THE MIRACLE MAN TOO

Occasionally someone will ask how I got so interested in miracles. The truth is because one happened to me!

For years, I hit the gym a couple of times a week and worked up to lifting a rather amazing amount of weight. I had (not going to tell you how much because you probably wouldn’t believe it or think I was crazy) as I was saying, I was doing squats on a loaded squat machine when my foot slipped. The barbells came smashing down and I could hear my ankles snapping, cracking. Men rushed over to get the weights off the exercise machine and I tumbled over on the floor.

The catch was that I had a wedding to perform in an hour and a half and I couldn’t go to the hospital without ruining the bride’s big moment. The ushers placed a chair in the middle of the chancel. Carried me in. Did the ceremony. Headed for the hospital. By 10:00 p.m., my wife wheeled me out with both ankles in a plaster cast.

During the next week, the pain proved to be excruciating. I had to get around in my office in a wheelchair. By Friday afternoon, I almost couldn’t stand the discomfort and had the secretary call my men’s group to come and pray for me Saturday morning.

The group assembled and started interceding. I couldn’t get my mind focused on praying with them because the throbbing kept pounding. One of the men had pursued healing prayer and began, “O Lord, we come before you are seeking healing and relief for our brother.” His prayer became even more fervent. An unexpected sensation started stirring in my feet and began to move toward my ankles. The sensation started moving up my body, carrying the pain with it. I couldn’t believe  what was happening. I was so surprised that the pain was leaving that I was no longer paying any attention to the prayer group.

I started praying, “Oh, don’t stop! Keep moving and taking the pain with you.” In a minute and a half, the torment vanished. I jumped up out of my wheelchair and began hobbling around on the two plaster casts. The men in the prayer group stared in astonishment.

Two days later, I returned to the doctor for x-rays. He came in and held the two colloid panels up. The one from the week before showed the cracks in my bones. The x-ray taken that day had none.

The orthopedist shook his head. “Sure looks like a miracle to me.”

Three days later, I was back in the gym. One of the men who carried me to my car walked by and stopped abruptly. He couldn’t believe his eyes. How could I be back in the gym? I told him exactly what had happened. The next Sunday he was in my congregation and later joined the church. All because my foot slipped.

Did I have good reason to believe in miracles, or what? That’s how these blogs began. And you? Are you reaching for the same display of God’s power and love? You should be. Expect the unexpected. His hand never stops moving.

Remember miracles never cease.
