SILENCE BECAME SOUND

Lee Strobel writes in The Case For Miracles about miraculous events that changed his mind from skepticism to faith. These stories were picked up from his experience and journeys. Here is another one of those events that created a new hope for Lee Strobel.

A well credentialed physician, Dr. R.F.R. Gardner had the opportunity to review the medical evidence both before and after the miracle occurred. This is unusual since circumstances don’t usually produce the same occasion for confirmation. However, the medical records for the nine-year-old British girl diagnosed her with untreatable lateral sensorineutral deafness.  (For personal reasons we will only call her Annie.)

Once diagnosed, Annie was fitted with hearing aids that helped her to a limited degree. However, Annie didn’t want to wear these devices all of her life. She went on a crusade to ask friends to intercede for her. Annie constantly prayed for herself and her parents joined in.  She was soon surrounded by intercessors.

“I kept feeling God was telling me to pray especially for healing,” Annie said.  “Passages kept coming to me.” She read in the Bible, “If you have the faith of a child … if one among you is ill lay on hands… And you shall receive …. Your faith has made you whole.” These scriptural verses encouraged Annie not to give up and keep praying

Unfortunately, Annie’s hearing aids were damaged at school. She had no other recourse but to return to the audiologists. She was examined and the devices refitted. Satisfied with the adjustment, she went home.

The following morning when Annie awoke, she knew something was different. Suddenly, she realized she could hear. Jumping out of bed, she rushed down stairs to tell her parents. Bounding down the stairs, she cried out, “Mummy, I can hear!”

The mother called the audiologists. “I don’t believe you,” he said dogmatically. “It’s impossible.” Finally, he hesitantly acknowledged it would take a miracle to restore hearing and wanted another audiogram done immediately.

To the astonishment of everyone, Annie could not only hear words and sounds, but whispers.  The audiologist concluded “I have no explanation for this. I have never seen anyting like it in my life.”

What happened? The medical profession had no answer. Annie did. People prayed. She constantly interceded and believed in biblical passages.

Can it still happen? It does everyday.

A SNAKE IN THE BUSHES

Lee Strobel writes in The Case For Miracles about a situation in Africa where Dr. Craig Keener’s wife’s sister had been attacked by a poisonous snake. For years he heard strange stories about Therese Magnouha. Had she been dead? Revived? What happened? When Dr. Keener flew to Congo-Brazzaveille, he discovered the whole story.

After returning through the jungle from helping a neighbor with food, Therese’s mother found the child crying. The marks on the child demonstrated the frightening fact.  A deadly snake had indeed struck the child. The mother grabbed the child and ran for help. With no clinic or doctors, she carried the child over the mountains, running as fast as she could.

But the child stopped breathing. The mother found a family friend and together they calculated that the child had not taken a breath in more than three hours. The two women knew there was no medical assistance or help to be found. All they could do was pray. Crying out with fervent intercession, they prayed to Jesus, over and over again.

Therese began breathing.

Dr. Keener discovered another amazing result. The child suffered no ill effects.  Dr Keener knew that brain damage begins only six minutes without oxygen.

The next day there were no lingering medical problems. Years later Therese Magnouha completed a graduate seminary degree. No brain damage or other problems developed. The doctor discovered the family had not been part of any emotionally exuberant church – just a mainline Protestant denomination. The doctor concluded that no matter what anyone said or thought, the child recovered after the prayer began.

Dr. Craig Keener had once held a highly-skeptical outlook. This and other similar situations blindsided him. He said, “With respect to my worldview, I had the chair pulled out from beneath me.”

The mother’s prayer revealed a far superior perspective.

AN ANGEL?

Stories of angelic appearances have always intrigued me. Many authorities believe that we are given a guardian angel at birth. I also have found the stories of unexpected appearances to be fascinating. Catherine Flore of Tom River, New Jersey had such an experience. Her story offers insight.

Catherine’s brother Frank had always been an important part of her life.  Her daughter Lisa had a special place in her heart for Her Uncle Frank. He was always there when help was needed, making the difference. Suddenly, everything fell apart. Frank died far too  early for his age. Catherine and the family were devastated.  She kept praying for a sign, any sort of sign that Frank was still okay and maybe still with them in some way. Catherine’s prayers for Frank’s well-being were constant.

Not long after Frank’s death, Catherine’s grand-daughter Samantha left on a trip with other relatives. Somewhere out on the highway their car was hit head-on. While no one was killed, Samantha was rushed to the hospital. While the driver was able to get out of the car, Samantha was blended between the seats, bleeding and drifting in and out of consciousness.  They didn’t know what to do.

At that moment, a man showed up and urged them not to move her. He insisted that a paramedic was on the way. No one remembered calling for an ambulance, but quickly the sirens signaled one was about there. Immediately, the paramedics began helping little Samantha. Shortly, they had her out of the tangled wreckage and in the back of the ambulance.

The surviving family went back to the man’s car to thank him for being with them and all he had done. But there was no car. No tracks. The man had appeared and then disappeared.  The unknown man had vanished!

At the hospital, Catherine found Samantha battered, but surviving.  Catherine leaned over the child’s bed and ask if she remembered what this man who helped her looked like. Samantha described someone who looked just like Uncle Frank. Catherine gasped. “Always there when help was needed.”

Was that man who suddenly disappeared Frank? A Guardian Angel? Gives you something to think about.

 A HEALING DREAM

Divine interventions often come through dreams. The Bible is filled with these stories, running from Jacob’s ladder to heaven to Joseph’s instruction to take Mary and baby Jesus to Egypt.  Our next-door neighbors had such an experience involving their son Garrett.

Garrett Conley was born with a serious heart defect that meant his life would always be limited.  Many difficult, painful surgeries were required just to survive. Even though the family knew his life span could be short, his mother, father, and I began praying for his condition on a weekly basis. Garett was energized by these laying on of hands sessions and grew taller and stronger. By age eighteen, he was looking to a future that would be tough.

And then Garett’s heart suddenly failed and on November 2, 2020 he slipped away.

His mother was overwhelmed and devastated. A devout Christian, Carrie struggled to understand.  She prayed constantly to grasp what had occurred. That’s when the dream came in the night.

Carrie and her husband Wiley were carrying baby Garett across a long bridge. As they walked, the baby started to grow but they kept holding him. The journey across the span was long and the baby kept growing. Even though a a teenager, Carrie and Wiley still held him as they walked. Slowly but surely, Garett became an eighteen-year-old young man while his mother and father were still holding him.

When Carrie looked ahead, she could see another bridge that had to be crossed. This time the bridge was torn, rugged, and broken. Crossing the next bridge would be far more difficult than the one they were on. Carrie wasn’t sure how they would get across.

Suddenly Jesus appeared at the end of the bridge they had been crossing and reached out to take Garret in his arms.  With a sweeping gesture, Jesus and Garett were gone. Carrie abruptly realized that because of his love for Garett, the Master had saved him from crossing a broken bridge. The insight proved to be a powerful healing for Carrie’s grief.

Carrie’s dream demonstrates how healing can come even when we are asleep. Sometimes the interventions of God come when our eyes are closed.

 HEALING POWER

I didn’t grow up in a world where people took angels seriously. They were considered more of a figure of speech, an interesting idea, something akin to fairies. During the past several years, I have been with people who shared their experience of angels. My perception has definitely changed. I have discovered that the Bible’s description of the angelic realm turns out to be amazingly true and helpful.

Here’s an example. Kim Kosteczko of Gardiner, New York  offers insight.

Kim and her mother had always believed in angels.  The challenge came when Kim received a telephone call from a neighbor saying that her mother had fallen and had a serious injury. She rushed home and found a package at the door. Kim set the parcel aside and hurried to her mother’s side.  At the hospital, x-rays were taken that revealed the worst. Her arm had been broken in two places and needed immediately surgery. But there was another problem.

Kim’s mother could not survive surgery. With a fragile heart and lungs, she wouldn’t make it. The doctor’s only alternative was a traction brace. The best he could offer was the hope that fusion would occur. The doctor felt certain that she would have to wear a brace for the rest of her life. Not much encouragement there. Kim’s mother was deeply depressed.

Kim prayed for divine intervention and ask for the angels to help. She encouraged her mother not to lose hope because Kim assured her the angels would help.

When Kim returned home, she saw the package that had been left on the porch.  Inside she was surprised to find three angels labelled Faith, Hope, and Love. A small pillow had been embroidered with, Friends Are Angels Without Wings. Kim took the angels to the hospital for her mother’s reassurance. She took a picture of her Mom holding the angels. To her surprise, the picture turned out to be more than she expected.

When it was developed, Kim’s mother was covered with white transparent light. She knew the picture was a sign of the angels covering her with healing grace. Seeing the angels caused her mother’s depression to lift.

Six-weeks later when they went for an appointment, the doctor was shocked. Her mother’s arm was completely healed!

SAVED FROM THE UNEXPECTED

This past week has been a disaster. Oklahoma had the coldest weather in its history. The wind chill Tuesday was a -25 with 15 inches of snow! We couldn’t get out of the house and prayed the pipes wouldn’t freeze, but today we’re on the other side. While glancing at L.W. Northup’s Encounter with Angels, I am reminded how we are often delivered from the unexpected. Here’s one of his stories.

Mutuko Hasgawa was touched by the ministry of an American Missionary to Japan. Her father was the mayor of Hiroshima. She had three daughters and life seemed good. Then, World War II struck and her husband went to the front fighting for the Emperor. Tragically, he lost his life at the front.

The day of his death, Mutuko’s first thought was to commit suicide. As she contemplated death, she heard the voice of God clearly say to her. “Can’t you raise these girls to be missionaries for me?” Totally unexpected, she had experienced a divine intervention.

Mutuko returned to her city and went to work for her sister-in-law who was a doctor.  As the days passed, it became clear that Japan was losing the war. The word on the streets was that Japan would make a final stand to defend their island. People were terrified. Conditions of destruction were closing in around them. She wasn’t sure of what to do.

And then that voice returned.

She was sure Divinity was speaking. “Escape to the mountains!” Over and over, she heard the same message. The angels seemed to be saying, “Escape to the mountains!”

Finally, Mutako obeyed. In an old truck, she gathered what belongings she could take, gathered up her children, and drove up into the towering mountains behind the city. At 8:16 the next morning, she looked down on her city and saw a blinding flash of light. A mushroom cloud engulfed Hiroshima. The atomic bomb had wiped out the entire city. She and her children were saved.

Mutako Hasgawa knew that angels saved her and her three daughters for a greater purpose. Her obedience had been crucial.

Our problem has been ice not fire, but listening to God and angels remains vital everywhere.

A FRIEND IN NEED

I am always amazed by the stories I run into that describe the unexpected appearances of the Unexpected. Over the past few years, I shared some of these accounts that happen in all kinds of places including winter blizzards. Right now we are preparing for a “whopper” starting tomorrow and dumping maybe as much as two feet of snow. That makes this a good time to remember what is possible when the cold winds blow in.

Jacinta Williams of Stuart, Florida has just such a story for us.

When an unexpected seizure hit her, Jacinta was terrified. With no history of epilepsy or any similar disorder, she was diagnosed with having a reaction to a prescription. However, while working on her job as a hair stylist, another attack knocked her on the floor still holding a bottle of hair color in her hand. Blackness swallowed her. Only slowly did she begin to return to consciousness.

Jacinta could hear muffled voices flowing around her. While she was struggling to regain full awareness she could hear more voices above her. Slowly, she began to realize that someone was holding her hand. When Jacinta opened her eyes, she saw a beautiful, smiling woman with long blonde hair and sparkling eyes. Jacinta guessed the woman must be around thirty-years-old.

As the woman looked into Jacinta’s eyes, she didn’t say a word. And yet — Jacinta clearly heard her say, “Do not be afraid. Soon you will be well.”

An ambulance arrived and the paramedics started preparing her for the ride to the hospital. She looked at them and her co-workers. “Where’s the beautiful lady who held my hand.” They shook their heads, not sure of what she was talking about. No one seemed to remember such a woman being there.

Once she was in the hospital and examined, the doctors assured her that the medication hadn’t left her system yet. Just as she had heard, Jacinta was okay. Now fully recovered, she realized what had happened in her shop. The voice was lovely beyond words and the assurance had come like a warm blanket in a cold winter. The beautiful woman was no woman at all. Jacinta had met her guardian angel.

Years later, she never had another seizure and remains a complete believer. Jacinta will tell you that angels are there all the time. Pay attention!

A STOP BY AN EMPTY WATER WELL

I’ve known Chuck and Janet Pohlhammer for maybe two millennium. We became friends when I lived in the Laguna Beach area a number of decades ago. Since then, Chuck and I have exchanged jokes, stories, and political commentary over the telephone. A number of them have become classics. The Pohlhammer’s have year after year made monthly trips down to Baja California to assist in poverty-stricken missions that take in orphan children. Janet is a nurse and can provide medical help.  She tolerates our jokes and gags.

This past week Chuck called with a different experience.

They had crossed the border into Baja California and gone down to Rancho Sordo Mudo to help this facility that takes in children who are mute. The ministry is a vital ministry to children and people who are in desperate need. When they arrived, the Pohlhammer’s discovered staff and children walking around an old water well in despair. Wringing their hands, no one seemed to know what to do.

The well (which was the only water supply for the entire Rancho) had gone dry. One of the men had been lowered into the hole with a shovel to see if he could open up the flow of water at the bottom. Unfortunately, not even a trickle appeared. Of course, the loose dirt was hoisted up in a bucket. Someone or something slipped and the container as well as the large load of dirt and rock had crashed on top of the worker.

Of course, getting the damaged man up from the bottom of the hole was a challenging problem. Fortunately, that was a solvable issue even with his injuries, but getting water flowing back into the well was paramount. In a proverty area, the problem had no solution. The ministry to the children was doomed.

The Pohlhammer’s watched as the staff lamented, prayed, and bemoaned their fate. Abruptly, a large truck came lumbering up the dirt road. The driver pulled up, and got out of the truck.

“I don’t know why I’m here,” he said. “I was driving up the highway when this strange presence seemed to come over me. Never happened before. Strangest thing I ever felt. Seemed like I was being told to turn up that next dirt road. So, I did and it led me here.”

The crowd listened intently.

“I’m sorry,” the man said. “I don’t have anything to offer. All I’ve got in my truck is a water well drilling rig.”

Little things can mean a lot.
