HOLY PLACES WHERE GRACE RUNS OUT

MIRACLE BLOG 423

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

I wrote in a recent story about gatherings where the Holy Spirit is intensely present. Sometimes these centers are churches, shrines, and sometimes people’s home where a small group gathers to pray and study. They come together in a unity of devotion, seeking the Holy Spirit. George and May Rawlings have such a fellowship. (names are anonymous for privacy sake)

George and May have worked to create a unified body of believers who pray fervently for any need. Every Sunday the unexpected happens. For example, a woman came one Sunday with kidney stones. Few illnesses are more painful than Jane’s problem. George and May noticed that the Bible speaks in a number of places about anointing with oil. Subsequently, they carried a special vial of olive oil that came from the Holy Land. The origin didn’t make the difference, but their trust and commitment did.

At the altar time, Jane came forward and knelt. May made the sign of the cross on Jane’s forehead with oil. Both pastors placed their hands on Jane’s head and prayed before she returned to her seat. The following week, Jane returned to the doctor for an exam. The result? The kidney stones had disappeared. Dissolved and left.

The members in George and May’s house church know that healing is a mystery and not predictable. However, they also know that openness to receive can be critical. When Alice came to their house church on Sunday, she was struggling with the fact that there was a family history of cancer, and her annual physical exam had not gone well.

The doctor’s response proved to be grim. “I’m afraid we’re dealing with cervical cancer,” he said. “We must begin treatment immediately.”

Alice knew what those words meant and was terrified. She immediately got in touch with May. Because she always prayed with expectancy, May started interceding at once. Fearing the worst, Alice returned to the doctor for whatever procedure that he would recommend.

The doctor walked briskly into the room, shaking his head. “Alice, I don’t know what to say, but you have no signs of cancer. None. End of story.”

Does this happen occasionally? No … all the time. When people stand near holy places, the overflow of grace is constant. The problem so many people have is that they lack assurance. The thought lurking in the back of their minds is ‘can’t happen to me.’ The truth is it doesn’t depend on you; it depends on God.

Draw near to a devout community of faith and the blessings will follow.
