MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

AN UNEXPECTED DISCOVERY WHEN …

In a recent blog, I reported the medical discovery that if the heart stops the brain doesn’t die but goes into hibernation for some time. This sheds new scientific light on many of the near-death experiences I have reported over the years. Because of this breakthrough, Mark Gober became interested in understanding near-death experiences for which science has no explanation.

Rather than relate a miraculous experience, today I want to share a new insight. Next week I’ll have another miracle story for you. For those who follow these amazing stories, you will find confirmation that you are on the right track. Moreover, you will discover more undergirding truth for your own quest.

Having studied economics at Princeton with the intention of becoming an investment banker, Mark Gober realized science couldn’t explain these remarkable near-death journeys into eternity.  His quest for insight caused him to write The End of Upside Down Thinking: Dispelling the myth that the Brain Produces Consciousness and the Implications for Everyday Living.

During his academic years, Mark Gober thought about the universe and human existence. Questions like whether there is meaning to life haunted him. As he pondered these issues, scientific proof convinced him that psychic phenomenon were real. Experts working independently of each other were coming to the same conclusion. Gober studied reports of near-death experiences where a blind person could see and the deaf could hear. As he wrestled with these accounts, Mark began to come to a conclusion. Maybe the missing piece in our understanding was how we perceived consciousness.

He was shocked to find that academic institutions like the University of Virginia were studying this exact problem. Gober began to believe that there is a consciousness outside of our brain and physical bodies.  If all of this is true, he realized we need to make a paradigm shift. Science was telling him there is something spiritual in the universe that is beyond our typical senses. Gober had once thought anything spiritual or religious was primitive superstition. Setting those ideas aside, he saw that meaning is built into the fabric of reality and there is purpose to our lives. He concludes, “The more I learn, the less I feel that I know. But one thing I feel certain about is that there’s more for science to discover.”

While this blog is not an account of a miraculous occurrence, it offers consolation to my readers. Science is catching up with us. These unusual stories have been giving us important clues to the Reality that transcends this world.  You can believe with confidence that you are following an eternal pattern that is at the heart of our universe. Don’t back down but charge straight ahead. Faith will take you beyond where science has gone.

            Remember. Miracles never cease.

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

THE AIRPLANE SMASHED INTO THE TREES THEN…

Recently I was talking with my agent Greg Johnson when he handed me a book. “I think you’ll find this story right up your alley, Robert. It’s the account of a small airplane that crashed after taking off from the Burbank Airport. Dale Black has written his story of surviving the crash that took the lives of two of his friends.” He handed me a paperback entitled Flight to Heaven published by Bethany House. As I thumbed through the pages, I found Dale Black’s story fascinating.

When the twin-engine plane took off, Dale Black knew they were ascending way too slow. His friend Gene was a most competent pilot. Surely nothing could be wrong, but the other friend Chuck recognized the same problem. They weren’t climbing!

Suddenly pine trees began to appear in the windshield.  The airplane wasn’t going to get above the trees. Dale knew they were running into a disaster. The plane clipped the tops of the trees. Dale braced himself for the impact. They smashed into the trees!

Pieces of the airplane scattered everywhere. Chuck and Gene had been thrown from their seats and lay on the ground. They were gone.

When the paramedics arrived, they found Dale staggering through the rubble in a state of shock. His hands were holding his blood-drenched face with a piece of the airplane sticking out of his head. The ambulance rushed to the hospital and wheeled Dale into the emergency room. Then, it happened.

Dale Black found himself hovering in mid-air looking down on his body. He could watch the medical team in a flurry of activity trying to save his life. When they moved him onto a metal table, Dale continued to watch from the ceiling high above. As the team worked feverishly, he seemed detached from what was happening to his body. Dale felt no anxiety, no pain, no stress, nothing.

As they worked, Dale continued to look around the room. He could see the medical equipment, the floor, the medical instruments. He watched detached from all pain. Abruptly, a memory flashed through his mind. He was a little boy in the fifth grade who had Jesus as a friend and loved him.  Then he started rising. Moving away from his body and going ever higher. Steadily upward.

Three days later, Dale Black awoke from a coma.  He wasn’t sure how he got there. Bandaged and still physically struggling, he was alive. Dale Black had gone through a life changing experience because by miraculous power he had survived the crash that killed his two friends.

In other blogs I have written about similar out of body experiences. They remain as an assurance that eternal life exceeds anything that happens to us physically. These encounters encourage us to persevere by faith each day in anticipation of the future.

            Remember. Miracles never cease.

HE WAS DEAD UNTIL…

A featured story on the evening news this week was about the new scientific investigation into what happens when people die. One of the most recent discoveries is that when the heart stops beating, the brain goes into hibernation for a period of time.  Medical research personnel have discovered the experiences I have been researching for a number of years. My book CROSSING THE THRESHOLD OF ETERNITY contained the stories of what people discovered after they were pronounced medically dead and returned with an after-life experience. It appears science maybe catching up with theology!

Here’s another encounter that was reported in the Times of Israel this week in Israel.

Jose Hernandes had always been an avowed atheist. An engineer, Hernandes worked with only the hard facts and they didn’t seem to support the idea of a God or an afterlife. Logical explanations were all he needed … or so he thought. Hernandes was on a routine assignment when his certainty smashed into a wall.

His assignment was to repair an electrical problem from atop a bucket attached to a truck. The job was taking more time than expected and this forced him to run late. Below him on the ground was another man who worked as a safety because the job was dangerous. As the safety considered their job and started moving the truck, he didn’t realize what was coming up fast. A tree directly stood in front of them. Jose Hernandes above the in the bucket smashed into the tree. Jose’s vulnerability left him with multiple broken ribs and an ambulance rushing him to the hospital in critical condition.

The doctor’s worked frantically but Jose’s breathing stopped.  Although the medical staff worked desperately to save him, they were in a losing battle. Jose was sinking fast. Knowing how critical his condition was, Jose remembers praying, “If you get me through this, I’ll change.”

At that moment, Jose realized there was a mysterious presence in the room. A shadow appeared by the door. The shadow moved across the room and touched his toe. Immediately an overwhelming sense of relief, calm, peace and loved engulfed him. The shadow began to speak to Jose. Abruptly, Jose was suspended on the ceiling in a corner of the room watching the doctor work on his body.

Hernandes began flying and seeing cities below him, cities, forests and herds of wild animals. He was assured that he would see his children again and be reunited with his father. When he encountered his father, he realized that while we cannot express certain things here, on the other side we can. Jose had survived his own death.

Jose Hernandes renounced his atheism. His perspective was transformed. Jose shared his story on YouTube and spoke of his new belief and convictions. Wouldn’t it be something if the medical community discovered the validity and reality of such experiences?

GRIEF SWALLOWED HER UNTIL…

Mit and Mary Lou Parsons have been friends for years. Last week they invited me over for supper. Still struggling with jet lag from my trip back from Ireland, the invitation felt like a godsend as I was still trying to get myself fully functioning again. While dining, we started discussing miraculous experiences. Out of the clear blue, Mary Lou told me this story.

Fifteen-year-old Mary Lou had grown up in Billings, Montana. A normal high school age kid, she had a boy friend named Philip Lewis. Phil always wanted a particular sport coat which he finally got. Life seemed perfect.

A group of friends decided to take a boat trip down the Yellowstone Rive and float back to Billings. Unfortunately, the river was in flood stage but they went anyway.

On Saturday, Mary Lou got a phone call. One of the boys could take her to Columbus where she could join the trip. Mary Lou knew she could talk her mother into letting her go, but this time she hit a wall. Her mother wouldn’t allow it. She was absolutely definite. No!

Sunday afternoon Mary Lou got the phone call. Phillip had drowned in the Yellowstone River!

Mary Lou was crushed. As the details came in, she was overwhelmed. Apparently in the flooding river, the boat had capsized. Phillip stayed with the craft, hoping to get it to shore but the current swept him next to a log and the vessel smashed into him, crushing his chest.

When Mary Lou went to the funeral home, she found Phillip resting in that sport coat he loved. She was broken beyond words.

While preparing for the funeral, another call came in. Her beloved grandmother had just passed away. Two deaths in two days? She couldn’t stand the losses. Never before had she experienced death and now darkness seemed to swallow her. The pain was uncontrollable. Laying in her bed that night, Mary Lou sobbed. She didn’t think she could stand bearing the tragedies. With tears streaming down her face, she cried out, “God help me!”

Abruptly a great hand appeared in the darkness and pressed against her chest. Mary Lou knew it was the hand of God. The gentle pressure of this giant hand seemed to emanate solace and comfort, taking her staggering grief away.  A comfort beyond words flooded through her body. She knew God was with her and she could endure the unendurable.

The hand of God is still reaching into brokenness when hope seems to be gone. The contact always brings a miracle. When you need consolation, just reach for the touch. Our heavenly Father seems to work best when all else is gone.

            Remember. Miracles never cease.

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE

I’ve just returned from eleven days in Ireland, traveling from Dublin to Belfast and all sites in-between. The trip had many dimensions, including talking with the locals, visiting historic sites that stretched back to 10,000 B.C., and spending time at shrines like the Apparition of Mary at a little church in Knock. I continue to explore these mysteries and miracles that happen with Protestants, Roman Catholics, Jews, and even people who did not believe until they had an experience that opened their eyes to eternity.

I continue to be amazed by these divine encounters that I can never fully understand or explain. Nevertheless, I am confounded by how frequently they occur. Even in these times of doubt and secular scorn, they happen everywhere. Here’s an example.

The Jerusalem Post reported Jewish Shiv Grewal was eating in a restaurant with his wife Alison near their south-east London residence when he suffered a cardiac arrest. By the time paramedics arrived, it appeared his heart had stopped beating. Shiv said, “I knew somehow that I was dying.” For seven minutes Shiv Grewal was dead.

Grewal details how he felt profoundly detached from his physical body as if he occupied an ethereal void. Suddenly he recounted experiencing emotions and sensations without the constraints of a human form. Grewal likened this sensation to weightless swimming in the water and recalled, “I felt like I walked over the moon and could see meteorites and the whole space.”

Interestingly enough in Moreland and Haberman’s Immortality: The Other Side of Death, they found very similar descriptions from most persons who had near-death experiences. Over half describe an unworldly or heavenly realm. More than half met deceased relatives or angelic beings. Many people found it difficult to describe what they experienced. One person said, “There are no human words that even come close.” These authors noted that often there is a difference between what people report and how they later interpret it. However, when the authors dug into what people were saying, they discovered what they encountered was consistent with what Scripture reports is to come.

Gives you something to ponder. Yes! Maybe, just maybe, the best is yet to be.

            Remember. Miracles never cease.

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

SHE SAW NO HOPE UNTIL …

Last week I shared an encounter in Tulsa, Oklahoma when I was talking with one of my colleagues about some of her spiritual experiences. Margie McCaslin is a clergyperson and bishop in Denver, Colorado. I was fascinated by one of her spiritual experiences. She had one of those moments that turns a secularist on their ear. Margie reached back into the First Century and took a page right out of the Book of Acts.

A friend wanted Margie to go with her to Switzerland because her husband couldn’t go. The friend had a niece in the German speaking sector, and they could visit her. Even though Margie couldn’t speak a word of German, the trip sounded like fun.

The niece had a boyfriend named Omar who spoke only German and didn’t understand any English. Nevertheless, when he learned Margie was a Christian clergyperson, he was enthusiastic to meet her. Omar knew virtually nothing about the Christian faith but wanted to learn about Jesus. The young man seemed to have an urgency about discovering what this rabbi was all about.

Margie was more than ready to share, but realized they had a serious communication problem. Neither one could understand the other. She began to pray fervently. “Lord, we’ve got a big complication. Omar can’t understand me, nor I him. Please help us connect.”

They sat down together and Margie took a deep breath. “You want to talk about Jesus?”

            “Yes,” Omar said.

Margie was taken back. How could he have understood her?”

“You know about Jesus of Nazareth from the Bible?”

Omar nodded his head. “Yes, I do.”

Margie was stunned. They were communicating perfectly. Just as in the Book of Acts on the Day of Pentecost, where there were a multitude of different languages but everyone understood saying, “we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues.” The exact experience was happening again.

Omar understood Margie’s every word and professed a new faith. He wanted her to baptize him. Even though it was late at night, they walked down to a lake in the dark, but a storm started blowing in. Nevertheless, Margie and Omar walked into the lake. There in the total darkness, she immersed him. As he came up out of the cold, cold water, a light abruptly bounced off the water.  But from where?

Omar immediately wanted to take Holy Communion. With the extreme time difference from America, Margie was exhausted. Nevertheless, a deeply touching service followed. Finally, at 3:00 in the morning, they went back to the hotel and parted company. Margie shut her hotel room door and whispered, “Please, God. My body hurts so bad. I’m exhausted. Please give me some energy.” She staggered into the shower.

When she stepped out dripping wet, Margie realized that all exhaustion had vanished. She was reenergized! God had moved again.

Pentecost was a long, long time ago? Not for Margie and Omar. And not so for us either.    Remember. Miracles never cease.

SHE HAD A HEART ATTACK, BUT …

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

SHE HAD A HEART ATTACK, BUT …

A week ago I was in Tulsa, Oklahoma participating in a consecration of a new bishop. As we were waiting for the service to begin, I was talking with one of my colleagues and we began sharing spiritual experiences. Margie McCaslin is a clergyperson and a bishop in Denver, Colorado. A sensitive and deeply caring friend, Margie and I discovered that we had once had parallel important spiritual encounters.

If secularists had been eves dropping on our conversation, they would have been startled by our journeys. Closed to the transcendent and eternal, secularly oriented people assume there is no such thing as Divine intervention. They are wrong.

Margie had discovered that in Holy Communion, we can experience the life of Christ. As the Sacrament becomes “The Real Presence of Christ,” his life flows into us. Because she had struggled with a heart condition as a child, the Sacrament was paramount.

During her childhood, Margie had a pulmonary condition resulting in a valve in her heart being too small. As a three-year old child, she had to undergo surgical procedures that were painful and scary. The result was Margie was on special medications from then on.

As an adult, Margie McCaslin felt called to the ministry and began pastoring a church. A couple in the church needed help moving so Margie and her husband Glenn showed up to help. She had to climb steep stairs carrying boxes up a flight of steps. As she reached the top, Margie suddenly knew she was having a heart attack. Crumbling to the floor, she started to pray. “Please help me! Lord, this is really inconvenient!”

Like a voice coming over a telephone, Margie heard, “Go down stairs. Don’t climb these stairs again. Just push the boxes in the truck around.” A strange answer for a person with a heart attack!

            But Margie obeyed.

She immediately called her cardiologist. He examined Margie and confirmed she did have a heart attack. She was immediately taken in for x-rays. Everyone was astonished. The doctor again confirmed Margie did have a heart attack, but now her heart was perfectly normal. No sign of the old problem.  She had obeyed and God had answered.

Later, Margie was praying and spiritually felt herself becoming one with Christ on the Cross.  As she knelt on the floor with her arms stretched out in a cruciform position, she knew the inspiration of the Holy Sacrament was working in her. She felt the Risen Christ speak. “My blood runs through you.” The result was a healing.

What the Church offers, helps us cross that divide between time and eternity. Never doubt how faith can carry you through the most difficult times.

            Remember. Miracles never cease.
