MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!
Rev. Robert L. Wise, PhD explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.
HELP IN TIME OF NEED
Many people are surprised to learn that the miraculous dimension has played such an important part in bringing people to faith in countries around the world. The problem in America has been a lack of openness. Author J.P. Moreland writes that a major factor in the Christian revival in the Third World has been through signs and wonders as expressions of God’s love for His people. Estimates as high as 70% of new believers are brought in through this door. Other estimates suggest that 90% of the growth of the Church in China has come through healing miracles. When people are in need, they become open to the possibilities in a profound way.
I saw this happen in my own church a number of years ago. I was holding a seminar on a Saturday morning when the front door of the church opened. A brother and sister brought in their father who was obviously struggling to find his way. I stopped the seminar and walked over to the family. At that moment, I realized the father’s eyes were open, but the man was blind. He needed his children to keep from falling or running into a wall.
“Can I help you?” I asked.
Even before they answered, I could see that they had a different nationality from most of the people in Oklahoma City. I was to learn they were Iranians and had immigrated to America during the upheaval in that country. (Names have been changed to protect their privacy)
“We are Muslims,” Janan said. “But a friend told us that your church prays for the sick. We don’t care about any differences we might have. My brother Radin and I are deeply, deeply worried about our father. Can you pray for him to see again? Right now?”
I glanced back and forth between the brother and sister. Radin looked even more panicked and distressed.
“I have no power to heal anyone,” I explained. “But I can call on our Heavenly Father to touch your father. The Holy Spirit cannot be seen, but he brings healing in His presence.”
“Please do this thing right now,” Janan pleaded. “We must have help.”
By this time some of the people in the seminar had gathered around us. “Let’s all lay our hands on this good man and pray together,” I said. “We need God’s touch right now.”
The group began praying fervently for the healing power of God to be released. Together we interceded for the father’s blindness for several minutes. Abruptly, he cried out, “I can see! I can see!” The brother and sister began to weep as their father walked around confirming his sight was restored.
Although no one asked this Muslim family to respond in any particular way, the brother and sister joined our church and confirmed their newfound faith. Such is what is happening all over the world today. And in America? Sure, the same happenings occur with those who reach out in faith. Healings are a confirmation of the Gospel story.
Just remember. Miracles never cease.
