THE MIRACLE IN YOUR BACKYARD
You have been living in a miracle!
On this July 4th, we would do well to remember one of the greatest miracles that has unfolded in the sweep of history. The record of the past is filled with incidents of cruel despots, treacherous kings, and evil empires. People with varying ideas were persecuted for their diversity. In 1492, Jews were given three days to get out of Spain and the Inquisition began. The stories go on and on until they come to 1776. On that July 4th, the miracle began.
A miracle is by definition an intervention by God. As the Founding Fathers gathered in Philadelphia, they penned a Constitution that declared citizens had God given citizens’ rights. Freedom did not come from political compromise, social agreement, or personal independence. Our rights have been granted to us from the Almighty.
Not everyone remembers that fact. Chaos in the streets often arises because people violently pursue what “they” want. They can do so because this country grants them a God given right to freedom of speech. While there are injustices and prejudices, everyone has access to a fair trial and are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Why? Because the Constitution grants us these “God given” rights.
Does America have faults? Too numerous to name. But in the midst of the inadequacies, we continue on with resilience and determination because so many of our ancestors came here seeking a land where they could worship God as they chose without intervention. No secular interpretation can deny the religious underpinning of this country.
On this July 4th, we can sing “God Bless America,” because He has. Let us rise above our irritations and disagreements and embrace the transcendent reality. This country has been and shall continue to be a miracle. Your backyard remains secure.
