WHAT HAPPENS ON THE OTHER SIDE? 

This past Friday I attended an extraordinary dedication of the shrine to the first martyr of the American Roman Catholic Church. I had just finished writing a book on the life of Father Stanley Rother who was martyred defending the Christian faith in Guatemala. For Father Rother to be officially recognized as a Saint, there must be a miracle resulting from the martyr’s intervention. Since I had been writing about similar “near-death” type happenings and was writing about Fr. Rother, although a Protestant, I wondered about what had happened after this important person had crossed the threshold of eternity.

Just as I was finishing writing the book The Making of a Martyr, I got a phone call from the person editing my manuscript. She told me about a story that appeared on a Tulsa television station and  in The Daily Oklahoman July 27, 2022. Here’s a reproduction of part of that publication.

Johnny Workman believes he’s here today because he got help from beyond. “I felt something kind of hit me in the back and when I turned, I got trapped,” he explains. Trapped by a run-away 30,000-pound asphalt roller. The weight of two elephants pinned him against the roller, crushing him. 

“I saw myself in the mirror, I saw myself changing colors and then I blacked out,” he says. 

Workman suffered 27 fractures to his chest alone. While in a medically induced coma, his family placed a medal of Blessed Stanley Rother on Workman’s chest and prayed for the intersession of the Priest who grew up in Okarche, Oklahoma. 

“I believe that’s when it happened—the miracle,’ says Workman. Workman remains unwavering in the vision he experienced while unconscious. “He [Fr. Stanley Rother] picked me up and we were walking together- Mother Mary on one side and he was on the other. Stanley Rother grabbed me by the hand, and we were walking. [I] don’t know if we were going to heaven.”

Suddenly, Johnny Workman woke up in a hospital. The doctors were flabbergasted.  

Workman describes his unexpected recovery has nothing short of miraculous. “Doctors nurses and staff would tell me almost every day I was lucky to be alive.” 

A letter of his account has been delivered to the Oklahoma City Archdiocese describing his now healed body as the result of more than good luck. 

“Maybe it’s a miracle in the churches- but I know with 100% fact that it was a miracle in my eyes,” says Workman. 

Most Protestants generally wouldn’t know what to say about this kind of story. Roman Catholics and the Orthodox Churches would have no problem accepting it. Wherever you are, it’s an event that challenges your thoughts. Don’t forget that many churches say the Apostles Creed every Sunday affirming “we believe in the communion of the saints.”

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DIE? 

Several years ago, I wrote CROSSING THE THRESHOLD OF ETERNITY. The book grew out of my interviews with people who had near death experiences. Cindi Pursley, my neighbor in the Colorado Rockies, was a hospice nurse and shared with me some of her observations as people were dying. The accounts quickened my interest and led to fascinating discoveries that are in my book.

What happens at the moment of death?

Recently, I was in a class on the Talmud (the authority on Jewish practice developed from the Torah, the first five books of the Old Testament) when I noticed the person sitting next to me had on a sweat shirt indicating she worked for a hospice. In the ensuing conversation, she related what happened as she watched the moment when a person passed away. Her eyes widened in amazement.

While this blog doesn’t reflect my usual reports on miracles, it can help us comprehend the importance of Eternity, the world beyond. Insight into transcendence better equips us to grasp how the power of God breaks into our world.

Anyone who has observed the moment of death has seen the radical change in the person’s appearance. Something far more significant than a heart stopping occurs. Often, the  change certainly suggests someone leaving their body behind.

As my friend and I were talking a few days ago, she described how she had always wondered how the soul might leave the body. Orah (Hebrew name for anonymity sake) had been intrigued by what might happen. As the person she was working with died, Orah saw a spark of light leap from the body and disappear into the night. Orah was overwhelmed!

Could you see such an event happen? Possibly more often than you might imagine. YouTube now carries a series of pictures and discussions of this same phenomena. Under the heading “Actual Pictures of the Soul Leaving the body” or “What happens at the time of death,” you can see images that will surprise you and may shock some readers. I believe you will find the pictures to be significant. Trick photography? It’s your call but don’t make a quick decision.

Interestingly enough, physician Duncan MacDougall did an experiment with six patients who were dying. He postulated that the soul must weigh something. Dr. MacDougall discovered that after a patient had immediately died, he lost 21 grams. While not scientifically verified, the 21 gram experiment fits the pattern that the “essence” of the person traveled on.

My point? Regardless of what current secular society might think, life and death remain in the hands of God. Our ability to relate to our heavenly Father remains the most significant task of our life… and life does go on. We need to get ready for the future … today.

SOME TIMES—IT TAKES TIME

Recently while going through by files, I ran across a letter from Vicki Leonard in Sacramento, California. Vicki had been part of a mission I brought to Christ Community Church several decades ago. At the time she had been struggling with curvature of the spine and deterioration of the muscles in her legs. The result was on-going back pain.

Vicki came forward so the team could pray for her. After the intercessions, I asked Vicki if she felt anything. Even though she hesitantly said, “I don’t know,” she had felt warmth surge through her body with the love being so strong during the service. She called it a ‘warm glow.’ When Vicki returned to her seat, she realized that the pain on one side of her back was gone and did not return.

When Vicki was quite small, she had an extremely serious problem that the prayers of her parents and friends had been significant in returning Vicki to normal health and the ability to walk. She knew healing was possible. However, she struggled with understanding what had occurred back then. Vicki wasn’t sure how to understand the work of the Holy Spirit.

The night at Christ Community Church I talked about who the Holy Spirit is and how this presence of God often works. Following the talk, what happened when Vicki came and knelt in prayer?

The clouds in her thinking had disappeared. The mystery became faith. When she came forward, Vicki was ready to be open to a deeper work of the Holy Spirit. She was prepared to receive what God had for her.

As I read her letter, I realized again how often confusion or misinformation can disrupt the blessing that God is sending to people in need. Moreover, I was reminded of how the intervention of God can take time and work in steps that build on each other. Some times the healing can take hours or days to be completed. Finally, I am reminded of the difference the results can make when someone else prays for us. A team of several people can move a mountain! Vickie reminds us to be patient and be open to what our heavenly Father wants to give us.         

And remember miracles never cease!

A FRIEND IN NEED

I am always amazed by the stories that describe the unexpected appearances of the Unexpected. Over the past few years, I shared some of these accounts that happen in all kinds of places including winter blizzards. Right now we are preparing for a “whopper” starting this week and dumping ice on the roads. That makes this a good time to remember what is possible when the cold winds blow in.

Jacinta Williams of Stuart, Florida has just such a story.

When an unexpected seizure hit her, Jacinta was terrified. With no history of epilepsy or any similar disorder, she was diagnosed with having a reaction to a prescription. While working on her job as a hair stylist, another attack knocked her on the floor still holding a bottle of hair color in her hand. Blackness swallowed her. Slowly she began to return to consciousness.

Jacinta could hear muffled voices around her. While she was struggling to regain full awareness, she could hear more voices above her. Slowly, she began to realize that someone was holding her hand. When Jacinta opened her eyes, she saw a beautiful, smiling woman with long blonde hair and sparkling eyes. Jacinta guessed the woman must be around thirty-years-old.

As the woman looked into Jacinta’s eyes, she didn’t say a word. And yet — Jacinta clearly heard her say, “Do not be afraid. Soon you will be well.”

An ambulance arrived and the paramedics started preparing her for the ride to the hospital. She looked at them and her co-workers. “Where’s the beautiful lady who held my hand.” They shook their heads, not sure of what she was talking about. No one seemed to remember such a woman being there.

Once she was in the hospital and examined, the doctors assured her that the medication hadn’t left her system yet, but just as she had heard, Jacinta was okay. Now fully recovered, she realized what had happened in her shop. The voice was lovely beyond words and the assurance had come like a warm blanket in a cold winter. The beautiful woman was no woman at all. Jacinta had met her guardian angel.

Years later, she has never had another seizure and remains a complete believer in angels. Jacinta will tell you that angels are there all the time. Pay attention!

THE BEST INSURANCE PLAN POSSIBLE!

Often, miracles are examined after people have been ill or survived struggle with a disaster. However, I have also discovered that divine protection can prevent people from facing medical emergencies or similar calamities.

One of the roles that angels have is to guard their charges. I found that everyone has a guardian angel whose job is to oversee our well-being. In contrast to ignoring angelic advice that might come through as an idea or a sudden thought, paying attention provides dividends for  our wellbeing.

You might not class some interventions as miraculous, but the people who were protected are glad to settle for calling the unexpected assistance a miracle. Here’s an example.

Brian Akerman and I were eating lunch when he shared his story. Brian is a clergyman in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches and a dynamic guy. One of his ministries is an unusual outreach to bikers. Brian’s motorcycle club cuts across all lines and has proven to be an important connection with people who might otherwise be outside the faith. With his black leather jacket covered with biker patches, he looks the part of a king of the road. However, Brian prays about everything, including his own safety.

One afternoon while returning home, Brian was zooming down the highway when a car came out of nowhere and roared straight toward him. Apparently, the driver wasn’t paying attention at the intersection and plowed into Brian, T-boning him on the left side of the motorcycle.

Brian’s Harley-Davidson went flying sideways off the pavement as the front end of the driver’s hood and bumper crumbled. In some unexplainable way, Brian was able to keep his cycle upright rather than laying down on the pavement. However, from the front tire completely along the entire side to the rear tire, the motorcycle was smashed and flattened. The collision had wiped out Brian’s vehicle. The Harley had been destroyed!

And Brian’s condition?

Not a scratch.

Brian’s leg was not injured, and no bones were broken while the motorcycle was destroyed. How can such be? Impossible, you might immediately say. Certainly, but Brian did not sustain one injury.

Brian leaned across the table and said to me, “I had a miracle!”

He certainly did. His guardian angel made the difference. The next time you get into a car, ask the angels to watch over you. Start every morning with a prayer for protection. Don’t be hesitant to ask the Lord’s hand to carry you safely through the day. Brain will tell you that such a prayer is vital.

FINDING A PATH

My interest in miracles began through a totally unexpected encounter. A friend invited me to attend a non-denominational gathering called Camp Farthest Out, a name given from the location where the movement began. The group emphasized love and healing prayer. As a college student, I certainly wasn’t into that type of expression, but was I ever in for a big surprise.

During an afternoon prayer session, I witnessed a woman healed in an eye that had been blind since she was five-years old. I was shocked, but knew I had stumbled on to some type of new encounter, experience, expression, whatever, that I couldn’t explain or understand. Students in my university would not have believed in such a thing, but I had seen the occurrence with my own eyes.

Ten years later I came down with acute Nephritis, a serious kidney disease, causing my kidneys to begin shrinking. Once shrinkage begins, at that time there was no cure except to go on dialysis (not much hope for a young man four decades ago). In another blog, I will describe the amazing experience that not only cured my illness but restored my kidneys which then was not considered possible. I had received a miracle (when I wasn’t even open to such a possibility).

When I tried to tell ministers and pastors that I had experienced a healing, most looked at me like I was still sick. The sympathetic didn’t know how to respond. Fundamentally, no one knew how to make any sense of my recovery. They just let it go.

That’s the problem. In most of today’s churches, folks don’t know what to say and let the matter drop. Pastors who don’t want to be thought of as fanatics won’t explore the subject. A high percentage of television evangelists have been discredited and clergy don’t want to go through that washing machine ringer. The subject of miracles simply hasn’t been considered in many, many places. My concern is to see this blindness healed. 

What can we learn from these two experiences that initiated my interest in miracles?

First, illness, sickness, and brokenness are an invitation for God to work. While disease and disaster often make us run for cover, these maladies are also an invitation to turn to our heavenly Father with new expectations for His touch. God works directly and indirectly. Sometimes, He uses doctors, hospitals, and surgery. On other occasions, the Lord works alone. The basic issue for us is to recover trust in Him.

Second, we need to become open to trusting Him in every situation. Regardless of how events transpire, we expect Him to accomplish His purposes. Many people never pause to recognize they are simply not open to seek a Divine intervention. Open the doors of your heart and see what follows.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Here we are looking at a new year, hoping for success, and the most profitable use of our time. My desire is for you to experience the promise of God’s highest and greatest blessings and the rest will follow.

If you haven’t considered it before, this would be a great time to reach out and ask for heaven’s touch in your own life at the point of your personal need.  Your heavenly Father wants to bestow his blessings on your life. Think about it.

I just finished reading a sociologist’s report on the state of religion in American. The predictions are dire.  The writer stated that a marked decrease in faith is coming with multitudes leaving the church. However, he overlooked an important factor that is working right now. People are increasingly discovering the miraculous power of divine intervention in their lives. Miracles can change everything.

Charlie Langer discovered this truth almost by accident. He had not been particularly interested in the idea of divine healing and certainly hadn’t pursued the idea. Charlie knew he tended to be a victim of fear, but with that mindset he became a Christian and this decision really reshaped his life.

On a Saturday morning, Charlie was reading one of the Gospels and studying the story of Jesus healing a leaper. The idea fascinated him. Charlie finished reading, had a prayer time, and prepared to leave his apartment. As he was walking out, he took a long stretching step and felt pain shoot through his body. A muscle in his right leg snapped. Charlie Langer was in trouble.

As he hobbled along, the story of the healing of the leaper came to mind and a voice seemed to say, “That can work for you right now.” Charlie thought about Jesus healing the man for several minutes and concluded that could happen to him. He prayed, “I know you can heal pain and problems like mine. Please heal me right now.”

The problem seemed to slip out of his mind. Several hours later, Charlie abruptly realized that the pain had completely disappeared. The effect was so sudden that he had almost not noticed that all the pain was gone. The Holy Spirit had brought a complete healing to his leg before he realized it.

From that time on, Charlie Langer knew that healing praying “was the real thing.”  Charlie made a decision that any way God could use him; he would be available.

Could that happen to you? Absolutely. As this new year begins, why not make a decision to reach out and receive what is promised.

WHEN YOU GET DEPRESSED

Common knowledge tells us that many people get depressed during the Christmas season. Misplaced emotions, personal loss, failures, etc. tend to pop up during the holidays when we are supposed to be happy and in a mood to celebrate. Unfortunately, many people just aren’t there. Let me offer you encouragement. Recovery of hope can be found closer than you realize.

Here’s what happened to Doris Miller (an anonymous name for personal reasons).

Doris developed suicidal depression when she was a teenager. The condition worsened and Doris became obsessed with the idea of killing herself. Fortunately, the situation never became quite right to do so. Doris concluded that in some way God was keeping her from suicide. That thought made her furious. She was becoming desperate.

One night Doris reached the breaking point. She screamed her rage at God until she finally broke down in tears. She shouted that if He wasn’t going to let her die, then her Creator had to do something about what was boiling inside of her. The anger, the bitterness, pain, and hurt had become almost unbearable. She pleaded with God that she couldn’t live with all this negativity inside her. If she had to live, then He had to help her with the pain.

Years later Doris still finds it difficult to described what happened next. She felt like she left her body and floated above herself. When Doris became aware again, the oppressiveness and pain had vanished. The weight of her negative feelings left her. Doris started to function emotionally in a normal way. Her depression was cured.

We can observe several things that happened to balance her emotions. First, she honestly faced her feelings. Although painful and frighteningly defeating, Doris got in touch with what was amiss inside her. Second, she hurled her problem before God and demanded He do something about the struggle. Another name for that response is faith. When she cried out, her heavenly Father met that need. When people throw themselves at the feet of the Father, He never fails to pick them up. While desperation can be unbearable, it can lead us to the place where deliverance is found.

If you tend to have negative feelings around this season or at any time, know that your Creator remains concerned for His creation that their days “may be merry and bright” as the song says. The Almighty waits only for us.
