MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

SUMMER RERUNS

The corona-virus pandemic has made it impossible for me to make the contacts to continue reporting extraordinary happenings to ordinary people. However, I’ve got a mail bag of these great stories so I’m recycling some that you probably never read. Here’s an example.

ENCOUNTERING AN ANGEL

Miracle talk and divine intrusions generally seem to occur among Christian people. In many Christian groups there is an unspoken assumption that Jews wouldn’t experience such things. Even though the Old Testament is filled with miraculous events such as the Red Sea parting and Elijah raising a widow’s dead son back to life, Jews are excluded today. Wrong.

Here’s an example to consider. I’ve discovered that an important ingredient in Jewish life is an encounter with God as well as divine leading. Karen Z. Brass is a close friend whose family live near me in Colorado. Her father was a survivor of five death camps including Auschwitz. Today her family regularly attends a synagogue.

Around seven years of age, Karen began dreaming about escaping her dysfunctional family and an extremely difficult and abusive mother. As she took her reoccurring dream of escaping this family setting apart, Karen began to understand she was being saved by angels.

This experience expanded with the emergence of a “circle of light” that appeared at night giving her the assurance and security to go to sleep. Angels were regularly quieting her fears.

When Karen became an adult woman, she became aware of spontaneous thoughts that popped into her head and gave her guidance. For example, she would hear a thought like “take the umbrella.” If she didn’t pay attention, it would rain and she’d get drenched. “Don’t wear those shoes” might come through. If she went ahead and wore them, Karen was certain to trip and fall. In time, Karen realized that she had a guardian angel who kept her protected. When the angels spoke, it began like a whisper. If they repeated the message, the whisper got louder. Karen now often holds out her hands to let the angel know she is paying attention.

Karen met her husband David through an angelic intrusion. At a synagogue service, as she started to park her car, the angelic voice insisted she move to a different place than she intended. Karen argued that she saw a better spot but the angel was insistent. She gave in and parked as guided. During the service, she met David for the first time and was immediately attracted. Continuing their conversation, David walked Karen out to her car. To her surprise, she had parked next to him!

Today, Karen never ceases to listen for angelic guidance.

While not a miracle, hearing and being guided by angels is definitely a divine intrusion. Obviously, the angels don’t stop to check your religious membership card before they respond. Here’s a word of encouragement for you. Is it possible that some of your thoughts might not be random? Could you have been guided by a guardian angel and didn’t know it?

It’s worth thinking about.

If you’ve encountered a divine intervention, I’d like to hear your experience.

SUMMER RERUNS

The corona-virus pandemic has made it impossible for me to make the contacts to continue reporting extraordinary happenings to ordinary people. However, I’ve got a mail bag of these great stories so I’m recycling some that you probably never read. Here’s an example.

Patty Sills’s condition was diagnosed as Tardive Dystoma which meant her neck muscles continually contracted and pulled her head to one side. Patty had no control over her neck and was in constant pain. The condition made her spine bulge. She could be medicated but not cured. Doctors told Patty she would have this condition the rest of her life.

Patty told me that she didn’t want to live anymore. She couldn’t work or pursue any hobbies because she was so uncomfortable. Patty was certain she would be better off dead. Her voice sounded desperate as she described her deteriorating emotional condition.

Having grown up in the Roman Catholic Church, Patty had lots of problems with church procedures. Organized religion only imparted other issues. Consequently, she was particularly skeptical about TV healers and churches in general.

Leslie, a young woman who had a reputation for talking with angels and praying for hurting people, was introduced to Patty. The whole idea seemed absurd, but Patty was desperate.

Leslie asked Patty to lay flat on a table and she began to pray. Leslie’s hands became so hot that heat radiated through Patty’s body. When Leslie moved to her neck, Patty went into a convulsion and felt outside herself. She had to have help to stand.

The next day everything changed. Her incurable condition completely disappeared. If you ask her if she believes in miracles, she will tell you that she is living proof they still happen.

Since I began working on this subject, I have been amazed at how many stories I have turned up. They often come from people I know who have been reluctant to talk about their experiences that powerfully reordered their lives. In the contemporary world immersed in scientism and secularization, the idea that Divinity still reaches into everyday life and radically changes physical problems is considered nonsense. In the average mainline church, no one has seen a miracle or expects to encounter one. The subject remains closed.

But so were a number of other practices that are now totally accepted.

In the late ‘60s when I came out of seminary, people who claimed such cures were considered on the crazy side. Consequently, talk of miracles has been off the table for a long time. In these blogs we will be exploring many stories like Patty’s and will hopefully help you discover how to become a part of this new revolution that the Holy Spirit is bringing to the world. Miracles still happen!

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

Robert Wise explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. Can 21st century people believe the hand of God still touches people today?

ANGELS ARE FOR REAL

Francis and Judith MacNutt have been friends of mine for decades. Recently, Francis passed to heaven. Judith continues their ministry. One of her books that I would highly recommend is Angels are For Real (Chosen Books) where she relates this experience.

Susan worked in O’Hare Airport where Judith met her. For some times she had been suffering with an undiagnosed severe abdominal cramping. Eventually, she had to be rushed to the ER where she was hospitalized. After testing, the results indicated her condition was serious.

Around midnight as the pain worsened, Susan cried out to God for relief. Her stomach had become distended. Even with the additional medication the doctor prescribed, nothing halted the pain. Again, she cried out for divine intervention.

In an adjacent room, a patient with terminal cancer heard the cry and came in. Wearing the usual hospital gown, the terribly thin and frail woman offered to pray for her. Susan begged her to because her pain had become so intense that she was even ready to die. Susan instantly begged for the woman to intercede for her.

“Do you mind if I anoint you with oil?” the woman asked.

Susan again agreed. The woman anointed her forehead and began praying. As she prayed, Susan’s stomach returned to normal size and the pain slowly decreased. Susan was so overjoyed she kept thanking the woman and finally fell into a deep, peaceful sleep.

When the doctor returned in the morning, he was surprised that Susan was sitting up in bed. Later he told her that he had not expected her to live through the night. To his even greater surprise, when he examined her, he could find absolutely nothing wrong with her.

Susan proceeded to tell him what had happened, only making him look more confused. He asked for a more detailed description of the lady who prayed. Susan went into great detail while watching his face become more confounded.

Finally, the doctor said, “That’s impossible! The woman you described died at 8:00 last night.”

UNEXPECTED APPEARANCE

My personal encounters with people who experienced a divine encounter has been exciting and inspirational. Sometimes their stories are simply too difficult to use in my blogs. I make sure that what I write is sound and authentic. At the same time, miracles tend to stop a person in their tracks. My personal hidden agenda in producing these accounts is to help people cross the line between the physical, observable world and learn to enter the divine dimension that the New Testaments offers.

While interviewing people, I have also made my own discoveries of events occurring in everyday life that one would not expect. This happened when I was talking with Lara Woodward. Lara certainly knew about miraculous events.

Much earlier, Lara lived in Tillson, Kansas when a tornado came roaring through. The house she was in moved over 50 feet and a fence post erupted in the middle of the room she was standing in. Amazingly, no one was hurt! You can bet that occurrence encouraged her prayer life.

In 1984, Lara mistakenly ingested a poisonous substance and quickly became sick. Realizing her serious condition, Lara prayed fervently for divine help to save her. During her prayer, she abruptly felt the arms of Jesus around her. Peace of mind flowed into her and she knew she would be alright. When the doctor examined her, he concluded, “Lara, it’s a miracle you are alive.”

However, the story that I came to talk with Lara about was of a different order. Living in Kansas at the time, she was watching television when she realized that a man was standing in the room with her. Surprised, she blinked and looked a second time. At that moment, Lara realized the man was her daughter’s husband Rick. They lived in Oklahoma and Lara had no idea he would be coming to her house. Rick was wearing a red shirt and looked straight at her.

He said, “I am dying.”

Lara knew she was totally wide awake and had clearly seen him before he disappeared.

Shaking her head, she went back to watching television. Two days later she got a phone call from her daughter.

“Mother, I have sad news.”

Lara instantly said, “Is it Rick?”

“Yes,” her daughter said. “Rick’s gone.”

When Lara attended the funeral, the last portion of the service was to pass by the open casket. She looked in and discovered Rick wearing a red shirt just as she had seen him by her television.

DEE DEE’S RECOVERY

DEE DEE’S RECOVERY

Recently I was talking with an old friend that I have known for decades. We were reminiscing about past experiences. Dee Dee Bailey began sharing an extraordinary encounter she had when I was pastor of a church she attended. Dee Dee had developed kidney stones that became increasingly serious. She ended up in the hospital and that’s where the divine intervention happened.

Her doctor told her he would be gone for the weekend and had turned her case over to a fellow physician who would care for her. The other guy forgot!

On Saturday Dee Dee realized her condition was worsening but no one seemed to be paying any attention to her. By Sunday morning, she was in a crisis. A nurse called the doctor who realized that he had forgotten about her needs and he rushed in. Her blood pressure began dropping drastically. Her temperature soared. As she drifted away, Dee Dee could hear the nurse saying, “Doctor, we’re losing her. We are losing her!”

At that moment Dee Dee sat up … except her body was still laying on the bed. She felt herself rising upward toward a corner in the ceiling. When she looked around, two gigantic figures were standing on each side of her. Intuitively, she knew they were angels. Dee Dee took one last look at her body while the doctor and nurse frantically worked over her. The angels abruptly whisked her away. She flew through the ceiling and off toward this magnificent overwhelming bright light. Along the way, Dee Dee heard musical sounds far beyond anything she had ever heard in her life. No one had yet composed such a symphony.

And then she came to the end of the journey and stepped out into the presence of Jesus Christ, standing there with his arms wide open. She rushed toward him and he hugged her. Even though she had two young daughters, the all-consuming peace that she felt so engulfed her that Dee Dee was ready to stay and leave the world behind.

In a kind, gentle voice, Jesus told her that she had to go and return back because Dee Dee had tasks and duties yet to be performed. Like a giant bungee cord hurling her backward, Dee Dee returned down the same path that had taken her into eternity. She plunged back into the hospital room. As she described it, Dee Dee said she “flopped” back into her body and opened her eyes. The nurse exclaimed, “She’s alive! Alive!”

Dee got well and her medical problems disappeared.

What did she do with her God given responsibilities? Living in Norman, Oklahoma where the University of Oklahoma is located, Dee Dee began working with college students and befriending kids in need. She taught the ministry of healing and brought many collegiate into prayer work.

Did she fulfill her divinely imparted assignment? Absolutely.

MIRACLE IN THE SNOW

MIRACLE IN THE SNOW

Lois Parker discovered this story while talking with a Russian woman who had the experience while a girl. Sophie related that she had foolishly decided to brave the subzero temperatures and blizzard conditions of a fierce Russian winter and walk to her father’s house. In the dark forests that surround her village, the people could hear the wolves howling at night. Even with these conditions, she set out in the blowing snow to get to her destination.

As Sophie treaded through the drifts, she could feel the snow starting to sink into her boots and knew this meant a real problem. With the wolves barking in the forest, she knew she was in trouble. However, there was no possibility of turning back safely. Sophie had to go on, but she didn’t know how she would be able to do so. Even worse, the sound of the wolves seemed to come closer. Finally, she stopped and whispered.

“Lord of heaven, be with me, help me.”

Sophie began to run through the snow. She strained to hopefully hear the jingle of bells signaling a sleigh was looking for her, but again, there was nothing. Her feet were becoming frighteningly cold. When she looked back, Sophie could see that the trail behind her was erratic, meaning she was not walking steadily.

Once more, Sophie stopped and started to pray again. “Father, help me, I need Thee. Help me. Send an angel to help me. Lord of all, be with me.” Over and over she prayed the same prayer, always ending with “Help, Lord.”

She felt a hand on her shoulder. A soft, kind voice spoke in her ear. “You cannot rest, Sophie. Go on.”

When she turned, no one was there, but Sophie felt slightly renewed strength. She kept on. However, weariness soon returned. The wolves howled again. Sophie was certainly she would not be able to continue. They’d find her in the snow frozen. She stumbled.

Again, the kind, gentle voice, said in her ear, “Sophie, you cannot rest yet! Go on.”

Almost against her will, she was raised to her feet, but saw no one. She struggled on until she found the door to her father’s house. Only then did she look back and fully realize there had never been any second set of tracks in the snow… none.

Only then did Sophie fully realize that her prayers had been answered. She was saved by an angel.

FROM OUT OF THE PAST

Periodically, I hear from people who have experienced miracles or divine interventions. I look forward to receiving these accounts as they deepen our understanding of how these experiences occur. Often, they tell me that no one else knows as they haven’t told a soul what happened. The climate in our society doesn’t produce understanding of these events so the recipients have just sat on their valuable discovery.

Could you be like that? If so, please share your story with me. Drop me a note at revwise@att.net.

Mary Janssen did exactly that this week. Her 12-year-old son Adam died in an accident in their home. Of course, Mary was crushed. That night she couldn’t go to sleep and abruptly realized Adam was standing at the foot of the bed wearing a white robe. Next to him stood another white robed person, but she couldn’t see the face. Adam gave her a thumbs up.

Four months later, Mary had a similar experience. This time the encounter seemed to be more like a vision. Adam came into a room filled with people whose faces she couldn’t identify. Adam conveyed that when he died, his grandmother was waiting for him and was standing there with him now. Mary’s first son Nathan had died as an infant from a heart defect. He was there with Adam. Mary was amazed.

Six-months later she had another similar experience. This time a big wooden door was opened and beautiful light filtered through. People were clapping and a parade was coming down the street that seemed to be in Italy. Adam was in the center of a group of boys, all carrying flags, Adam waved to her. Men were carrying a chair in the air holding Pope John Paul. The scene made Mary very happy. Even with the losses she had endured, Mary knew something important had happened to her.

Through the years, I have encountered similar experiences other people had with someone close to them who had just died. I offer no explanation except that the Holy Spirit seems to comfort the bereaved with these events.

After all Jesus promised, “I will ask the Father and he will give you another Counselor, the Spirit of truth to be with you forever. … for he lives with you and will be in you.” (John 14:16-17)

HE’S GONE AND DONE IT AGAIN!

HE’S GONE AND DONE IT AGAIN!

You will remember Kimberly McConnell from several weeks back. She had an MRI that demonstrated her pancreas was covered with tumors that could be cancerous. After healing prayer, she entered the hospital only to find the next MRI revealed the tumors were gone. Kimberly had a marvelous recovery.

But here’s the rest of the story.

I was gone for a week and out of contact with Kimberly. When I returned to Colorado, I checked in with her, expecting another positive report. Wrong. Kimberly was nearly beside herself. Instantly, I knew she was in deep despair. What in the world had gone wrong?

It turned out the medical profession had really messed her up. Kimberly had several doctors working with her and they didn’t all agree on how to proceed. One of them arbitrarily gave her steroids for some reason or the other. Kimberly’s psychiatrist hit the ceiling. Someone with a bi-polar condition should never, never be given steroids. Besides being a possibly dangerous drug for her, it threw her system into turmoil. The bi-polar condition returned with a vengeance. When I was talking to her on the phone, Kimberly was in the depths of depression with her instability turning her inside out. She couldn’t just drop the steroid medication but had to be weened away over a period of weeks. Her struggle would have to continue.

A number of years before, a medical condition had caused her to lose her teeth and she wore dentures. During this current emotional episode, Kimberly lost her false teeth. After looking everywhere, she called her mother to come and help. Kimberly had not been out of her apartment so the dentures had to be in there somewhere.

Her mother came over with a friend and they frantically searched every inch of the house. She had given Kim a large over-stuffed chair and they looked all over the chair as well as every other piece of furniture in the house. Finally, they concluded that during her bi-polar episode, she must have flushed the teeth down the toilet. The mother rushed out to spend $1,100 on a new set of dentures that wouldn’t be ready for three weeks.

Kimberly sank deeper into despair.

As we talked on the phone across a thousand miles, I ask Kimberly to pray with me. Even though we were at a great distance apart, I suggested she feel my hand on hers. I prayed that I could be a conduit for the Holy Spirit to fill Kimberly with new insight, knowledge, stability, and a sense of well-being. We prayed for a long time. Finally, Kimberly said she felt better and we hung up.

An hour later, I returned to my desk and noticed I had missed her phone call. Immediately, I responded worrying self-destructive behavior was a genuine possibility. I was astonished when Kimberly answered quite to the opposite. Her voice burst forth in enthusiasm.

“Robert! You won’t believe it! After we hung up, I went in and was sitting on the edge of the bathtub when a voice surged through my mind. I knew it wasn’t me or some sort of hallucination. The voice said, ‘Go turn the big chair upside down.”

“No one had done that,” Kimberly said. “We had searched it, but not turned it over. I immediately went into the living room and did so. My dentures fell out! I know God was with me and would take me through this time of getting off the steroids. He has kept his hand on me!”

An unexpected intervention, but marvelous indeed!
