FINDING HEALING

In talking with people who have experienced the touch of God, I have been exploring why some people do not have the same results. In subsequent blogs we will explore some of these results. One factor that has stood out are folks who don’t endure. Some people in need simply aren’t persistent. Here is an example of a person who kept chasing a touch of grace.

Melanie Davis said, “I was just a Christian on cruise control, rolling along with whatever came my way. I loved God and knew He loved me, but I thought I was here to just work on myself, always trying to live up to His expectations.”

Ever since she was a little girl, Melanie Davis struggled with severe allergies to all sorts of things—dust, weeds, dog dander…you name it! Even with a daily routine of capsules, Melanie found it difficult just to breathe and sleep. “I kept everyone awake at night,” recalls Melanie, “and that June 2007, it was particularly bad. The whites of my eyes were swollen, so much so that they covered part of my pupils. I spent my days in a fog because of how bad the allergies were, and it didn’t seem like things would ever change.”

Sitting in the back of the room with her tissue box in hand, Melanie spent the first night of a Summer Bible Conference trying not to fall asleep. Miserable and full of antihistamine, she listened as the pastor began telling a story about a very young girl who was laying her hands on people and seeing them healed.

The speaker asked if someone was struggling with breathing and seasonal-type things, giving them trouble sleeping. If so, they should stand up. At that moment, Melanie felt like there were arms under hers lifting her to her feet. She stood, along with a few others around the room, when the pastor called out, ‘Well, there’s Melanie Davis! Good to see you!”’ She began turning every shade of red.

The speaker then directed those nearby to lay hands on those who were standing. With her eyes closed, Melanie could feel the warmth as hands were laid on her shoulders, surrounding her in prayer.

I don’t remember what the speaker said or did,” remarks Melanie, “but at the end of the prayer, my eyes popped wide open. I could clearly see everything around me. My eyes didn’t itch at all, and I could feel the swelling leave. I was stunned and started crying. Then I looked to my left, and there was that young girl the speaker was telling us about. She had prayed for me! I was healed, head to toe, as quickly as the snap of my fingers.

“I knew that night that God was real. I figured He probably was with me, but now I knew He was alive and that I was healed! Don’t be discouraged. You don’t need to work for it; it’s already there, just waiting for you to believe it. I may not have all the answers, but I do know that God wants us to be like 3 John 2, in good health.”(I pray that you may enjoy good health … even as your soul is getting along well)

Melanie knew her healing had stuck like glue when she went on a bike ride in the same area where she had struggled to breathe before, and had no problems of any kind—except maybe keeping up with her kids! She can walk through a pasture, rub her face in a bed of weeds, mow, camp, fish, and cuddle with a dog without one single sniffle or sneeze. In the past eight years, she has not sneezed, and her eyes have not swelled.

Melanie came with expectations and put herself in a place where empowerment could follow. An exciting example to follow.

THE HEALING TOUCH

Last week I suggested that too often people discount their capacity to pray for others or may let an  extraordinary moment slip away. Later they may wonder if they really did have an ability to communicate healing. They did!

I want to continue to encourage you to explore healing ministry. Here’s another example of divine healing.  Andrew Wommack is an American minister working in healing. This account comes from his ministry.

Teresa Houghteling’s dominant emotion was fear. She lamented, “The disease that was in my body was slowly killing me from the inside out, and there was nothing I could do about it.”

Every six months, Teresa Houghteling had to get her bloodwork checked to see if her organs were still functioning properly. She was suffering from the deadly and incurable Sjögren’s syndrome. After dealing with the disease for several years, it had become something she just had to live with. However, in 2007, Teresa had an encounter with God and rededicated herself to Him, beginning a new journey.

Unfortunately, Teresa’s body did not seem to line up with her inner transformation. In fact, her physical symptoms worsened. In 2011, she was diagnosed with lupus, degenerative disk disease in her back, a bulged disk, and carpal tunnel in her right arm. Teresa remembered, “The emotion that followed was pure confusion.”

Teresa began studying the Bible with new seriousness. She began to understand the importance of how revelation makes words contain power. “I remember Andrew (Wommack) making the statement that one of the reasons we don’t get healed is because our physical bodies are more real to us than our spirit man.” For Teresa, transformation was now well on its way.

“On my way home from a conference I thought I heard God say, ‘So, if you’re healed, doesn’t that include your thyroid gland?’” Fear tried to creep back in as Teresa thought about what would happen if she stopped her medication. However, she was determined not to allow fear to dominate her life again!

Teresa’s journey brought her to a place of complete health and freedom. However, she will be the first one to tell you that it was not overnight. “It was a process for me. I had emotional healing that took place before the physical healing… I became so focused on my relationship with God that I honestly couldn’t say when symptoms began to leave my body… I know that no matter what comes my way, His Word is true, and no one will ever be able to take that away from me.” Healing was completed.

Different people have different experiences and we can learn something from all of them. Teresa offers insight into the power of biblical words to develop an expectation and faith.

THE HEALING TOUCH

Over the years I have probably more stories of healings than any other expression of the miraculous. One of the interesting aspects that often occurs is that once a person has received a touch of the hand of God, they have the capacity to reach out to others with a new ability to bring recovery. Sometimes called “The Healing Touch,” a person’s hands may become warm or even hot while they are praying. When they place their palms on the other person’s area of need, results follow.

Too often people discount their capacity to pray for others or let an  extraordinary moment slip away. Later they may wonder if they really did have an ability to communicate heling. They did!

Here’s another story of divine healing.

Maurice Tester had been a property consultant for some time when his back began giving him fits. The pain became intense. After a medical examination, he was diagnosed with a prolapsed disk. A ‘slipped’ (prolapsed) disk causes sudden, severe lower back pain. Often called a herniated disk, the disorder presses on a nerve root which causes severe pain and other symptoms in the suffer’s leg. Maurice was told that only surgery could correct the problem and that was with possible limited success.

Maurice Tester didn’t like that prognosis. Somewhere along the way he had heard of Ted Fricker who was rumored to have “healing hands.” Maurice went to see him.

Ted Fricker stretched him out on a table before he began running his hands lightly up and down Maurice’s back. In about ten minutes, the pain decreased and then was gone.

When Maurice returned to the specialist, the doctor confirmed he was healed, but said it was impossible for Maurice to have a natural remission.

But he did.

When he returned to talk with Ted Fricker, the healer told him the power to restore Maurice came completely and totally from God.  He explained that all he did was listen to the Holy Spirit speaking in his mind and do what he was told. Maurice went home a satisfied and restored man.

I have personally seen such healing experiences over and over again. Sometimes people are reluctant to have someone pray for them.  Sometimes they are even reluctant to ask for healing. That’s the skepticism and reservation that a secular age has imparted. Sometimes the problem must be prayed for a number of times.  Nevertheless, healing experiences come every day.

Don’t be afraid to pray or seek someone who does. Remember to …expect the unexpected!

THE TOTALLY UNEXPECTED

Ed Wilkinson’s background in neuropsychology convinced him that faith was a neurosis employed to avoid reality. Then his eight-year- old son got sick.

On November 1984 Brad Wilkinson was diagnosed with two holes in his heart which also impaired his lungs. Surgency was immediately scheduled.

As the time of the operation came closer, Brad began giving away his toys. His parents could tell that he doubted his own survival. One day he asked his father, “Am I going to die?”  His father told him that people survived this procedure but to be honest some didn’t.

“Can Jesus heal me?” Brad asked.

Ed blanched at the question and said he’d have to get back to him.  After a couple of days of anguished prayer, Ed studied Philippians 4:13. “I can do all things through him who strengthen me.” Ed was able to tell his son that God does heal. If this didn’t happen in Brad’s case, they still had the hope of eternal life. When a visiting pastor came, He asked Brad if he believed God could heal him. Brad said he did and they prayed together.

Before his surgery at the University of Missouri hospital, tests were performed. The operation was expected to take four hours. However, after an hour, the surgeon called for Ed to look at two x-rays. The earlier one showed the two holes in his heart. The second x-ray showed a wall of some sort where the holes had been sealed shut.

“I have never seen this before,” the surgeon said. “Gone.”

There was no misdiagnosis as the first film demonstrated. “You can count this as a miracle,” the doctor concluded. “Somebody somewhere must have been praying.”

Today Brad is in his thirties with a family and business of his own. He has never had any heart or lung problems since.

Ed has changed his mind about miracles and healing.

Having spent a number of years collecting and studying miracle stories, I discovered some are instantaneous and others take much longer. Some are expected; others unexpected. There is no formula to explain when and where they occur. The bottom line? Ed found it. “I can do all things through him who strengthen me.”

LET HIM WHO HAS EARS TO HEAR

The question often is asked, “Is it helpful to pray when a condition appears irreversible? Consider the case of a nine-year-old British girl. (We shall call Mary)

In September 1982, Mary developed a virus infection that damaged both of her ears, leaving her deaf. Dr. R.F. Gardner examined Mary and noted the problem that he certified as deafness. The diagnosis was untreatable bilateral sensorineural deafness. Mary’s parent were told that there was nothing that could be done except to give her hearing aids that would help only to a limited degree.

Mary didn’t want to wear hearing aids the rest of her life and began praying about her condition. Her family and friends joined in and prayed with her. She began to feel that God was telling her to especially pray for the one problem.  Passages of scripture kept coming to her mind. If you have the faith of a child … ask and you shall receive …your faith have made you whole.

On March 8, 1983 one of the hearing aids was damaged at school. The problem was fixed and readjusted for Mary. The next evening Mary was in bed when she realized something was different. She ran down stairs yelling, “Mother! I can hear you!”

Her mother couldn’t believe it. Mary could even hear whispers. When she called the doctor he responded that he didn’t believe her.  “It’s not possible!”

The following day Mary was tested again. The audiogram and tympanogram were fully normal. The audiologists could give no explanation for what had occurred. “I have never seen anything like this in my life.”

The doctor concluded “A belief in the occurrence of cases of miraculous healing today is intellectually acceptable.”

We started with a question. Should you keep praying when the situation seems hopeless. Mary’s answer is by all means! In this age of uncertainty, many things remain uncertain. But prayer isn’t one of them.

MIRACLE IN MANILA

You may remember the reign of Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines. After years of corruption, Marcos ran against Corazon Aquino. Without question, she was the winner as the public had enough of Marcos. However, the long arm of Marcos stuffed the ballot box and he declared himself the winner. The public knew the truth and surged into the streets in protest. Even a segment of the military attempted a coup that failed. The country was in a total uproar.

Recognizing the overwhelming opposition, but determined to stay in office, Marcos rolled out the military tanks and sent soldiers into the streets. The people continued to protest and many rushed into churches to pray. A country with a strong Christian population, the citizens feared the worst.

Marcos had the crack marine corps in his hip pocket. He believed these loyal troops would do exactly what they were told. The tanks rolled into the streets, descending on the protestors. Many of the citizens dropped to their knees or laid down in the path of the oncoming tanks. Both sides were prepared to fight to the death. The signal to attack was given. The tanks were to fire on the crowd.

What happened next was totally unexpected!

The marines riding on the top of the tanks saw the clouds form a cross in the sky. Out of the formation a beautiful lady in blue appeared. The lady appeared to descend in front of the tanks.  She stopped directly in front of the killing machines and told them not to “harm her children.”

The soldiers were awestruck, they stopped the tanks, got down, and joined the people. The revolt was finished. Once the military joined the citizens, Marco was finished.  He immediately fled the country.

Shortly after the revolt. The Bishop of Manila visited Sister Lucia, the last surviving member of the trio witnessing the appearance of the Virgin Mary at Fatima.  Now a Cardinal, he was surprised that Sister Lucia knew everything that had happened in the revolution. She said that Corazon Aquino was a gift of God and predicted the Philippines would help in bringing Christianity to China.

The foregoing is history. Is it possible for the hand of God to intervene in politics? Obviously so. We have been calling on people to pray daily for America and the future of this country. If God changed the chaos in Manila, why can’t He do the same in this country. Gives you something to think about — and hopefully pray about.

WHEN SLEEP COMES WITH A PROMISE    

Recently a friend shared a story that touched my memory. At the time I was living in Laguna Beach, California when a nurse at the hospital called. A member of the church, she knew that I spoke Spanish and wanted to know if I could help the nursing staff with a child dying with cancer. The child’s parents came from Mexico and could not even speak Spanish. Their native language was a Zapotec dialect from the mountains in southern Mexico. Consequently, the nurse had virtually no communication with them. The staff needed help and wanted me to interpret.

The child had bumps all over her body where the cancer had created lumps under her skin. Nurse Dinah said the small girl was in considerable pain and had almost no time left. They hoped I could make some connection with the parents as well as help the child with her pain. I immediately left for the hospital, drove up the coast, and quickly found the room. I walked in with intimidation not knowing what I would find and fearing the worst. Maybe, we couldn’t communicate at all.

The parents were in tears and we fumbled with words as I tried to offer consolation. I could tell they understood little of what I was attempting to say. However, to my surprise the five-year old child and I made instant contact and we talked about their situation. I could tell that the child was actually trying to comfort her grieving parents.

“My name is Blanca” she told me and began to describe what she saw when she went to sleep.

“Beautiful people are all around me,” Blanca said. “They seem to fly and give me such comfort. I don’t seem to hurt as much when I see them.”

“Does this always happen when you sleep?” I asked.

“Yes,” Blanca said. “Always.”

With that she rolled over and took a nap. I sat quietly with her parents. In about thirty minutes she woke up. I leaned over the bed.

“Did you see the angels?”

“Oh, yes,” Blanca said. “But this time there was a man with him. I didn’t know his name, but he smiled at me with the kindest smile I ever saw. I wonder who he was.”

I thought for a moment. “If you see him again, you might call him Jesus and see if he answers to that name.”  

“Okay,” Blanca said. “I will.”

She rolled over again and I could see the pain was increasing. How could one not profoundly care for this child? I just sat there praying for her relief. Finally, she rolled over again.

“He was there!” Blanca said. “Just like you said and his name is Jesus. He talked to me.”

“What did he say?”

“He said the next time I go to sleep, I don’t have to come back and my pain will be gone.”

“Wonderful,” I said. “Just wonderful.”

Blanca smiled for the firs time and then rolled over again and went back to sleep. Blanca did not wake up.

I have thought of her often over the years. In the most unexpected way, her death was actually a miracle. She saw angels and God’s provision for children who slip away in the night. For them there is no darkness.

Did not Jesus say, “whoever welcomes a child in my name welcomes me?” (Matthew 18:5)

Remember to expect the unexpected!

A LIGHT FROM BEYOND

When Jana Branson was four-years-old, she had an usual playmate. Actually, she thought he was her brother. They would sit and talk. If she became afraid, he would always comfort her. Even at night as she was going asleep, he would sit on the bed as she dosed off. At one point, he told her someday Jana would become an Episcopal Church priest. Oh, yes, his name was Jesus.

As Jana grew up, her friend faded away and she realized he was not as real as some of her other acquaintances. Nevertheless, Jana knew he had been a reality in her life and took him seriously. When she told her parents about wanting to be a priest, they informed her that such didn’t happen in the Episcopal Church. One had to be a man. Of course, Jana was angry. However, with the passing years, that rule changed and today woman are clergy.

Much later in life with grown children, Jana went to seminary and became an Episcopal priest. Her childhood relationship with Jesus continued to guide her life. While the revelations might have faded for a time, the special dimension remained in the back of her mind. Today, it is difficult for her to put these discoveries into words, the numinous is in many ways beyond words. Nevertheless, spiritual openness has guided her life.

More than interesting, you may find Jana’s experience to be helpful to you. Perhaps, you’ve had something similar and doubted the reality. Jana’s continuing spiritual encounters can help you find reassurance. I’ve found that experiences with God break in unexpectedly for many people. Here’s more of Jana’s story.

When Jana begins to reach beyond her daily experience, a bright white light often appeared. While she could only see an outline of a figure in the bright while light, she intuitively knew that once again she was communicating with Jesus of Nazareth. She was touching an adult expression of her childhood experience. The bright light guided her away from some detour situations. These flashing moments were revelatory and got her back on the right track again.

When Jana prayerfully meditates on her life’s decisions, the light often breaks in and brings insight. Today, one of the most important moments comes as she is officiating during Holy Communion. The Sanctus prayer proclaiming “Holy, Holy, Lord God of power and might …” can become a moment of encounter. During the prayers of consecration when the celebrant prays, “With Angels and Archangels and all the company of heaven who forever sing the hymn…” is such a special moment. Often the white light breaks in and Jana will see parents, friends, people who have passed on standing around her as she prays. In these moments of Holy Communion, heaven opens its doors to Jana.

Seeing the unseen? That’s been Jana’s life experience. She doesn’t talk about it often, but it has defined her sense of reality.  Jana’s special ability gives us encouragement in our own journey forward. We may not see what she does, but we can have the same assurance of what is there.

That’s what divine interventions are all about.
