A MIRACLE IN THE DARK

Studying miracles is always walking into a mystery. We can never be sure what comes next or how the hand of God will move. Exploring how a miracle occurred or attempting to fathom the meaning is important and helpful, but when we are finished there are more unanswered questions than what have been already discovered. The Holy Spirit moves like the wind, unseen but felt. That’s the way of the miraculous. What counts is believing, not understanding.

Pastor James Mutahi can tell you about faith. Now a pastor in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he was originally a pastor in Kenya, East Africa. During that time, Pastor James noticed that his two-year old daughter Mary had stopped playing with the other children. She hardly touched her supper and then her temperature began to rise. Something was wrong.

As the evening progressed so did the problem. The child’s temperature continued to rise. Sponge baths were administered to cool her, but nothing helped. James and his wife Jane gave her Tylenol but that didn’t stop the problem. Both parents laid down but couldn’t sleep. Something was dreadfully wrong with their child. At 2:00 in the morning Jane came to the conclusion that they should take little Mary to the hospital. James could hear the rain beating down on the roof and pouring down all night. That could be a problem.

James Mutahi had always been a man of prayer and during the entire evening he had silently prayed for his daughter. He didn’t disagree with Jane about taking her to the hospital, but he deeply believed God could heal her. Even as he rolled out of bed, James hung on to that conviction.

As soon as he started the van, James knew they had another issue. The wheels would only spin. In Kenya, the sticky clay soil saturated by rain can make it impossible for a vehicle to move. No matter how sick little Marry was, there wasn’t going to be a trip to the hospital. The family had to go back into the house.

James and Jane began praying aloud. James believed in his God of miracles and called on the Lord to come and save his daughter. As the rains kept coming down, their prayers kept going up. And then it happened! Mary’s temperature began going down. Her feverish body began to cool. Mary started to recover. No doctor or medicine had made the difference. James could see his faith validated as his daughter began to recover.

The next day was Sunday. James and Jane shared the story with their church of what had happened the night before. The congregation rejoiced that the intervention of the miraculous had restored this little one. The experience was an affirmation that God is always near. James and Jane remembered the promise of Jesus that he would never forsake them.

What can you gather from their experience? Don’t forget that the issue isn’t your understanding, but your believing. The more you grow in faith, the more you will expect and your heavenly Father will answer.

            Remember to expect the unexpected!

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

THE EMPOWERMENT NEVER STOPS

Our TIME FOR EMPOWERMENT SERVICE last Thursday night was a powerful experience of renewal and healing. We appreciate all who were part of this gathering at Church of the Acts, Oklahoma City. These events will resume in the Fall.

Here’s another miraculous event you’ll find inspiring. Raven Nelson is a full-blood American Indian. As happened to many Indian children, he was placed in a foster home where he experienced abuse and went to the hospital a number of times. Raven had damage to his back from a bullet wound, beatings, and fights. Raven knew about pain.

In the late ‘90’s he began work in bail enforcement which is essentially being a bounty hunter. The work was dangerous and Raven was often in peril. During one of those episodes, he had to be taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Vancouver, Washington. While he was in the emergency room, Raven had a near-death experience.

As the doctors worked frantically on over him, Raven started floating up to the ceiling where he could look down on the medical personnel working over his body.

He clearly needed a blood transfusion but the hospital had no type AB on hand. His blood pressure dropped to the bottom and his heart stopped. The medical team quickly placed electric defibrillation paddles on his chest to start the heart again. Raven’s heart stopped twice.

While the doctors worked desperately, Raven was some place else. He abruptly realized that a tall man was standing on his right side. Wearing a white robe with a gold belt, he had long flowing hair and fire in his eyes.  He reached over and took his hand.

“I died for you,” he said. “Won’t you give me a chance?”

Raven could feel the man’s love penetrating his heart and knew something highly important was happening to him. The man faded and Raven drifted back into his body. His heart had started beating again. Four days later, he walked out of the hospital.

Through the emergency room experience, he had come to an experience and understanding of God’s love. Something new stirred in his heart and Raven knew he had to find that man who stood next to him in the hospital. Raven began a very personal search.

Studying the Bible, he felt the personal relationship growing. A new beginning and life had begun. The better way was unfolding. Eventually all pain vanished. Raven and his wife Vi began holding Bible studies and meetings.

The out- of- the body experience had produced a in- this- world change! Remember that the promises are always there. Don’t be afraid to ask.

Expect the unexpected.

THE REORDERING PRESENCE

Anyone interested in miracles will find Lee Strobel’s The Case for Miracles to be an important read. Strobel builds a strong case for intellectually believing in the interventions of God. He presents both sides of the case for and against supernatural experience. The “for” far out weights the “against.” Here’s an example.

Dr. Craig S. Keener, Ph.D is a well-known prodigious writer. One colleague described him as a scholar who comes along once in a century. However, that reputation did not come easy. As a boy, Keener had friends who did not adhere to the Christian faith, and a few claimed to be atheist. One day coming home from school, he was confronted by the doubters as well as believers who challenged him. As little Craig Keener finally walked home by himself, he kept thinking about their confrontations. Sitting down in his bedroom, Craig continued to argue with himself. Could their objections be true? And then he sensed “it” in the room with him.

While he couldn’t define what was happening, Craig Keener knew God’s presence was suddenly there. Real, genuine, with him. The “Presence” exceeded all questions. He tried to spill out the issues his friends had confronted him with, but suddenly Craig felt something rush through his body. Never before had he known such a sensation, but he knew God had filled his life. Craig was immediately filled with wonder and worship.

God’s greatness and awesomeness filled his life. As the encounter grew, Craig Keener realized his purpose in life. Moreso, he understood what The purpose is for everyone. All of us are to love God, to serve Him, and to worship Him. Craig put it this way. “Everything is to be built around Jesus.”

From those few moments has grown a lifetime of accomplishment. Twenty-five years later, Keener had authored twenty-one books and been a professor at Asbury Theological Seminary. But the story began one afternoon in a schoolboy’s bedroom. Craig Keener discovered skeptics can become saints.

THROUGH A RADIO

Recently, a dear friend who has financially supported these weekly blogs and the monthly videos on YouTube, asked me if others had helped. I had to say no. She responded, “I bet many people have been blessed through the weekly and monthly programs. If so, they might want to help with the expenses of recording, editing, directing, and other professional helps. Ask them.”

So, I am. If these stories of miracles and the touch of God have been of value to you, your donations would be deeply appreciated. You can send them to ROBERT L. WISE, PO BOX 22716, OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA,  73123. Each week and month, these stories go around the world and are read by thousands of people. Who knows who you might be reached and helped through your contribution?

Can a published blog make a difference.? Here’s an example of the possible impact. I’ve known LaDonna Osborne for a number of years. The daughter of missionary evangelists T.L. and Daisy Osborn, LaDonna continues to carry their ministry through Africa. Not necessarily as well known in America, the Osborn family has touched thousands of people through the decades.

Because of the advent of the Covid pandemic, LaDonna was forced to cancel mass meetings and begin broadcasting through the radio to the Runyakole-speaking people of Uganda, East Africa.  Immediately the reports began coming in. A multitude responded. In addition, to affirming the gospel, the reports of healings followed.

A person with fistula began following LaDonna’s directions and instruction she offered over the radio. African doctors had not been able to help. LaDonna suggested the sacrament she calls The Table of the Lord. The African woman started following the prayers and crying out in faith.  The next day the pain was gone and healing followed. Now she tells all her friends to find the recovery of their joy through contact with God.

A person with Prostate Cancer was in the last stages of this dreaded disease. The humiliating circumstances had left the man in despair. A friend suggested he listen to the radio and tune in LaDonna’s program. As he listened, she suggested listeners pray with her. As she kept saying, “believe, believe, believe,” he prayed with her. Following the broadcast, he again prayed a simple child’s prayer of intercession. Almost immediately he was healed. He ended his letter to LaDonna saying, “God is great!”

Do miracles still happen? You bet!

The results of LaDonna Osborne’s ministry go on and on. The impact of these blogs and videos touch people I’ll never meet as well. Really exciting, isn’t it? If you so choose, thank you for being part of this outreach through your donations and gifts.

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

PERSISTENCE PAYS

A number of times Jesus taught about the value of endurance even in the midst of struggles. In the l8th chapter of Luke’s Gospel, he gave the parable of the widow and the unjust judge with the admonition to always pray and not give up. Lydiah Parkinson’s story is an encouragement to us when the clouds seem to be hanging heavy over our house. She found this to be important in her life as she struggled to have a baby. Born in Kenya, East Africa, Lydiah had become a licensed practical nurse.  Her story makes the point. Divine interventions often take more time than we expect.

Lydiah and her husband Terry had been married for a year and a half when they decided they wanted a family. Unfortunately, they didn’t seem to be able to conceive. They turned to Dr. Benny Walker who recommended specialists in St. Paul, Minnesota. Extensive tests were run but no physical abnormalities were found. Lydiah began to pray over and over again. All they wanted was a baby…. just one baby would be fine, but nothing seemed to happen. She even began to envy other young mothers who seemed to have children so easily.

One Sunday evening, Lydiah attended Abundant Life Church, Blaine, Minnesota because an evangelist from Russia was speaking.  During the service, this unknown pastor stopped and called for her to come to the front of the church.  As the Holy Spirit moved, the evangelist had a word of knowledge. He told Lydiah that her desperate prayers had been heard and they would be answered within the coming year. She was surprised and hopeful … but…

Migraine headaches began to occur and she had to fight depression. Still struggling, she and her husband turned to artificial insemination. When nothing happened, Lydiah began to think about adoption of a child from another country, but her father James Mutahi had another idea. A deeply spiritual person, he believed that God still had a different plan for them. He encouraged her to continue in prayer and not lose sight of what her faith could bring. He encouraged Lydiah and Terry to believe that they would have a baby of their own.

One month later all of those prayers were answered. Lydiah was pregnant! The pregnancy was difficult with complications. Lydiah lost weight and struggled through hard days but the delivery came and a beautiful baby girl was born. Even with all the adversities and the weight loss problem, what the Russian evangelist told her had come to pass.  Baby Kimberly Elisabeth was everything they had hoped for.

Perhaps, you are wondering if all those complications been could have been avoided. I have no answer to that question. Possibly, the problem arose from circumstances we can’t understand. The real answer is that God’s promise came to pass. Next time you are struggling with delay, remember Lydiah as well as the story of Hannah in I Samuel. Ofter persistence does its own work in our life. Delay can build faith even when the darkness sets in. In those dark moments often the most important lessons of endurance are learned. Remember that the arm of the Lord is never short.

A VISIT IN THE NIGHT

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

A VISIT IN THE NIGHT

This past week I had a conversation with Janet Wagner. We remembered and discussed an important event that happened while she was a Bible Study Fellowship teacher. Previously working as a banker, Janet had always been a healthy person who never got headaches, not until the moment she suddenly felt like her head would explode. Here’s her story.

In the middle of the night, Janet awoke in severe pain. Thinking it might be a migraine, she turned to a neurologist who immediately ordered an x-ray. Three spots showed up that looked like they could be cancer. The situation was serious!

The neurologists sent Janet to the hospital and scheduled a biopsy. He planned to drill holes in her skull to access the tumors. Beyond painful, the entire procedure frightened Janet to her core. Such a procedure could take her life. Her friends from Bible Study Fellowship gathered around and prayed. That night Janet’s husband slept on a cot next to her bed. She drifted off into a troubled sleep.

At around 4:00 in the morning, Janet felt a weight on the bed like someone had just sat down. She

“Lord, is that you?”

Janet heard the voice answer, “Yes.”

“I am really scared. “

The voice answered, “I know. I am with you to the end of time. You will not have the biopsy tomorrow.”

“Are you sure?” Janet asked. “Yes,” the voice answered and then He was gone.

The next morning at 8:30 the doctor came in. “I’ve changed my mind,” he said. “We’re not going to do the biopsy after all. We’ll give you some steroids and wait awhile.” Janet went home!

After thirty days, the doctor called her back for another MRI. She was to be rolled into an extremely tight enclosure that felt like a coffin. Once again, fear gripped Janet and she silently prayed for help. Abruptly a figure appeared beside her. She looked again. Taller than Janet expected, she stared at the long black hair hanging down to his shoulders. With piercing blue eyes, he had on a royal blue linen robe with gold trim. Janet knew the figure was Jesus.

“I’m with you. Don’t be afraid.” And then he was gone.

Janet showed me the x-rays from before and thirty days later. The three tumors had simply disappeared. She told the doctor a miracle had occurred. He had no better explanation.

Several years later, when I talked to Janet this week, she affirmed all that happened. Her faith was stronger than ever! Janet Wagner offers you encouragement in your journey. Just remember. Expect the unexpected.

WHAT ONE SEED CAN ACCOMPLISH

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

Robert Wise explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

 WHAT ONE SEED CAN ACCOMPLISH

This past week we’ve watched the world torn apart. The rampant epidemic of death has been more than almost anyone can absorb. The shootings in Tulsa, Oklahoma occurred in the exact same office where my dearest friend had been scheduled to go for a treatment this coming week. Such a realization brings me to my knees. We need the rebirth of encouragement during these horrific times. Perhaps, this story from New Delhi, India can help.

Dorthey Faye Higbee, a pastor, was part of a ministry team that brought thousands of people to a service for healing prayer. During the service a child suffering the ravages of polio was brought forward. An “untouchable” from India’s lowest class, the team prayed over him and felt something unfolding, but the crowd rushed forward and the boy disappeared in the press of the people. They knew he had no hope if he wasn’t healed, but he had vanished. All that they found later was one small crutch leaning against the platform.

The next night a policeman came forward. The night before he had seen the prayers for the boy and had to present his son for prayer as well. Earlier he had been sent to arrest the ministry team for any infraction, but because of what he saw the officer brought his son back only for the team’s ministry. As they prayed, the child’s eye straightened and for the first time in his life, he could see clearly. The policeman grabbed the microphone to proclaim the power of God available through Jesus. The ministry continued on into the night.

As the service ended, the team noticed something unexpected. Next to the crutch left from the night before, was a second identical crutch. What had begun as one seed had sprouted into an abundance of transformation.

Let us pray that in the families of these many victims of gun shootings, that new seeds of promise can be planted even in this dark hour. We can pray for continued healing. Remember that the promises are always there. Don’t be afraid to ask.

Expect the unexpected.

WHEN THE UNEXPECTED HAPPENS

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

Robert L. Wise explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

 WHEN THE UNEXPECTED HAPPENS

Sometimes I hesitate to report what I’ve discovered because it would seem too far out for the average person immersed in secularism… or even many church goers. Nevertheless, I’ve found these extraordinary events happen. Here’s an example.

Living Faith Church in Spokane, Washington had a motorcycle club. The Pastor often led the way and was part of the club. He had just turned on Elk-Chatroy Road with the riders following him. When he glanced in his rearview mirror, he saw the last motorcycle go flying off the road. Pastor Richardson and the club ran down the slope and found Doug Dureheim under a pile of barbed wire bleeding. He had broken bones with horrible gashes on his legs and arms.

Doug Dureheim wasn’t moving. There was no pulse and his eyes were blank. Choked with tears, one of the bikers mumbled, “He’s dead.”

Pastor Richardson felt anger surge through his body. “This will not end like this. It will not!”

The Pastor called on everyone to start praying. Reaching down, he put his hand on Doug’s body. In a loud voice, he commanded Doug to live in the name of Jesus.

Abruptly, Doug pitched forward and groaned. He opened his eyes. The group jumped back in shock. After a moment, they started clapping and cheering.

A nurse had seen Doug go flying off the road. She stopped and came back to help. Shortly an ambulance arrived. The crew initially doubted if Doug could still be alive. Cutting the barbed wire loose from his body, they prepared to haul him to the hospital.

One of the attendants leaned over to the Pastor and said, “This is a miracle, sir. There’s no logical reason why this man should be alive. This is one I can’t explain.”

The miracle was the only explanation possible.

Remember that the promises are always there. Don’t be afraid to ask.

Expect the unexpected.
