READY TO DIE? GUESS WHAT?

          The most miraculous conversations always come from people who have had near-death experiences. Over the years, I have talked with many people who had such an encounter. For example, in 1987, Dawn Gillott underwent emergency surgery in an intensive care unit. She suddenly felt herself floating above her body and going down a tunnel into an open field. Sitting on a park bench, she found her grandfather who had died seven years earlier and he inquired about her family. The peace Dawn felt made her want to stay forever, but he insisted she must return for her children’s sake. Before she could complete the conversation, Dawn was back in the I.C.U. in recovery, living in this world.

            How do we understand these reports? Dr. Peter Fenwick, a British neuro-psychiatrist and graduate from the University of Cambridge, spent a life time studying these experiences. He confronted his colleagues who considered near-death events to be symptoms of anoxia, a lack of oxygen to the brain. Dr. Fenwick also challenged academics who considered these encounters as nothing more than hallucinations.

            Dr. Fenwick believed consciousness exists beyond death and studied the matter scientifically. He found 50 percent of those he studied reported traveling down a tunnel while 72 percent saw a brilliant light. In the experiences he investigated, Dr. Fenwick found 40 percent met someone they had previously known. A striking 72 percent reported making a decision to return to life and came back. These similarities cannot be accidental.

            In his book detailing his research, The Truth in the Light, he shares the conclusions he found from over 2,000 letters people sent him.

            Dr. Fenwick concluded, “Once you’ve had this experience, you are changed, whether you like it or not.” His conclusion was that the body dies, but not the individual person. When asked about his own death, the psychiatrist said, “Actually, I’m looking forward to it.”

            The miraculous may be nearer than you think! While much about the near-death experiences remains unknown, we have been given certainty about where eternal life is found. Jesus taught, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” The apostle John wrote, “this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his son. (I John 10:11)  That’s a sure promise!

Part 2

            I keep being amazed by the encounters people have with angels. Eileen Freeman’s whole life was changed by her angelic experience when she was a child. Rather than call these visitations a “miracle,” Eileen called them a “wonder.” These “wonders” have guided her life ever since. Her books Angelic Healing and Touched By Angels were written to help others discover the same dimension. You can find the same too!

            As an adult, Eileen had been diagnosed with cancer (which horrified her of course) but still she had to attend a science fiction convention. She kept blaming herself for not doing what she might have done to prevent the disease. Maybe if she had lost more weight, the cancer wouldn’t have developed. She kept blaming herself. As she sat in the lobby of the hotel, Eileen’s self-incrimination continued.

            Suddenly, Eileen realized a woman was sitting next to her. Tall and middle-aged, the woman spoke with a Caribbean accent. With a warm smile on her face, the woman said, “Do you want to talk about it?”

            “I, what, uh, up, huh?” Eileen sounded shocked.

            “You’re in some kind of trouble, dear, aren’t you?” The woman began to explain that she noticed Eileen seemed to be in a struggle. She suggested they have some tea and talk about the problem. “Mint tea please,” she told the server.

            “Hmm, my favorite,” Eileen thought.

            The woman immediately explained that Eileen must trust God. If Eileen asked for help, she would find it. She must stop blaming herself because she didn’t create the problem. Stop being afraid because fear only delays healing. The woman quoted a biblical verse, “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who reverence him and delivers them.” With that the woman explained she had to leave.

            Eileen realized she hadn’t even asked the woman’s name and how could she have known so much about her? Remembering she needed to pay for the tea, Eileen called for the waitress. “I didn’t notice anyone sitting with you,” the waitress explained. “No, no one was with you. Oh, and the management said the tea is on the house.”

            Without any seeming knowledge of Eileen’s sickness, the woman had offered a message from God. No one else had seen her sitting with Eileen. The woman’s message proved to be amazingly helpful in curing Eileen’s illness. Later when a group picture was taken of people attending the conference, the woman wasn’t in the photo. She had just vanished. A wonder indeed!

            In these perilous times, everyone needs someone to show up and give us encouragement. How about having an angel in a human suit sit down beside you? Possible? Certainly is! Keep your eyes open. You never know who might show up.

An Angel told her this…

            Beck Hobbs kept having premonitions of a bad car wreck. Around Christmas time, her worried increased that some disaster might be ahead. She would even wake up in the dreaming of  the impending crash, but nothing happened and she blew the worry off.

            Becky’s birthday was January 24 and she was thinking about that celebration when it felt like somebody was tugging on her sleeve. The pull felt like she was being directed to leave the house and stand in the front yard. At 3:00 in the morning that didn’t seem like a good idea but she gave in.

            Standing there looking at the sky, she cried out, “What do you want me to know?” A booming physical voice answered, “Be careful, this may be your last birthday.”

            Even though the voice was commanding, for some reason this sudden call didn’t frighten her. She sensed the voice meant to help her. However, that one sentence of warning was all she heard.

            The next day, Becky left for Alabama to play for a police benefit. After the concert she loaded up her equipment, got in the van and the driver took off. They had just come to an inter-section when she looked up and saw an eighteen-wheeler van barreling down on her.

            “God help us!” she cried. “He’s not going to stop!” She cried for the driver to stop. Becky remembered that voice in the night and screamed, “Hit the brakes!” The driver of the eighteen-wheeler came sliding into Becky’s vehicle. The collision sent Becky’s van spinning, but they were alive.

            The police investigating the accident said, “A split second saved your life. One more second and you’d all been killed.”

            At that moment, Becky remembered the voice in the night and realized who it was. An angel had spoken and prepared her to be ready for the accident. The voice was her guardian angel. After reflecting, Becky felt she had a goal to help others learn to listen to the voice of their angel.

            In communicating with people like Becky, I’ve learned that often we have an unexpected thought, a nudge, an idea that comes out of nowhere and that might possibly be our guardian angel directing us. At such moments, we can stop and pray, “Are you there? Can you speak to me? What do you have to tell me?” You might be surprised by what you discover.

            Remember miracles never cease.

SHE DIDN’T BELIEVE UNTIL …

            Context can certainly make the difference. Many, many people have no expectation that God cares. Once they cross that line, often even to their surprise, things happen. Let’s add another element. Sometimes divine interventions take time. We must remember that no response is a divine delay for reasons that often we cannot grasp. Don’t doubt when you have to wait. Cassaundra Siegersma’s experience is an example.

            Cassundra had grown up with some erroneous ideas about how the Holy Spirit intervenes. Having been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, she struggled with sleep apnea, asthma, and fibromyalgia. If that wasn’t enough, two herniated disks resulted in two back surgeries. These problems caused her to sleep all day and not at night. Trying to make ends meet, her husband worked three jobs to pay for Cassandra’s problems, but bankruptcy loomed before them.

            Needing a break, Cassandra accepted an invitation to attend a spiritual conference in Colorado Springs. She came with some hesitancy about the speaker but quickly recognized that the teacher basically quoted the Bible. Cassandra couldn’t argue with that! Since scripture was true, what she was hearing had to be true. Finally, Cassandra went forward to have intercessors pray over her problems.

            She returned to the hotel room and made a definite decision to trust that the Holy Spirit had done something definite in her life. Cassandra would believe regardless of what followed.

Two weeks later her resolution proved true.

            As she was trying to sleep, Cassandra felt a sensation on her toes. She thought her husband probably wanted her to take him to work but when she looked no one was there. She had received a touch from God. Cassandra knew the sensation was real. Within five minutes she was asleep better than she had in years.

            When she awoke, Cassandra knew she was in a new place. She had received a gift and believed God wants everyone to have the same. Today Cassandra proclaims no matter what the problem might be, the Cross is the answer. What happened on the Cross is bigger than any problem we could ever have.

            Today she declares, “Let God be your refuge and your fortress, your delivery, and a very present help in time of need. He will meet you wherever you are.”

            Cassandra lives in this context. You might pause and give some thought about the context that surrounds you. One of anticipating God to act on your behalf? One of expectancy? Sometimes you have to wait? No problem. Cassandra will tell you about the difference your expectations can make. Faith opens to door  to the Divine context.

THE CRASH LEFT NO HOPE UNTIL

            “Mrs. Black?” the voice on the phone said. “Yes.”

            “This is St. Joseph’s hospital in Burbank. I’m sorry to tell there’s been an airplane crash. One man was killed and there are only two survivors in critical condition. One of them is your son.”

            She listened in stunned silence. This can’t be happening!

            Dale Black had gone down. As a pilot, he had flown all over the country.  Now he lay unconscious on a hospital bed with his life slipping away. The tragic seemed inconceivable but Dale Black appeared to be at the end of his life.

            But where was he?

            In the story of his life, Dale Black’s book Flight to Heaven (Bethany House Publishers) tells the astonishing story of what happened to him in that hospital room. As the trauma team worked feverishly, Dale felt detached and then realized he was floating up to the ceiling where he could look down on what was happening below him.  Leaving his mangled body behind, memories flooded in. Dale remembered as a boy at a summer church camp he had asked Jesus Christ to be his Lord and Savior then as that memory faded, he flew away from the hospital room, leaving his body behind. Two angels were alongside. Then he realized that he was approaching a magnificent city filled with wonderful light. Dale intuitively knew he belonged in this place of overpowering beauty. Wonderful colors of all shades danced in the air. Iridescent grass overflowed with beautiful flowers. The glow and energy of a brilliant light danced in all directions and yet, Dale could look at the light without hurting his eyes. Glorious music filled the air while millions of people moved in the light and swayed to the music.  The sound was a combination of singing and instruments in a wonderous blend of harmony and cooperation. Worship of God was the heart and focus of the music. Intuitively, he knew Jesus, the Word, held it all together.

            Never had Dale Black felt such overwhelming peace.

            In the following weeks after returning to his body, Dale heard the doctors predict he would never fly again. Believing in the promise in the book of James, Dale called for the elders to pray over him and his condition. The recovery and rehabilitation were not easy, but his faith and the vision of what he seen carried Dale forward. Dale knew he’d been to heaven and come back. He would fly again … now … and finally then.

SHE STRUGGLED IN MISERY UNTIL…

            People don’t realize the power that awaits at their fingertips. The truth is that each one of us has the capacity to be a conduit of grace and healing. When scripture talks about “laying on of hands,” the description can be compared to inserting a plug in a light socket. Power is conveyed through the cord. In a similar way, prayer can heal when praying people touch the person in need.

            Melanie Davis made this discovery when she was struggling with severe allergies. Whether the irritant was dust, weeds, dogs, dander or you name it, Melanie could not escape the painful impact of these irritants. Even though, she regularly took medicine and antihistamines, Melanie had great difficulty in breathing and sleeping. Her problem became overwhelming during the Spring.

            The whites of Melanie’s eyes would become so swollen that they covered part of the pupils in her eyes. Her days were spent drifting in a hazy fog and struggling to breathe. In despair, Melanie felt nothing would ever change.

            With her box of tissues, Melanie Davis went to one of Andrew Womack’s Bible Conferences. She listened carefully to stories about people being healed. The speaker began to describe someone in the room struggling with breathing problems and seasonal allergies. If that was the case, that person should stand.

            Melanie felt an invisible arm lifting her to her feet. Immediately the teacher asked the people surrounding her to gather around and put their hands on Melanie and prayed. Melanie immediately felt warmth filling her body. The intercessors kept praying with their hands on her shoulders. Melanie’s eyes stayed firmly closed while she hoped for the best.

            As the prayers subsided, Melanie’s eyes popped open. She could see everything in the room and her eyes didn’t itch. She was stunned and started crying. The stubborn problem had evaporated. She was healed.

            Later riding her bike in the same area where she had previously struggled, Melanie realized she could walk through a weed-filled field with no problems. She has not struggled since.

            Before, Melanie thought God was real. Now she knew so. Why? Because people laid on hands and prayed. You are no different. Just remember that your prayers are not words floating up to somewhere, but a connection to the divine, conveying empowerment. It happens every day.

            Noticing the role that courage and integrity can play in the miraculous, I turned to studying one of the heroic men of the 20th century, Diedrich Bonhoeffer. MIRACLES FROM LONG AGO

Several decades ago, I became interested in how life in the first three centuries actually functioned.  I had a hunch that the miraculous dimension continued on from the time of the Apostles much has it is described in the New Testament. While there are important and distinctive differences between those early centuries and today, I wondered if the spiritual dynamic had really changed with time from then until now. In addition, I realized that few Christian groups had an honest understanding and insight into where the church came from and how it developed. They all claimed to be the original church and that couldn’t be true. What I found in studying the first centuries turned out to be insightful and fascinating.

I’ve put many of those discoveries in my latest book. If you’ll forgive me, I’m about to present a commercial for you. MAN ON FIRE is the story of the last disciple of the Apostle John. While today’s church knows little or nothing about Polycarp, he was the first father of the emerging church, a man of brilliant faith, and a major figure in defeating the first heresy that confronted Christians at the end of the first century. Polycarp struggled with the same issues we do in understanding how the miraculous dimension intersects with the everyday world. I think you would find this story to be important.

Contrary to contemporary claims. The first church in Rome was nearly destroyed when both Peter and Paul were executed by the Romans. For decades, these early Christians lived in fear of being captured and persecuted in a similar manner. The church was not organized and floundered under well-meaning but unskilled leadership. When Polycarp appeared on the scene, he began bringing order to the disorganized believers while avoiding the Roman soldiers who were constantly seeking Christians that could be arrested.

I won’t give a ay the ending, but Polycarp’s last days became a witness that rings through the ages. Martyrs facing death often remembered and repeated his words. You’ll be inspired by the same affirmation.

Usually, these blogs feature the experience of someone in today’s world that could be your neighbor. However, miracle stories speak through every century and sometimes the events of the more distant past are just as inspiring as contemporary experience. I believe you’ll find this to be so in the life of Polycarp.
