MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

Rev. Robert L. Wise, PhD explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., he is the author of 36 books. Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

AND LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENED WHEN…

While the meaning of Easter still lingers in our thoughts, I am reminded of how the Resurrection of Jesus the Christ continues to guide our personal battles with death and illness.  A blow was struck against sickness and deterioration. Sure, the battle with human infirmity is not over, but the miraculous interventions of our heavenly Father continue to guide us in our time of need.  Here are two examples that I recently found in my files. When people have received a touch of Grace, they often write me. Here are two expressions of divine intervention. (Names are anonymous for privacy sake)

Paula’s trip to the doctor about her abdominal pain resulted in Gall Bladder surgery. After the surgery, the pain continued. Paula heard about the “Jesus Prayer.”  Taken from the Gospels, (Matthew 20:31), the prayer of two blind men brought the restoration of their sight. “Lord Jesus, Son of  David have mercy on us,” or “Lord Jesus, Son of God have mercy on me,” is repeated over and over in a prayerful mantra seeking healing.

The discovery of the earliest Church was that repetition helped the mind, the emotions, and the physical body come together and focus on coming into a relationship with the Holy Spirit. We are lifted out of the distractions of this world and brought into the realm of inspiration. The Jesus prayer is often prayed  over and over for a long time.

Paula discovered the prayer helped her breathe more deeply and speeded up the healing process. However, during the hospital stay an x-ray showed an abnormality with Paula’s heart. She kept praying the Jesus Prayer. The next x-ray revealed the abnormality was gone. Paula was released early. Like the two blind men, she knew the hand of God had reached into her body and made whole.

Struggling with throbbing agony, George had been rushed to the emergency room at St. Anthony’s hospital, Oklahoma City. Sever stomach pains had doubled him up. The cramping turned into a real struggle. A friend showed up and began praying for the condition. Within five minutes, the nightmare was over. The excruciating discomfort disappeared. Surprisingly enough, George discovered that his habit of smoking cigarettes was also gone and he hasn’t smoked since. All because of a friend’s prayer.

We might conclude that Easter happened again in a hospital.  Is the Holy Spirit still working in our world?  You bet your boots. Just remember miracles never cease!

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Recently a friend said,  “You know. you’ve had a tough life. You’ve been in the same ditch where most people live. Robert, you were adopted as a child. Then, you went through an unwanted divorce that recked the church you served. Your oldest son was killed in a car wreck. How did you make it through such an ordeal?”

“Divine interventions,” I answered. “That’s how I got interested in exploring how miracles happen.” My friend wanted to know more so I shared my first miraculous experience.

Years ago, I developed a fever that gradually worsened and finally ended in a diagnosis of acute nephritis, a most serious kidney disease. Nothing slowed the progress of the illness. I ended up sleeping around 20 hours a day, struggling to read, and my kidneys were shrinking. I was looking a dialysis at best; death at worst. Nothing helped.

Finally, I was sent to a Roman Catholic hospital for extensive tests and x-rays. The dye shot through my veins, and felt like fire was engulfing my body. Attempting to find relief, I noticed a crucifix on the wall and wondered if I could mentally project or transfer my suffering to that object. To my surprise, the figure of a crucified Christ seemed to absorb some of my pain. I was surprised.

The hospital tests only confirmed the worst. A few days later, a medical book was placed  on the night stand. The article basically said I wasn’t going to get well. I was far too young to die, but there was nothing I could do to stop the inevitable. At that moment, I remembered the crucifix in the hospital. Stretching out in the bed in a cruciform position, I cried out for God’s help. I needed a divine intervention. I have no idea how to explain what followed.

With my eyes closed, I seemed to float upward through the darkness until I was on the Cross with Jesus. Then, I was  mystically “in Christ, “ experiencing his struggle on the Cross – and then he was in me. We seemed to be suspended together on the Cross.

A passage of scripture described the experience best. “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who love me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)

Light began to fill the room so brightly that I didn’t want to open my eyes. As the warmth swept over my body, the light began to penetrate my skin. The light kept g traveling through my entire body. I laid there lost in an ecstasy of warmth. Eventually, I drifted off into a night of wonderful sleep.

To my surprise, I awoke around 10:00 the next morning. Usually, I slept until the afternoon. I picked up a book and could read it. I even felt slightly hungry. Abruptly, the phone rang. The doctor’s office was calling for a urine sample. They apologized for waking me, but said a courier was on the way over to pick it. Forty-five minutes later, the nurse called back. Something hadn’t gone right and they wanted to repeat the process. Fine. I went back to reading. An hour had passed when the phone rang a third time. It was my doctor.

“Look, Robert,” he began, “we both know you’ve not been a good patient. I told you to go to bed long before you did and look where it took you. Are you joking around with us?”

“What are you talking about?” I said.

“What have you been sending over here? Tea?”

“I don’t understand.”

“Look, these tests are normal. It can’t be!”

But it was. I just got well. The fact that my spiritual experience had in 12 hours restored my body seemed unimaginable. Nevertheless, I not only got well, but I still have my kidneys. That’s also medically impossible because once kidneys start to shrink, the process is irreversible. I still have mine. I had cried out for help in the night and got a miracle in the morning.

That’s how my search to understand miracles began and these weekly blogs eventually followed. The search has proved to be one of the most important journeys of my life. By the way, he same discovery is possible for you.

A LIGHT FROM BEYOND

When Jana Branson was four-years-old, she had an usual playmate. Actually, she thought he was her brother. They would sit and talk. If she became afraid, he would always comfort her. Even at night as she was going asleep, he would sit on the bed as she dosed off. At one point, he told her someday Jana would become an Episcopal Church priest. Oh, yes, his name was Jesus.

As Jana grew up, her friend faded away and she realized he was not as real as some of her other acquaintances. Nevertheless, Jana knew he had been a reality in her life and took him seriously. When she told her parents about wanting to be a priest, they informed her that such didn’t happen in the Episcopal Church. One had to be a man. Of course, Jana was angry. However, with the passing years, that rule changed and today woman are clergy.

Much later in life with grown children, Jana went to seminary and became an Episcopal priest. Her childhood relationship with Jesus continued to guide her life. While the revelations might have faded for a time, the special dimension remained in the back of her mind. Today, it is difficult for her to put these discoveries into words, the numinous is in many ways beyond words. Nevertheless, spiritual openness has guided her life.

More than interesting, you may find Jana’s experience to be helpful to you. Perhaps, you’ve had something similar and doubted the reality. Jana’s continuing spiritual encounters can help you find reassurance. I’ve found that experiences with God break in unexpectedly for many people. Here’s more of Jana’s story.

When Jana begins to reach beyond her daily experience, a bright white light often appeared. While she could only see an outline of a figure in the bright while light, she intuitively knew that once again she was communicating with Jesus of Nazareth. She was touching an adult expression of her childhood experience. The bright light guided her away from some detour situations. These flashing moments were revelatory and got her back on the right track again.

When Jana prayerfully meditates on her life’s decisions, the light often breaks in and brings insight. Today, one of the most important moments comes as she is officiating during Holy Communion. The Sanctus prayer proclaiming “Holy, Holy, Lord God of power and might …” can become a moment of encounter. During the prayers of consecration when the celebrant prays, “With Angels and Archangels and all the company of heaven who forever sing the hymn…” is such a special moment. Often the white light breaks in and Jana will see parents, friends, people who have passed on standing around her as she prays. In these moments of Holy Communion, heaven opens its doors to Jana.

Seeing the unseen? That’s been Jana’s life experience. She doesn’t talk about it often, but it has defined her sense of reality.  Jana’s special ability gives us encouragement in our own journey forward. We may not see what she does, but we can have the same assurance of what is there.

That’s what divine interventions are all about.

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

LOURDES

I am fascinated by the remarkable events that continue to arise out of the life of Bernadette Subirous of Lourdes. In 1858, she and two companions were gathering sticks when Bernadette disappeared. Found in a small cave, Bernadette seemed to be lost in a spiritual experience. Crowds followed her to the ghetto where she prayed. In one of her sessions, she was told to dig in the soil and a spring sent a new stream of water down the hill. From that pool of water, a man had his blind eye cured. A woman with a paralyzed hand regained its use. Five more miracles occurred that Spring.

The grotto of Lourdes still records such miraculous events even to this day. A clergy friend recently shared his experience of wading in the water (which he found to be very cold) In fact. The 70th miracle was recently recorded. The miraculous event involved a French nun, Sister Bernadette Moriau, who went on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in 2008. She had been suffering from spinal complications which had rendered her wheelchair-bound and fully disabled since 1980. She also said she had been taking morphine to control the pain. For the Roman Catholic Church to accept such events as divine they must be spontaneous, complete cures, and permanent.

Sister Moriau’s healing fit that criteria. “I felt a [surge of] well-being throughout my body, a relaxation, warmth…I returned to my room and there, a voice told me to ‘take off your braces,’” recalled the now 79-year-old nun. “Surprise. I could move,” Moriau said, noting that she instantly walked away from her wheelchair, braces, and pain medications.

However, many other cures have followed that don’t fit their tight definition but are just as real.  Nevertheless, each of these stories remains fascinating. For example, The first documented miracle at Lourdes occurred in 1858 when Catherine Latapie felt a sudden urge to travel to Lourdes in search of healing.  Two years prior, she had fallen from a tree and severely injured her right hand.  The accident left two of her fingers entirely paralyzed.  Latapie met Bernadette at the grotto and very simply washed her hand in the small spring that had formed.  Instantaneously, the paralysis of her fingers was gone, and she could move them just as she could before her accident.

Another cure related to restoration of vision is attributed to Blaisette Cazenave, a woman who suffered from chronic conjunctivitis and an infection that left her eyelids scaly and sore.  Her condition was labeled incurable when she, at the age of 51, used the water at Lourdes as a lotion on her eyes.  Immediately, the scales fell from her eyelids, and her vision was completely restored.  Even the pain and inflammation she suffered was entirely gone.

The stories go on and on.  Lourdes appears to be a portal into eternity where the power of grace comes through. Even the skeptics have to admit that the Roman Catholic Church has an impeccable process before an event is accepted as a miracle.

AN ANGEL?

AN ANGEL?

Stories of angelic appearances have always intrigued me. Many authorities believe that we are given a guardian angel at birth. I also have found the stories of unexpected appearances to be fascinating. Catherine Flore of Tom River, New Jersey had such an experience. Her story offers insight.

Catherine’s brother Frank had always been an important part of her life.  Her daughter Lisa had a special place in her heart for Her Uncle Frank. He was always there when help was needed, making the difference. Suddenly, everything fell apart. Frank died far too  early for his age. Catherine and the family were devastated.  She kept praying for a sign, any sort of sign that Frank was still okay and maybe still with them in some way. Catherine’s prayers for Frank’s well-being were constant.

Not long after Frank’s death, Catherine’s grand-daughter Samantha left on a trip with other relatives. Somewhere out on the highway their car was hit head-on. While no one was killed, Samantha was rushed to the hospital. While the driver was able to get out of the car, Samantha was blended between the seats, bleeding and drifting in and out of consciousness.  They didn’t know what to do.

At that moment, a man showed up and urged them not to move her. He insisted that a paramedic was on the way. No one remembered calling for an ambulance, but quickly the sirens signaled one was about there. Immediately, the paramedics began helping little Samantha. Shortly, they had her out of the tangled wreckage and in the back of the ambulance.

The surviving family went back to the man’s car to thank him for being with them and all he had done. But there was no car. No tracks. The man had appeared and then disappeared.  The unknown man had vanished!

At the hospital, Catherine found Samantha battered, but surviving.  Catherine leaned over the child’s bed and ask if she remembered what this man who helped her looked like. Samantha described someone who looked just like Uncle Frank. Catherine gasped. “Always there when help was needed.”

Was that man who suddenly disappeared Frank? A Guardian Angel? Gives you something to think about.

A HUNCH FROM HEAVEN

Did you even have one of those thoughts that seemed to pop into your mind out of nowhere? The more you reflected on the idea the better it seemed to be, but you couldn’t imagine where the notion came from? Just seemed to float in.

As I have talked with people who knew they encountered angels, I noticed that many of them began their connection by discovering a random concept wasn’t just a spontaneous blip.  They came to conclude that their guardian angel gave them the nudge. That’s an interesting idea to consider. Of course, many people think the idea of a guardian angel to be only a figurative expression of speech.

But is it?

Collen LaFarge of Stoughton, Massachusetts will tell you to pay attention. Here’s her experience.

Collen worked in a home-improvement store at night so she could be with her daughters during the day. One evening, she was coming home late at night and recognized the traffic was light. To get home, she needed to go through four traffic lights. As she sailed down the street, Collen noticed that the first two lights were green and she didn’t have to slow down. The free passes could get her home much quicker. Of course, she was pleased.

As Collen approached the third light, she could see that it was green. Always a highly busy intersection, she thought luck was certainly on her side. She could fly on through.  At that moment something happened.

Collen felt a benevolent presence with her in the car. Goose bumps went all over her body. She didn’t know what to think but “something” was definitely in there with her.  A voice said “Come to a stop at the greenlight.”

She glanced in the mirror to make sure no one was behind her. Even though stopping at a green light seemed absurd, Collen took her intuition seriously and hit the brake. Coming to a complete stop, it made no sense to stand there when the green light said go.

At that moment, an extremely large truck came barreling down the adjacent street and ran the red light. It would have killed her.

Collen gasped and whispered, “Thank You God.” Tears trickled down her cheeks. She knew that presence in the seat next to her was her guardian angel. She still gets chills when Collen remembers that night.

And you? What about your so-called hunches?  Could they be …..

A VOICE IN THE NIGHT

In Lee Strobel’s book The Case For Miracles, he chronicles the American perspective on the possibilists of a divine intervention. In this time of skepticism and doubt, I find it interesting that 51% of the country still believe the miracles stories in the Bible are true. When asked if they believe such is still possible today, 67% said yes. Only 15% said no. Baby Boomers ranked the highest with 71% believing in the possibility and young adults had a lower level of 61% believing in the miraculous. In this country, we have a remarkably high rate of people who accept the idea that their heavenly Father can intervene on their behalf.

In my experience travelling in Africa, I have found that possibly an even higher percent believes in the promise. Because those cultures are not as marked by skepticism, they appear to have a more natural child-like willingness  to believe that seems to open heaven’s doors more easily.  I do not mean that they are in some way backward or naïve. Many of these cultures are simply more open.

When I started seeking people who had some variety of divine encounter, I was surprised by how reticent many were to speak about the wonderful experiences they had received. They seemed embarrassed because the climate in their church or circle or friends was a ring of doubt. That’s been the climate in the American church. But here’s the facts. Two out of five US adults (38%) have had such an encounter. Based on 2016 data, that means a staggering 94, 792,000 Americans are convinced that God has performed at least one miracle in their lives.

No matter how you stack it up, that’s amazing. Now, I know you don’t develop your religious perspective based on statistics, but it’s nice to know how large the crowd is that you might be running in. We can encourage each other!

The purpose of these blogs has been to embolden your quest for the highest and the best. Even when we consider ourselves to be the least or most unqualified, we are actually the best candidates for a divine intervention. Remember that Jesus taught that the poor in spirit will inherit the Kingdom of God. (Matthew 5:3) Do not be afraid to reach out for the hand of God when you are in need.

Can I guarantee a miracle? Of course not. The nature of the supernatural remains a mystery. We are always reaching into a cloud with little understanding of what we will find. Remember some day we will all die. At the same time, the promise remains on the other side of that cloud.

Starting this week, you can see my interviews live on YouTube and Facebook. Simply key in MIRACLES NEVER CEASE and the interviews will come up. Tune in and see us live.

HE DOESN’T MISS A THING

I first met Dr. Helen Roseveare at a Inter-Varsity Conference in the dead of winter. It was cold outside, but she made you feel warm inside. Dr. Roseveare had been one of those marvelous dedicated missionaries from early in the last century who gave up the comforts surrounding them to reach out to countries like Uganda. During the day she was a medical doctor, but at night she worked in a brick factory to be personal and close to the natives. Tender hands needed for surgery were tested by the rough, abrasive surface of bricks. That’s a story unto itself.

Out in the jungle, a native woman died during childbirth leaving behind a premature baby and a grieving two-year old daughter. Without electricity and no incubator as well as few supplies, the baby’s life was in grave danger.  The only hot water bottle in the makeshift hospital had burst when filled with hot water to use to warm the baby. They also needed food. Dr. Roseveare asked everyone to pray. The siuation was desperate. One faith-filled little girl named Ruth prayed aloud for a hot water bottle.

“Please God send us a hot water bottle,” Ruth prayed in her childish way. “It will be not be any good by tomorrow. The baby will be dead so please send it by this afternoon.”

The prayer did seem presumptuous to Rosevearae and she feared the girl had pushed her petitions too far, but the situation was desperate so she let it go. Dr. Roseveare knew God could do anything up to a point, but wasn’t the girl’s prayer beyond the limits? The prayer made her nervous.

Doing the best they could, the small native staff went back to work. A couple of hours later a car dropped off a twenty-two-pound parcel sent from the doctor’s homeland. She had never received one such package in the four years she lived in Africa. Everyone gathered around this unexpected gift from Ireland. The orphans began opening the box and sorting through the large bundle. Bandages were found for the lepers and even some badly needed food.

Food for them! Little Ruth dug to the bottom of the box and found it! A new hot-water bottle to keep the baby warm! And more! A beautifully dressed doll was waiting for her.

Dr. Roseveare said. “I cried. I had not asked God to send the bottle.  I had not believed that He could.” The child did.

But there’s more.

The parcel had been packed five months earlier by Roseveare’s former Sunday School class. The leader had felt prompted to include a hot water bottle (for hot Africa?) and a girl contributed the doll.  This package was the only one ever to arrive and it was prayed for by the faith of a child.

What’s needed to experience miracles today? Could it be the simple faith of a child?
