A Miracle in a Prison?

Could a miracle happen in the midst of all of the upheaval exploding today? Is it possible that a divine intervention might happen in today’s bizarre struggles? One certainly occurred in Airway Heights Correctional Facility in Spokane, Washington. 

Tom Bloom had been serving time when he turned his life over to God and began receiving whatever his heavenly Father gave him to do. In the prison recreation day room, Tom met Mario. During their conversation, Mario began relating his experiences.  Earlier he had been in a medium security camp. As the story unfolded, Mario talked about needing an operation on his lungs because they were filling with fluid. He commented, “Without this operation I’ll drown… sitting right here.”

            After supper Tom and Mario shared more of his story. He had come to America from Mexico with his girlfriend in a stolen car. Mario had killed a man still claiming it was self-defense. Tom had heard similar stories before and didn’t take it seriously.

            Back in his cell, Tom always prayed fervently before turning in for the night. As he prayed, Tom abruptly heard the voice of God. I want you to pray with Mario and lay hands on him that I might heal him. Tom was startled!

            Being in prison, Tom was reluctant to share his spiritual journey much less relating he had received a message from God. The prisoners would be certain he was crazy. Maybe it was all a mistake.  However, the following day when he attended a chapel service, Tom was given another confirmation. He had to approach Mario.

            The Mexican was startled. “Amigo, you want me to pray with you and you gonna lay hands on me?” Mario seemed more surprised than doubtful, but he agreed.

            Nearly a month later, Mario was called in for his regular physical examination. After the doctor thoroughly checked him, Mario returned. “Tommy, they couldn’t find anything wrong with my lungs. Nothing, man. Like there was never anything wrong with my lungs.”

            Because the results were so unusual, Mario was called back for a CAT scan. The positive result was the same. The doctors were mystified. Tom Blossom was gratified. Mario was healed.

            Years later after he was released, Tom got a letter. Mario was now allowing God to direct his life. He was more than just healed. A miracle indeed.

            Ever have an impulse to pray for someone, but thought you weren’t gifted enough, special enough, equipped enough, but still knew you should pray? Didn’t think you could be part of a miracle? Just remember Tom Blossom and don’t hesitate.

THE OPERATION WAS INEVITABLE UNTIL…

            Sure, there are quacks around and charlatans that “fake” the intervention of God. At the same time, gifted believers can provide wonderful results.  The first time I attended a Kathryn Kulman service I had no idea what to expect. By the time I left two and a half hours later, I was overwhelmed. I realized empowered people were endowed with a capacity to bring healing results.

            Patricia Robinson discovered the same by accident. An x-ray on her left knee revealed osteoarthritis. The cartilage had worn away along with bone spurs creating pain. She found it hard to accept this result and went for a second opinion. An Orthopedic surgeon at Orthopedic Consultants in Minneapolis confirmed the earlier diagnosis. Pat needed knee replacement. Surgery was scheduled.

            She dreaded the idea. As Pat studied the preparation book given by the surgeon, Pat also started praying… praying hard. From her study of the Bible, she embraced her heavenly Father as Jehovah Rapha, her healer.

            Someone noticed that a healing crusade was coming to the Target Center in Minneapolis. Other friends from her church were going. Couldn’t hurt anything. Why not?    

            When Pat and her husband arrived, the building was already crowded and they had to sit in the balcony. They argued with the usher that they needed to be down front because of her problem. The usher assured them “when the anointing comes, you’ll get it right in your chair.” They had no choice but to settle in.

            People shared testimonies. The evangelist preached and then interceded for people lined up before him. Pat watched as people were decisively healed.

            Near the end of the service, the evangelist suddenly looked up in the balcony. “Someone up there is scheduled for surgery next week.” He pointed to where Pat was sitting. “Cancel your surgery. You are healed.”

            Pat could hardly believe her ears. Was it her? Seemed to be, but was it too good to be true? By the time they arrived home, she had her answer. She could run up and down the stairs easily and with no pain. She was healed!

            When she called to halt surgery, Pat shared her experience with an amazed doctor.  Now years later, Pat remains healed. The trip to the crusade was everything she needed. She had a miracle.

            The next time such a crusade comes to your town investigate and if the reports hold up, don’t be afraid to attend and reach out. Could be your opportunity to join Pat in praising Jehovah Rapha.

RUSHING TO DEATH WHEN…

            Everyone is concerned with the terrible war raging in the Gaza Strip. Regardless of your political persuasion, what is and has happened is heart breaking. Could anything good come out of this chaos? Doesn’t seem so.

            And yet the love of God is not bound. Here’s an example of how divine concern is still at work in the Holy Land.  For anonymity sake, we’ll call the man I’m talking about Omar Habibi. Here’s what happened to Omar.

            Because he was a Palestinian, Omar grew up in a refugee camp. The hardship had turned him into a bitter enemy of Israel. He felt the Jews had kicked him out of a normal life and robbed him of happiness. Consequently, his goal in life had become to kill as many Jews as possible. Bitterness motivated his every thought.  Omar wanted to be part of some group that would fight against the Jews. He made contact with people who worked with Hamas and set out to join the terrorist group.

            Omar walked down the narrow, winding streets of Jerusalem on his way to a secret rendezvous when abruptly a man in a white robe appeared in front of him. The figure pointed at him and said, “Omar, this is not the life I have planned for you. Turn around. Go home. I have another plan for you.”

            Mystified, Omar staggered home in a daze. He couldn’t shake off the experience. Later that day Omar saw a new tenant moving in across the hall from him and heard the man was a Christian. Omar knew nothing about Jesus, but had to know more about what happened to him out there on the street. Because of his encounter, he asked the Christian what the experience might mean. The new friend took him to the scriptures and helped him understand that he had been confronted by the Jesus who physically walked the earth 2,000 years ago and now returned spiritually to help people. Omar had been confronted by a miracle.

            Omar was astounded. He could not deny what he had seen in the street. In a way that he could not fully comprehend or explain, Omar had met the risen Christ. The young man changed his mind and his destiny. Today Omar is an underground church planter.

           Easter continues and this is another one of many stories for the season. Of all the miracle experiences I have encountered, resurrection stories remain at the top of the list. Reach out to the risen Christ and you too can become part of the story.

EMPTINESS HURTS WHEN

            Sometimes people have the form of faith but the content is empty. Nothing ever seems to happen for them. They need the resurrection of their withered faith. Then the rest will follow. Father Richard Paullissen discovered the difference.

            As a priest, he could say a Mass in 12 minutes flat. He had held retreats lasting for three days and never mentioned God once.  All was purely machinical. Rote.

 Sound strange? Actually, the problem is rather common. As a Protestant, I’ve met many clergy who could reel off theological ideas like a clockmaker explaining how a clock works, but their personal faith was as dead as the clock. They majored in ideas, but had no idea for how to bring the content to life.

            Father Richard Paullissen went to a retreat at a Benedictine Monastery in Pecos, New Mexico. I know the spiritual center well as I lived there for a period of time. Father Paullissen came to a “Life in the Spirit” seminar, aware of his own need. Around 55 people attended, including seven Presbyterians and three priests. Abbott David Garrets always prayed over the gatherings.

            I know well how powerful that can be. The Abbot was my Spiritual Director for many years. A brilliant student, Abbot David was a man that the Holy Spirit lived in and filled with divine gifts. However, when the Abbot prayed for Father Paullissen nothing seemed to happen.    

            A long-haired boy of around eleven years of age stood up.  Remembering the passage in Matthew 18:3, “unless you change and become like little children you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven,” Father Richard asked the boy to pray for him. The priest felt nothing.

            Feeling empty, Fr. Richard thought he had been passed over and was ready to give up when he glanced at a New Testament beside him. The pages had fallen open to passages he had routinely studied for eight years but suddenly sprang to life before his eyes. Fr. Richard read, “Why do you search for the living among the dead?”

            The word “living” exploded in his mind. The concept rang through his entire body. Fr. Richard realized he had been worshipping a dead God, a history book God. He had completely missed the living Christ!

            As the realization sunk in, Fr. Richard sensed a presence sitting next to him. He quietly uttered, “Jesus.” The Lord Jesus Christ came into his life. Father Richard was never the same again.

            And you? Been worshipping only an “idea?” Meeting the Master makes all the difference. Once you’ve crossed the threshold, everything changes. Is that a miracle? Sure. Once it happens, you’ll remember the moment as the greatest miracle in your life.

HE HAD NO HOPE OF SURVIVAL UNTI…

            A -9o degree with snow everywhere is bad enough but people in Northern Michigan expect winters to be like that. Scott Peterson and his wife Diane learned early that you have to help anyone who gets stranded because a delay can turn a problem in to a disaster. Stopping to help was simply second nature to him.

            On this particular winter day, a car had spun out on the icy road causing the driver to lose control and veer into a ditch. Scott started helping the driver work his way out of the problem. At that moment, a second car hit the same ice and hurled toward the same ditch. Scott was pinned between the two vehicles!

            Severely injured, Scott’s blood went everywhere. Everyone could see that he was losing blood at a frightening pace and could kill him. An ambulance rushed him to the nearest hospital in hopes of stabilizing his condition. As the doctors rushed to his assistance, they quickly discovered that the femoral artery had been severed. This critical vein carried blood to the lower half of Scott’s body.

            Given thirty-two units of blood, the doctors told the family that Scott only had twenty-four hours to live. The family prayed with everything they had in them.

            Scott was life-flighted to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Operation after operation were performed. Both his leg and life looked hopeless. With the massive amount of lost blood and tissue damage, Scott was still not expected to live. The doctors advised Diane that the best hope would be an amputation.

            Diane had a different frame of mind. She had read Andrew Womack’s Harnessing Your Emotions, Christian Survival Kit that proclaims God’s unconditional love. Diane had learned that God’s grace was always sufficient. Even when she didn’t have the strength or patience, she had learned that God’s grace would provide had she lacked. Diane hung on.

            Six days later Scott regained consciousness. Unfortunately, the next day during a surgery, he aspirated. Once again, Diane was told there was no hope of recovery. He was in a coma for another nine days.

            But where was Scott?

            When he became conscious again, Scott reported that during the comma, he had been in the presence of the Lord. He said, “When I saw Him, I realized how much he loves me. I was very happy to see him, but he was even happier to see me. I knew I was totally accepted.”

            Is that not amazing?’ 

            The realization during the comma helped speed up Scott’s recovery. Today, he walks on two healthy legs. The doctors were amazed.

            Just a reminder to never doubt the unconditional love of God. Don’t forget. Miracles never cease!

SHE DIDN’T BELIEVE UNTIL …

            Context can certainly make the difference. Many, many people have no expectation that God cares. Once they cross that line, often even to their surprise, things happen. Let’s add another element. Sometimes divine interventions take time. We must remember that no response is a divine delay for reasons that often we cannot grasp. Don’t doubt when you have to wait. Cassaundra Siegersma’s experience is an example.

            Cassundra had grown up with some erroneous ideas about how the Holy Spirit intervenes. Having been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, she struggled with sleep apnea, asthma, and fibromyalgia. If that wasn’t enough, two herniated disks resulted in two back surgeries. These problems caused her to sleep all day and not at night. Trying to make ends meet, her husband worked three jobs to pay for Cassandra’s problems, but bankruptcy loomed before them.

            Needing a break, Cassandra accepted an invitation to attend a spiritual conference in Colorado Springs. She came with some hesitancy about the speaker but quickly recognized that the teacher basically quoted the Bible. Cassandra couldn’t argue with that! Since scripture was true, what she was hearing had to be true. Finally, Cassandra went forward to have intercessors pray over her problems.

            She returned to the hotel room and made a definite decision to trust that the Holy Spirit had done something definite in her life. Cassandra would believe regardless of what followed.

Two weeks later her resolution proved true.

            As she was trying to sleep, Cassandra felt a sensation on her toes. She thought her husband probably wanted her to take him to work but when she looked no one was there. She had received a touch from God. Cassandra knew the sensation was real. Within five minutes she was asleep better than she had in years.

            When she awoke, Cassandra knew she was in a new place. She had received a gift and believed God wants everyone to have the same. Today Cassandra proclaims no matter what the problem might be, the Cross is the answer. What happened on the Cross is bigger than any problem we could ever have.

            Today she declares, “Let God be your refuge and your fortress, your delivery, and a very present help in time of need. He will meet you wherever you are.”

            Cassandra lives in this context. You might pause and give some thought about the context that surrounds you. One of anticipating God to act on your behalf? One of expectancy? Sometimes you have to wait? No problem. Cassandra will tell you about the difference your expectations can make. Faith opens to door  to the Divine context.

HE HAD ONE PERCENT CHANCE TO LIVE BUT…

            Miracles sometimes come instantly, sometimes gradually, and sometime over a much longer period of time, but prayer seems to have everything to do with the pace. Prayer is certainly not waking God up, but rather accessing the holy power that waits to come from eternity. As people pray… and continue to pray …like flowers gradually coming up in the Spring … slowly but surely fruition unfolds. This past week the Reynold family told me their story of what happened to them.

            Dan Reynolds was playing catcher in a softball game when the hard, flying ball struck him square in the chest near where his heart was located.  While Dan lay unconscious, players and observers ran to help. Although he wasn’t breathing, a nurse from the stands insisted they must pump his chest and keep him breathing until an ambulance arrived to take him to Texas Presbyterian Hospital. For eight days, Dan Reynolds lay in ICU unconscious. Finally, surgery inserted a metal plate. However, the doctor came out shaking his head and looking grim. “At best, Dan has a one percent chance of survival.”

            Janet was told she would probably have to pull the plug. Because of the injury, the doctors suggested a hole would have to be cut in his stomach to feed him through a tube for as long as he lived. His wife Janet had been praying in faith and did not stop. She called on the people in Central Church, Plano, Texas to join her. To the surprise of the surgeon, Dan did not die.  After eight days, he surprised them by wiggling his toes. Janet kept praying.

            Because of the injury, Dan had to write on a white board to communicate. When he was taken to Baylor Rehabilitation, the staff had reservations about his ability to endure. Janet kept praying. Central Church kept praying. What the medical community said couldn’t happen, did. Dan kept making progress. Dan said to me, “Why didn’t I die? Thousands of people continued to pray in faith for me.”

            From the beginning, there had been a concern that Dan Reynolds’ mind would be gone if he ever woke up at all. Of course, that prognosis was given before Janet and the congregation at Central Church began praying. When he finally opened his eyes, Dan’s mind was perfect.

            His response? “Thanks to God and your prayers my current status is that I am with a walking stick and have gone as far as ¾ of a mile. I climb stairs … and am slowly developing stamina and strength.”

            Dan Reynolds had a l-o-o-n-g stretched miracle and Janet never quit praying. Note: praying by and with faith. The foregoing is only a sample of the divine interventions that happened along the way. But his story makes the point: Miracles never cease!

THE ATTACKS COULDN’T BE STOPPED UNTIL…

            Ever wonder where attacks by the virus that infected you came from? They are certainly invisible. You can’t see Covid or the flue dropping in on you. Viruses seem to originate out of nowhere. At the risk of sounding primitive or from a medieval world, our work in Africa has raised questions about where some illnesses and pains originate. Could it be that in addition to unseen bacteria and virus, there might be an additional cause? An evil source?

            This past week my wife and I were having supper with our friends Charlie and Diana Waters. As we discussed how the intervention of the Holy Spirit occurs, Diana shared her personal experience. A deeply spiritual person, she had been dealing with multiple areas of pain across her body for over two years. Nothing had brought relief.

            Diana read a book by Rebecca Brown, M.D., entitled Came to Set Captives Free. While a medical doctor, the author had discovered an unexpected source of pain and relief by studying the Bible.  Dr. Brown found the biblical injunction to anoint with oil and pray over a physical problem did have powerful potential. Diana was impressed and felt she should try the same.

            Retiring to her bathroom, Diana brought in a bottle of olive oil and began to pray. As Dr. Brown described, she began anointing her arms, her back, her legs, all over her body where it hurt with the olive oil as she prayed. Finally, Diana decided she had covered every painful area, but she was dripping with oil. The only logical next step was to take a shower and get the oil off.

            As she started to step in the shower, she realized one of the major pains had vanished. As the water ran down, other sore areas simply disappeared. Diana kept discovering additional areas of discomfort were vanishing. Within five minutes, the struggle of the last two years was completely gone. … And those pains never came back!

            Diana Waters is a Clinical Psychologist and understands how the mind works. She is not naïve or uninformed. Her healing was far beyond any mental capacity that she might exercise. Being faithful to scripture, anointing with oil, and praying had liberated her from excruciating pain.

            Charlie came home later in the day. When he walked in the bedroom, he immediately sensed  the fragrance of roses. The distinct scent of roses remained even though there were none in the house. A sure and unusual signature of the visitation of the Divine.

            James 5:14 admonishes the first Christians to “anoint with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord raise him up.”  Is that true? Diana demonstrates it is. Could this be true for you? Absolutely.
