MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!
Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.
GRIEF SWALLOWED HER UNTIL…
Mit and Mary Lou Parsons have been friends for years. Last week they invited me over for supper. Still struggling with jet lag from my trip back from Ireland, the invitation felt like a godsend as I was still trying to get myself fully functioning again. While dining, we started discussing miraculous experiences. Out of the clear blue, Mary Lou told me this story.
Fifteen-year-old Mary Lou had grown up in Billings, Montana. A normal high school age kid, she had a boy friend named Philip Lewis. Phil always wanted a particular sport coat which he finally got. Life seemed perfect.
A group of friends decided to take a boat trip down the Yellowstone Rive and float back to Billings. Unfortunately, the river was in flood stage but they went anyway.
On Saturday, Mary Lou got a phone call. One of the boys could take her to Columbus where she could join the trip. Mary Lou knew she could talk her mother into letting her go, but this time she hit a wall. Her mother wouldn’t allow it. She was absolutely definite. No!
Sunday afternoon Mary Lou got the phone call. Phillip had drowned in the Yellowstone River!
Mary Lou was crushed. As the details came in, she was overwhelmed. Apparently in the flooding river, the boat had capsized. Phillip stayed with the craft, hoping to get it to shore but the current swept him next to a log and the vessel smashed into him, crushing his chest.
When Mary Lou went to the funeral home, she found Phillip resting in that sport coat he loved. She was broken beyond words.
While preparing for the funeral, another call came in. Her beloved grandmother had just passed away. Two deaths in two days? She couldn’t stand the losses. Never before had she experienced death and now darkness seemed to swallow her. The pain was uncontrollable. Laying in her bed that night, Mary Lou sobbed. She didn’t think she could stand bearing the tragedies. With tears streaming down her face, she cried out, “God help me!”
Abruptly a great hand appeared in the darkness and pressed against her chest. Mary Lou knew it was the hand of God. The gentle pressure of this giant hand seemed to emanate solace and comfort, taking her staggering grief away. A comfort beyond words flooded through her body. She knew God was with her and she could endure the unendurable.
The hand of God is still reaching into brokenness when hope seems to be gone. The contact always brings a miracle. When you need consolation, just reach for the touch. Our heavenly Father seems to work best when all else is gone.
Remember. Miracles never cease.
