MORE THAN ONE MIRACLE?

Often, we think of people experiencing a miracle as if that’s a once in a lifetime experience. If you’ve had one, fantastic… but more than one?  One after another? Remember that the miraculous is a product of a divine relationship. Put away your calculator.

            Jodie Berndt discovered this fact when she lived with her younger sister Jennifer’s struggle with colon cancer. Jodie thought the problem was only a disorder. She didn’t understand that Jennifer stood at death’s door. Her sister simply kept her problem to herself until her mother recognized the lump in her stomach required a doctor.  The medical prognosis was immediate. Jennifer had a malignant tumor: cancer.

            But Jennifer immediately turned to and trusted God. She believed her heavenly Father would heal her. As she prayed, the scripture verse came to mind. “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine…” She knew God had spoken. Miracle one: Jennifer knew she would be healed.

            The story of Jennifer’s resolute faith spread and a local newspaper even wrote an article on her convictions. She was deluged by visitor’s and people she had never met wanting to know about her faith. A woman wrote, “If this teenager can find joy in the Lord, so can I.” The impact spread. Miracle two: others were impacted.

            Jennifer’s tumor had to be removed because it had grown to the size of a grapefruit. The doctors felt there was a good chance that the cancer had spread. To their amazement they could find no trace of cancer anywhere else in Jennifer’s body. It couldn’t be possible, but it was.  Miracle three.

            As a follow-up, a specialist at John Hopkins University examined Jennifer and came back with a conclusion. “It’s very unusual. I can’t even tell she ever had cancer.” Jennifer had recovered in an astonishing amount of time. She reflected, “Even with the physical pain, this has been one of the best times in my life.” Ten years later the physician who removed the tumor wrote, “Contrary to what so-often happens, she is clear of any risk of recurrence.” Miracle four.

            Jennifer’s perspective? Certainly, she was grateful for the healing, but her response was surprising. “The real miracle is in how God used my experience for His glory. I wrote down all the ways He was glorified and I counted more than sixty-five different items.”

            Thanks, Jennifer, for reminding us that glorifying God is the path to the miraculous.

THE ANGEL SWOOPED IN AND…

            Recently a dear friend asked me about angels. Did I believe in them? Do they really make a difference? She had been in a worship service where I was part of a time of healing prayer and ministry. People were touched and results followed. Did I think angels had some part in that service? Certainly.

            I explained that angels often use light, heat, or touch as vehicles to bring results. The person may have a sense of warmth that appears out of nowhere. Sometimes light will seem to envelope the person. Even though others don’t see the radiance, the person’s spiritual inner vision recognizes the need to be bathed in light. Perhaps, one of the most reassuring sensations is when we feel a touch and know no one is present. Angels simply work in their own ways.

            Eileen Freeman had a friend with a broken arm. The pain continually shot through her body and the break would not heal.  (For anonymity sake let’s call her Mary Ann) Her arm remained in a cast for six months. Ceaseless pain drained Mary Ann’s emotions and there seemed to be no end in sight. Doctors predicted that if the bone did heal, it would always be weak. The woman was completely discouraged.

            One evening after the children were in bed, Mary Ann sat in the living room with her husband. The pain reduced her to tears. She cried out, “Dear Jesus, I can’t take this anymore. Would you please send your angel to heal me. I would be so grateful.”

            A calmness settled over Mary Ann and she felt her depression lift. She immediately took this as a sign that healing would come. Because her spirit had been touched, she could now deal with the pain. The next evening as Mary Ann was sitting in the same living room, she felt a sudden surge of warmth and heat in her broken arm. She felt has if someone had touched her. As the sensation of heat faded, Mary Ann no longer felt pain. The woman flexed her fingers and her waist. Everything felt fine.

            A couple of days later, Mary Ann went to her orthopedist for x-rays.  Her arm had completely healed and he removed the cast. She had been touched by an angel.

            Could that happen to you? Of course. Unfortunately, most of us generally don’t reach out until we become desperate. From the deepest depths of our soul, we become open. But it doesn’t have to be in despair that we discover the angelic presence. Your guardian angel is there right now.

DREAMS CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING

            Ever have a dream that changed everything? A dream that lingered for days? Such dreams spring from the unconscious and have a way of burrowing into our conscious minds, alerting us to something important that we may have missed? The biblical stories of Jacob dreaming of a ladder coming down from heaven or Joseph being warmed to take the baby Jesus to Egypt reminds us of the importance of dreams. Here’s an example.

            Tom Doyle was an important frontline missionary in Egypt with a special ability to work with Muslims. The contact began when he discovered something was happening in the dreams of many Muslims encountering Jesus.  His friend Rami had one of these dreams.

            A man in a white robe appeared in Rami’s dream and said that he loved him. In his dream, Rami was standing beside a lake when he walked over and kissed Jesus. As Tom listened to people in Gaza City, he began to hear the same story again and again. Jesus would appear in the dream in a white robe, telling the person that he loved them and had died for them. Similar dream reports began coming in from all directions, Iran, Iraq, Syria, were reporting the identical dream.

            Ads were placed even in Egyptian newspapers. “Have you seen a man in a white robe in your dream? He has a message for you. Call this number.” These ads became a way that Christian ministries reached people.

            Kamal, one of his associates, felt he should go down to the Khan el-Khalin market place because God had a special assignment for him there. Out of the crowd, a Muslim woman named Noor broke through the crowd shouting, “You were in my dream last night! You’re the one. Those clothes – you were wearing those clothes. For sure, it was you.”

            Tom Doyle asked Noor, “Was I with Jesus?”

            “Yes,” the woman said. “Jesus was with us.”

            The woman explained, “Jesus walked with me alongside a lake and told me how much he loved me. I never felt so much peace. I ask him, “Why are you visiting me, a poor Muslim woman with eight children?” He said, “I love you, Noor. I have given everything for you. I died for you. Tomorrow, ask my friend about me. He will tell you everything you need to know to understand my visit.”

            “I have never been loved like I was when Jesus walked with me in that dream,” Noor said.

            The risen Christ is still coming to people both in their dreams and in their daily experience. Ask him to come to you, awake or asleep. He’ll show up with empowerment.

THE TERRORIST STARTED TO KILL WHEN …

            To say white supremacist David Young was a little crazy is an understatement. He came wheeling into Cookeville, Wyoming intent upon wiping out the elementary school. At one time Young had been the town’s marshal but was fired for incompetence and reckless behavior. Now, he was back to make the town pay.

 With gasoline bombs, rifles, and handguns, he and his wife raced into the school shouting, “This is a revolution, and I’m taking your school hostage!” The school secretary was warned that setting off any alarms or calling the police would result in every child being killed. Nearly a third of the town’s population, 150 children and several teachers were herded into a large room. They could only be saved by him receiving a $300 million ransom and a personal call from the President. His diary would later reveal that his real plan was to get the money and then blow-up the school, his wife, and himself.

When Young took off for the bathroom, he handed the bomb to his wife Doris. She apparently set it off by accident. The cataclysmic explosion completely wrapped her in flames. Smoke shot across the building. Teachers tried to throw children out the window as the entire room broke into flashing fire.

But it was in the midst of the attack that the miracles unfolded.

The escaping children told their parents what they saw. Down through the ceiling “beings of light” began to descend. First grader Nathan Harley thought immediately that they were angels. Rachel and Katie Walker said they were “bright like light bulbs” and that they hovered over the hostages protecting them from the flames. The angel hovering over Nathan told him she was his great grandmother. “The bomb is going to explode and the bad people are going to die. Go stand by the window.” Other “beings of light” told other children the same thing. A six-year-old heard “the presence” say a bomb was about to explode and she should hurry to the window.

Bomb expert Richard Haskell of the Sweetwater County sheriff’s office said, “To call it a miracle is the understatement of the century.”

Miracles happen in many different ways every day. The truth is that children are often more open than adults. They particularly frequently see and hear what their elders miss.  Here’s their message for you. Open yourself that you may see what you would never have expected otherwise.

THOUSANDS STARED IN AMAZEMENT WHEN …

            Every now and then I run across an amazing event that stops me in my tracks. In our secular society, most people don’t expect anything supernatural to happen and aren’t looking. But here’s what happened in Egypt when someone was open.

            A wealthy Muslim felt that the Madonna had appeared to him in a vivid dream asking him to build a church. The Virgin Mary promised to return when the church was finished. As unusual as it seemed, the Muslim constructed a Christian Church.

            Forty-three years later the devout old Muslim and his dream had been forgotten. An auto repair shop had been built across the street. Two Muslim mechanics stepped out for a breath of fresh air and noticed a glowing female standing on top of St. Mary’s Church of Zeitoun. They assumed a nun was contemplating suicide and ran for the pastor. When they returned, the woman was gone. Nevertheless, the word spread and at night crowds began to gather, hoping to see the lady return.

            Abruptly on April 9, the radiant lady appeared in a robe of glorious light. After that night, she kept appearing randomly and frequently on the roof of the church. Pictures were taken by the growing crowd. In startling clarity, the photos presented her figure real and confounding. The appearances lasted from 10 minutes to several hours. “Doves of light” appeared flying around the church. The crowds grew from tens of thousands to over 100,000. Everyone saw the Lady on the roof!

            Bishop Samuel, official investigator for the Copic Church, came and witnessed the bright light surrounding the Lady. Coptic Pope Kryllos sent Bishop Athanasius and he was equally overwhelmed. This “Lady of the Light” made hundreds of appearances before she stopped coming. While no exact reason for the appearances was ever revealed, the unresolved mystery  of her appearances continued as a response to the cold skepticism of the secular age. Conventional assumptions about reality had been severely challenged.

            Do those appearance stop you in your tracks? Gives you something to think about? While we may not know why they are, these appearances do have a purpose. Maybe one of them is to wake us up!

LOST IN DESPAIR UNTIL…

            Steve Kilcoyne was born into an Irish Catholic working class family. What his life was supposed to be was challenged to the core when he was drafted into service in the Vietnam war. Three times he appealed to avoid the inevitable, but was soon on his way to Da Nang. As was true for so, so many, the only way he could sustain his life with the carnage and terror was to stay drunk at night and stay on substance-induced drugs during the day. His life took on a surreal disoriented quality.

            When he returned to America, Steve began living on the street and wound up in the Haight Ashbury streets of San Francisco.  The summer of love had died and the streets were filled with drug addicts. One Spring afternoon, Steve walked down a street, struggling, angry, talking to himself, when he came to a red light and stopped. Before the light could change, his life was about to change.

            Steve looked up and saw a small angel hovering in the air above his head. Holding a sledge hammer, the angel kept beating on an iron anvil. Abruptly, on the other side a second angel was doing the same thing. In a flash, Steve felt a shockwave of awe and his war time wounds responding to this angelic presence. The desperation and savage anxiety eating away inside of him broke open. Steve knew he was no longer alone. As he gazed at the angels, incredible serenity filled him. These beings had come to protect and help him. Love that he had never known filled him. The angels pounding on their anvils sent a new energy through his body.

            Steve left the street life and went to a veteran’s hospital to deal with the trauma from the war. He quit drinking and using drugs. He contributed to the military’s growing understanding of post-trauma stress disorder. As his healing continued, he vowed to make some kind of meaningful art out of his war experience. With symbols of language and dreams, he wanted to portray the hidden truths that give life meaning. Out of this time came a dream he called Angels/Anvils. His theater of healing brought new reconciliation to a war-torn world.

            And how did the change occur? By an angelic visitation. You don’t have to go through the misery and struggle Steve did to recognize angels are equally concerned for you. Everybody has a guardian angel seen or unseen. That angel is continually working for you. Reach out and tell him hello.

HIS LIFE WAS RUINED UNTIL…

            Can angels make a difference? Oh, you bet! Whether you believe in angels or not, you still do have one: a guardian angel. Here’s an example of the impact they can make.

            John-Ray Johnson got permanently kicked out of school when he was almost 18 years-old for gambling. (Among other things) The worst came when he tried to run over the teacher who turned him in for drinking in his class. He escaped serious jail time only by agreeing to plead guilty, joining the Army and leaving town.

            John-Ray Johnson was on his way to Vietnam.

            His eighteen months on the front lines were a living hell. All around him, men were shot and mutilated. Bodies stacked in piles. The only way he could face the daily assaults was by staying drunk and high on drugs.

 He lost his soul in that war. When John-Ray came back, he was in such pain that he cared about nothing. Maybe he should just die.

            One afternoon his mother persuaded him to attend a cousin’s funeral with her. On that hot humid afternoon, John-Ray followed her to the cemetery. When he saw a canopy over the open grave, he couldn’t get any closer and turned away. Feeling like he was sick, he fell on the grass. When he looked up at the tombstone in front of him, there was his name. Even though the engraving turned out to be for a cousin he never knew, the grave marker jolted him like another night in Vietnam.

            John-Ray stood, ready to run when an eight-foot-tall angel appeared standing in front of him. The figure seemed to glow from within and stared at him with fierce eyes. The young man kept blinking, trying to make the towering spectacle disappear, but the angel continued glaring at him.

            When the angel started to walk away, John-Ray felt he had to follow. The angel walked faster and John-Ray had to almost run to keep up with him as they crossed the cemetery and came to the far backside. Suddenly the angel turned around. His fiery eyes had become pools of anger.                       

            Without saying a word, the angel pointed to an open grave. John-Ray shook with terror. Sobbing bitterly, he fell on his knees on the green grass. The grave seemed to be meant for him. 

            A hand touched his shoulder. John-Ray was certain it was the angel, but it was his mother. Thinking he was sick; she took him home and John-Ray tumbled into bed. The next morning, he knelt by his bed where he hadn’t prayed since childhood. He poured out his brokenness and confessed all the rotten things he had done. The angel experience had brought a profound desire to change.

            John-Ray entered a program for alcoholism and drug dependency to swipe away his addiction. He learned the plumbing trade and eventually married. A son followed. John-Ray became a committed Christian and witness to the love of God. The angel’s visit had saved him from a way of life that would have surely killed him. John-Ray had one desire left. When his life ends, he hopes to meet that angel again. Just wants to thank him.

            You don’t have to stagger through a cemetery to know an angel is watching over you. Everyone does have a guardian angel. Just don’t be hesitant to ask for guidance and help. He’ll be there.

THE DEAD RETURNED WHEN…

            Whether it’s popular to believe so or not, there is another dimension to reality. Often called eternity or heaven, “the other side” is God’s realm. While we don’t understand what’s “over there,” we get small insights now and then. Here’s an example of that reality that also brings a lesson to be remembered.

            Cardinal James Hickey, Archbishop of Washington, had been included in a VIP tour of Auschwitz Concentration Camp in Poland. With dread, he began a tour of the Nazi execution facility. The priest walked through the shower area used for gassing and on back to the crematoriums. Cardinal Hickey stared at the ovens where millions went up in smoke. Ashes and pieces of bone were still laying on the gurney.

            Overwhelmed by the ghastly sight, the priest stuck his hand in the ashes and began to intercede for the victims that died there. His profound and emotional prayer arose from the depth of his soul. As he prayed, he realized another group had come in and he must respect their visit. Father Hickey felt them coming closer. When he looked over his shoulder, the priest was startled that a group of men in black and white striped prison suits had now walked close and surrounded him. He assumed they must be dressed to portray former prisoners for visitors sake.

            They immediately began talking in different languages that Cardinal Hickey couldn’t understand. Polish, Russian, Yiddish, German; they kept trying to tell him something. “I’m sorry,” the priest said. ”I don’t understand.” He pulled his hand out of the oven. The group of men vanished!

            The priest was totally shaken. Never, never had he experienced anything like these apparitions! Father Hickey simply couldn’t digest what he had experienced. He staggered out of the death camp and returned to his hotel room where he decided rather than returning to Washington, he would go to Rome. A friend of Pope John Paul II, he had to talk with the Supreme Pontiff to gain some insight into this experience that continued to haunt him.

            When he met privately with the Pope, Cardinal Hickey related the whole story. Knowing the Pope was Polish and had lived through the terrors of WWII, he asked what it all meant.
            “It has happened before,” John Paul II told him. “Others have seen these same apparitions.”

            “But what does it mean?”

            The Pope said thoughtfully. “They are saying this must never happen again. We must all do what we can to stop it from ever recurring.”

            A message for all of us.
