THOUSANDS STARED IN AMAZEMENT WHEN …

            Every now and then I run across an amazing event that stops me in my tracks. In our secular society, most people don’t expect anything supernatural to happen and aren’t looking. But here’s what happened in Egypt when someone was open.

            A wealthy Muslim felt that the Madonna had appeared to him in a vivid dream asking him to build a church. The Virgin Mary promised to return when the church was finished. As unusual as it seemed, the Muslim constructed a Christian Church.

            Forty-three years later the devout old Muslim and his dream had been forgotten. An auto repair shop had been built across the street. Two Muslim mechanics stepped out for a breath of fresh air and noticed a glowing female standing on top of St. Mary’s Church of Zeitoun. They assumed a nun was contemplating suicide and ran for the pastor. When they returned, the woman was gone. Nevertheless, the word spread and at night crowds began to gather, hoping to see the lady return.

            Abruptly on April 9, the radiant lady appeared in a robe of glorious light. After that night, she kept appearing randomly and frequently on the roof of the church. Pictures were taken by the growing crowd. In startling clarity, the photos presented her figure real and confounding. The appearances lasted from 10 minutes to several hours. “Doves of light” appeared flying around the church. The crowds grew from tens of thousands to over 100,000. Everyone saw the Lady on the roof!

            Bishop Samuel, official investigator for the Copic Church, came and witnessed the bright light surrounding the Lady. Coptic Pope Kryllos sent Bishop Athanasius and he was equally overwhelmed. This “Lady of the Light” made hundreds of appearances before she stopped coming. While no exact reason for the appearances was ever revealed, the unresolved mystery  of her appearances continued as a response to the cold skepticism of the secular age. Conventional assumptions about reality had been severely challenged.

            Do those appearance stop you in your tracks? Gives you something to think about? While we may not know why they are, these appearances do have a purpose. Maybe one of them is to wake us up!

LOST IN DESPAIR UNTIL…

            Steve Kilcoyne was born into an Irish Catholic working class family. What his life was supposed to be was challenged to the core when he was drafted into service in the Vietnam war. Three times he appealed to avoid the inevitable, but was soon on his way to Da Nang. As was true for so, so many, the only way he could sustain his life with the carnage and terror was to stay drunk at night and stay on substance-induced drugs during the day. His life took on a surreal disoriented quality.

            When he returned to America, Steve began living on the street and wound up in the Haight Ashbury streets of San Francisco.  The summer of love had died and the streets were filled with drug addicts. One Spring afternoon, Steve walked down a street, struggling, angry, talking to himself, when he came to a red light and stopped. Before the light could change, his life was about to change.

            Steve looked up and saw a small angel hovering in the air above his head. Holding a sledge hammer, the angel kept beating on an iron anvil. Abruptly, on the other side a second angel was doing the same thing. In a flash, Steve felt a shockwave of awe and his war time wounds responding to this angelic presence. The desperation and savage anxiety eating away inside of him broke open. Steve knew he was no longer alone. As he gazed at the angels, incredible serenity filled him. These beings had come to protect and help him. Love that he had never known filled him. The angels pounding on their anvils sent a new energy through his body.

            Steve left the street life and went to a veteran’s hospital to deal with the trauma from the war. He quit drinking and using drugs. He contributed to the military’s growing understanding of post-trauma stress disorder. As his healing continued, he vowed to make some kind of meaningful art out of his war experience. With symbols of language and dreams, he wanted to portray the hidden truths that give life meaning. Out of this time came a dream he called Angels/Anvils. His theater of healing brought new reconciliation to a war-torn world.

            And how did the change occur? By an angelic visitation. You don’t have to go through the misery and struggle Steve did to recognize angels are equally concerned for you. Everybody has a guardian angel seen or unseen. That angel is continually working for you. Reach out and tell him hello.

HIS LIFE WAS RUINED UNTIL…

            Can angels make a difference? Oh, you bet! Whether you believe in angels or not, you still do have one: a guardian angel. Here’s an example of the impact they can make.

            John-Ray Johnson got permanently kicked out of school when he was almost 18 years-old for gambling. (Among other things) The worst came when he tried to run over the teacher who turned him in for drinking in his class. He escaped serious jail time only by agreeing to plead guilty, joining the Army and leaving town.

            John-Ray Johnson was on his way to Vietnam.

            His eighteen months on the front lines were a living hell. All around him, men were shot and mutilated. Bodies stacked in piles. The only way he could face the daily assaults was by staying drunk and high on drugs.

 He lost his soul in that war. When John-Ray came back, he was in such pain that he cared about nothing. Maybe he should just die.

            One afternoon his mother persuaded him to attend a cousin’s funeral with her. On that hot humid afternoon, John-Ray followed her to the cemetery. When he saw a canopy over the open grave, he couldn’t get any closer and turned away. Feeling like he was sick, he fell on the grass. When he looked up at the tombstone in front of him, there was his name. Even though the engraving turned out to be for a cousin he never knew, the grave marker jolted him like another night in Vietnam.

            John-Ray stood, ready to run when an eight-foot-tall angel appeared standing in front of him. The figure seemed to glow from within and stared at him with fierce eyes. The young man kept blinking, trying to make the towering spectacle disappear, but the angel continued glaring at him.

            When the angel started to walk away, John-Ray felt he had to follow. The angel walked faster and John-Ray had to almost run to keep up with him as they crossed the cemetery and came to the far backside. Suddenly the angel turned around. His fiery eyes had become pools of anger.                       

            Without saying a word, the angel pointed to an open grave. John-Ray shook with terror. Sobbing bitterly, he fell on his knees on the green grass. The grave seemed to be meant for him. 

            A hand touched his shoulder. John-Ray was certain it was the angel, but it was his mother. Thinking he was sick; she took him home and John-Ray tumbled into bed. The next morning, he knelt by his bed where he hadn’t prayed since childhood. He poured out his brokenness and confessed all the rotten things he had done. The angel experience had brought a profound desire to change.

            John-Ray entered a program for alcoholism and drug dependency to swipe away his addiction. He learned the plumbing trade and eventually married. A son followed. John-Ray became a committed Christian and witness to the love of God. The angel’s visit had saved him from a way of life that would have surely killed him. John-Ray had one desire left. When his life ends, he hopes to meet that angel again. Just wants to thank him.

            You don’t have to stagger through a cemetery to know an angel is watching over you. Everyone does have a guardian angel. Just don’t be hesitant to ask for guidance and help. He’ll be there.

THE DEAD RETURNED WHEN…

            Whether it’s popular to believe so or not, there is another dimension to reality. Often called eternity or heaven, “the other side” is God’s realm. While we don’t understand what’s “over there,” we get small insights now and then. Here’s an example of that reality that also brings a lesson to be remembered.

            Cardinal James Hickey, Archbishop of Washington, had been included in a VIP tour of Auschwitz Concentration Camp in Poland. With dread, he began a tour of the Nazi execution facility. The priest walked through the shower area used for gassing and on back to the crematoriums. Cardinal Hickey stared at the ovens where millions went up in smoke. Ashes and pieces of bone were still laying on the gurney.

            Overwhelmed by the ghastly sight, the priest stuck his hand in the ashes and began to intercede for the victims that died there. His profound and emotional prayer arose from the depth of his soul. As he prayed, he realized another group had come in and he must respect their visit. Father Hickey felt them coming closer. When he looked over his shoulder, the priest was startled that a group of men in black and white striped prison suits had now walked close and surrounded him. He assumed they must be dressed to portray former prisoners for visitors sake.

            They immediately began talking in different languages that Cardinal Hickey couldn’t understand. Polish, Russian, Yiddish, German; they kept trying to tell him something. “I’m sorry,” the priest said. ”I don’t understand.” He pulled his hand out of the oven. The group of men vanished!

            The priest was totally shaken. Never, never had he experienced anything like these apparitions! Father Hickey simply couldn’t digest what he had experienced. He staggered out of the death camp and returned to his hotel room where he decided rather than returning to Washington, he would go to Rome. A friend of Pope John Paul II, he had to talk with the Supreme Pontiff to gain some insight into this experience that continued to haunt him.

            When he met privately with the Pope, Cardinal Hickey related the whole story. Knowing the Pope was Polish and had lived through the terrors of WWII, he asked what it all meant.
            “It has happened before,” John Paul II told him. “Others have seen these same apparitions.”

            “But what does it mean?”

            The Pope said thoughtfully. “They are saying this must never happen again. We must all do what we can to stop it from ever recurring.”

            A message for all of us.

            Don’t forget that there is another dimension and your prayers cross that line into eternity. The possibilities of what can happen are endless. Don’t be fearful of reaching out to touch God’s world. It will touch you back.

AND THEN SHE DIED BUT…

            During lunch with Phyllis Skocypec this week, she began to relate an experience that deeply affected her mother’s life. For over a decade, we had often shared many mutual discoveries. Many times Phyllis had taken mission trips to Appalachia to help people struggling with poverty. Sometimes we talked about near-death encounters with people we had known. The subject came up again.

            Near-death situations aren’t new, although in the past people generally didn’t talk about theses incidences fearing they would be thought to be weird or deranged. Afterall, being pronounced dead and then showing up again is not exactly the generally expected norm. However, during recent decades, even science has come to understand near-death reversals in a more competent way. Here is what happened to Beatrice Long.

            Faced with serious surgery, Beatrice was wheeled into the operating room. During her procedure, her problem became more complicated and worsened. “We’re losing her!” The nurse called out frantically.

            “Hurry! Hurry!” The doctor called out. “Get a syringe, a long needle.”

            No matter what they did, Beatrice’s vital signs continued to diminish. Finally, her body completely stopped functioning. The staff rushed to apply emergency procedures but were too late. For around four minutes Beatrice Long was dead.

            But where was she?

            Beatrice could see people standing around her. Although she didn’t recognize any of them as their faces seemed to be blurred, or hidden, they seemed warm, friendly, welcoming. Bernice intuitively knew she was in heaven. As she looked around, Beatrice discovered a young boy approaching.

            She looked again. The boy was Carlie! Her nephew had died at age seven when he was struck by a car many years ago. Carlie walked up to Beatrice and placed a Jesus ring in her hand.  (A Jesus ring is a crucifix bent to curl around the finger.)

            And then Beatrice was abruptly back in her body. The medical staff were astonished. Later she looked up from her bed and Phyllis was sitting by her side. “I’ve really been in heaven.” she said.

            Whatever you accept in these near-death stories, they ring with self-authenticating truth. Beatrice had met once again a long passed relative. She had been in heaven.

            A wonder? A miracle? No question about it. just all part of God’s plan. And that includes you!

Part 2

            I keep being amazed by the encounters people have with angels. Eileen Freeman’s whole life was changed by her angelic experience when she was a child. Rather than call these visitations a “miracle,” Eileen called them a “wonder.” These “wonders” have guided her life ever since. Her books Angelic Healing and Touched By Angels were written to help others discover the same dimension. You can find the same too!

            As an adult, Eileen had been diagnosed with cancer (which horrified her of course) but still she had to attend a science fiction convention. She kept blaming herself for not doing what she might have done to prevent the disease. Maybe if she had lost more weight, the cancer wouldn’t have developed. She kept blaming herself. As she sat in the lobby of the hotel, Eileen’s self-incrimination continued.

            Suddenly, Eileen realized a woman was sitting next to her. Tall and middle-aged, the woman spoke with a Caribbean accent. With a warm smile on her face, the woman said, “Do you want to talk about it?”

            “I, what, uh, up, huh?” Eileen sounded shocked.

            “You’re in some kind of trouble, dear, aren’t you?” The woman began to explain that she noticed Eileen seemed to be in a struggle. She suggested they have some tea and talk about the problem. “Mint tea please,” she told the server.

            “Hmm, my favorite,” Eileen thought.

            The woman immediately explained that Eileen must trust God. If Eileen asked for help, she would find it. She must stop blaming herself because she didn’t create the problem. Stop being afraid because fear only delays healing. The woman quoted a biblical verse, “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who reverence him and delivers them.” With that the woman explained she had to leave.

            Eileen realized she hadn’t even asked the woman’s name and how could she have known so much about her? Remembering she needed to pay for the tea, Eileen called for the waitress. “I didn’t notice anyone sitting with you,” the waitress explained. “No, no one was with you. Oh, and the management said the tea is on the house.”

            Without any seeming knowledge of Eileen’s sickness, the woman had offered a message from God. No one else had seen her sitting with Eileen. The woman’s message proved to be amazingly helpful in curing Eileen’s illness. Later when a group picture was taken of people attending the conference, the woman wasn’t in the photo. She had just vanished. A wonder indeed!

            In these perilous times, everyone needs someone to show up and give us encouragement. How about having an angel in a human suit sit down beside you? Possible? Certainly is! Keep your eyes open. You never know who might show up.

AND THEN THE ANGEL APPEARED…

            Last week, I noted that I run into more angel encounters than any other type of miracle story. Angels certainly are evidence of the supernatural dimension that exists just beyond our touch but is always there. You will be amazed if you start to believe they are here and around you all the time… and extremely interested in your needs!

            Here’s an example.

            In October 1991, Robin Naylor gave birth to a child. The doctors discovered a serious chromosomal defect and the baby was immediately raced to another hospital better equipped to deal with such an issue. Robin and her husband were devastated and struggled to know how to deal with the situation. Their world had been turned upside down.

            After thinking, praying, struggling, Robin’s husband confessed he was exhausted and needed to go home for much needed sleep. She was left alone to think and worry about what might lay ahead. Desolation set in and Robin was certain no one had ever experienced her trauma.

            Enter a nurse named Jan.

            Cheerful and efficient, Jan appeared to be the nurse assigned to assist Robin. She seemed to know a great deal about the baby’s problem. “I had to care for a baby with a similar defect,” Nurse Jan related. “I know what you are going through.  You’ll find it difficult to leave the hospital and not take the baby with you. Please know that you can talk with me anytime.”

            Robin was surprised how much their conversations helped. The nurse offered important insights and Robin drew strength from their talks. Finally, the baby was transferred back to the original hospital and Robin was released to go home alone. Later Robin wanted to come back and find Nurse Jan to thank her for how significantly she had helped. The nurse had really carried her through. Robin inquired at the nurse’s station where she could find Nurse Jan.

            “I’m sorry,” the head nurse replied. “We don’t have anyone here by that name. Never have had.”

            “But you must,” Robin protested. “She was so important to me.”

            “I’m sorry,” the nurse repeated. No one named Jan ever worked here.”

            Robin insisted on seeing her medical chart. There on the chart for that day were the initials ‘J.S.’, although the hospital never employed anyone with those initials.

            What occurred? Robin realized that Jan had been an angel sent to bring encouragement at the lowest time in her life. I have to tell you that such happens all the time. Seems like angels can put on human suits when they need to do their physical work among us. Could one be standing around you just waiting to help? Certainly! Keep your spiritual eyes open.

WHEN THE ANGEL APPEARED…

            Encountering an angel might not be considered a miracle, but it would certainly be a show stopping experience!  I possibly run into more angel encounters than any other miracle story. Their appearances stand out as a testimony to the supernatural dimension that exists just beyond our touch. They are certainly here and around all the time. Nothing jars an agnostic like discovering an angel at work in his or her own life. Here’s a couple of examples of what experiencing the angelic can mean.

            Carol Sintay was a regular church member and worship was part of her life. Her trip for a medical check-up produced a shocking result. A large tumor was discovered on one of her ovaries. The physician was certain Carol had cancer. The doctor believed the growth had attached to her colon and possible other internal organs. Even though she was in the middle of a semester in her master’s degree program, the doctor saw no other alternative. Three surgeons concurred that Carol must be operated on immediately.

            When the word spread about her impending disaster, the elders in Carol’s church came to pray. Gathering around her bed, they anointed her with oil, and prayed for healing. They called on the angels to protect and guide her. She was ready for the operation.

            As the three surgeons opened her body, they couldn’t understand what they were not seeing. There was no tumor. The surgeon who had clearly seen the growth on an ultrasound projection as well as on an x-ray searched frantically for the tumor. It was simply gone.

            Do these interventions happen all the time and we just don’t hear about them? Often people just don’t know what to say after an encounter. Sometimes they fear people will conclude they are whacko. Actually, they are the sanest of all.

 Here’s another example. After a serious car wreck, Mary (a pseudonym for privacy sake) was rushed to intensive care and not expected to live. After several days, a visitor was allowed into ICU. To her surprise, Mary looked fine and far from what the doctors expected.

            The friend inquired how she was doing. Mary said in a straight forward manner. “I’m going to be okay. An angel has been sitting at the foot of the bed all day.”

            Most of the time, our experience of angels is indirect or unrecognized. But those moments happen like Carol and Mary discovered. Recipients know their lives will never be the same again. Next time you find yourself in a bind, don’t hesitate to call on your guardian angel to help. We all have one. Your friend will be there.
