GRIEF SWALLOWED HER UNTIL…

Mit and Mary Lou Parsons have been friends for years. Last week they invited me over for supper. Still struggling with jet lag from my trip back from Ireland, the invitation felt like a godsend as I was still trying to get myself fully functioning again. While dining, we started discussing miraculous experiences. Out of the clear blue, Mary Lou told me this story.

Fifteen-year-old Mary Lou had grown up in Billings, Montana. A normal high school age kid, she had a boy friend named Philip Lewis. Phil always wanted a particular sport coat which he finally got. Life seemed perfect.

A group of friends decided to take a boat trip down the Yellowstone Rive and float back to Billings. Unfortunately, the river was in flood stage but they went anyway.

On Saturday, Mary Lou got a phone call. One of the boys could take her to Columbus where she could join the trip. Mary Lou knew she could talk her mother into letting her go, but this time she hit a wall. Her mother wouldn’t allow it. She was absolutely definite. No!

Sunday afternoon Mary Lou got the phone call. Phillip had drowned in the Yellowstone River!

Mary Lou was crushed. As the details came in, she was overwhelmed. Apparently in the flooding river, the boat had capsized. Phillip stayed with the craft, hoping to get it to shore but the current swept him next to a log and the vessel smashed into him, crushing his chest.

When Mary Lou went to the funeral home, she found Phillip resting in that sport coat he loved. She was broken beyond words.

While preparing for the funeral, another call came in. Her beloved grandmother had just passed away. Two deaths in two days? She couldn’t stand the losses. Never before had she experienced death and now darkness seemed to swallow her. The pain was uncontrollable. Laying in her bed that night, Mary Lou sobbed. She didn’t think she could stand bearing the tragedies. With tears streaming down her face, she cried out, “God help me!”

Abruptly a great hand appeared in the darkness and pressed against her chest. Mary Lou knew it was the hand of God. The gentle pressure of this giant hand seemed to emanate solace and comfort, taking her staggering grief away.  A comfort beyond words flooded through her body. She knew God was with her and she could endure the unendurable.

The hand of God is still reaching into brokenness when hope seems to be gone. The contact always brings a miracle. When you need consolation, just reach for the touch. Our heavenly Father seems to work best when all else is gone.

            Remember. Miracles never cease.

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE

I’ve just returned from eleven days in Ireland, traveling from Dublin to Belfast and all sites in-between. The trip had many dimensions, including talking with the locals, visiting historic sites that stretched back to 10,000 B.C., and spending time at shrines like the Apparition of Mary at a little church in Knock. I continue to explore these mysteries and miracles that happen with Protestants, Roman Catholics, Jews, and even people who did not believe until they had an experience that opened their eyes to eternity.

I continue to be amazed by these divine encounters that I can never fully understand or explain. Nevertheless, I am confounded by how frequently they occur. Even in these times of doubt and secular scorn, they happen everywhere. Here’s an example.

The Jerusalem Post reported Jewish Shiv Grewal was eating in a restaurant with his wife Alison near their south-east London residence when he suffered a cardiac arrest. By the time paramedics arrived, it appeared his heart had stopped beating. Shiv said, “I knew somehow that I was dying.” For seven minutes Shiv Grewal was dead.

Grewal details how he felt profoundly detached from his physical body as if he occupied an ethereal void. Suddenly he recounted experiencing emotions and sensations without the constraints of a human form. Grewal likened this sensation to weightless swimming in the water and recalled, “I felt like I walked over the moon and could see meteorites and the whole space.”

Interestingly enough in Moreland and Haberman’s Immortality: The Other Side of Death, they found very similar descriptions from most persons who had near-death experiences. Over half describe an unworldly or heavenly realm. More than half met deceased relatives or angelic beings. Many people found it difficult to describe what they experienced. One person said, “There are no human words that even come close.” These authors noted that often there is a difference between what people report and how they later interpret it. However, when the authors dug into what people were saying, they discovered what they encountered was consistent with what Scripture reports is to come.

Gives you something to ponder. Yes! Maybe, just maybe, the best is yet to be.

            Remember. Miracles never cease.

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

SHE SAW NO HOPE UNTIL …

Last week I shared an encounter in Tulsa, Oklahoma when I was talking with one of my colleagues about some of her spiritual experiences. Margie McCaslin is a clergyperson and bishop in Denver, Colorado. I was fascinated by one of her spiritual experiences. She had one of those moments that turns a secularist on their ear. Margie reached back into the First Century and took a page right out of the Book of Acts.

A friend wanted Margie to go with her to Switzerland because her husband couldn’t go. The friend had a niece in the German speaking sector, and they could visit her. Even though Margie couldn’t speak a word of German, the trip sounded like fun.

The niece had a boyfriend named Omar who spoke only German and didn’t understand any English. Nevertheless, when he learned Margie was a Christian clergyperson, he was enthusiastic to meet her. Omar knew virtually nothing about the Christian faith but wanted to learn about Jesus. The young man seemed to have an urgency about discovering what this rabbi was all about.

Margie was more than ready to share, but realized they had a serious communication problem. Neither one could understand the other. She began to pray fervently. “Lord, we’ve got a big complication. Omar can’t understand me, nor I him. Please help us connect.”

They sat down together and Margie took a deep breath. “You want to talk about Jesus?”

            “Yes,” Omar said.

Margie was taken back. How could he have understood her?”

“You know about Jesus of Nazareth from the Bible?”

Omar nodded his head. “Yes, I do.”

Margie was stunned. They were communicating perfectly. Just as in the Book of Acts on the Day of Pentecost, where there were a multitude of different languages but everyone understood saying, “we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues.” The exact experience was happening again.

Omar understood Margie’s every word and professed a new faith. He wanted her to baptize him. Even though it was late at night, they walked down to a lake in the dark, but a storm started blowing in. Nevertheless, Margie and Omar walked into the lake. There in the total darkness, she immersed him. As he came up out of the cold, cold water, a light abruptly bounced off the water.  But from where?

Omar immediately wanted to take Holy Communion. With the extreme time difference from America, Margie was exhausted. Nevertheless, a deeply touching service followed. Finally, at 3:00 in the morning, they went back to the hotel and parted company. Margie shut her hotel room door and whispered, “Please, God. My body hurts so bad. I’m exhausted. Please give me some energy.” She staggered into the shower.

When she stepped out dripping wet, Margie realized that all exhaustion had vanished. She was reenergized! God had moved again.

Pentecost was a long, long time ago? Not for Margie and Omar. And not so for us either.    Remember. Miracles never cease.

SHE HAD A HEART ATTACK, BUT …

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

SHE HAD A HEART ATTACK, BUT …

A week ago I was in Tulsa, Oklahoma participating in a consecration of a new bishop. As we were waiting for the service to begin, I was talking with one of my colleagues and we began sharing spiritual experiences. Margie McCaslin is a clergyperson and a bishop in Denver, Colorado. A sensitive and deeply caring friend, Margie and I discovered that we had once had parallel important spiritual encounters.

If secularists had been eves dropping on our conversation, they would have been startled by our journeys. Closed to the transcendent and eternal, secularly oriented people assume there is no such thing as Divine intervention. They are wrong.

Margie had discovered that in Holy Communion, we can experience the life of Christ. As the Sacrament becomes “The Real Presence of Christ,” his life flows into us. Because she had struggled with a heart condition as a child, the Sacrament was paramount.

During her childhood, Margie had a pulmonary condition resulting in a valve in her heart being too small. As a three-year old child, she had to undergo surgical procedures that were painful and scary. The result was Margie was on special medications from then on.

As an adult, Margie McCaslin felt called to the ministry and began pastoring a church. A couple in the church needed help moving so Margie and her husband Glenn showed up to help. She had to climb steep stairs carrying boxes up a flight of steps. As she reached the top, Margie suddenly knew she was having a heart attack. Crumbling to the floor, she started to pray. “Please help me! Lord, this is really inconvenient!”

Like a voice coming over a telephone, Margie heard, “Go down stairs. Don’t climb these stairs again. Just push the boxes in the truck around.” A strange answer for a person with a heart attack!

            But Margie obeyed.

She immediately called her cardiologist. He examined Margie and confirmed she did have a heart attack. She was immediately taken in for x-rays. Everyone was astonished. The doctor again confirmed Margie did have a heart attack, but now her heart was perfectly normal. No sign of the old problem.  She had obeyed and God had answered.

Later, Margie was praying and spiritually felt herself becoming one with Christ on the Cross.  As she knelt on the floor with her arms stretched out in a cruciform position, she knew the inspiration of the Holy Sacrament was working in her. She felt the Risen Christ speak. “My blood runs through you.” The result was a healing.

What the Church offers, helps us cross that divide between time and eternity. Never doubt how faith can carry you through the most difficult times.

            Remember. Miracles never cease.

If SHE HADN’T LISTENED, DISASTER WOULD HAVE …

Recently my wife and I were having supper with friends when I discovered this story. For anonymity sake, I’m using pseudonyms. We were discussing the Vietnam War when the following experience was related to me.

John Harris had joined the army like so many others that went to Vietnam. He had been trained to be a forward observer. With binoculars, John crawled to the edge of the enemy lines to make observations that would allow Army soldiers to advance. An extremely dangerous assignment, that was still John’s job. Of course, his mother fervently prayed for him.

In the middle of the night, John’s mother awoke with a distinct feeling that John was in imminent danger.  As she continued praying, she knew something had to be done quickly. A distinct thought emerged.

She contacted the military and told them that the family was faced with a crisis that demanded John’s involvement and immediate attention. They must get him out of the front lines immediately. Her request went through amazingly fast. John was pulled back from the front to await further instructions.

When the forward observers advanced the next day, the entire unit was wiped out. Only John Harris survived.

The Lord had spoken. John’s mother listened. John survived.

You might ask, “Why only John? Weren’t the others important?”

Most certainly. Absolutely most certainly. But apparently no one else was listening.

One of the elements I’ve observed in miraculous experiences has been that someone was ready for a prompting of the Holy Spirit. They were open. Observant. Worshipping. Listening. Doubters tend to be spiritually closed. Believers remain spiritually open.

How about you? Are you listening?

Remember. Miracles never cease.

ONE MIRACLE, TWO MIRACLES, AND…

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

ONE MIRACLE, TWO MIRACLES, AND…

For several weeks I’ve been asking, “Does praying make any difference?” Secularists conclude you’re only talking to yourself but they only live in one dimension, the physical world.  I keep pointing out that people of faith live in two worlds: the natural and the supernatural. Here’s another example of what happens when we cross that divide.

Archbishop Quinton Moore is the Presiding Bishop of the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches and one of my best friends. Here’s what he learned about prayer while working in Africa.

Ugandans call their churches Prayer Palaces where the services are almost endless. After three hours of congregational singing, the sick and infirm are carried in on mats. The twisted, broken bodies were placed down front near the pulpit. People pray constantly.

Bishop Quinton stood up and proclaimed his text. “And in that day his burden will depart from your shoulder, and his yoke will be destroyed from your neck.” (Isaiah 10:27) Inspiration grew as he preached that the power of God would remove burdens and break all yokes. Unfortunately, the translator couldn’t get it straight and finally Quinton felt his sermon was going nowhere. What he needed was to pray for the broken. Quinton jumped down from the pulpit into the midst of the struggling mass of humanity.

A14-year old girl sat in front of him with a twisted body that left her immobile. She held up her arm and Quinton swung at her hand, hitting the palm. Immediately, the girl stood up and began clapping. She ran through the congregation with overwhelming joy. Quinton stood there more astonished than anyone in the room.

How did I do that? he thought. I can’t do such things!

While people prayed, Bishop Quinton had simply reached out to help a struggling girl and a miracle followed.

The multitude surged forward. Elders immediately began lining the people up in an orderly fashion. One-by-one they marched before Quinton for him to lay hands on them. After he prayed, most would take several steps and fall to the ground. The elders would pull them aside and the line walked forward. For three and a half hours, the needy came by. Quinton became so tired he could barely stand. Finally, he cratered to the floor, weeping at what he had seen.

An Ugandan elder bent down. “You didn’t do nothing,” the man whispered. “They had the faith, It was in them, not you.” People prayed.

            Remember. Miracles never cease.

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

THEY THOUGHT SHE WOULD DIE BUT…

Last week I ask, “Does praying make any difference?” I noted that secularists conclude you’re only talking to yourself when you pray but they only live in one dimension, the physical world. People of faith live in two worlds: the natural and the supernatural. Here’s another example of how prayer reaches across that divide and changes things.

Mark Cooper called me this week. I have known him since he was a young teenager. Mark wanted to bring me up to date on what had happened to his wife Valorie. She had trouble sleeping and occasionally got up in the middle of the night.  On this particular night at around 4:00 a.m., Valorie slipped and her head crashed on the rock-hard kitchen floor. Mark heard her scream and jumped out of bed to help her.

Valorie seemed to be okay, but as they talked, she began to feel pain in her head and began feeling woozy. Something was wrong, Mark called 911. He reasoned she needed a CAT-Scan to make sure nothing serious happened. The ambulance arrived with his instructions to take her to a near-by hospital for the test. After they picked Valorie up and left, the ambulance called Mark. Her condition was far more complicated than he realized. They were taking her directly to a hospital better equipped to deal with brain damage.

Valorie’s condition was serious.

Mark hurried around to get to the hospital. A doctor called. Valorie was in trouble. She had severe damage with bleeding in her brain. To stop the hemorrhage, immediate surgery was needed.  A big piece of her skull would be removed to accommodate swelling. She would be on a breathing machine as they weren’t sure she could breathe on her own after the operation. The situation was touch and go. No one could assure Mark what would happen. Mark panicked.

After the surgery, Mark sat by her bed. Heavily bandaged, her skull remained open but heavily bandaged. He felt she didn’t know him or anything else. The first day was awful.

The second day didn’t show improvement. Mark began calling everybody he knew to pray. Church people were alerted and family members notified. People they didn’t even know began praying for Valorie. Prayer was constant and universal. Mark prayer over and over. The next day would be critical.

On the third day, Mark returned to the hospital with trepidation. He opened the hospital door. To his shock, Valorie was sitting up in bed eating breakfast. The doctors were shocked. How could she be doing so well? They could only shrug their shoulders and say, “The Man upstairs had other plans for her. It’s a miracle.”

Expecting release to take weeks, Valorie went home in one week. Her brain did not swell. Her balance remains good and today she is fine.

Does prayer make a difference? Ask Mark and Valorie. They’ll tell you that the Holy Spirit is there if you will only ask Him to come.

Remember. Miracles never cease.
