UNEXPECTED GIFTS WITH GRACE

As I talked with people who had miraculous experiences, I have picked up stories of people who also developed additional gifts of grace as they came into a new or deepened relationship with the Holy Spirit. Sometimes these spiritual endowments almost defied imagination. Here’s an unusual example from Peru.

Martin de Porres was born into a world of prejudice, but this black man turned rejection into faith, not friction. Few Peruvians would accept a mixed-race illegitimate child, so the deck was stacked against de Porres from the moment he was born. His father, a Spanish nobleman, refused to marry his mother, a freed slave from Panama. De Porres and his younger sister, Juana, grew up poor, socially demeaned, and unacknowledged by their father. To heal the wounds of rejection, he plunged into the Christian faith. The result was remarkable.

Associates said they saw him levitate. He could communicate with animals and be in two places simultaneously. Yet, in Lima, Peru, Martin de Porres was reviled by many simply because of the color of his skin. Local law even forbade him from becoming a full member of the religious order to which he devoted his life. He was able to join a Dominican monastery, wear the robes, and live among the other residents—but only as a worker who cleaned and did laundry. Martin made it his lifelong objective and practice to turn prejudice into spiritual passion.

De Porres became a most remarkable person. As he moved among the people, he soon developed a reputation for redeeming people. Frugal and humble, he was so devout that after his death eighty-four miracles were attributed to him.

De Porres was said to be able to go through locked doors. He was spotted in faraway Mexico and Japan, despite never having left Peru. He and a group of novices found themselves miles from the monastery and late to prayer, he asked them to take his hands. In an instant, the group was back home.

De Porres’s boundless compassion extended to the lowliest of creatures. He was told to set out poisons to get rid the monastery of pests, but it pained de Porre to do so. He went into the garden and called to the rats quietly. He warned them not to eat the poison and said he would be happy to feed them in the garden every day, so long as they stopped bothering the monks. The rats behaved themselves.

How do you relate to such descriptions? I admit that I would have been skeptic if I had not seen wild birds fly down on Agnes Sanford’s veranda and take a piece of bread out of her hand. Agnes had powerful spiritual abilities to related to nature. My time with her taught me that Martin De Porres’s gifts were examples of how grace can transform our abilities, even when the impartations are unexpected. How about you? An encouragement here? You never can tell. Remember to expect the unexpected.

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

A NEW YEAR WITH HOPE

During the last twelve months, I have been blessed to run into people who have experienced the hand of God touching their lives. What a divine accident! Over and over, I’ve bumped into recipients of a touch of grace. Subsequently, these encounters inspire me to look to the coming year with hope.

At the same time, I know the holidays are difficult for people with losses that can never be recovered. Good people are out there still searching for God’s intervention. My experience says, “Don’t give up and stop hoping. The best is yet to be.”

Here’s an example. The Christmas story ends with Joseph having an inspired dream, guiding him to leave Israel with Mary and the baby. Joseph would tell us to keep dreaming because God often speaks through our dreams. Of course, most of our dreams are only our thought processes ordering and reordering our waking experiences. However, don’t discount your dreams as an avenue to the miraculous.

My next-door neighbors Wiley and Carrie found this to be true. Born with a heart defect, their son Garret struggled through eighteen-years of medical issues. He actually lived more than three years longer that most children with this problem. Nevertheless, Carrie was devastated when Garret came to the end of his life. A woman of strong and determined faith, she was heartbroken.  Struggling with the meaning of his death, she had this dream.

Wiley and Carrie were standing on a bridge holding baby Garret. As they crossed the bridge, Garret began to grow until when they reached the other side and he had become a full grown eighteen-year young man.

Carrie looked in front of them and saw another bridge, old, broken, virtually destroyed. She couldn’t imagine how they would ever get across. Garret would have an impossible time on that worn span.

Abruptly, Jesus appeared standing next to Garret. They smiled and suddenly both were gone. Disappeared!

As Carried dreamed the scene, she realized that her son no longer had to face a destructive bridge, a struggling life with a broken body. Though it was a severe mercy, her heavenly Father had spared Garret and the family found a devastating journey.  Even with their heart-break, the family had encountered God’s love intervening.

What would Carrie tell you as you face the coming year? Don’t stop dreaming and hoping, God is always there even in unseen and unexpected ways. Not always understood, miracles keep happening.

And for you? Remember to …expect the unexpected!

THE GREATEST MIRACLE OF ALL

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

THE GREATEST MIRACLE OF ALL

In all the hub-bub of rushing through departments stores, worrying if the packages you sent got there, and fighting the traffic, it’s easy to forget what Christmas is really all about.  Trading presents, watching the Christmas tree lights sparkle, and fixing a turkey for the family gathering can obscure one of the most important insights of the season.

Christmas is about the greatest miracle of all.

Let’s push the school Christmas pageants aside and close our eyes to the football bowl games for a moment. The story begins in a stinking barn with the pungent smell of stale hay that would make a pregnant woman nauseated. Probably, Joseph had to find a shovel to push the animal manure out of the way. Animals would have watched indifferently while two strangers struggled to find a soft place for the woman overcome with pain to lay down because the birth would wait no longer. Poor people trying to survive on the outskirts of the world.

And what does it all mean?

We are all poor people living precariously on the margins of this world. The nativity remains a parable of the human condition before redemption has been born in us. The forlorn dirty barn is a construct of our situation, our emptiness in an indifferent world. While we like to think of ourselves as the prosperous, the conquerors, the almighty, people with big bank accounts, but that Bethlehem barn is the true portrait of our poverty and limitations.

And yet in our bleakness and bareness, God comes. His appearance has absolutely nothing to do with all those things we consider to be so important. Where does God meet us? In the emptiness of our broken lives.

And therein is the miracle.  The God of love asks nothing but our love. So, a baby is born in the cold of a winter night and 2,000 years later the world still comes to the manager. In the midst of our need, there is really no other place to go. We can stand up because we first bowed down.

What a strange story. What an unexpected story. What a miraculous story.

ANGELS COME IN MANY COLORS

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

Robert Wise explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

ANGELS COME IN MANY COLORS

Last week I suggested that you take Mark’s Gospel and make two columns on a sheet of paper putting what happened on one side when the event wasn’t miraculous and on the other, write when a miracle followed. My prediction was that you would discover that 60 to 70 percent of the ministry of Jesus focused on miracles. I wanted all readers to discover miracles were normative in the ministry of Jesus. BECAUSE they still are today in spite of most people not recognizing the fact.

Here’s an example.

In the Christmas season, we sing and talk about the intervention of God with the angels. Maybe one is as close as your Christmas tree.

Recently, I was talking with Lisa King-Kirkland. Lisa is a nurse in the Integris Hospital system who can slip a needle in your arm so gently you don’t even notice it. Lisa was telling me about her discovery that angels come in all different colors.

As a child, Lisa and her sisters Melanie and Angela were driving through Houston, Texas on an inter-state highway when their mother Doris Murthy missed thire turn off. Not having any idea what to do next, Doris continued down the highway. Suddenly, she noticed steam coming up under the car’s hood.  Lost in a huge metropolitan city, Doris had no idea what to do but pull off at the next exit and pray for help.

At that moment, she noticed a car following her.

When she pulled over to stop, the other car did the same. Doris was frightened. A nice looking black man got out and walked up.

“Do you need some help, ma’am,” the man asked.

“Do I ever,” Doris said. “Steam is pouring out of my car.  I’m lost, and I have three little girls in the back seat. I don’t even know how to lift the hood.”

“Let me see what I can do,”

The man walked around to the front of the car. The hood immediately raised and he began doing something underneath. After a couple of minutes, he shut the hood. “Your radiator was low. There wasn’t enough water in the pump, but I’ve got it fixed now.” He shut the hood. “Let me tell you how to get back to where you want to go. You need to get back on the inter-state going back to where you missed it.” He offered a few other important tips to get her to her destination.”

Doris sat there amazed at how quicky her problem had been solved. She realized she needed to thank him and got out of her car. There was no car behind her. There was no man who had helped. There was nothing but an empty space.

Doris couldn’t believe her eyes.

She got back in the car and said to Lisa and her sisters, “The Lord has just provided us with a real angel!”

Now years later, Lisa’s life is still touched by that experience and she certainly believes in angels. Lisa wants you to know angels come in many different colors… and to keep looking for them.

RECOVERING TRUST

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

RECOVERING TRUST

Here’s an exercise for you. Take Mark’s Gospel and make two columns on a sheet of paper. On one side put what happened that wasn’t miraculous and on the other place when a miracle followed. You will discover that 60 to 70 percent of the ministry of Jesus focused on miracles. They were normative!

During my many conversations with people who have encountered the miraculous, I often found they needed to find or recover a new sense of God’s mercy. Rather than floundering in doubt, they needed to stand up in defiance. Here’s an example of a family in Ireland who made the transition.

When Mike and Aster Mullin’s son Andrew began displaying unusual symptoms and losing weight, they took him to their family physician for a checkup. “The doctors examined him but couldn’t find anything wrong,” Aster said. “But I knew something wasn’t right. When I found the lump on his back, the cold hand of fear gripped my heart.” The discovery of that lump would initiate a storm of tests and a final diagnosis of stage 4 neuroblastoma.

The Mullins soon discovered that the cancer in Andrew’s body had affected nearly every bone, including his spinal column. In the midst of the battle for their son’s life, Mike and Aster struggled to hold on to their faith.

“I’d been told all my life that God was in control, that He had a purpose for everything we experienced in life, but my heart was confused,” Mike. “I couldn’t understand how I, as an imperfect parent, could have more compassion for my son than God did. Did I have to beg God for mercy? At one point, I remember thinking, Maybe, if we got 10,000 people praying, God would respond,” Mike recalled.

“I just couldn’t figure out why we were still praying at all,” Aster added. “I mean if everything in our lives was set in stone, if God controlled everything, then why bother?” “We were in survival mode,” Mike said.

The Mullin’s then received a CD series from the Andrew Wommack Ministries instructing them on how to use their faith to face Andrew’s condition. What they found boosted their faith! “We discovered that healing is a part of our salvation and that we could lay hands on the sick and see them recover.”

The Mullins immediately laid hands on their son’s legs and arms and commanded health into his bones. Several days later, new test results came in, and Andrew’s bones were completely cancer-free! As they continued to learn more about healing and their authority as believers, the Mullins prayed for their son again.

“We commanded cancer to leave his body in the name of Jesus and stood on God’s promise that no poison or other deadly thing would harm Andrew, despite the progressive treatment he was undergoing (Mark 16:18).” Then the doctors called to confirm that Andrew’s whole body was cancer-free and that all his organs were healthy and functioning normally!

There’s nothing magical about the miraculous. However, when we access the dimension of God’s empowerment, the results can be just as amazing. The Mullin’s will certainly testify to that fact.

DOES GOD STILL SPEAK TO US?

DOES GOD STILL SPEAK TO US?

You bet! Recently I found an email that came in 2012 that I had overlooked. Cheril Hurley shared an experience that meant a great deal to her. Because her discoveries also involved me, I ,too, was grateful for what she learned. People often ask about whether it’s possible to have God speak to them. My discovery is that the speech of the Almighty comes in many different ways, but our heavenly Father speaks when we are listening.

Here’s what Cherl wrote.

“Robert, I just found you on Facebook to my delight. Several years ago I spoke with you on the phone regarding a Divine revelation I received as I was awokened from my sleep. I was on a renewed quest to find my faith again and spiritual heritage that I had left behind in my youth. The message (the revelation) I received form the Lord was a simple and profound one: “READ ROBERT WISE”.

Well, I had never heard of you or even if you had written something. Now my quest led me to some investigating after an “audible voice” commanded me to search you out. There was no Internet back then, so I went to a bookstore in the mall and requested they look up an author by the name Robert Wise. To my astonishment the clerk pulled up a list of books you had written and the latest was the series “People of the Covenant”. I had absolutely no idea what I was about to read or the adventure I was about to embark on but I was so excited that the Lord had spoken to me and actually told me what I was to do.

I remember feeling so humbled and blessed that he chose me to tell this story to. What would it all mean and where would it take me. Now I knew I was on a Divine mission but for what? To make a very long story short, I devoured the books and that series changed my life forever. The Lord gave me a “heart for the Jewish people” and because of that I’ve not stopped questing for more and more. Because of your gifts of knowledge, wisdom, and writing skills and a Divine message of obedience given to me, I have been challenged and tested, and proved to be a lover and supporter of GOD’s chosen people and the land of Israel. Thank you for the most exciting journey of a lifetime.”

Thank you Cheril for encouraging us not only to listen but to act on what we hear.

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

BE THANKFUL

What should we be thankful for? Well, if nothing else you can be grateful you’re not a turkey. It is a matter of perspective.

Some years ago, I was in the magnificent National Cathedral in Mexico City when a beggar walked in from the zocalo. With no shoes and ragged clothes, the man must have struggled to exist. Yet, he walked into one of the side chapels and knelt on the stone floor, he lifted his arms to heaven to thank God.

A beam of light shown down from the clerestory windows far above and fell around the beggar like a spotlight. As I watched from behind a huge pillar, I thought that the blessing of heaven must be descending on that man.

He had so little, but so much.

Regardless of how this year has been, we all have so much to be thankful for. If nothing else, the light of heaven still shines on us even when we don’t recognize it. On this weekend of remembrance, let us all be thankful.

So much has been given.

FINDING HEALING

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

Robert Wise explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

FINDING HEALING

In talking with people who have experienced the touch of God, I have been exploring why some people do not have the same results. In subsequent blogs we will explore some of these results. One factor that has stood out are folks who don’t endure. Some people in need simply aren’t persistent. Here is an example of a person who kept chasing a touch of grace.

Melanie Davis said, “I was just a Christian on cruise control, rolling along with whatever came my way. I loved God and knew He loved me, but I thought I was here to just work on myself, always trying to live up to His expectations.”

Ever since she was a little girl, Melanie Davis struggled with severe allergies to all sorts of things—dust, weeds, dog dander…you name it! Even with a daily routine of capsules, Melanie found it difficult just to breathe and sleep. “I kept everyone awake at night,” recalls Melanie, “and that June 2007, it was particularly bad. The whites of my eyes were swollen, so much so that they covered part of my pupils. I spent my days in a fog because of how bad the allergies were, and it didn’t seem like things would ever change.”

Sitting in the back of the room with her tissue box in hand, Melanie spent the first night of a Summer Bible Conference trying not to fall asleep. Miserable and full of antihistamine, she listened as the pastor began telling a story about a very young girl who was laying her hands on people and seeing them healed.

The speaker asked if someone was struggling with breathing and seasonal-type things, giving them trouble sleeping. If so, they should stand up. At that moment, Melanie felt like there were arms under hers lifting her to her feet. She stood, along with a few others around the room, when the pastor called out, ‘Well, there’s Melanie Davis! Good to see you!”’ She began turning every shade of red.

The speaker then directed those nearby to lay hands on those who were standing. With her eyes closed, Melanie could feel the warmth as hands were laid on her shoulders, surrounding her in prayer.

I don’t remember what the speaker said or did,” remarks Melanie, “but at the end of the prayer, my eyes popped wide open. I could clearly see everything around me. My eyes didn’t itch at all, and I could feel the swelling leave. I was stunned and started crying. Then I looked to my left, and there was that young girl the speaker was telling us about. She had prayed for me! I was healed, head to toe, as quickly as the snap of my fingers.

“I knew that night that God was real. I figured He probably was with me, but now I knew He was alive and that I was healed! Don’t be discouraged. You don’t need to work for it; it’s already there, just waiting for you to believe it. I may not have all the answers, but I do know that God wants us to be like 3 John 2, in good health.”(I pray that you may enjoy good health … even as your soul is getting along well)

Melanie knew her healing had stuck like glue when she went on a bike ride in the same area where she had struggled to breathe before, and had no problems of any kind—except maybe keeping up with her kids! She can walk through a pasture, rub her face in a bed of weeds, mow, camp, fish, and cuddle with a dog without one single sniffle or sneeze. In the past eight years, she has not sneezed, and her eyes have not swelled.

Melanie came with expectations and put herself in a place where empowerment could follow. An exciting example to follow.
