MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

WHEN EASTER HAPPENED A SECOND TIME

Easter is the celebration of the miracle of life. What happened in Jerusalem in 33 A.D. hasn’t stopped. The impact continues into eternity. Here’s  an example.

The Korean church leader Sung Ryong Kwak had been developing a ministry team that might propel their 700-member church to even greater heights. Deaconess Lee was one of the prime leaders working in team ministry. When the call from the hospital came, everyone was shocked. Lee had been found in her room with carbon monoxide poisoning  and rushed to the hospital. The report was that her condition was serious.

Sung Kwak rushed to the small hospital in their village. A group had already gathered around the emergency room. The report was that the medical team was preparing to administer an electrical jump start to her heart. The defibrillator might restart the natural rhythm of Lee’s heart to begin again. Through the glass window, Sung could see the doctor’s working feverishly to shock the deaconess back to life but nothing seemed to be happening. He could see that the procedure wasn’t working.

The doctors finally emerged shaking their heads. They reported, “The patient is dead.”

Sung Ryong Kwak retreated to a quiet corner to be alone and pray. He cried out, “Please give life to this lady once more. … Lord, we need a miracle.”

A passage of scripture flashed through his mind. “Jesus said, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he die, He shall live.’” Sung profoundly believed this truth and claimed the promise.

An intern who heard the prayer was so impressed by the plea that he persuaded the doctors to shock Lee one more time. To their dismay, her heart responded and she was alive. Lee had been resurrected.

However, the doctor warned she would be severely mentally handicapped by the carbon monoxide poisoning.  Lee was sixty-years old and brain damage was a virtual certainty. Maybe her revival wasn’t so positive after all.

Three days later, Sung was working in the church when the door opened. Deaconess Lee walked in. She was in perfect health; physically and mentally. Lee, too, had been resurrected. Easter had come again.

We do well to remember that death has been defeated and life reaches into tomorrow. No circumstance can impede that journey. That’s the meaning of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is for today and tomorrow.

And remember that miracle never ceases.

BATTLING THE BOOZE

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

BATTLING THE BOOZE

Americans are drowning in a culture of addiction. Everything from drugs to alcohol is sucking people under. The social and political tensions in the current society exacerbate the problem. Groups like Alcoholics Anonymous continue to help people who struggle fighting this problem. However, sometimes more is needed.

Here’s additional help.  Miraculous intervention can come through the faith of another person who walks with us through difficult days. Ron Adams (a fictitious name to protect the person’s identity) found that his wife Joyce’s faith made the difference in his recovery. Make no mistake about the fact that an addiction is frighteningly hard to break.

Ron and I became good friends after he gained control over his problem. One evening he told me his story.

During the years that he was an insurance salesman, Ron began drinking heavily. With an outgoing and engaging personality, he tried to cover his constant drinking, but the act failed. Joyce could see his blurry eyes, glazed look, and staggering gait when he came home in the evening. Her faith became the key that unlocked the sealed door in Ron’s mind.

Any possibility of faith in God was non-existent. As his drinking became even more compulsive, Ron had no idea where to turn because he didn’t believe in much of anything and his personal relationship with himself was crumbling by the hour.

However, Ron knew Joyce had a firm and consistent faith in God as well as exhibiting a personal relationship with her heavenly Father. The only thing keeping her staying with him was her unshakable faith. Could she have enough faith to carry them through? Ron believed she did. Desperate, he had no other place to turn. Ron made a decision to hold on to her faith.

            That was the turning point.

When Ron wanted to drink, he would talk it over with Joyce. He kept holding onto her faith as his means of staying sober. Joyce kept praying. As the days passed, he stayed away from the booze. Without medication, a therapy group, or outside help Ron found his way to sobriety and a new-found faith. He personally discovered a God who could thwart his compulsion.

Ron believed that he had received a miracle.

If you, or someone you know, can’t handle an addiction, here is a way to that miracle by allowing someone else’s faith to be your support and strength until you find your own. You can act like you believe until you truly do believe. When you struggle throughout the dark, call out to the God who created you. He would be delighted to bring you into the light and  help you  come whole.

            Remember miracles never cease!

WHEN THE DARKNESS DIED

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

WHEN THE DARKNESS DIED

Easter is the celebration of the amazing transforming miracle of light. The Light has shined into the darkness and the darkness has never overcome it. On Easter we remember how the darkness of death was dispelled.

No matter where you look in the world, you will find cemeteries. At the edge of every town, there is a graveyard and everyone knows that’s where they will eventually reside. We try to avoid the fact, but in the moments when we are most lucid, we recognize the inevitable. One day we will be there.

            And then Easter morning comes.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead proclaims that Light has shined into the darkness of the grave and the darkness has not over come it. Easter proclaims that every tomb is now filled with Light and the darkness cannot halt the penetrating glow.

            That’s the miracle of Easter.

Our worst fear has been conquered. Death has no power over us. Every dark night will give way to a new day of promise. When church choirs sing, “Christ the Lord is risen today,” they are singing to the past, the present, and the future, that no amount of darkness will ever stop the Light.

That is the greatest miracle of all.

            And that miracle never ceases.

DEALING WITH DEATH

DEALING WITH DEATH

Father Rick Thomas lived a fascinating life. A Jesuit, his concern for the poor, the disposed, and the needy produced a life filled with significant impact that helped a multitude of people. Recently I was reading Richard Dunstan’s book A Poor Priest for the Poor. Dunstan traces the path that wound through the depths of El Paso and across the river into Juarez, Mexico. You would find the story fascinating.

In 1978, the Charismatic Movement swept across America. One of the consequences was a conference on the Holy Spirit held at Notre Dame. Father Rick Thomas was touched by this outpouring. What followed was amazing.

A 47-year-old Juarez woman suddenly fainted. Everyone was upset although her condition didn’t seem to be much out of the ordinary.  One of the Daughters of Charity was also a registered nurse and resuscitation expert. When she returned to the house, she was immediately called on to make sure the woman’s pulse was okay. At that moment, the nurse realized that the women had stopped breathing and there were no vital signs.

Father Thomas had been taking a nap, but the nurse woke him in a panic. She knew disaster was unfolding. The nurse started mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. When  their was no response, she sat the woman up and performed the Heimlich maneuver. The nurse quickly realized their was another problem. As she was blowing into the women’s mouth to reach her lungs, the women’s cheeks were swelling, but no air was going to her lungs. This had happened with another patient and even though a doctor was working on the resuscitation, the patient died. The nurse knew the clock was ticking and time had virtually run out.

Through the impact of the Notre Dame conference, Father Thomas had learned about something called “the spirit of death.” Through the power of the Holy Spirit he had heard that we have power over that spirit. If the women’s time had not come, he needed to exercise that command.

Father Rick laid his hands on the woman and prayed, “Spirit of death, I cast you out in Jesus’ name.”

The woman abruptly took a sudden breath and began to regurgitate. Her breathing became normal. Father Rick took her by the hand and slowly she got to her feet. After a couple minutes of rest, she returned to her normal life. Father Rick never emphasized the event as he accepted it as a normal part of a Christian life simply following the example set by Jesus.

Do you have the capacity to dispel such “spirits of evil?” Sure you do. The Holy Spirit is the answer. Allow Him to work … and the results are always wonderful!

DOES PRAYER WORK?

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

DOES PRAYER WORK?

People often quip “I’m praying for you,” by which they mean “take an aspirin and you’ll feel better.” The idea is a polite way of saying “wish you the best.” However, anyone who follows miraculous events quickly discovers that prayer (Calling on God) is almost always involved in a divine intervention. Way too often we underestimate the power of intercession. It is not a cliché. This becomes particularly true when a large number of people agree and pray about our need.

            Why?

Think of yourself as a single strand of wire. You would be able to conduct only a small amount of current compared to a large cable. Many, many strands of wire wound together became capable of carrying a powerful surge of power. That’s just basic physics.  Prayer is like that force.

There’s another way prayer and electricity can be compared. In a sense we don’t know what electricity, lightning, or hydroelectricity actually is. We can tame the force and channel it, but it remains a surge of pure energy. Prayer is much the same. We’re not shouting at God, “Hey pay attention.” We are conveying an unseen and undefined reality that might be called “life.” We are applying the force of restorative stimulation to a need. When we pray, we are sending divine energy through our intercessions. Results follow.

We have just witnessed in the headlines this happening. As you may know, although I am a Protestant, Pope Francis asked me to be his Apostolic Representative for Christian Unity.  I follow his Holiness closely.

The world was shaken by the Pope’s illness during these past weeks. The doctors did not think he would survive. Archbishops around the world prepared to return to Rome for a Conclave. It didn’t happen.

Across the globe and in the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Square Piazza crowds of people gathered to pray for his recovery. Many Protestant Churches had special prayer sessions for his well-being. At one point his oxygen saturation dropped to a dangerous low 78. The Pope’s closest aides had tears in their eyes when the doctors asked his personal nurse for permission to proceed with a more aggressive treatment. But prayers had become a cable.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri said, “It was a miracle he left the hospital.”

Archbishops cancelled their travels. People rejoiced. Virtually no one expected Pope Francis to recover, but they prayed. The result? A miracle!

Think what might happen if all kinds of congregations came together to pray with one voice for everything from world peace to the healing of their sick. Their prayers would become a cable of caring conveying life and well-being. Why not give it a try?

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

A MIRACLE FOR YOU!

When was the first time I encountered a miracle? The memory lingers even though it’s been decades ago. Having survived a life-threatening illness, I began to study how divine interventions occurred and became convinced that anyone could pray for another person and results follow. At that time, the idea was considered “far out” by my fellow clergy. Nevertheless, I pressed ahead and announced we’d have a healing service.

That evening one of my dearest friends was present. June Watts had become like a second mother and worked with me. The week before a doctor diagnosed her ankles with severe deterioration. Within six months, he expected her to be in a wheelchair. She immediately started wearing large, ugly shoes.  That night as people were invited to come to the altar for healing prayer, June came forward and knelt. To my surprise, June suggested that we pray for a woman sitting in the congregation.

I was taken back. Here June was with a far more serious problem and she wanted us to pray for someone else? The very idea went all over me and empathy flashed through my entire being. I was going to pray for her need!

I didn’t know that I was practicing demanding faith. I wasn’t arrogantly praying for myself, but reaching out in accord with the scripture and forcefully calling on God to act. I was demonstrating confident conviction, a form of faith. My spirit and soul were saying. “Lord, right now!”

As I prayed, I began envisioning an image of June’s ankles being cleansed. The picture in my mind were so clear  and fascinating that I almost forgot where I was. Finally, I came down from my spiritual cloud and moved on to the next person to pray for them.

After the congregation had departed, I sunk down on the back pew and uttered, “My God, what has happened here?” The voice within said, “Your God has happened here!.”

A week later June called me. She had just returned from the doctor’s office. While he couldn’t explain how it happened, her ankles were completely normal. Forget the awful shoes. The ankles remained sound until the day she died.

The point? Miracles are always possible. You  may be wary of praying for someone. Don’t be. Reach out with demanding faith, confident conviction and trust God to do the rest. You may be surprised by how significant you can be by praying for someone else. Just take the first step in confidence!

THE OPERATION WAS INEVITABLE UNTIL

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

THE OPERATION WAS INEVITABLE UNTIL…

Sure, there are quacks around and charlatans that “fake” the intervention of God. At the same time, gifted believers can provide wonderful results.  The first time I attended a Kathryn Kulman service I had no idea what to expect. By the time I left two and a half hours later, I was overwhelmed. I realized empowered people were endowed with a capacity to bring healing results.

Patricia Robinson discovered the same by accident. An x-ray on her left knee revealed osteoarthritis. The cartilage had worn away along with bone spurs creating pain. She found it hard to accept this result and went for a second opinion. An Orthopedic surgeon at Orthopedic Consultants in Minneapolis confirmed the earlier diagnosis. Pat needed knee replacement. Surgery was scheduled.

She dreaded the idea. As Pat studied the preparation book given by the surgeon, Pat also started praying… praying hard. From her study of the Bible, she embraced her heavenly Father as Jehovah Rapha, her healer.

Someone noticed that a healing crusade was coming to the Target Center in Minneapolis. Other friends from her church were going. Couldn’t hurt anything. Why not?

When Pat and her husband arrived, the building was already crowded and they had to sit in the balcony. They argued with the usher that they needed to be down front because of her problem. The usher assured them “when the anointing comes, you’ll get it right in your chair.” They had no choice but to settle in.

People shared testimonies. The evangelist preached and then interceded for people lined up before him. Pat watched as people were decisively healed.

Near the end of the service, the evangelist suddenly looked up in the balcony. “Someone up there is scheduled for surgery next week.” He pointed to where Pat was sitting. “Cancel your surgery. You are healed.”

Pat could hardly believe her ears. Was it her? Seemed to be, but was it too good to be true? By the time they arrived home, she had her answer. She could run up and down the stairs easily and with no pain. She was healed!

When she called to halt surgery, Pat shared her experience with an amazed doctor.  Now years later, Pat remains healed. The trip to the crusade was everything she needed. She had a miracle.

The next time such a crusade comes to your town investigate and if the reports hold up, don’t be afraid to attend and reach out. Could be your opportunity to join Pat in praising Jehovah Rapha.

DEATH DIDN’T STOP RUTH

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

DEATH DIDN’T STOP RUTH

With her bright red-hair and rambunctious style, Ruth Eaton was one of the most delightful persons I’ve ever known. Ruth was always on the go. Visiting a friend in a nursing home, 86 year-old Ruth discovered that many of these “old” people had no one left who knew anything about them or cared for them. She simply couldn’t let this be! The work she began on their behalf never stopped until Ruth died at age 93.

Ruth Eaton made it her job to find a gift for every lonely person in a nursing home in Oklahoma City. She watched for specials in the newspaper and came up with everything from women’s socks to men’s underwear. Her living room was piled high with boxes and wrapping paper for her “best buys” being prepared for delivery on Christmas Eve.

Ruth’s only daughter had died at age 44. I had the service for her and knew that the death had nearly killed Ruth. At that time, I couldn’t fully comprehend how the affect lingered for years. Only after the death of my oldest son did I realize how difficult it had been to deal with the death of a child. Ruth didn’t speak of her experience often, but it was always there.

On this particular Friday, I told my secretary not to let anyone in or any phone calls get through until I had my sermon completed. Thirty minutes later, I could hear Ruth raising a ruckus. “I don’t care what he said!” she yelled at the secretary. “I demand to speak with him NOW!” And in came Ruth.

She had been sitting on her couch wrapping presents when she began to think about her beloved daughter and wondered where she was today. At the same time, Ruth thought about her mother who had died many decades earlier. The remembrance of these two important and significant persons always remained important to her.

Ruth abruptly had the strangest feeling. She looked down at the end of the couch and there stood her mother and daughter. Though they had been many years apart in age, they now both looked exactly the same age at about 25. Ruth stared in amazement. Mother and daughter smiled back at her, reflecting their joy at what she was doing. The three of them seemed to communicate telepathically, sharing their love and devotion.

Ruth swallowed hard and looked away. When she looked again, they were gone. For a long time, Ruth sat there in astonishment, trying to grasp what she had experienced. Whatever else Ruth might have been uncertain about, there was no question in her mind, but that she had been visited by her deceased mother and her daughter.

That’s when Ruth came to my office.

What did her encounter mean? Ruth was certain that her view of eternity had been assured. Think about it.

            Remember… miracles never cease.
