MIRACLES NEVER CEASE
Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.
TURNING PAIN INTO PROMISE
People often ask, “How long should I pray for someone”? Could a continual intercession make a difference? The answer is yes. In my experience, prayer is not an attempt to get God’s attention. Rather, praying is linking hands with our heavenly Father and becoming a conduit of grace and healing power. Continual intercession becomes like a flowing stream that continually bathes the need in healing waters.
Luke Burgie is an example. During the summer months, I spent time in the Colorado mountains not that far from Colorado Springs where Luke lives. In late 1998 and early 1999, medical reports certify that Luke had been constantly sick every day for over six months. Seven doctors, including a specialist from Children’s Hospital in Denver worked with Luke, but nothing made any difference or brought improvement. The test after test could not determine what was wrong with Luke.
His family could see that Luke was running out of time. He barely ate and his body rejected everything he consumed. Ten percent of his body weight disappeared. Luke was literally wasting away.
Luke’s mother Jan Burgie taught religious education in a Roman Catholic School where she worked with Sisters from the Mount St. Francis Convent. Sister Clarice immediately recognized the seriousness of Luke’s situation. Returning to the sisters, she declared a Novena for Luke.
The word Novena is Latin for “time” meaning a long continual prayer for a specific need. The sisters agreed to pray constantly and continually for Luke’s illness. For nearly a month, they prayed. Suddenly at the end of the Novena, Luke’s pain abruptly disappeared.
Overnight everything became normal. He could eat. His strength returned and his body no longer rejected food. Luke was healed.
The change was so instantaneous and profound that after extensive investigation, the Roman Catholic Church officially declared Luke Burgie’s recovery was a miracle. Today Luke tries to avoid the media and their attention. He hardly remembers the illness and knows only what others have told him. The family remains thrilled that he has recovered.
And what do you learn from Luke Burgie’s experience? The extensive continual prayer of faithful devout people changes problems turning pain into promise. We definitely can live by hope. Been praying for someone longer than a month? When the burden seems insurmountable and the mountain unclimbable, stay on your knees. Jesus told us to pray always and not give up.
(Luke 18:1)
The point? Don’t stop praying … and remember miracles never cease.
