MIRACLES NEVER CEASE
Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.
DEALING WITH DEATH
Father Rick Thomas lived a fascinating life. A Jesuit, his concern for the poor, the disposed, and the needy produced a life filled with significant impact that helped a multitude of people. Recently I was reading Richard Dunstan’s book A Poor Priest for the Poor. Dunstan traces the path that wound through the depths of El Paso and across the river into Juarez, Mexico. You would find the story fascinating.
In 1978, the Charismatic Movement swept across America. One of the consequences was a conference on the Holy Spirit held at Notre Dame. Father Rick Thomas was touched by this outpouring. What followed was amazing.
A 47-year-old Juarez woman suddenly fainted. Everyone was upset although her condition didn’t seem to be much out of the ordinary. One of the Daughters of Charity was also a registered nurse and resuscitation expert. When she returned to the house, she was immediately called on to make sure the woman’s pulse was okay. At that moment, the nurse realized that the women had stopped breathing and there were no vital signs.
Father Thomas had been taking a nap, but the nurse woke him in a panic. She knew disaster was unfolding. The nurse started mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. When their was no response, she sat the woman up and performed the Heimlich maneuver. The nurse quickly realized their was another problem. As she was blowing into the women’s mouth to reach her lungs, the women’s cheeks were swelling, but no air was going to her lungs. This had happened with another patient and even though a doctor was working on the resuscitation, the patient died. The nurse knew the clock was ticking and time had virtually run out.
Through the impact of the Notre Dame conference, Father Thomas had learned about something called “the spirit of death.” Through the power of the Holy Spirit he had heard that we have power over that spirit. If the women’s time had not come, he needed to exercise that command.
Father Rick laid his hands on the woman and prayed, “Spirit of death, I cast you out in Jesus’ name.”
The woman abruptly took a sudden breath and began to regurgitate. Her breathing became normal. Father Rick took her by the hand and slowly she got to her feet. After a couple minutes of rest, she returned to her normal life. Father Rick never emphasized the event as he accepted it as a normal part of a Christian life simply following the example set by Jesus.
Do you have the capacity to dispel such “spirits of evil?” Sure you do. The Holy Spirit is the answer. Allow Him to work … and the results are always wonderful!
