MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

Robert Wise explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view.

SUMMER RERUNS

The corona-virus pandemic has made it impossible for me to make the contacts to continue reporting extraordinary happenings to ordinary people. However, I’ve got a mail bag of these great stories so I’m recycling some that you probably never read. Here’s an example.

George Vey was an interesting guy. For years, he had been a Dutch dairyman in Orange County, California and a staunch Calvinist (very) conservative Christian. Before Los Angeles spread all over Southern California, there were many such dairy farms around San Dimas, Irvine, and the rolling countryside that was always warm and pleasant in the winter. George was contentedly running his farm when a real estate developer came along with a deal to build a mall on George’s pasture. Overnight George became a multi-millionaire.

One evening I was talking to him about faith and the subject of St. Francis of Assisi came up. George abruptly told me that he had a devotion to St. Francis. I was surprised because that idea couldn’t have been more contrary and foreign to his Protestant Evangelical faith. George told me this story.

Struggling with painful ulcers, his wife pressed him to go with her on a trip to Rome. George didn’t want to see the Eternal City, but agreed to go if she’d go with him to Assisi. He didn’t know a great deal about St. Francis, but profoundly admired him, his work, and his spirit. In order to get George on an airplane, his wife agreed.

Well before the last earthquake shook the Basilica, St. Francis’ grave was beneath a pile of rocks under the church where the famous frescos of Giotto hung. With his ulcers stinging, George walked down the stairs and sat down only feet away from the grave of St. Francis. He had no idea what he might see, but wanted to express his admiration. As George looked at the sight, abruptly before him a figure appeared in a brown robe with a robe cinch around his middle and wearing sandals. George instantly knew he was looking at the 12th century Francis of Assisi. Francis smiled and communicated telepathically that he was moved that George had taken the time to come to his grave to express respect and appreciation. Francis conveyed a blessing to George.

George stared in astonishment, almost not believing what his eyes saw. And then the figure was gone. George sat transfixed. After a long period of contemplation, he went back upstairs to join his wife.

Three days later they were back in Rome. For the first time, he explained his experience to his wife. She asked why he had waited days to tell her. “Because I wanted to make sure what happened was real. I know it is because my ulcers are gone.”

The condition never returned.

To the time of his death, George’s experience remained a miracle for him. Uniquely and for His own reasons, our heavenly Father can interject something wonderful into our lives. Could it happen to you? Sure.

Divine intrusions happen all the time.

SUMMER RERUNS

The corona-virus pandemic has made it impossible for me to make the contacts to continue reporting extraordinary happenings to ordinary people. However, I’ve got a mail bag of these great stories so I’m recycling some that you probably never read. Here’s an example.

Patty Sills’s condition was diagnosed as Tardive Dystoma which meant her neck muscles continually contracted and pulled her head to one side. Patty had no control over her neck and was in constant pain. The condition made her spine bulge. She could be medicated but not cured. Doctors told Patty she would have this condition the rest of her life.

Patty told me that she didn’t want to live anymore. She couldn’t work or pursue any hobbies because she was so uncomfortable. Patty was certain she would be better off dead. Her voice sounded desperate as she described her deteriorating emotional condition.

Having grown up in the Roman Catholic Church, Patty had lots of problems with church procedures. Organized religion only imparted other issues. Consequently, she was particularly skeptical about TV healers and churches in general.

Leslie, a young woman who had a reputation for talking with angels and praying for hurting people, was introduced to Patty. The whole idea seemed absurd, but Patty was desperate.

Leslie asked Patty to lay flat on a table and she began to pray. Leslie’s hands became so hot that heat radiated through Patty’s body. When Leslie moved to her neck, Patty went into a convulsion and felt outside herself. She had to have help to stand.

The next day everything changed. Her incurable condition completely disappeared. If you ask her if she believes in miracles, she will tell you that she is living proof they still happen.

Since I began working on this subject, I have been amazed at how many stories I have turned up. They often come from people I know who have been reluctant to talk about their experiences that powerfully reordered their lives. In the contemporary world immersed in scientism and secularization, the idea that Divinity still reaches into everyday life and radically changes physical problems is considered nonsense. In the average mainline church, no one has seen a miracle or expects to encounter one. The subject remains closed.

But so were a number of other practices that are now totally accepted.

In the late ‘60s when I came out of seminary, people who claimed such cures were considered on the crazy side. Consequently, talk of miracles has been off the table for a long time. In these blogs we will be exploring many stories like Patty’s and will hopefully help you discover how to become a part of this new revolution that the Holy Spirit is bringing to the world. Miracles still happen!

FAITHFULNESS MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

FAITHFULNESS MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Recently I was talking with Rev. Roger Gorman, currently pastoring Heritage Fellowship Church in Edmond, Oklahoma. Previously, the Gorman’s had been missionaries in South Africa. I discovered Rev. Gorman knows the meaning of miracles!

When he was diagnosed with prostrate cancer, his wife Mary Ruth knew the situation was serious. The Gormans immediately began to pray about this condition… but the problem got worse. Roger steadily began to lose weight and eventually lost 38 pounds. The doctors continued to be pessimistic and saw little hope.

Meanwhile, Roger’s body continued to deteriorate. He slipped into a coma and eventually a urologist recommended dialysis. The medical team did everything they knew how to do, but nothing seemed to stop his continual downhill slide. A bone marrow test was done in hopes of reversing the cancer, but that didn’t work. A stomach tube was surgically put into his stomach because he couldn’t eat. Examination discovered lesions in his esophagus as well as many ulcers in his stomach. Roger Gorman couldn’t have been in worse shape.

As these procedures were attempted, Mary Ruth kept praying. She had done so from the first moment that the diagnosis of prostrate cancer was given. Both Gormans continued to pray and call out for God’s help. When visitors came by, she called on them to join in prayer for Roger’s recovery. Mary Ruth was persistent.

Roger slipped into a coma and remained in that state for 13 days. During this time, the doctors became even more pessimistic and eventually one doctor told Mary Ruth that she needed to prepare herself for his death. While she understood, Mary Ruth refused to accept his diagnosis. Rather, people all over the world were alerted to Roger’s condition and asked to pray. People across Africa as well as America prayed. One church in Alabama dedicated an entire evening with the members doing nothing but intercede for Roger. Hundreds of prayers went up for his survival.

A medical missionary doctor was praying and envisioned death leaving Roger’s body. At that time, he was still in a coma but woke up. When Dr. Richard Honaker was praying, he believed that he heard the Lord say “as Jesus called Lazarus out of the grave, you can call Roger back from death.”

Finally, a friendly doctor came in and said, “Roger, your cancer has gone into remission. You will live.”

A multitude had called out for divine help. God had answered. Roger says, ““It is alright to ask God hard questions; it is alright to depend on the prayers of others when you cannot pray for yourself; and you are never alone.”

Who knows how many prayed? What we do know is that Roger is alive today.

NANCY STAFFOR: CHRISTIAN IN HOLLYWOOD

NANCY STAFFOR: CHRISTIAN IN HOLLYWOOD

MATLOCK, the television series with Andy Griffith, has made a new comeback on the Me-TV series. The “good old days” series like Gunsmoke, Carol Burnett, Gomer Pyle, etc. are so much better than most of the contemporary mindless sit-coms that people are tuning them in again.

One of the regulars on MATLOCK was Nancy Stafford who played Andy’s secretary Michelle Thomas. Through the years, Nancy Stafford performed on a host of other shows such as Seasons of Miracles, Quantum Leap, The Mentalists, and a host more. Nancy had the highest praise for Andy Griffith as an actor who cared deeply about what he did. He could memorize the courtroom scenes so well, that at the end of a shooting, everyone clapped. Griffith made sure every aspect of a set was perfect. Nancy adored working with him.

Nancy grew up in a Christian home and was taught that it was important to have a relationship with God. She grew up knowing about divine interventions. However, once she plunged into the acting world, she took a different path for 15 years. Today, she remembers that her personal choices left her a broken person. Going from boyfriend to boyfriend, her career boomed, but her life didn’t. During this time, she studied Buddhism, Rosicrucianism, as well as Hinduism. She had become a religious seeker without answers that worked.

At that point, Nancy discovered she had developed a cancer on her face. Her ‘perfect life” could disappear in an instant. Nancy was in turmoil. She was working on an episode of “Magnum P.I.” in Hawaii and shooting on the beach. Nancy brought her Bible with her and was reading it. As she studied the promises in the Bible, a change began forming. At that moment, she began experiencing an incredible encounter with the Living God. Nancy knew she must depend on Jesus Christ in all of her choices. She realized that the hand of God had enabled her to be a successful actress and would lead her through recovery from the cancer. A divine intervention changed her entire life.

Today, Nancy is an inspirational speaker and works with Christian groups as well as continuing her acting career. She prays about the roles that she accepts. Nancy works to help the public understand God loves them, cares for them, and provides them with hope.

Are divine interventions still possible? Nancy Stafford believes the pages of the scripture can lead anyone to a vital and dynamic relationship with their heavenly Father.

ANGELS ARE FOR REAL

Francis and Judith MacNutt have been friends of mine for decades. Recently, Francis passed to heaven. Judith continues their ministry. One of her books that I would highly recommend is Angels are For Real (Chosen Books) where she relates this experience.

Susan worked in O’Hare Airport where Judith met her. For some times she had been suffering with an undiagnosed severe abdominal cramping. Eventually, she had to be rushed to the ER where she was hospitalized. After testing, the results indicated her condition was serious.

Around midnight as the pain worsened, Susan cried out to God for relief. Her stomach had become distended. Even with the additional medication the doctor prescribed, nothing halted the pain. Again, she cried out for divine intervention.

In an adjacent room, a patient with terminal cancer heard the cry and came in. Wearing the usual hospital gown, the terribly thin and frail woman offered to pray for her. Susan begged her to because her pain had become so intense that she was even ready to die. Susan instantly begged for the woman to intercede for her.

“Do you mind if I anoint you with oil?” the woman asked.

Susan again agreed. The woman anointed her forehead and began praying. As she prayed, Susan’s stomach returned to normal size and the pain slowly decreased. Susan was so overjoyed she kept thanking the woman and finally fell into a deep, peaceful sleep.

When the doctor returned in the morning, he was surprised that Susan was sitting up in bed. Later he told her that he had not expected her to live through the night. To his even greater surprise, when he examined her, he could find absolutely nothing wrong with her.

Susan proceeded to tell him what had happened, only making him look more confused. He asked for a more detailed description of the lady who prayed. Susan went into great detail while watching his face become more confounded.

Finally, the doctor said, “That’s impossible! The woman you described died at 8:00 last night.”

82 DAYS ON OKINAWA

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

Robert Wise explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. Can 21st century people believe the hand of God still touches people today?

A SURPRISE FOR YOU

Please excuse me for diverting from my usual subject matter, but I have a new book I believe you’ll find helpful. I can place this work under the heading of inspirational because I will give you a new patriotic sense of the meaning of America. In a time of political chaos, this is a story of hope.

82 DAYS ON OKINAWA has been proclaimed as an unforgettable firsthand account of the Pacific’s war’s greatest Battle. The book has been released by Harper-Collins under the name of Col Art Shaw and Robert L. Wise.

I met 96-year-old Col. Art Shaw in my wife’s congregation. Hardly looking his age, the Colonel is now 100-years-old. He confided that for the scope of his long life, he had never talked about the war. I kept asking questions and the story flooded out. Throughout the following winter, we worked together as I probed his memory. In the beginning Col. Shaw was reluctant, but the story returned him to the battlefield and he gave me details few people ever heard.

On Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945, the Allied Army fleet descended on the Japanese island and began the most vicious struggle of World War II. The Army expected an 80% casualty rate. Then a Major, Art Shaw was the first American soldier to step ashore. Becoming legendary for its brutality, the struggle was a fight to the death for the Japanese. The U.S. Army’s 361st Artillery Battalion killed 37,763 of the enemy.

The confrontation was the last major battle of World War II as the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki brought the war to an unconditional surrender on the part of Japan. Art shared with me the details of what he saw and experienced. I have tried to write both the spirit and the facts of this horrendous struggle.

You can find 82 DAYS ON OKINAWA at your local book store or on Amazon. I believe reading this story will give you a new confidence in America and the values that have made this country the land of the free. You will recover new conviction about our country’s great democracy. I hope the story give you renewed encouragement.

EASTER CAME EARLY

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

Robert L. Wise explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. Can 21st century people believe the hand of God still touches people today?

EASTER CAME EARLY

Stovall and Kerri Weems started a congregation with seventeen people in l998. Today, they have over 12,000 members. In 2018, the Weems were holding a Good Friday service when a break through occurred. This year they decided that rather than a regular sermon, they would have a “shared experience” of the resurrection. What brought the change? How did it all happen?

Stovall had heard people say they literally experienced the risen Christ, but he doubted those stories. Of course, he was a dedicated Christian, but he wasn’t sure about those contemporary reports. Then they held a special Jewish traditional Seder Passover service where the pastor could and did pray in Hebrew.  As the pastor was consecrating the bread and wine, speaking Hebrew he said, “Take and eat. This is my body broken for you.”

However, as he was speaking in Hebrew, another voice broke in.  An audible voice said three times in Hebrew, “Take and eat. This is my body broken for you.”

The pastor knew he was in the presence of God and was hearing the actual voice of Jesus speaking. He could only stand there in silent shock. The staff sitting close thought something had happened to the pastor standing there voiceless like he was in shell shock. What was going on?

In those moments, the pastor was in a trance and having a heavenly vision of the Passover with Jesus and his disciples seated around a table. He could see and hear them. Here was Jesus of Nazareth just as he had been during his earthly ministry. The pastor could hear his voice with the same passionate authority and strength that it must have always carried when Jesus taught and preached..

When the pastor spoke of a “shared experience” service his perspective had obviously changed. He was speaking out of his most personal encounter. The story of Easter was not a memory from the past or an account in the pages of scripture. The resurrection was a story he had physically touched.

And the meaning? Certainly, there’s no magic in Hebrew words, but something about Holy Communion can reach across 2,000 years and connect with a heavenly reality. Each of us can have our own encounters even though they are personal and different. Even with these diverse paths, we are challenged to reach out so we can say with conviction, “I too have seen the Lord.”
The promise makes Easter possible every month of the year.
