THE MOTORCYCLE EXPLODED AND …

This past week I was holding a Night of Empowerment event where hurting people discover the power of the Holy Spirit to set them free from their struggles. The service at The Church had been exceptionally powerful. I was hurrying away to make another appointment when Johnny Brooks stopped me in the hall.

“Got something you might want to hear,” Johnny said. “I nearly died.”

I immediately stopped and wanted to hear his story. Johnny was part of a motorcycle ministry of The Church (formerly Act Church) called The Priesthood. Along with other groups they drove the highways and enjoyed the relationships. Johnny Brooks was cruising through Claremore, Oklahoma close to the Hard Rock Casiono when a truck with a trailer swung onto the highway and didn’t see him. Johnny clipped the rear of the trailer and went flying. Laying on the ground, Johnny knew he was dying and could barely mutter, “Tell my wife Nicole that I love her.”

The wreck ruptured his aorta that runs into the heart. As the doctors at Tulsa’s St. Francis hospital frantically worked on him, Johnny lost 45 pints of blood. They told his wife no one has ever survived such a loss.

And where was Johnny?

He was laying in a large field. A man in a robe with shoulder-length hair was standing behind and above him. He couldn’t see the man’s face but wanted to do so. He could feel the man’s touch on his shoulder and wondered if he was Jesus. (Later he believed the figure was Jesus) Johnny remembered thousands of people standing around the field watching what was happening.  Suddenly, Johnny’s wife was there crying and saying, “Don’t give up!”

That night Johnny’s step-daughter Destiny Reed had a dream. The next morning, she told her mother. “I dreamed Daddy was in a field and there was a glowing light surrounding him.”

And those thousands of people watching the field? Later Johnny learned that friends in motorcycle clubs all over America were praying for him. One of the clubs felt a divine intervention was at work as they prayed.

Five times the physicians told the family that Johnny Brooks wouldn’t make it. He did.

Finally, one of the doctors told his wife that it was a miracle that he had survived. Her response? She said, “Johnny was touched by Jesus. That’s all there was to it.”

Do miracles continue to happen today? Ask Johnny Brooks. He’ll tell you they most certainly do.

DELIVER US FROM EVIL

One of the persistent themes that stretches back to the beginning of time is a question about the existence of evil. Is it evil or Evil?  Are these assaults personal or products of chance. Surely, we cannot miss the fact that our world is immersed in a struggle with destruction. From the Sudan to Ukraine, everywhere we look we see tragic death. Guns are assaulting our schools and as in addition leaving innocent Blacks killed by police as well as panicked citizens who supposedly accidently killing someone on the front porch. The number one cause of death of children in America is shootings.

Can you avoid having to face the reality of evil or Evil?

Let’s put this question on a personal level. Could you be assaulted by evil in terms of sickness, depression, or some form of psychological distress? It’s possible. And if so, you need to know about how the miraculous can deliver you from the consequences.

This past week one of my Spiritual Directors called me with her experience. A Spiritual Director is trained to help people recognize how they can grow in faith and maturity. Betty Smith offered healing services.  (Names are changed for anonymity sake)

Betty called me about a man with a painful physical struggle that he couldn’t identify. Barely speaking more than a mumble, George wasn’t sure how to even describe what was wrong… he just hurt. Betty was working with him through a Zoom computer system because he was halfway across the country.

Betty has always been extraordinarily perceptive. She began to sense a strange shade under George’s chin. The more Betty looked, the more certain she was that a dark entity had settled in just beneath George’s heart. Betty suspected that something evil had entered into this man’s body.

When Betty inquired about his personal history, she learned that several generations back his family had been involved in a cult like experience when people were offered as a sacrifice to Evil. The result of that encounter had never left the family. George was now the final result. Evil lingered in his body.

As usual, Betty asked the angelic hosts to help her set George free. As they prayed for a specific release, George could feel evil being pulled out of his body. His demeanor changed and he became more talkative. George now felt great.

We need to stay balanced on this subject. However, we must also be realistic. Evil exists out there and can attach itself to a person. Don’t worry. One of the aspects of Divine intervention is that the power of the Holy Spirit will set you free. Don’t worry; just be aware.

AND LOOK AT WHAT HAPPENED WHEN…

While the meaning of Easter still lingers in our thoughts, I am reminded of how the Resurrection of Jesus the Christ continues to guide our personal battles with death and illness.  A blow was struck against sickness and deterioration. Sure, the battle with human infirmity is not over, but the miraculous interventions of our heavenly Father continue to guide us in our time of need.  Here are two examples that I recently found in my files. When people have received a touch of Grace, they often write me. Here are two expressions of divine intervention. (Names are anonymous for privacy sake)

Paula’s trip to the doctor about her abdominal pain resulted in Gall Bladder surgery. After the surgery, the pain continued. Paula heard about the “Jesus Prayer.”  Taken from the Gospels, (Matthew 20:31), the prayer of two blind men brought the restoration of their sight. “Lord Jesus, Son of  David have mercy on us,” or “Lord Jesus, Son of God have mercy on me,” is repeated over and over in a prayerful mantra seeking healing.

The discovery of the earliest Church was that repetition helped the mind, the emotions, and the physical body come together and focus on coming into a relationship with the Holy Spirit. We are lifted out of the distractions of this world and brought into the realm of inspiration. The Jesus prayer is often prayed  over and over for a long time.

Paula discovered the prayer helped her breathe more deeply and speeded up the healing process. However, during the hospital stay an x-ray showed an abnormality with Paula’s heart. She kept praying the Jesus Prayer. The next x-ray revealed the abnormality was gone. Paula was released early. Like the two blind men, she knew the hand of God had reached into her body and made whole.

Struggling with throbbing agony, George had been rushed to the emergency room at St. Anthony’s hospital, Oklahoma City. Sever stomach pains had doubled him up. The cramping turned into a real struggle. A friend showed up and began praying for the condition. Within five minutes, the nightmare was over. The excruciating discomfort disappeared. Surprisingly enough, George discovered that his habit of smoking cigarettes was also gone and he hasn’t smoked since. All because of a friend’s prayer.

We might conclude that Easter happened again in a hospital.  Is the Holy Spirit still working in our world?  You bet your boots. Just remember miracles never cease!

AND A MIRACLE HEALED…Easter celebrates the greatest miracle of all existence. The Resurrection of Jesus the Christ was the final defeat of death and Evil. Two- thousand years later, we continue to bow humbly before this hallmark event in human history. A blow was struck against sickness and deterioration. Sure, the battle with human infirmity is not over, but like the D-Day landing on Normandy Beach, we are in the final struggle.

Dana Taylor can verify that fact.

Dana developed a problem of abnormal bleeding and went straight to the doctor. He assured her that she was not pregnant, gave her some pills, and sent her home. However, Dana suspected that the hormones and pills only masked the real problem. During a church service, Dana prayed, “Lord, if I brought this on myself, could you please show me how?” Immediately an answer popped in her mind. She had refused to let herself become pregnant again. In fact, negating the possibility had become somewhat of an obsession with her and she was making herself sick. Dana immediately released the obsession into God’s care. However, she suspected the real physical problem lingered.

And the problem did return with the doctor suggesting a surgical procedure that Dana didn’t want. She called a friend who agreed to pray with her for the next four days. Laying down, Dana placed her hands on her abdomen and began to pray. Immediately her hands became hot and she kept praying that Jesus would heal her condition. For three days, Dana followed the same pattern and kept seeking a miraculous healing.

On the fourth day, as she was praying Dana felt a surge of energy like an electrical wave shooting through her body from her head to her toes, leaving her with a tingling sensation. Three times this empowerment charged through her body. The force completely overwhelmed her.

Finally, Dana prayed, “Lord I don’t think I can take this anymore. Please let me sleep.” She drifted away. When she awoke the next morning, Dana was healed. She was fine.

Dana has always been a firm believer in the Christian faith and the Resurrection. In her hour of need, she experienced the promise of the power of life over death, wellness over illness. Does the power of the Resurrection still extend to us? Dana would enthusiastically say “Yes!”

As you reflect on Easter … just remember miracles never cease!

BUT WHEN SHE STARTED TO WRITE

Decades ago, I knew a Dutch woman who worked with clocks. Beginning her work in Haarlem, Holland before WWII, the woman was unique in her trade. Little did I know that Corrie ten Boom would become famous across the world through the story of The Hiding Place and her helping Jews escape the Nazis. I just knew she was a devout believer who clung to her faith. And then I met another woman clockmaker who was exactly the same.

Rose Michael ran Clocks, an intriguing shop with clocks of all sizes as well as repairing the ailing timepieces from giant uprights to antique ornaments. When my two cuckoo clocks I bought in Europe stopped, I needed her touch. During our conversation, I learned Rose was an author. In addition to a children’s book, she wrote The Secret Place.

Corrie had The Hiding Place; Rose had The Secret Place!

As we talked, I discovered Rose had produced this book in a most unusual way. After starting each day with prayer time, she let her mind go into neutral and asked the Holy Spirit to lead, allowing  the “flow” to produce a gripping story about eternity. Following the Psalmist phrase “the secret place of the Highest,” Rose took a journey into eternity. Page after page produced an amalgamation of the guidelines of scripture with a path into God’s design for eternity. In her book, Rose also included the witness of friends who had walked through tragedy and turned the darkest winter days into a springtime of joy. You will be moved by their stories of the conquest of tragedy.

Whether you accept Rose’s story as literal or an allegory, the words reveal the promise of God for His people. A blessing indeed!

Now, here’s the idea that gripped me. How did the original authors write the Gospels? Of course, they were eyewitnesses, but did they have guidance like Rose did? The list of gifts of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament is not exhaustive. With time other expressions of the leading of the Holy Spirit have come through bringing inspiration. Writing a Spirit-led story is surely one of them.

Whether we would call such writing miraculous or not, it is a door we can all walk through. You pray: ask the Holy Spirit’s guidance: and then write what comes to mind. You might be surprised by what you could discover.

Remember miracles never cease!

NOTHING STOPPED THE DISASTER WHEN…

Some miracles cannot be measured by a single event, but must be understood in the context of history. Such is true of Israel.  No nation that was wiped out has ever returned except one; Israel. Fulfilling the prophecy of scripture written over 2,000 years earlier, the Jewish people returned to their promised land. Passages such as Jeremiah 31, Jeremiah 16, and Ezekiel 36 fore saw the Jewish people returning. International politician’s like General George Marshall warned the Jews not to establish a state because the surrounding 8 Arab states would wipe them out. On a Friday, David Ben-Gurion declared Israel a nation. On Monday, swarms of Arabs attacked and lost. How could a tiny, struggling people withstand such an onslaught? Only by a miracle.

Israel has always been a land of miracles. For 2,000 years Jewish families continued to live in the Galilee even after the fall of the Second Temple. In 1900, the Greenberg family returned around the turn of the century and had great success in farming in the Galilee, but in 1915 disaster hit. An overwhelming swarm of locust struck, devouring everything in sight, including all their crops and vegetables!

Farmers rushed into the fields swinging clubs. Children were released from school to help kill the destroyers, but nothing stopped the insects onslaught. The locusts were devouring the fruits and vegetables with the force of a rampaging wild fire.

The Jewish farmers prayed around the supper table and went to bed, hoping to have the energy to attack the locust in the morning. Again, they prayed and prayed and prayed.

In the morning, just as the sun ca me up, one of the farmers looked out the window. The fields were covered with white! He rushed out to see what this meant.

Thousands of white storks had flown in during the night! So many had landed on the locust that the land looked solid white. Out of nowhere, storks had saved the crops. For three days, the huge white birds ate the locust and then left, not to return.

For the next three years, the crops in the Galilee flourished as never before. To this day, the Jews call the event “The Miracle of the Storks.”

When God works miracles, sometimes you see His hand move, sometimes you don’t.  You may need to just keep on looking.

Do miracles still happen? Ask the Jews of Israel. Just remember miracles never cease!

MIRACLE ON THE BATTLEFIELD

One of the ways to understand miracles is to recognize that they are a reflection of the purposes and promises of God. All the promises of God are yes and “so-be-it.” They stand forever even if it takes a millennium to fulfill. Today the nation of Israel is an enduring example of that fact.

In Israel’s 1967 Yom Kippur War, the Israelis were completely caught off-guard. The Syrian Army came pouring in from the Golan Heights and completely outnumbered the Israels. The battle proved to be ugly and bloody. The situation appeared to be fatal for Israel. If the enemy tanks prevailed, the Jews would be driven into the ocean. Only a handful of Israeli military tanks stood against a multitude of Syrian armor ready to wipe them out.

David Yamean called on the armored tanks around him to withstand the onslaught. As commander of the Unit, he called for them to charge. Almost no one moved. They knew it would be suicide.  Nevertheless, Commander Yamean charged forward with only a few following him.  Remembering Auschwitz and the death camps, they would die before surrendering. The small unit of tanks prepared to fight to the finish. As the treads of the wheels rumbled forward, they prayed.

For absolutely no military reason, the Syrian tanks stopped. After a pause, they turned and retreated. David Yamean and the few tanks around him halted, they opened their hatches and couldn’t believe their eyes. The obvious defeat had turned into a stunning victory.

What happened?

At 3:00 in the night Washington, D.C. time, Golda Meier called President Richard Nixon, work him up, and told him the Jewish people were about to be wiped out unless America responded.

Years before Nixon’s mother had told Richard that the Jewish people had a special place in God’s plan for the world. He should always be mindful of them. He was.

Nixon immediately called the Pentagon and told them to prepare to stand behind the Jewish people and to let Syria know they were coming. Consequently, the Syrian tanks were commanded to retreat. Would the Jews have been slaughtered without that withdrawal? No question about it.

Does God keep His promises? The prophet Daniel predicted in 1,335 years the Jews would be blessed. Haggai added that the blessing would come on the 24th day of the 9th month of the year. When one adds up those numbers, they come out on December 9, 1917. On that day the Mayor of Jerusalem gave the keys of the city of Jerusalem to the British General that began the eventual recovery of the city by the Jews.

A miracle? Certainly. Just remember your personal story is of equal interest to your heavenly Father. Claim one of His promises and become part of the history of the miraculous. You are of equal importance to God.

A MIRACLE IN A GUN FIGHT

Does God still intervene in history and produce miracles? The headlines say no. The Bible says yes. I’ll stick with the Bible. You might respond, “Yeah, give me an example.” Here’s one.

Recently I have been studying the history of how the nation of Israel began in 1948 and how the Jewish people were sustained during the attack by the surrounding Arab nations immediately after independence was declared. Three thousand years earlier the scripture proclaimed that the Jew would return to Jerusalem. Would they survive?

In the late ‘40’s, the survivors of Hitler’s death camps had been escaping to Israel, hoping the United Nations would declare a Jewish state in Palestine. Once United Nations Resolution 181 passed, David Ben-Gurion declared the establishment of the nation of Israel. The Arab armies immediately attacked.

During the warfare, five Jewish defenders were perched on the edge of Old City walls as a multitude of Jordanian soldiers advanced toward them. The five men began firing and stopping some of the attackers, but the multitude kept coming. The Jews realized that they had only a few bullets left and would be quickly wiped out.

The defenders turned to each other and began praying. They called on YHWH, the God of Sinai, and prepared to die.

Suddenly the Arabs stopped. They began to cover their eyes. Someone cried out a blood-curdling scream. The Arabian soldiers turned and began running back down the hill. The five Jewish defenders stared almost in disbelief. What happened?

Several years later one of the five men met one of the Arab soldiers. He couldn’t miss the opportunity to ask him why they ran.

“Didn’t you see him?” the Arab said. “That gigantic figure standing behind you. He was huge! Scared us to death. We ran!”

The figure? An angel protecting God’s chosen people?

The point. God protects His own and that includes a much wider circle than only the Jews. His promises and purposes never change and last forever. You can be part of that special group.
