THEY DIDN’T BELIEVE IN MIRACLES UNTIL…

            Living in a secular society in what now appears to be a post-Christian culture, these numbers may surprise you. In Lee Strobel’s The Case for Miracles, his research found that 67% of the American public believe in miracles.  Startling as it may be, 38 % say they have experienced a miracle. That amounts to 94,792,00 Americans who claim such an event happened to them! Over half believe that the miracles described in the Bible actually happened as they are described. What percent don’t believe in miracles? Only 15%!

            Here’s an example why people believe.

            For anonymity sake, let’s call the family “the Smith’s” with a son named Will. Coming home from church, a ten-year old Will was playing with the car’s backdoor handle when he accidently depressed it and the door flew open. As the car sped down the street, Will was thrown out onto the pavement. A deadly calamity!

            Horrified! The parents whirled the car around, expecting to find Will laying on the street terrible injured … possibly dead. To their surprise, the boy was standing there unharmed! Mrs. Smith rushed out of the car screaming, “What happened?”

            “Didn’t you see the man?” the boy explained. “The man who caught me.”

            There was no man.

            Badly shaken, Will’s father took out a handkerchief to wipe his eyes. He could hardly speak. How could this escape from death be explained? Mr. Smith said, “There’s no doubt in my mind that an angel caught him.”

            The Smith family joined that 67% who believe and the 38% who experienced a miracle. Believe in miracles? The odds will be in our favor. Join up.

THE DREAM SEEMED UNFATHOMABLE UNTIL …

            Recently, I shared a miraculous story unfolding in the midst of the tragic war raging in Gaza. Regardless of your political persuasion, the situation is profoundly devastating. Could anything positive be found in the midst of this chaos?

            Scripture tells us that the love of God is not destroyed by war. Here’s another example of how divine concern is still at work in the Holy Land.

            Osama lived in Jericho and worked for the Palestinian Authority. I’ve been through Jordan many times and seen the excavations seeking the remains of the walls of Jericho when centuries ago Joshua’s army marched around seven times. Osama would have seen the dig every day in this ancient city.

            One night Osama dreamed about Jesus. Night after night the same theme returned. Being a Moslem, he was not sure of what to think. Osama went to the Iman and enquired about the meeting of his dreams. The Moslem authority told the young man to read the Qur’an and the dream would stop. Osama followed the instructions only to discover that the more he read, the more these appearances returned.

            Going back to the Iman, Osama was told to be more involved in the mosque and that would bring a cure. That night? Another dream about Jesus. Finally, the Iman directed Osama to make a Hajj, a pilgrimage to Mecca.

            Like millions of pilgrims over the centuries, Osama started walking around the Kaaba, often called the house of Allah. The huge black structure is considered the most sacred mosque in Islam.  The doctrine in The Five Pillars of Islam decrees that a believer should make the journey at least once in a lifetime. In a five-day period over a million people walk around the Kaaba. During the promenade, the pilgrim is supposed to say prayers and look up at the Kaaba. When Osma looked up, he sat Jesus standing on the top.

            Jesus looked down and said, “Osama leave this place. You are going in the wrong direction. Leave and go home.” Overwhelmed, Osama left.

 Some time later he found a Christian friend who shared the story of the resurrection with him. He discovered the risen Christ had appeared in his dreams.  Osama knew this account and explanation of his dreams was true. He realized the reality and meaning of the appearances of the risen Christ. And today? Osama is a changed man. His face radiates joy.

           Easter happened to Osama. Just another one of many stories for the season. Of all the miracle experiences I have encountered, resurrection stories remain the most overpowering. Reach out to the risen Christ and you too can become part of the story.

THE GREATEST MIRACLE IN HISTORY

            Easter commemorates the moment when time stood still. A man had been unjustly almost beaten to death and then cruelly crucified. Three days later he walked out of the tomb alive and continuing his ministry. Jesus Christ had overcome death. Time started again.

            To this day, we are still swept along by this event… the greatest miracle in history.

            But the miracle didn’t stop and has been going on ever since. Consider the impact of how it continues to this moment. Dr. James Allen Francis put it this way.

“He was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He grew up in another village. He worked in a carpenter shop until He was thirty. Then for three years He was an itinerant preacher.

He never owned a home. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family. He never went to college. He never put His foot inside a big city. He never traveled two hundred miles from the place He was born. He never did one of the things that usually accompany greatness. He had no credentials but Himself…

While still a young man, the tide of popular opinion turned against him. His friends ran away. One of them denied Him. He was turned over to His enemies. He went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed upon a cross between two thieves. While He was dying His executioners gambled for the only piece of property He had on earth – His coat. When He was dead, He was laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend.

Nineteen long centuries have come and gone, and today He is a centerpiece of the human race and leader of the column of progress.

I am far within the mark when I say that all the armies that ever marched, all the navies that were ever built; all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as has that one solitary life.”

Easter Day marks the celebration of that miracle. And, oh, it happened for you.

SHE DIDN’T BELIEVE UNTIL …

            Context can certainly make the difference. Many, many people have no expectation that God cares. Once they cross that line, often even to their surprise, things happen. Let’s add another element. Sometimes divine interventions take time. We must remember that no response is a divine delay for reasons that often we cannot grasp. Don’t doubt when you have to wait. Cassaundra Siegersma’s experience is an example.

            Cassundra had grown up with some erroneous ideas about how the Holy Spirit intervenes. Having been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, she struggled with sleep apnea, asthma, and fibromyalgia. If that wasn’t enough, two herniated disks resulted in two back surgeries. These problems caused her to sleep all day and not at night. Trying to make ends meet, her husband worked three jobs to pay for Cassandra’s problems, but bankruptcy loomed before them.

            Needing a break, Cassandra accepted an invitation to attend a spiritual conference in Colorado Springs. She came with some hesitancy about the speaker but quickly recognized that the teacher basically quoted the Bible. Cassandra couldn’t argue with that! Since scripture was true, what she was hearing had to be true. Finally, Cassandra went forward to have intercessors pray over her problems.

            She returned to the hotel room and made a definite decision to trust that the Holy Spirit had done something definite in her life. Cassandra would believe regardless of what followed.

Two weeks later her resolution proved true.

            As she was trying to sleep, Cassandra felt a sensation on her toes. She thought her husband probably wanted her to take him to work but when she looked no one was there. She had received a touch from God. Cassandra knew the sensation was real. Within five minutes she was asleep better than she had in years.

            When she awoke, Cassandra knew she was in a new place. She had received a gift and believed God wants everyone to have the same. Today Cassandra proclaims no matter what the problem might be, the Cross is the answer. What happened on the Cross is bigger than any problem we could ever have.

            Today she declares, “Let God be your refuge and your fortress, your delivery, and a very present help in time of need. He will meet you wherever you are.”

            Cassandra lives in this context. You might pause and give some thought about the context that surrounds you. One of anticipating God to act on your behalf? One of expectancy? Sometimes you have to wait? No problem. Cassandra will tell you about the difference your expectations can make. Faith opens to door  to the Divine context.

THE CRASH LEFT NO HOPE UNTIL

            “Mrs. Black?” the voice on the phone said. “Yes.”

            “This is St. Joseph’s hospital in Burbank. I’m sorry to tell there’s been an airplane crash. One man was killed and there are only two survivors in critical condition. One of them is your son.”

            She listened in stunned silence. This can’t be happening!

            Dale Black had gone down. As a pilot, he had flown all over the country.  Now he lay unconscious on a hospital bed with his life slipping away. The tragic seemed inconceivable but Dale Black appeared to be at the end of his life.

            But where was he?

            In the story of his life, Dale Black’s book Flight to Heaven (Bethany House Publishers) tells the astonishing story of what happened to him in that hospital room. As the trauma team worked feverishly, Dale felt detached and then realized he was floating up to the ceiling where he could look down on what was happening below him.  Leaving his mangled body behind, memories flooded in. Dale remembered as a boy at a summer church camp he had asked Jesus Christ to be his Lord and Savior then as that memory faded, he flew away from the hospital room, leaving his body behind. Where was he going?

            Dale Black started down a narrow pathway. An incandescent beam illuminated his way. He seemed to be travelling at an enormous rate of speed when abruptly, Dale discovered he wasn’t alone. Two angels were alongside. Then he realized that he was approaching a magnificent city filled with wonderful light. Dale intuitively knew he belonged in this place of overpowering beauty. Wonderful colors of all shades danced in the air. Iridescent grass overflowed with beautiful flowers. The glow and energy of a brilliant light danced in all directions and yet, Dale could look at the light without hurting his eyes. Glorious music filled the air while millions of people moved in the light and swayed to the music.  The sound was a combination of singing and instruments in a wonderous blend of harmony and cooperation. Worship of God was the heart and focus of the music. Intuitively, he knew Jesus, the Word, held it all together.

            Never had Dale Black felt such overwhelming peace.

            In the following weeks after returning to his body, Dale heard the doctors predict he would never fly again. Believing in the promise in the book of James, Dale called for the elders to pray over him and his condition. The recovery and rehabilitation were not easy, but his faith and the vision of what he seen carried Dale forward. Dale knew he’d been to heaven and come back. He would fly again … now … and finally then.

MIRACLE AT A GAS STATION

Suddenly it’s 2024… with a lot of fog settling around. This new year is filled with old problems. Political division, crazy accusations, homeless people in tents, war in the Middle East and the assault on Ukraine … on and on it goes like a bad movie.

But wait! Divine interventions are still happening everywhere. My file with over 300 interviews with people who had miraculous encounters is an example of promise. In the midst of the social and national confusion, angels could be waiting on your doorstep. That happened to Junior Neese.

Junior had been a decorated football player and graduated from high school without learning to read or write. With a heart for the poor, his limitations sent him down a difficult road. Nevertheless, Junior was touched by the Christian faith and wanted to serve.

On this particular day, he was traveling from Oklahoma City to Mobile, Alabama when Junior stopped for gas and noticed a homeless man walking toward him. Looking like a tramp, the man walked up and wanted to hitch a ride. Junior was hesitant, but felt he should help anyone who looked so disposed. He told the man to climb in.

About 15 minutes into the trip, the vagabond began telling him facts about Junior’s life. He recited incidences that had created pain and disappointment for Junior. The man talked about details that no one could possibly know. Junior clutched the steering wheel tightly as tears ran down his cheeks. The passenger kept revealing intimate facts from his past. How could such be?

Then, the wanderer began to speak words of compassion and love. Junior could sense each consolation sinking in to the very depths of his soul. The traveler’s words were healing, erasing the sting of old hurts and rejection. The man kept speaking of God’s love and forgiveness, telling Junior how much his heavenly Father loved the poor and those who cared for the needy.

The drive from Oklahoma City to Memphis takes about seven hours, but time seemed to evaporate. Junior lost all sense of time. When he reached Memphis, it seemed only minutes had passed. However, the needle on the fuel gauge said he needed gasoline. Junior pulled in next to a pump, leaving the shabby-looking man in the front seat waiting for him. He quickly filled the tank.

Junior opened the car door to get in. The man had disappeared. He was simply gone and the side door had not been opened. Hebrew 1:14 raced through his mind. “Angels are only servants… spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.”

Junior Neese knew the man disguised as a bum had actually been an angel. An angel sent to give him consolation and peace. A real, live angel had brought him peace. Junior’s life was changed.

Hebrews tells us that many have entertained angels unaware. Could that happen to you? Most certainly! Keep your eyes … and your heart open.

AFTER DEATH THEY FOUND….

I have a major movie for you to see at your local theater! My daughter and her husband took me to see After Death, a scientific exploration of Near-Death-Experiences with the stories of professional people who encountered the beyond and came back. The scientific data is a confirmation of what I’ve been writing about for years.

 The movie is more like a documentary as doctors, scientist, and home folks witness to what they experienced. After coming back from death, they tell one story. Love is the answer the world needs. After you’ve seen the picture, you’ll want to share it with others.

 As I was discussing the movie with a friend, she suddenly began to tell me how her grandmother from a little Oklahoma town of Arnett had the same experience. When asked why she didn’t share her extraordinary journey into eternity, the grandmother whispered, “I was afraid people would think I was off my rocker!”

            The movie repeats this theme. More people that you would imagine had after-life discoveries. They didn’t talk about it because they weren’t sure how others would accept them. This movie will help break that barrier.

            These Near-Death-Experiences confirm that God’s world is waiting for people. In my book Crossing the Threshold of Eternity, I document many of such stories. Here’s an example.

            One of the last survivors of World War I, Jack Oscar was 106 when he shared the story of the first man he saw die in that war. His company had shipped out of the White Cliffs of Dover and landed in France. As he plunged into the war, the frightening explosions of combat were overwhelming. Bombs errupted everywhere around him.

            His buddy had started to run up a hill when German machine guns opened up.  The spray of lead tore across his body. The man writhed in pain as his organs broke out of his abdomen.

            “Shoot me!” he screamed at Jack Oscar. “Please take me out of this pain. I can’t take it.”

            Oscar didn’t know what to do, but thought maybe he should shoot the man. The guy’s pain was too awful for anyone to endure.

            Suddenly the soldier stopped screaming. He held up his arms and a broad smile broke across his face. The man softly said one word. “Mother.”

            With the smile on his face, he died peacefully.

            I have a file filled with such stories. There are differences, but they all bare witness to one reality. The love of God is waiting in that other dimension. Take your faith and you can travel across.

ANGELIC INTERVENTIONS SAVE THE DAY!

            Americans believe in angels!  Along with convictions about heaven and prayer, 67% of the entire population believe in angels. Of those with a religious affiliation, 84% believe in the angelic realm. You’re in a popular crowd if you affirm the same.

            As I wander around the countryside picking up experiences of divine intervention, I often run into people who have had encounters with angels – which is certainly miraculous. Recently, I ran into a story about an encounter that happened to Sarah Loutner in Springfield, Tennessee. Today, Sarah Loutner is a dancer and performs routines with a Christian message. At the time, Sarah was only a small child.           

            The Loutner family lived in an old two-story farm house. Like any older house that had been built years before, the staircase was steep. As was the custom in by-gone days, the stairs angled up partway to a landing, then turned 90 degrees before going up the rest of the way to the top. Sarah had a special place upstairs where she played with her toys. On this afternoon, she tired of playing with the dolls and wondered what her mother might be doing. Probably, she was down in the kitchen where cookies might be waiting. Sarah pushed the playthings aside and hurried toward the steps.

            Pre-occupied in thinking about where her mother might be, Sarah didn’t pay attention to the abruptly sloping stairs. Her feet got tangled up, and Sarah fell head first down the plunging steps.

            Like a scene in a slow-motion movie, Sarah discovered a figure standing on the landing. The man towered above the steps. Big and powerful, he appeared to be surrounded by a shimmering glow. The light swirled around him and Sarah immediately felt reassurance that she didn’t have to be afraid.

            To her total surprise, Sarah realized that she was not falling, but seemed to be floating toward the unknown figure on the landing.  Unseen hands carryied her downward until finally her feet landed gently on the floor. She knew that an angel had intervened to save her.

            When she looked up, the angel was gone. Sarah ran to tell her mother what had happened. She listened, but Sarah distinctly felt she didn’t believe her. Years later, when Sarah, her brother Aaron, and her mother got off on the subject of angels, Sarah recounted the experience. This time her mother was convinced a guardian angel had indeed intervened, but wasn’t sure why an angel would have secured her.

            Sarah’s brother Aaron immediately added, “You’re a dancer! You were caught so you could dance for God.”

            Just thinking about her brother’s response, makes Sarah want to dance today. You also have a guardian angel. No matter what you are struggling with, just thinking about that protection might do the same for you!

Remember. Miracles never cease.
