WAS IT A COINCIDENCE OR…

            Would you consider it a miracle if you heard God speak to you? Even the idea would be considered delusional by most of society. And yet the woods are full of stories of exactly this happening. The sound doesn’t resonate with the ear drum but comes through like a thought drifting into the mind.  I have a file full of stories about people driving down the street when a totally unexpected idea flashed through their thoughts and it turned out to have a divine origin.

            And what about circumstances? Could they be an expression of a divine intervention? Could “something” just happen and turn out to be the hand of God at work? Let me give you an example.

            Roger E. Olson, Ph.D grew up in a Christian home and was a professor at a major seminary and is an ardent Evangelical. Following a medical examination, Roger Olson returned home troubled and discouraged that he might be facing serious surgery.

            As he wrestled with the worry, the words of an old hymn kept running through his mind. Even though he hadn’t heard the hymn since childhood, the words kept running through his mind. Because the hymn was ancient, he didn’t feel it could be found. Still the words kept running through his mind like a broken record providing background noise to his worries. They seemed to ring with reassurance.

            On Sunday Dr. Olson and his wife went to a worship service in their local church. The designated opening hymn was #220, Crown Him with Many Crowns. He reached for the hymnal and turned to page #220 but it wasn’t what was announced. To his shock, it was the exact hymn he thought of all week and couldn’t find. He looked again. Roger Olson wasn’t holding the church’s hymnal. The book had come from a completely different church and was the only one of that kind in the entire church. It just happened to be there in front of him, the only one in the entire building?

            Coincidence or confirmation?

            Don’t expect the miraculous always to be dramatic and spectacular. Sometimes the most amazing demonstrations happen with the simplest of circumstances. Keep your ears open. A new song just might be waiting for you.

EMPTINESS HURTS WHEN

            Sometimes people have the form of faith but the content is empty. Nothing ever seems to happen for them. They need the resurrection of their withered faith. Then the rest will follow. Father Richard Paullissen discovered the difference.

            As a priest, he could say a Mass in 12 minutes flat. He had held retreats lasting for three days and never mentioned God once.  All was purely machinical. Rote.

 Sound strange? Actually, the problem is rather common. As a Protestant, I’ve met many clergy who could reel off theological ideas like a clockmaker explaining how a clock works, but their personal faith was as dead as the clock. They majored in ideas, but had no idea for how to bring the content to life.

            Father Richard Paullissen went to a retreat at a Benedictine Monastery in Pecos, New Mexico. I know the spiritual center well as I lived there for a period of time. Father Paullissen came to a “Life in the Spirit” seminar, aware of his own need. Around 55 people attended, including seven Presbyterians and three priests. Abbott David Garrets always prayed over the gatherings.

            I know well how powerful that can be. The Abbot was my Spiritual Director for many years. A brilliant student, Abbot David was a man that the Holy Spirit lived in and filled with divine gifts. However, when the Abbot prayed for Father Paullissen nothing seemed to happen.    

            A long-haired boy of around eleven years of age stood up.  Remembering the passage in Matthew 18:3, “unless you change and become like little children you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven,” Father Richard asked the boy to pray for him. The priest felt nothing.

            Feeling empty, Fr. Richard thought he had been passed over and was ready to give up when he glanced at a New Testament beside him. The pages had fallen open to passages he had routinely studied for eight years but suddenly sprang to life before his eyes. Fr. Richard read, “Why do you search for the living among the dead?”

            The word “living” exploded in his mind. The concept rang through his entire body. Fr. Richard realized he had been worshipping a dead God, a history book God. He had completely missed the living Christ!

            As the realization sunk in, Fr. Richard sensed a presence sitting next to him. He quietly uttered, “Jesus.” The Lord Jesus Christ came into his life. Father Richard was never the same again.

            And you? Been worshipping only an “idea?” Meeting the Master makes all the difference. Once you’ve crossed the threshold, everything changes. Is that a miracle? Sure. Once it happens, you’ll remember the moment as the greatest miracle in your life.

NO HELP EXISTED UNTIL

            When you’re in despair, where do you find healing? Where can you go for relief? Of course, doctors and hospitals as well as pharmacies are the regular and normal sources we usually turn to. But where do you look when those resources don’t have the answer? When modern science can’t produce help, what’s next?

            Surprisingly enough, multitudes have turned to the church and found hope. In the current secular age, that may not seem possible to many people. Nevertheless, results verify that a divine  force beyond ourselves can bring restoration.

            Mary Ann Cortes made such a discovery.

            Living in the New Orleans, Louisiana area, Mary Ann grew up in that picturesque area of the deep south. Unfortunately, she struggled with a severe mental illness. For seventeen years, Mary Ann was in and out of mental hospitals.  Every conceivable treatment for manic depressive patients short of shock therapy was tried. Over and over, doctors attempted to set her free of the grips of the mood swings and crippling depression but nothing worked. All the pills they filled her full of did not bring stability. She would wake up afraid of the coming day. The psychiatrist could do nothing.

            As she attempted to recover, Mary Ann was touched by the charismatic movement that brought an encounter with the Holy Spirit. Mary Ann was filled with the Holy Spirit and began attending a church that strongly believed in Holy Communion and the presence of Christ in the Sacrament. Mary Ann Cortes had started a new walk of faith.

            During Mary Ann’s reception of Holy Communion, she encountered the healing Christ. Jesus of Nazareth reached out and touched her. Mary Ann realized something was different. A change began in her mind.  In a short time, she was mentally, emotionally, and physically well.

            Mary Ann writes, “In that union with Him I received into my being the risen life of Jesus, which transforms me more and more. I identify with him and receive his life. … Jesus Himself enters into me and heals me from the inside.”

            Healing came through the faith she found in the Church. What happened to Mary Ann Cortes can happen to anyone. If you are struggling, that just might be the avenue you should seek. Find a church that expects the presence of Christ to be in the Sacrament, a church that extends the reality of Jesus Christ through its worship. You will be touched.

FROM OUT OF THE JUNGLE CAME

            Often unnoticed, there is an openness to spiritual reality in Africa that often far exceeds the Western world. While secular societies may scoff at the divine, many of the residents of Africa experience powerful displays of  healing power.

            Here’s an example.

            Mark and Pat Heiser finished Bible College and left for Nairobi, Kenya. Soon their home in Meru filled with the homeless and destitute children, victims of crime and drugs, called the Heiser’s Mama and Papa. Out of their work came other pastors like Allen and Mary Kusimba. One night a young mother stumbled into the Kusimba’s church.

            The woman had walked for miles carrying baby Florence, trying to reach a far-off clinic. When she found the clinic, the nurse gave her the unbearable diagnosis. Florence had already died.

            Overwhelmed with grief, the young woman began the strenuous journey back home to bury her precious daughter. As she trudged along, she heard an unexpected sound. From somewhere, the echo sounded like people singing. How could such be? It was 2:00 a.m. in the night. Nevertheless, the sounds of worship and praise floated across the jungle. Seeking relief and hope in her desperation, the woman drew near to the church.

            When she entered, the Pastor Allen rushed forward and greeted her. Reckoning her exhaustion, he offered to hold the baby for her. Discovering the baby was cold and stiff, the pastor called for everybody to pray. Placing his hands on the dead baby, as the pastor prayed, he abruptly felt the Holy Spirit say, “It is well with the baby.”

            Pastor Allen called aloud for the spirit of life to enter the lifeless body. As the small congregation prayed, the pastor continued to take authority over death. The small, stiff body started to move her arms. The prayers became even more urgent. Little Florence began to breathe! She was alive!

            The congregation broke into excited praise. The next day when the story spread through the village, everyone was amazed at what their heavenly Father had done.

            Amazed indeed! However, we don’t have to go to Africa to discover such events. They happen in your backyard if you know where to look. They are found and seen through the eyes of faith. Take a look.

The Miracle of the New Year!

The New Year is a time when people all around the world celebrate new beginnings and make resolutions for the year ahead. But did you know that Jesus also performed a miracle during this time? In the Gospel of John, there is a story about Jesus attending a wedding in the town of Cana. During the celebration, the hosts ran out of wine, causing embarrassment and distress. Understanding the situation, Jesus transformed water into wine, saving the wedding feast and bringing joy to everyone present.

This miracle is a significant event because it reveals Jesus’ divine power and his willingness to help others. It also teaches us about the values of abundance, generosity, and the importance of celebration. Jesus showcases his ability to turn something ordinary, like water, into something extraordinary – wine. By doing so, he demonstrates his authority over nature and his ability to meet people’s needs. In this case, Jesus brought happiness to the newlyweds and their guests, showing his compassion and desire to bring joy into their lives.

Moreover, this miracle highlights the significance of celebration in our lives. The wedding feast is a time for expressing joy and happiness, an occasion where people come together to share love and laughter. By performing this miracle, Jesus emphasizes the importance of celebrating life’s milestones and cherishing the moments we have with one another. It serves as a reminder for us to approach each new year with an attitude of gratitude and a spirit of celebration, knowing that Jesus is there to bring abundance and joy into our lives.

As we embark on a new year, this story reminds us to celebrate life’s milestones, cherish our time with loved ones, and have faith that Jesus can transform even the ordinary into something extraordinary. May the New Year be filled with blessings, joy, and a renewed sense of hope as we remember this miracle and Jesus’ presence in our lives.
