MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!

Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.

AND THEY WOULD HAVE KILLED HIM BUT…

Does praying make any difference? Secularists conclude you’re only talking to yourself when you pray. And yet, my files are filled with stories of people praying and extraordinary results followed. The difference is that secularists only know one dimension, the physical world. People of faith live in two worlds: the natural and the supernatural. Prayer connects them to that realm beyond the physical. Results follow.

You can’t “see” the transcendent, but you can experience moments when the “Beyond” breaks into the here and now. Recently, my childhood friend Bill Beuthel shared such a story with me. We grew up together in the mountains of Colorado and today Bill lives in Denver. His pastor told him this story.

Jodie Berndt was serving  as a missionary in a field hospital in Africa. To pick up supplies, he had to travel by bicycle for two days, camping at night halfway from home. The next day he traveled to the nearest town where he picked up money and supplies before returning in another two days back to the small field hospital.

When he arrived in the village, two men were fighting savagely. One man was so seriously injured that the missionary helped the defeated man by dressing his wounds. During his nursing care, Berndt shared the story of his faith and witnessed to the bleeding man. Once he finished bandaging, he started back into the jungle only to return two weeks later. The man he had helped was waiting for him. The native shared that he knew Berndt had been carrying money and medicines. Even though the missionary had helped him, the injured man told him what they had planned to the contrary.

“We followed you back into the jungle,” the native said. “My friends and I knew you would have to camp overnight. We planned to wait until you went to sleep and then sneak in and kill you, along with stealing the money and medicines. We would have done so, but there were 26 guards surrounding you.”

Berndt had no idea what he was talking about. He laughed and was certain he was alone in the jungle. “No sir,” the native insisted. “My friends also saw the 26 guards. We were certain you were secure.”

Later when the missionary shared his story in a church service, a man in the congregation stood up and interrupted, asking if Berndt knew the exact date this occurred. He did. The congregant said, “Travel around the world changes the clock. Night in Africa is day here. On that day, I was moved to call some men in the church to gather with me and pray for your protection. The number who gathered to pray for your safety was exactly 26.”

Does prayer make a difference? The 26 intercessors can testify that it does.
