MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

DEATH DIDN’T STOP RUTH

With her bright red-hair and rambunctious style, Ruth Eaton was one of the most delightful persons I’ve ever known. Ruth was always on the go. Visiting a friend in a nursing home, 86 year-old Ruth discovered that many of these “old” people had no one left who knew anything about them or cared for them. She simply couldn’t let this be! The work she began on their behalf never stopped until Ruth died at age 93.

Ruth Eaton made it her job to find a gift for every lonely person in a nursing home in Oklahoma City. She watched for specials in the newspaper and came up with everything from women’s socks to men’s underwear. Her living room was piled high with boxes and wrapping paper for her “best buys” being prepared for delivery on Christmas Eve.

Ruth’s only daughter had died at age 44. I had the service for her and knew that the death had nearly killed Ruth. At that time, I couldn’t fully comprehend how the affect lingered for years. Only after the death of my oldest son did I realize how difficult it had been to deal with the death of a child. Ruth didn’t speak of her experience often, but it was always there.

On this particular Friday, I told my secretary not to let anyone in or any phone calls get through until I had my sermon completed. Thirty minutes later, I could hear Ruth raising a ruckus. “I don’t care what he said!” she yelled at the secretary. “I demand to speak with him NOW!” And in came Ruth.

She had been sitting on her couch wrapping presents when she began to think about her beloved daughter and wondered where she was today. At the same time, Ruth thought about her mother who had died many decades earlier. The remembrance of these two important and significant persons always remained important to her.

Ruth abruptly had the strangest feeling. She looked down at the end of the couch and there stood her mother and daughter. Though they had been many years apart in age, they now both looked exactly the same age at about 25. Ruth stared in amazement. Mother and daughter smiled back at her, reflecting their joy at what she was doing. The three of them seemed to communicate telepathically, sharing their love and devotion.

Ruth swallowed hard and looked away. When she looked again, they were gone. For a long time, Ruth sat there in astonishment, trying to grasp what she had experienced. Whatever else Ruth might have been uncertain about, there was no question in her mind, but that she had been visited by her deceased mother and her daughter.

That’s when Ruth came to my office.

What did her encounter mean? Ruth was certain that her view of eternity had been assured. Think about it.

BREAKTHROUGH!

Do we have a part to play in divine interventions? The answer is yes and no. Sometimes the Holy Spirit moves with no initiation from us. At other times we must position ourselves to be receptive. Sometimes even when we have been resistant, we must reposition ourselves. Alice Miller’s experience was like that.

I was sitting in my office on a Saturday morning when a young woman was abruptly standing in the doorway. Her pained expression said more than any words could. Alice Miller told me this was her last stop before she committed suicide.

Alice’s husband was a doctor and they had several children. Unfortunately, he wanted out of the marriage to pursue a nurse. She had been blindsided and saw no alternative but to take her life. I asked her to sit down. Since she was certain that she was going to do herself in, I suggested she had nothing to lose by talking a little longer.

I listened as she described her family and thought that could prevent a rash action. It didn’t. I turned to her faith. She had none.

Alice told me that she and her doctor husband believed only in science. They had decided there was nothing else. She really didn’t know why she was even talking to me since she couldn’t accept any of my biblical ideas. Obviously, the philosophical and theological arguments I learned in seminary wouldn’t work. But I had a suggestion. Go home and find a solitary room where the children couldn’t bother her. Close your eyes and start talking as if there is a God standing across from you and listening to everything you are saying. Use your imagination. What did she have to lose if she was going to commit suicide any way? Since she did believe in science, try a spiritual scientific experiment.

The suicide was delayed. I walked her back to her car and told her to call me about the results. A shotgun was laying in the front seat.

A week later Alice called. She was mystified because something, maybe someone, seemed to be in that empty room with her. I encouraged her to meditate further, pour out her need, open her mind AND heart to the possibility that the Almighty God loved her and wanted to communicate that love.

A few days later, Alice called with emotion in her voice. New hope and assurance had been given to her life. The Holy Spirit was definitely working in and with her. Forget about suicide.

Alice Miller did her part. God did his part. She went on to rebuild her life. You might consider trying that same exercise. Get alone. Ask the Holy Spirit to come to you and communicate. Open your mind and emotions to receive the working of God. Just might be the most miraculous thing you’ve ever done.

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

            DISASTER OR

The man screamed, “I’m going to rape you and dump you in a field. If you want to live, do as I say!” His car shot out of garage and down Monterey Boulevard.  Jenny had immigrated from China and was terrified.

She had taken a job as a waitress when the attacker found her.  When she reached for the car door, the man screamed, “You can’t open it, It’s an automatic lock.” She was desperate.

The woman had been working two jobs and struggling to learn English. She painfully missed her family so far away across the ocean. The difficulties were reflected in her face. A worn, tired countenance prevailed day and night. As she was serving a young woman, the lady looked up and said, “You seem unhappy. My dear, ought to try prayer. It works.”

In China, the Communist Party had taught her that religious people were weak and fearful, mental cripples who believed in fairy tales. She had grown up during the Cultural Revolution and been indoctrinated with atheistic philosophy. Like Karl Marx, she believed religion was an opiate, a drug and nothing more

Abducted by a madman speeding down the highway and about to be attacked or murdered, those political ideas were irrelevant.  She needed a powerful Greater Being who could help her in this terrifying situation. Jenny made a decision to give prayer a try. She closed her eyes and silently cried out, “Dear God, if you exist, please help me.” Jenny inwardly desperately prayed. To her surprise, she felt a calm strength enter her body.

Suddenly, the car lurched and the tires squealed. The driver had abruptly swerved off the interstate highway into a small town. The evening street lights had come on. Jenny kept praying, “Please God, give me strength.”

When they stopped at an intersection, she saw a police officer across the street with the car’s red and blue lights flashing. This was her moment of truth. Filled with new spiritual strength, she pulled on the door handle, knowing it wouldn’t open.  It did. The attacker tried to grab her arm, but she jumped out of the car and ran toward the officer.

The man shot down the street, but an hour later the police apprehended him.

Jenny knew a divine power had saved her life. Doubts from the past blew away like dust. She discovered the most important things in life -kindness, love, faith- couldn’t be found in a test tube. The more she aligned herself with the power of God, the better her life became.

Our heavenly Father is always there. Don’t wait for a possible disaster to find out. Can praying make a difference right now? Jenny will tell you that it absolutely does. Her life proves the fact.

AWAKENED TO THE LIGHT

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

            AWAKENED TO THE LIGHT

Miracles come in all shapes and sizes. Often the divine touch comes in a way that is unexpected. Elaine Stephenson had just such an experience.

On February 3, 2021, Elaine was finished with her usual early morning two hours of “layered” prayer. Still battling an illness, something unusual started to appear.  A deeply personal vision began to emerge.

Elaine began picturing her body and ordering all the negatives to leave every part of her. She prayed for Jesus to fill every cell with his healing water followed by his healing touch. Next, she asked for his healing light to surge in.  Elaine began asking for the prayers of the many people who prayed for her need to flow through her body. As the prayer time came to an end, she gave thanks and praise to Jesus for hearing her prayers.

Almost as an afterthought, Elaine asked, “…Jesus, would you take my sack with you when you go.” She was referring to a hideous, misshaped roll of fat that had formed across her lower abdomen. While struggling with her illness, Elaine had lost a substantial amount of weight in a short period of time. The result had created the bulge around her waist. Elaine had barely gotten those words out of her mouth when she sensed a change.

Directly in front of her, she envisioned a circle with a line forming in the center, almost like a stick figure being drawn. As the line continued to extend, it started making a letter. In the center of the circle the bold capital letters formed making a giant “I AM.” She immediately thought that Jesus was saying “I AM with you.” Elaine knew her prayers had been answered. Tears began to run down her cheeks.

( Exodus 3:13-14 relates that Moses discovered the name of God to be in Hebrew YHWH or  I AM).

The letter of the I AM glowed boldly across her dark room. Each letter was printed on a shape like a child’s building block. The colors glowed with an other worldly magnificence.  Long after the image fade, the letters were etched in her mind. She was healed.

Finally, Elaine woke her husband and related the experience. He too was amazed. They agreed her experience must be shared with others. Oh by the way. the sagging sack around her waist was gone.

A MYSTERY STORY

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view.
An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev.
Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

A MYSTERY STORY

Mystery is one of the important concepts that our time has lost. This theological
idea tells us that there is a limit in our everyday experience for explaining the miraculous.
God is beyond logic. These events are beyond our grasp. Put it another way, the working
of God is never fully understood, explainable nor fits our expectations. We can only
embrace the Divine expressions and receive the results whether we grasp them or not.
This fact is most assuredly true of healing. Why does one person receive a touch
and not someone else? Why does the miracle come one time and not another? Sorry. The
answers can only be a mystery that we can’t explain but only receive.

Take the case of Kathy Smith. (an anonymity for security sake) She fell down a
flight of stairs and injured her spine. Unfortunately, Kathy waited three months before
seeking medical attention. When she finally did, the treatment was improper. A number
of circumstances followed that only made the condition worse. Finally, Kathy was given
a prognosis that she would end up in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. The 27 tablets
she took daily did not ease the pain. Kathy was struggling.

At a retreat, the leader told her that they would be praying particularly for her for
the renewal of every nerve in her back and along her spinal column. On the fourth day,
Kathy realized she hadn’t forgiven a number of people who had not believed her when
she talked about her injury. She confessed her resentment to the leader of the retreat and
released hostility by forgiving.

During the worship service that followed, Kathy felt a jerk on her neck like a
chiropractor had worked on her. For two years, she had not been able to move her head
from side to side, but now she could. As the service conditioned and the leader prayed for
her, Kathy began to see white electric globes lighting up one after the other that
fascinated her as the leader continued to pray.

Not until she sat down in a regular straight back chair with no pain, did Kathy
fully grasp that her back had been healed. That night she couldn’t sleep because of the
sensations running through her legs. The next morning, Kathy got out of bed only to
discover that she didn’t need her glasses. Her eyes had been healed as well.

The leader helped her understand the gentleness of the Lord in healing her by
degrees. An instant healing would have totally overpowered her. God had been
progressive with her. Can any of this be explained? Sorry. No.

The challenge for us is to surrender to the unseen hand of God and not worry
about when and where He will move. Put the book on logic aside. It doesn’t work with
divine expressions. We can rejoice because He is with us, seen or unseen. We must learn
to receive whatever the hand of God provides. Just be receptive. Regardless.
Remember. Miracles never cease.

EVIL HASN’T TAKEN A VACATION

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

EVIL HASN’T TAKEN A VACATION

By the way, if you haven’t noticed, Evil has NOT taken a vacation. You can’t turn on your TV without getting a dose of deception, lying, false communication, and manipulation at all levels. You might have written it all off as biased thinking, egotism, or self-promotion. No problem there except that isn’t all there is to the quandary.

            Evil is plowing ahead.

The first step forward is to seek a spiritual answer to a spiritual problem. Call the problem what it is. Second, dig deeper. Don’t take a surface answer, look at what is working beneath. Third, when truth is being distorted, say so. Here’s an example of combatting Evil.

Mary (used for anonymity sake) began acting strangely, shouting lies and was brought to the church for help. Her husband, father, and mother took Mary to the pastor’s office where she began throwing a tantrum and tearing at her clothing, ripping them apart. The pastor found himself in the midst of utter chaos.

The mother pulled him out of the room and explained their daughter had taken on strange sexual behavior. They weren’t sure what to do when Mary became explicit about her behavior. Her history revealed a growing infatuation with Mary’s brother-in-law. Letters had been exchanged between the two that carried sexual overtones. As she sat in the pastor’s office, Mary still had one such letter in her purse.

Returning to his office, the pastor confronted Mary about the letters. After ten minutes of arguing, she took out the letter and the pastor tore it apart and dropped the paper in the wastepaper basket. The pastor asked everyone in the room to start praying for Alice and he laid his hands on her shoulders and prayed to cast out evil. While they prayed, Mary became increasingly limp and finally collapsed.

As Mary started recovering, she became fully aware of her previous behavior and where she was. Mary began thanking God that he had set her free. The erratic behavior was gone and her personality was fully restored. She was one example of release from evil. Her family believed a miracle had occurred.

In today’s world, we need a healing of our eyes to see the truth waiting behind the deceptions. Ask yourself if Evil is at work! Then seek God’s release from the impact.

Some may call this approach superstition, naïve, reactionary, but without any answer of their own for confronting and defeating Evil. The sophistication of our time has not replaced the insight from 2,000 years ago. Deal with Evil as Evil and allow the hand of God to work. Miraculous results will follow.

MIRACLE AT THE END OF A COUCH

MIRACLE AT THE END OF A COUCH

With her bright red-hair and rambunctious style, elderly Ruth Eaton was one of the most delightful persons I’ve ever known. READY TO DIE? GUESS WHAT?

Blog 374

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

READY TO DIE? GUESS WHAT?

The most miraculous conversations always come from people who have had near-death experiences. Over the years, I have talked with many people who had such an encounter. For example, in 1987, Dawn Gillott underwent emergency surgery in an intensive care unit. She suddenly felt herself floating above her body and going down a tunnel into an open field. Sitting on a park bench, she found her grandfather who had died seven years earlier and he inquired about her family. The peace Dawn felt made her want to stay forever, but he insisted she must return for her children’s sake. Before she could complete the conversation, Dawn was back in the I.C.U. in recovery, living in this world.

How do we understand these reports? Dr. Peter Fenwick, a British neuro-psychiatrist and graduate from the University of Cambridge, spent a life time studying these experiences. He confronted his colleagues who considered near-death events to be symptoms of anoxia, a lack of oxygen to the brain. Dr. Fenwick also challenged academics who considered these encounters as nothing more than hallucinations.

Dr. Fenwick believed consciousness exists beyond death and studied the matter scientifically. He found 50 percent of those he studied reported traveling down a tunnel while 72 percent saw a brilliant light. In the experiences he investigated, Dr. Fenwick found 40 percent met someone they had previously known. A striking 72 percent reported making a decision to return to life and came back. These similarities cannot be accidental.

In his book detailing his research, The Truth in the Light, he shares the conclusions he found from over 2,000 letters people sent him.

Dr. Fenwick concluded, “Once you’ve had this experience, you are changed, whether you like it or not.” His conclusion was that the body dies, but not the individual person. When asked about his own death, the psychiatrist said, “Actually, I’m looking forward to it.”

The miraculous may be nearer than you think! While much about the near-death experiences remains unknown, we have been given certainty about where eternal life is found. Jesus taught, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” The apostle John wrote, “this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his son. (I John 10:11)  That’s a sure promise!
