FINDING HOLY PLACES

There are places where grace spills over. Churches, retreat centers,  shrines, sometimes simple settings where the reality of God pours through. Healings and recovery follow. You might want to look around and see what you can find. Recently, a friend was sharing their ministry and I realized their church had become one of these fountains of new life.

Hurting people had been showing up in their worship services. With regularity, various an sundry illnesses and brokenness simply disappeared. The clergy followed biblical guidelines, using the sacraments and liturgy in their worship. Struggling people began reporting that recoveries had followed. The congregation was consistently encouraged to “live into” their faith. Be consistent. Be devout.

During supper Revs. Gary and Helen Haskins  (anonymous names) shared with me what was occurring in their congregation. Gary and Helen had started the house church in their home. Gary had a secular job during the week and Helen covered many of the details. Their group of 25-50 people gathered each week to pray and seek the presence of their heavenly Father. The congregation strived to be faithful to their calling.

This emphasis had created a healing congregation. Without throwing a spotlight on anyone or anything, the Holy Spirit had settled over the gathered community and results followed.

On this particular Sunday morning, Helen and the congregation were in prayer when she felt moved to open her eyes. Helen saw the figure of the risen Christ standing in the midst of the congregation with His arms extended, stretched out over the people, offering empowerment and healing. Jesus walked among the congregation, blessing the intercessors.  Helen felt Jesus was saying, ‘People who are open will experience freedom.’

An older man had been standing in the back because he had severe painful back problems. He began proclaiming out loud, “I am open! I am open!” He rushed to the front of the congregation to announce, “All my pain is gone! I’ve experienced a healing!” The gentleman began crying because he was so relieved and surprised. People gathered around him in excitement. Members began turning to the altar and kneeling in prayer. One woman broke into tears. Openness had resulted in wholeness.

            “What’s wrong?” Helen asked.

She looked up with tears in her eyes. “I-I-ve had a serious problem with kidney stones.” She beamed. “They’re gone! Just left me!”

Seen or unseen, the risen Christ still walks among devout congregations. Look for one of those holy places and you’ll find the Spirit of healing and new life, a spring that never runs dry. The fountain is bubbling. Don’t be hesitant to find such a place wherever you live. The healing Christ is still there.
