KICKING OFF THE NEW YEAR

Surprise! Surprise! A New Year!

Well, by now you know we’re already well into a new year and a new decade… with the headlines already terrorizing your morning. If ever you needed a boost to tell you that God is still working in your world, perhaps, this is the time.

Let me reassure you that all you’ve read about in these blogs over the years is continually true and all still applies. So hang on, the best is yet to be!

One of my last reports in 2019 was about Joan Stenke’s experience of having the Holy Spirit drive her through a deadly fog and come out the other side safely. Quite a story! Well, here’s some more of Joan’s experience.

Joan certainly knows the meaning of tragedy. She was talking on the phone to her son-in-law when he committed suicide. Of course, such an experience strikes anyone to the core of their being. Later a grandson, who she loved dearly, drown while swimming. Once again Joan had to face horrendous tragedy. While it can take years to live through the grief these experiences would visit on anyone, Joan still continued to struggle with her loses only to discover her daughter committed suicide with the same gun that had killed her son-in-law. How much can any one person endure?

For three years she went to bed every night crying. The agony wrecked her physically as well as emotionally. Finally, one night she cried out, “Lord! You’ve got to do something. I refuse to go on through life living with such overwhelming pain.”

Lying alone in her bed, she felt a tap on her shoulder. A voice said, “I understand your pain. You are not a woman who can’t understand.”

Joan felt an image rush through her mind. She could see the Crucifixion occurring and stared in awe. Joan realized something was happening to her entire body. She seemed to be leaving her earthly body behind and felt what she called “a translation.” (Like translating one language into another, the idea is going from one state of existence to another) Joan was someplace else where she seemed to be walking with Jesus. While she never saw his face, Joan knew who the figure was. They talked together and he shared the meaning of suffering. Time no longer had any significance as she seemed to be in eternity.

The experience lingered in her mind as one of the most vivid experiences in her life. The reality of God lingered. The person of Jesus was real.

Everything changed and the church became important to her.

Most of all, the pain was gone.

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

A SEASON OF MIRACLES

For the last three years, I have been writing about miraculous experiences and what the recipients thought, experienced, and now believe. Because these events run counter-current to our secular oriented society, I am sure many readers remain somewhat mystified by such events still happening today. It occurred to me that this is the season to clarify further where it all began.

Miracles? Just take a look at the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 1, starting in verse 18. Keep reading. The account of the birth of Jesus Christ is one long miracle story. The story begins by telling us that a young woman is going to have a baby … through the Holy Spirit!

Sorry guys. We aren’t even involved in how the conception began. God alone is the initiator of the entire event. Several times, the Gospel account goes out of the way to say this is all the work of the Holy Spirit.

Fact One: The Holy Spirit miraculously created a birth.

Wow! And do we ever get stories about angels. In his sleep, an angel came to Joseph in a dream and told him what had occurred. The name Immanuel, which means ‘God with us,’ was given by the angel. We get more angel accounts in Luke’s gospel. An angel appeared to Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, and told him of John’s coming birth. Luke continues telling us that the angel Gabriel was sent to Nazareth to talk with Mary. We are even given part of their conversation.

Next the angels appeared to shepherds watching their flocks on the night Jesus was born. In fact, “a great company” of the heavenly hosts came with Gabriel.
Fact Two: Angels were everywhere.

Luke further gives us the story of Jesus being taken to Jerusalem for presentation in the Temple as the Law of Moses required. Both Simeon and the prophetess Anna realized that they had now seen the coming of the promised Messiah. A divine intervention had opened their eyes to this miraculous and long expected event. Simeon proclaimed that he had seen “a light for revelation to the Gentiles and glory to your (his) people Israel.”

Fact Three: When the Holy Spirit intervened, he brought a message. Sound familiar?

Sure. We’re seeing in these three facts what has been revealed over and over again in the lives of contemporary people. What happened in the beginning of the Christian story continues in the present. Therefore, this year as you remember the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, keep in mind that what he brought continues to be a gift every day of every year.

DEE DEE’S RECOVERY

DEE DEE’S RECOVERY

Recently I was talking with an old friend that I have known for decades. We were reminiscing about past experiences. Dee Dee Bailey began sharing an extraordinary encounter she had when I was pastor of a church she attended. Dee Dee had developed kidney stones that became increasingly serious. She ended up in the hospital and that’s where the divine intervention happened.

Her doctor told her he would be gone for the weekend and had turned her case over to a fellow physician who would care for her. The other guy forgot!

On Saturday Dee Dee realized her condition was worsening but no one seemed to be paying any attention to her. By Sunday morning, she was in a crisis. A nurse called the doctor who realized that he had forgotten about her needs and he rushed in. Her blood pressure began dropping drastically. Her temperature soared. As she drifted away, Dee Dee could hear the nurse saying, “Doctor, we’re losing her. We are losing her!”

At that moment Dee Dee sat up … except her body was still laying on the bed. She felt herself rising upward toward a corner in the ceiling. When she looked around, two gigantic figures were standing on each side of her. Intuitively, she knew they were angels. Dee Dee took one last look at her body while the doctor and nurse frantically worked over her. The angels abruptly whisked her away. She flew through the ceiling and off toward this magnificent overwhelming bright light. Along the way, Dee Dee heard musical sounds far beyond anything she had ever heard in her life. No one had yet composed such a symphony.

And then she came to the end of the journey and stepped out into the presence of Jesus Christ, standing there with his arms wide open. She rushed toward him and he hugged her. Even though she had two young daughters, the all-consuming peace that she felt so engulfed her that Dee Dee was ready to stay and leave the world behind.

In a kind, gentle voice, Jesus told her that she had to go and return back because Dee Dee had tasks and duties yet to be performed. Like a giant bungee cord hurling her backward, Dee Dee returned down the same path that had taken her into eternity. She plunged back into the hospital room. As she described it, Dee Dee said she “flopped” back into her body and opened her eyes. The nurse exclaimed, “She’s alive! Alive!”

Dee got well and her medical problems disappeared.

What did she do with her God given responsibilities? Living in Norman, Oklahoma where the University of Oklahoma is located, Dee Dee began working with college students and befriending kids in need. She taught the ministry of healing and brought many collegiate into prayer work.

Did she fulfill her divinely imparted assignment? Absolutely.
