HOW TO KILL A MIRACLE

In the previous blog, the account of Delores Winder’s amazing healing of her crumbling bones and near death condition conveyed how the hand of God can move even when it is unexpected. Here’s more of what followed.

Delores’ recovery also conveyed a gift of ministry. As her body was restored, ability to pray for others developed. Insights into how people could position themselves to receive the Lord’s fullest blessing followed. To use a metaphor, Delores recognized that everyone has ‘valleys’ in our emotions where we hide bitterness and resentment from the past. We may block the negative out of our mind, but yesterday’s pain can still affect todays physical systems. For example–.

In her 70’s, a woman with crippling arthritis came for prayer. As Delores began to pray, inwardly she heard the word forgiveness. She pressed the woman if there was anyone who she needed to forgive and release. The woman insisted there wasn’t, but Delores kept hearing forgiveness. Then the Holy Spirit brought another word. Brother.

When Delores probed, the woman insisted it couldn’t be the case because she had “x’d” him out of her life. Pushed further, the woman insisted it couldn’t be him because she had literally pushed him out of her mind. Delores insisted that if she wanted healing of her severe arthritis, she must forgive the brother and ask for his forgiveness. There could be no divine healing of her condition until she had done so. The woman still resisted.

Delores asked how long she had arthritis? The woman said about 12 years. Delores came again. How long had she had a problem with her brother? Again, the answer was ‘about 12 years.’ Her response hit the woman like a bomb exploding. Suddenly, she could see and understanding the link between her hidden and inner bitterness and her condition. Forgiveness brought recovery.

In this woman’s case, even though she was wealthy, she felt her brother had cheated her out of a small amount of money. The result proved to be crippling.  Forgiveness opened the door sealed shut.

Sometimes the answer for our problems is hidden within us. Jesus taught us that if we are to be forgiven, we must forgive in kind.  A miraculous recovery can be delayed or negated because the door to our heart remains closed.

The heavenly Father is a forgiving God whose love is sent in compassion. Our bitterness or anger can actually stop the entry of that healing work. Sure, often that response of reconciliation may feel humiliating, but Jesus taught that the “poor in spirit” receive the Kingdom of God. Sure better to live in that place than to perpetuate our problem.

DELORES FEARED FOR HER LIFE WHEN

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

DELORES WAS ABOUT TO DIE WHEN

How about starting the New Year with  an encouraging and amazing story. A number of years ago, Delores Winder and her husband Bill came to the church I pastored to share their story and pray with people. And did Delores ever have a story to tell!

For 19 ½ years Delores had suffered with an incurable illness. Pseudoarthrosis prevented her bones from absorbing the necessary ingredients to keep them from becoming dry and brittle.  Delore’s bones were crumbling. She had to wear a body cast to support her deteriorating spine.

This condition left Delores in constant pain. Even the performance of the simplest household tasks required medication.  Living on tranquillizers, she would eventually lose all sensation in her body. As the problem progressed, Delores’s kidneys began to fail. Her cardiopulmonary system was starting to collapse. The family gathered to plan her funeral.

However, Bill recognized a possible opportunity and took Delores to a Methodist Conference on the Holy Spirit held in Dallas, Texas. A lady named Kathryn Kuhlman was speaking and ministering. Ms. Kuhlman had an unusual capacity to convey the working of the Holy Spirit. That’s when “it” happened.

Kathryn Kuhlman began to pray and called Delores to the stage. She directed Delores to walk to the back of the stage. (Delores knew she couldn’t) Suddenly the sensation of feeling began to return.  Delores shouted, “I can feel! I can feel!” She was told to bend over which she couldn’t do— but she did. The work of the Holy Spirit continued to surge through her body. Delores knew the hand of God was upon her. Change was occurring.

Later Delores said, “I could never have imagined myself, a dying cripple who knew nothing of healing, leaving home at six o’clock in the evening and returning home completely healed by two o’clock the next morning. But let me tell you that’s how God works.”

Her crumbling bones were restored and her body healed. The Pseudoarthrosis condition vanished.

During her time in our congregation, I watched Delores teach and minister the Holy Spirit. People were moved and healed just as she had been. The message? The point? Our heavenly Father has never stopped raising up deteriorating people and broken lives. The reordering and healing of need has never stopped. God can work even when we don’t know how to ask. Should you have a need, don’t be hesitant to reach out. God’s arm is not shortened.

            Remember miracles never cease.

THE GREATEST MIRACLE

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

THE GREATEST MIRACLE

As I look toward the New Year, I ask myself a question. Out of the multitude of miracles I’ve encountered and discovered, what is the greatest miracle? If you’d go back and review my stories that span more than four years, you’ll discover amazing results as the hand of God moved. But what was the greatest one of all?

The stars in the sky and the systematic rotation of the seasons year after year through countless centuries offer their response. Even with the painful political nonsense we have had to endure, the world still continues on its way intact. Nations come; nations go. But we exist in a world governed by an unseen power that maintains order even when we degenerate into corruption, strife and combat.

            Why?

Because we have a Heavenly Father who loves us regardless of our sacrilege, inadequacies, and inconsistencies. Even if we do not turn to Him, his love endures. The love of God continues unabated to the end of time. That, my friend, is the greatest gift of all.

Oh, and remember miracles never cease.

EVIL CONTROLLED UNTIL

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

EVIL CONTROLLED UNTIL

In the last blog, we considered combatting evil and the diabolical impact Evil has on people. I suggested that I had run into this problem far more times than other areas I have previously explored. Evil and the expressions of destruction are always at work undermining even good people. Have you ever experienced an almost overwhelming desire for something or someone that you knew was wrong? You couldn’t figure out why you were so bothered? The truth is that you had plenty of help from the dark side.

Let me give you a couple of examples that happened to people who you would never have suspected being defeated.

A clergyman showed up on the doorstep running from his parish. The problems of managing a congregation full of fighting members while the church’s attendance and finances dwindled became too much. From seemingly out of nowhere, the good man was swallowed by despair. He knew spiritual intervention was necessary.

A second clergyman came with his young wife. She had always been forgiving, but had finally reached her limit. The husband had developed a strange but intimate relationship with much older women in the church. When he finally told her of these relationships during their own romantic time together, she exploded. In turn, the husband became violently furious.

As counselling continued, in both instances the clergymen couldn’t understand why they had been nearly destroyed when they actually were trying to guide and help people in their churches. They both felt “something” had somehow entered their minds and devastatingly infected them. Overwhelming doubt had swamped the men. Neither clergyman had been a bad person, just defeated. They didn’t know how the problem had occurred, but a force seemingly had slipped into the back of their minds.

Evil works like that. The Living Bible warns about “the craze for sex, the ambition to buy everything that appeals, and the pride that comes from wealth and importance.” (I John 2:16) These are some of the backdoors that allow Evil to enter undetected. Each of us have our own backdoors.

Their problem could be called Satanic oppression. How did the men get free? The two clergymen needed to be prayed for by someone who knew how to break the bondage of Evil. It wasn’t that they had slipped, it was that they had been tripped. Out of the shadows, Evil had infected them.

Your answer? Find a pastor, a priest, a clergyperson who understands evil and how to pray to defeat the nefarious. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to such a person regardless of whatever group they belong to. Surrender your problem into the hands of Jesus and you can be set free.

THEIR BEHAVIOR WAS UNCONTROLLABLE UNTIL

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

THEIR BEHAVIOR WAS UNCONTROLLABLE UNTIL

One of the realms we have not considered is combatting evil.  We have not explored the impact that the diabolical has on people. I have run into this problem far more times than most of the other areas I have previously explored. Regardless of whether or not people attribute talk of Evil to superstition or a Halloween movie, the fact of demonic influence is frighteningly real and always present, especially today. As you read this blog, you may recognize a habit, a behavior, or an experience that seems imposed or forced on you. Could that be the influence of Evil? Absolutely.

            Here’s an example.

Anglican clergyman Christopher Neil-Smith received a call to come to a prison where two Hell’s Angels had realized they knew something was deeply wrong in their lives that they couldn’t control.  Their behavior had been affected by a force they could no longer resist and wanted someone to pray for their release. One man had been sentenced for stabbing a man and the other for holding a gun on his victim. The prisoners desired help because they feared that when they left prison, they might not be able to control themselves and kill someone. Of course, a death sentence could follow. The men explained to Neil-Smith that they had participated in black magic and dedicated themselves to the devil. As they approached the priest asking him to pray for them, they were afraid to enter the chapel because of their involvement with the occult.

As Neil-Smith began praying, the first man succumbed and became unconscious. Only as he was sprinkled with water, did the prisoner revive.  The second man struggled but stayed on his feet. The clergyman prayed fervently and slowly his sense of being possessed by Evil faded. No longer did the two men want to kill or injury anyone.  Obviously, prayers penetrated their problems.

Their dread of entering the chapel disappeared and the men wanted a Bible. A Franciscan brother who worked with prisoners produced the scripture. Together they studied Mark 5:1-20, the account of a man released from the control of evil. The two convicts immediately identified with the demoniac. From Mark’s story, the two men recognized they had experienced an identical release from evil. Relieved of feeling captive by Evil, the two prisoners were spiritually free. The power of evil had been broken.

Should their account ring a bell with you, remember that Evil is strong, but prayer is stronger. Surrendering to the control of the Holy Spirit is your answer. We are not simply the captains of our own destiny. Our life’s journey involves navigating through stormy passages we cannot control. When we ask the Holy Spirit to guide us through troubled waters, the outside force of Evil cannot shipwreck us.

BLINDNESS PREVAILED UNTIL

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

BLINDNESS PREVAILED UNTIL

We often think that only special people have the capacity to participate in miracles. Do you need a special endowment to be part of the miraculous work of God? From interviewing many people who experienced the touch of God, I can tell you the issue is not a special capacity, but an openness to the possibility. The important issue for us to consider is our personal receptiveness to the working of God.

In a great many instances, nothing happened when people were struggling because there was no one there to fill the space between them and God. Talent wasn’t the issue. Availability was. Here’s an example.

Quinton Moore discovered this dimension of ministry that occurred almost without him until he allowed himself to become a conduit of grace. The issue was his availability to stand in the gap when a need occurred.

Quinton took a bus load of 15 kids on a mission trip to San Rafael, Mexico. While they were exploring the scenic area around the local church, a young blind girl walked up to the Americans. The group stared in consternation because her eyes were totally and completely white. Quinton was immediately moved and knelt down to begin praying for her eyes. Quinton knew he had to do something.

A white, milky substance started running through his fingers. Grabbing a cloth, Quinton began wiping her eyes. From underneath the white film, beautiful brown eyes emerged.

The child blinked several times and then looked at him. She abruptly screamed and called for her mother. Running her hands across the woman’s face, the child made sure it was truly her mother. She had never seen anything in her life and had to make sure of what was rushing through her mind. But her eyes had been restored.

And what about the teens watching? Their hearts were changed as well. They witnessed the results of availability.

In our quest to understand miracles and divine interventions, Quinton Moore’s experience added an additional dimension. While he had grown up in an environment where unique encounters occurred, he had developed a skepticism that caused him to retreat. Only an unexpected need pushed him into praying for divine mediation.

Quinton discovered that divine appointments happen without any expectation on his part. The occasions simply occurred because of a need. He made himself available for whatever followed. The results speak for themselves.

His example instructs that our willingness to respond is more important than any gift we bring.

What follows when we pray is up to God. Our job is simply to intercede. Perhaps, now is a good time to make a decision to be more open.

            Remember; miracles never cease.

MOVEMENT WAS IMPOSSIBLE UNTIL

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

MOVEMENT WAS IMPOSSIBLE UNTIL

Art Shaw remained a fascinating guy. At age 95, he was a retired Army Colonel who fought in World War II and all the conflicts that followed. Art received a serious back injury that required a spinal fusion from L1 to S1. Twenty-two units of blood were needed. A team of doctors and nurses was required even to move him in the bed. Of course, any motion was extremely painful. Nevertheless, what the staff called a “log roll” was necessary to prevent pneumonia.

In the middle of the night, Art heard a voice call his name. “Art, it’s time to log roll.” No one was in the room. The voice came again. Because of the pain and serious possible complications, Art knew how impossible movement would be. “Art, do what I tell you and you won’t be hurt.” Art intuitively knew to obey.

He opened his eyes and saw something like a black tube extending into infinity. At the top was a bright, concentrated light. With the instruction to turn over came the assurance that they would help him do so. He made the log roll and went back to sleep.

Later in the night the voice called again. “Art, it’s time to roll.” The same assurance that he would be helped was there. He turned over. Easily.

When his wife Joan arrived the next morning, Art told her that he turned over twice.

“Impossible!” she insisted. “You couldn’t have!”

She rushed out of the room to confront the nurse. “What are you giving him?” she forcefully inquired. “What drugs? What pain killers? He’s hallucinating!”

The nurse frowned. “What are you talking about? We didn’t give him any additional medications last night.

Joan dragged the nurse and her assistants back to his room. “He couldn’t have turned by himself! The pain would be too great. Too dangerous. But look!”

The nurse stared for a moment and then ran for the doctor. Dr. Shephard came in. Astonished! There was no medical explanation for how Art Shaw could have been repositioned – but it had happened – twice.

The angel continued to speak several other times. “Art, you will be alright. You’ll be okay.”

Art told me that the Angel always has the same particular tone in voice. Distinct. Individual. Whenever the voice sounds, Art knows who is speaking and listens.

When Art told me this story, he was relating how he had come to know that a guardian angel was with him. Like a voice speaking inside his head, when his name was called direction followed. Today at important times, Art’s angel always shows up and gives him the orientation that he needs.

Believe in Angels? Art certainly did. Oh, and remember miracles never cease.

DEATH DIDN’T STOP RUTH

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

DEATH DIDN’T STOP RUTH

With her bright red-hair and rambunctious style, Ruth Eaton was one of the most delightful persons I’ve ever known. Ruth was always on the go. Visiting a friend in a nursing home, 86 year-old Ruth discovered that many of these “old” people had no one left who knew anything about them or cared for them. She simply couldn’t let this be! The work she began on their behalf never stopped until Ruth died at age 93.

Ruth Eaton made it her job to find a gift for every lonely person in a nursing home in Oklahoma City. She watched for specials in the newspaper and came up with everything from women’s socks to men’s underwear. Her living room was piled high with boxes and wrapping paper for her “best buys” being prepared for delivery on Christmas Eve.

Ruth’s only daughter had died at age 44. I had the service for her and knew that the death had nearly killed Ruth. At that time, I couldn’t fully comprehend how the affect lingered for years. Only after the death of my oldest son did I realize how difficult it had been to deal with the death of a child. Ruth didn’t speak of her experience often, but it was always there.

On this particular Friday, I told my secretary not to let anyone in or any phone calls get through until I had my sermon completed. Thirty minutes later, I could hear Ruth raising a ruckus. “I don’t care what he said!” she yelled at the secretary. “I demand to speak with him NOW!” And in came Ruth.

She had been sitting on her couch wrapping presents when she began to think about her beloved daughter and wondered where she was today. At the same time, Ruth thought about her mother who had died many decades earlier. The remembrance of these two important and significant persons always remained important to her.

Ruth abruptly had the strangest feeling. She looked down at the end of the couch and there stood her mother and daughter. Though they had been many years apart in age, they now both looked exactly the same age at about 25. Ruth stared in amazement. Mother and daughter smiled back at her, reflecting their joy at what she was doing. The three of them seemed to communicate telepathically, sharing their love and devotion.

Ruth swallowed hard and looked away. When she looked again, they were gone. For a long time, Ruth sat there in astonishment, trying to grasp what she had experienced. Whatever else Ruth might have been uncertain about, there was no question in her mind, but that she had been visited by her deceased mother and her daughter.

That’s when Ruth came to my office.

What did her encounter mean? Ruth was certain that her view of eternity had been assured. Think about it.

            Remember… miracles never cease.
