiful lady who held my hand.” They shook their heads, not sure of what she was talking about. No one seemed to remember such a woman being there.

Once she was in the hospital and examined, the doctors assured her that the medication hadn’t left her system yet, but just as she had heard, Jacinta was okay. Now fully recovered, she realized what had happened in her shop. The voice was lovely beyond words and the assurance had come like a warm blanket in a cold winter. The beautiful woman was no woman at all. Jacinta had met her guardian angel.

Years later, she has never had another seizure and remains a complete believer in angels. Jacinta will tell you that angels are there all the time. Pay attention!

ENCOUNTERING AN ANGEL

For centuries there has been an unfortunate disdain among Christians for Jews. The conclusion was that Jewish people don’t experience the miraculous as Christians do. Would God hear their prayers? Oh, surely not! Sorry, not only is that attitude wrong, it has inflicted considerable pain on Jewish people. Church people tend to forget that Abraham was a Jew. Moses was Jew. And most of all, Jesus was a Jew.

Let me introduce you to a close personal friend whose father was imprisoned in Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. Karen Z. Brass and her husband attend a synagogue and have raised their children Adam and Shannah  as Jews. Karen knows all about experiencing angels.

Around seven years of age, Karen began dreaming about escaping her then dysfunctional family and an extremely difficult and abusive mother. As she thought about her reoccurring dream of escaping this setting, Karen began to sense she was being saved by angels. This hunch expanded with the emergence of a “circle of light” that appeared at night giving her the assurance and security to go to sleep. The lights were the form that the angels expressed. Angels regularly quieted her fears.

When Karen became an adult woman, she became aware of spontaneous ideas that popped into her head when she needed guidance. For example, she would hear a thought like “take the umbrella.” If she didn’t pay attention, it would rain and she’d get drenched. “Don’t wear those shoes” might come through. If she went ahead and wore them, Karen was certain to trip and fall. Often an angelic message reminds her to reach out to a person in need and let them know someone is thinking of them. In time, Karen realized that she had a guardian angel who protected her. When the angels spoke, inspiration began in a whisper. If the angel repeated the message, the whisper got louder. Karen now often holds out her hands to let the angel know she is paying attention.

Karen met her husband David through an angelic intrusion. At a synagogue service, as she started to park her car, the angelic voice insisted she drive to a different place than she originaly intended. Karen argued that she saw a better spot but the angel was insistent. She gave in and parked as guided. During the service, she met David for the first time and was immediately attracted. Continuing their conversation, David walked Karen out to her car. To her surprise, she had parked next to him! Today, Karen never ceases to listen for angelic guidance.

My conclusion? Everyone has a guardian angel who can make all the difference in our lives. Those random thoughts that blip through your mind may not be as random as they would seem. An angel may be trying to help. Pay attention.
