MIRACLES NEVER CEASE

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

HOLDING THE HAND THAT WON’T LET GO

This past week I was talking with Dee Ann Green about her struggle with physical problems that began when she was twenty-five. As Dee Ann shared her lifelong struggle, I thought about the many people I’ve known who spend decades battling issues that brought pain and disability.

What happens when they don’t get well?

Let’s take a second look at Dee Ann’s story.  A schoolteacher, she had to struggle with what turned into multiple auto-memory issues. Then, her blood pressure began to drop and became out of control.  Her numbers sank to 40/30 which meant she couldn’t drive and at times even get out of bed.

For six months, she struggled and had two strokes with seizures that followed.  During the Christmas season Dee Ann couldn’t keep her blood pressure under control. Finally, she was rushed to the emergency room at the local hospital but her condition continued to deteriorate.

Dee Ann laid on the bed praying desperately for the intervention of God. A priest came to pray for her. She had grown up in the church and been a faithful Christian. The touch of the Holy Spirit had always been part of her life. Now, her need had become desperate. Her body temperature began dropping and fell to 92 degrees.

The nurses ran for help. A Code Blue was sounded.

Dee Ann fully realized how critical her situation had become. There was no potassium in her body and her heart had to have it. Her adrenal system had stopped. Even with her eyes closed, Dee Ann was fully aware that her body was about to stop. She would have preferred to have died at home, but that was now out of her control.

Everything fell into an absolute silence. Dee Ann knew she was slipping away. Out of the surrounding solitude, she heard a voice. “Hold my hand.”

Dee Ann knew that voice, that Speaker. She had grown up with the presence of the Lord. The voice of God spoke again. “Hold my hand.”

She reached out to grip that offer of hope. That was the last thing she remembered. Dee Ann drifted into a deep sleep.  When she awoke, everything was different.

Needless to say, she didn’t die and recovered far beyond anything she could have expected. Today Dee Ann Green feels better than she has for the last 25 years. Why? Because she took hold of the hand  that does not let go.

For those who believe and trust at the end of the road, there is no end. You can find that Hand. Just reach out.
