HOPE WAS GONE UNTIL SHE …

Perhaps, you’ve never given much thought as to what occurs in Holy Communion. Some churches view the sacrament as only a memory of the past. We believe in the “Real Presence,” meaning Jesus meant what he said in Mark 14:22-23 “Take eat this is my body.” Many people affirm the fact without appropriating the reality. Jesus Christ can be really present to us. (Of course, that’s miraculous.)

This past week I observed Penny Randall receiving the promise.

I’ve known Penny for a number of years as we are both authors.  Her forthcoming book is about her adventures in Africa. However, she shared with me a chronic problem that could eventually swallow her life in pain if not medically treated. Her ulcerated colon threatened her ongoing well-being. Moreover, a shoulder injury had been medically diagnosed as demanding a shoulder replacement surgery. She wanted to know about angels because fear had been swallowing her emotionally. Penny was crying out for help.

I suggested an alternative. Wearing my priestly attire and stole, we would gather some friends and have Holy Communion, a Eucharist and ask the manifest reality of Jesus Christ to touch Penny’s physical struggles. As she received the elements, she would ask the risen Christ literally to fill her life.

Earlier, I had learned that the Faithful who know Jesus is there in Holy Communion, often don’t appropriate what His presence promises. I instructed Penny to receive the bread and wine and ask the risen Christ to fill her life with Himself and come as a healing presence.  After receiving the elements, I ask Penny to allow the Savior to fill her inner life and restore her body and soul. As she prayed, I silently slipped away and left her house.

On Monday, Penny took a medical exam for the ulcerated colon. The result? The internal medicine doctor found no sign of an ulcerated colon.

Two days later she had an orthopedist examine her shoulder for a replacement. The orthopedist advised her, “Let’s forget about an operation and replacement. Your shoulder is so much better, there’s no reason to do something else.”

The manifest reality of the risen Christ in the sacrament had brought recovery and healing into Penny Randell’s body and life. A miracle? You bet. Could that happen to you. Absolutely. Find a church that believes in the Real Presence in the bread and the wine. As people are being served, ask Jesus to fill you with Himself. Christ in you; you in Christ. It’s just that basic.

THE HAND REACHED OUT AND…

This past week stories about China have filled the news. Secretary Blinken met with his counterpart and President Xi. China has obviously come a long, long way since the revolutionary war with Chairman Mao. But here’s a story you didn’t hear about.

The somewhat underground Christian church is growing at a phenomenal rate. Ninety percent of the rapid growth is fueled by healing miracles. In the countryside where medical facilities are limited, this is particularly true reports Edmond Tang of the University of Birmingham.

I witnessed this with my own eyes.

I was invited to bring a team of Americans involved with healing ministry to Taiwan. We flew in and immediately were put on a train to ride up into the mountains. A service of praise and worship was already underway with the church overflowing and people hanging out the windows. People were everywhere trying to get into the old white worn church building. I was immediately ushered in and asked to preach.

To my astonishment, every word I said had to be translated into Mandarin and then translated again into the dialect of the congregation. The task was arduous and in five minutes I wasn’t even sure what I was saying or thinking. The confusion was the order of the day.

Finally, I told the congregation that I didn’t come to preach, but to pray for them. “Would anyone want to be prayed for?” Nearly the entire church stepped forward. My team was almost ready to run out the back door.

A woman jumped out of a pew holding a little boy maybe six or seven years old. The child swung his arms and legs in slow gyrating spastic movements. In addition to looking intellectually disabled (mental retardation), his eyes did not focus, but appeared to jerk uncontrollably. The mother stopped in front of me and started speaking in some local dialect. I didn’t have a clue what she was saying.

The Holy Spirit seemed to whisper, “Demon possession.”

While I’d heard of such, I’d never seen it. All I could do was remember what the Apostles did in the New Testament.  I put my hand on the child’s head and began casting out whatever was possessing him.

The woman slowly sank to the floor as I prayed with all the passion I had in my being. In about a minute and a half, the boy stopped slapping at the air and slumped. His arms dropped and his legs stopped kicking. I kept praying but could feel his entire body relax. Abruptly, he stood up, smiled, and waved like a normal person. His eyes were steady and normal. He had become a regular little boy.

Years have passed since that afternoon, but two conclusions have stayed. There is evil in the world and people can become trapped in it’s grip. At the same time, the power of the Holy Spirit can correct the problem immediately. We don’t have to be afraid.

Perhaps, in the Western World we don’t encounter this phenomenon as they do in the East. Nevertheless, it remains another sign that God’s power is available to any and all. Remember miracles never cease!

LARRY WAS BLEEDING TO DEATH UNTIL…

Years ago, Linda Correa asked me if there was a God. I  told her about my experience encountering the light of His presence and that answered her questions. My answer stayed in her mind through the following decades. Last week my wife and I had a delightful evening at Larry and Linda Correa’s home. We had not seen them in years. My answer much earlier came up again when she told me what had happened to Larry.

Larry Correa had developed a physical condition that exploded into a full-scale disaster.  He developed a condition labeled varices that scarred his esophagus and caused bleeding to erupt.  He was rushed to the hospital, hemorrhaging and received four pints of blood. Their nurse daughter Jamie worked in the I.C. Unit and cried out, “Mother, he’s dying!”

Larry survived that moment but spent months in the hospital struggling. Next, he developed septicemia. An enormous boil developed on his foot and then swelling began spreading up his leg. The blood disease is often deadly.

As the complications mounted, the doctors told Linda there was no hope. Larry couldn’t survive all these complications. The infections and blood disease were too great. She was advised to prepare for his demise.

Stunned! Linda felt completely helpless, like a train going off a cliff. Void of all hope, she began driving home in a fog completely out of control. Somewhere on the Kilpatrick Turnpike driving across Oklahoma City, Linda began crying and screamed out, “Oh God! Give me a miracle! Please! Please! Oh Lord, help me!”

Abruptly a friend she hadn’t seen in a long time came to mind and she drove to her house. Linda had no idea the woman was a spiritual person, but she blurted out what had happened with Larry. In turn, the lady began telling Linda about God’s love. When she left, Linda was certain God had heard her prayer.

And the miracle? Larry sat at the table listening to Linda tell me this story. Larry Correa is alive today.

As Linda shared their experience, I was reminded how often when people are pushed beyond their capacities and are desperate that they experience a miracle. When we reach our limits, we stand ready to received our heavenly Father’s limitlessn

Linda told me, “I just stayed too busy to pay attention to what God was saying to me through the years. It took coming to the end of my rope to wake up to what had been there all the time.

Linda made an important discovery. Don’t wait for a disaster to wake you up. Your heavenly Father stands by your side right now. Remember miracles never cease!

IT LOOKED LIKE A DISASTER UNTIL…

Recently I was searching through my files where I keep interviews with people who experienced divine interventions. Sometimes they were instantaneous miracles and other times they were demonstrations of grace that stretched over a longer period of time. Big or little, these touches of the miraculous mirrored the love of God. These recoveries from struggles remain a witness to the power of prayer and intercession. Each person discovered the difference prayer can make.

Here’s several of those experiences that I found in my records. (names are anonymous)

Alice Chambers’ first son brought pure joy, but as she was working with the baby, Alice slipped and fell, splitting her head open. The fall proved to be highly disorienting causing her to have a problem sleeping. Alice accidently took an overdose of sleeping pills. As she recovered from the fall and the pills, the doctors found Alice had also developed a disintegrating lung. The new mother had suddenly become surrounded by disaster.

Friends and her pastor began praying earnestly for Alice. They prayed constantly day and night. The problems soon slipped away and all discomfort disappeared. Alice’s lung stayed healthy till the day she dies. For the rest of her life Alice remained an advocate of prayer.

Bob Ryan had been in counseling with one of our professional therapists, trying to find relief from deep seated bitterness.  In addition, Bob enrolled in a men’s Bible Study group. The church’s men’s fellowship prayed for each other and Bob in particular wanted them to intercede for him. The counseling brought important insight and understanding, but the bitterness lingered. Bob’s problem exceeded the therapist ability to completely resolve the issue.

Bob’s men’s prayer group surrounded him, laid on hands, and prayed fervently. During one of the sessions, Bob suddenly realized all bitterness was gone. The lingering struggle had vanished and was replaced by a new gentler spirit. The prayers completed the therapist’s task. 

Then there’s Sam Silver. San had always been an outstanding athlete and naturally went on to play college football. Of course, college ball is an exceedingly rough sport. Sam injured his knee so badly that an operation was required.

Jack Phillips roamed the hospital halls and had a ministry praying for people. He stumbled across Sam Silver who’s knee wasn’t doing so good. Jack began to pray.

As Sam prepared to leave the hospital, the doctor looked at the x-rays and shook his head. “I’d like to take the credit, but I can’t. Your knee is not only improved, it is better than it was before the injury. Amazing”.

What happened? Sam Silver knew. Prayer.

Does prayer work? These three friends of mine agree. Prayer is the path that leads to a miracle.

DELIVER US FROM EVIL

One of the persistent themes that stretches back to the beginning of time is a question about the existence of evil. Is it evil or Evil?  Are these assaults personal or products of chance. Surely, we cannot miss the fact that our world is immersed in a struggle with destruction. From the Sudan to Ukraine, everywhere we look we see tragic death. Guns are assaulting our schools and as in addition leaving innocent Blacks killed by police as well as panicked citizens who supposedly accidently killing someone on the front porch. The number one cause of death of children in America is shootings.

Can you avoid having to face the reality of evil or Evil?

Let’s put this question on a personal level. Could you be assaulted by evil in terms of sickness, depression, or some form of psychological distress? It’s possible. And if so, you need to know about how the miraculous can deliver you from the consequences.

This past week one of my Spiritual Directors called me with her experience. A Spiritual Director is trained to help people recognize how they can grow in faith and maturity. Betty Smith offered healing services.  (Names are changed for anonymity sake)

Betty called me about a man with a painful physical struggle that he couldn’t identify. Barely speaking more than a mumble, George wasn’t sure how to even describe what was wrong… he just hurt. Betty was working with him through a Zoom computer system because he was halfway across the country.

Betty has always been extraordinarily perceptive. She began to sense a strange shade under George’s chin. The more Betty looked, the more certain she was that a dark entity had settled in just beneath George’s heart. Betty suspected that something evil had entered into this man’s body.

When Betty inquired about his personal history, she learned that several generations back his family had been involved in a cult like experience when people were offered as a sacrifice to Evil. The result of that encounter had never left the family. George was now the final result. Evil lingered in his body.

As usual, Betty asked the angelic hosts to help her set George free. As they prayed for a specific release, George could feel evil being pulled out of his body. His demeanor changed and he became more talkative. George now felt great.

We need to stay balanced on this subject. However, we must also be realistic. Evil exists out there and can attach itself to a person. Don’t worry. One of the aspects of Divine intervention is that the power of the Holy Spirit will set you free. Don’t worry; just be aware.

AND A MIRACLE HEALED…Easter celebrates the greatest miracle of all existence. The Resurrection of Jesus the Christ was the final defeat of death and Evil. Two- thousand years later, we continue to bow humbly before this hallmark event in human history. A blow was struck against sickness and deterioration. Sure, the battle with human infirmity is not over, but like the D-Day landing on Normandy Beach, we are in the final struggle.

Dana Taylor can verify that fact.

Dana developed a problem of abnormal bleeding and went straight to the doctor. He assured her that she was not pregnant, gave her some pills, and sent her home. However, Dana suspected that the hormones and pills only masked the real problem. During a church service, Dana prayed, “Lord, if I brought this on myself, could you please show me how?” Immediately an answer popped in her mind. She had refused to let herself become pregnant again. In fact, negating the possibility had become somewhat of an obsession with her and she was making herself sick. Dana immediately released the obsession into God’s care. However, she suspected the real physical problem lingered.

And the problem did return with the doctor suggesting a surgical procedure that Dana didn’t want. She called a friend who agreed to pray with her for the next four days. Laying down, Dana placed her hands on her abdomen and began to pray. Immediately her hands became hot and she kept praying that Jesus would heal her condition. For three days, Dana followed the same pattern and kept seeking a miraculous healing.

On the fourth day, as she was praying Dana felt a surge of energy like an electrical wave shooting through her body from her head to her toes, leaving her with a tingling sensation. Three times this empowerment charged through her body. The force completely overwhelmed her.

Finally, Dana prayed, “Lord I don’t think I can take this anymore. Please let me sleep.” She drifted away. When she awoke the next morning, Dana was healed. She was fine.

Dana has always been a firm believer in the Christian faith and the Resurrection. In her hour of need, she experienced the promise of the power of life over death, wellness over illness. Does the power of the Resurrection still extend to us? Dana would enthusiastically say “Yes!”

As you reflect on Easter … just remember miracles never cease!

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE OTHER SIDE? 

This past Friday I attended an extraordinary dedication of the shrine to the first martyr of the American Roman Catholic Church. I had just finished writing a book on the life of Father Stanley Rother who was martyred defending the Christian faith in Guatemala. For Father Rother to be officially recognized as a Saint, there must be a miracle resulting from the martyr’s intervention. Since I had been writing about similar “near-death” type happenings and was writing about Fr. Rother, although a Protestant, I wondered about what had happened after this important person had crossed the threshold of eternity.

Just as I was finishing writing the book The Making of a Martyr, I got a phone call from the person editing my manuscript. She told me about a story that appeared on a Tulsa television station and  in The Daily Oklahoman July 27, 2022. Here’s a reproduction of part of that publication.

Johnny Workman believes he’s here today because he got help from beyond. “I felt something kind of hit me in the back and when I turned, I got trapped,” he explains. Trapped by a run-away 30,000-pound asphalt roller. The weight of two elephants pinned him against the roller, crushing him. 

“I saw myself in the mirror, I saw myself changing colors and then I blacked out,” he says. 

Workman suffered 27 fractures to his chest alone. While in a medically induced coma, his family placed a medal of Blessed Stanley Rother on Workman’s chest and prayed for the intersession of the Priest who grew up in Okarche, Oklahoma. 

“I believe that’s when it happened—the miracle,’ says Workman. Workman remains unwavering in the vision he experienced while unconscious. “He [Fr. Stanley Rother] picked me up and we were walking together- Mother Mary on one side and he was on the other. Stanley Rother grabbed me by the hand, and we were walking. [I] don’t know if we were going to heaven.”

Suddenly, Johnny Workman woke up in a hospital. The doctors were flabbergasted.  

Workman describes his unexpected recovery has nothing short of miraculous. “Doctors nurses and staff would tell me almost every day I was lucky to be alive.” 

A letter of his account has been delivered to the Oklahoma City Archdiocese describing his now healed body as the result of more than good luck. 

“Maybe it’s a miracle in the churches- but I know with 100% fact that it was a miracle in my eyes,” says Workman. 

Most Protestants generally wouldn’t know what to say about this kind of story. Roman Catholics and the Orthodox Churches would have no problem accepting it. Wherever you are, it’s an event that challenges your thoughts. Don’t forget that many churches say the Apostles Creed every Sunday affirming “we believe in the communion of the saints.”

FINDING A PATH

My interest in miracles began through a totally unexpected encounter. A friend invited me to attend a non-denominational gathering called Camp Farthest Out, a name given from the location where the movement began. The group emphasized love and healing prayer. As a college student, I certainly wasn’t into that type of expression, but was I ever in for a big surprise.

During an afternoon prayer session, I witnessed a woman healed in an eye that had been blind since she was five-years old. I was shocked, but knew I had stumbled on to some type of new encounter, experience, expression, whatever, that I couldn’t explain or understand. Students in my university would not have believed in such a thing, but I had seen the occurrence with my own eyes.

Ten years later I came down with acute Nephritis, a serious kidney disease, causing my kidneys to begin shrinking. Once shrinkage begins, at that time there was no cure except to go on dialysis (not much hope for a young man four decades ago). In another blog, I will describe the amazing experience that not only cured my illness but restored my kidneys which then was not considered possible. I had received a miracle (when I wasn’t even open to such a possibility).

When I tried to tell ministers and pastors that I had experienced a healing, most looked at me like I was still sick. The sympathetic didn’t know how to respond. Fundamentally, no one knew how to make any sense of my recovery. They just let it go.

That’s the problem. In most of today’s churches, folks don’t know what to say and let the matter drop. Pastors who don’t want to be thought of as fanatics won’t explore the subject. A high percentage of television evangelists have been discredited and clergy don’t want to go through that washing machine ringer. The subject of miracles simply hasn’t been considered in many, many places. My concern is to see this blindness healed. 

What can we learn from these two experiences that initiated my interest in miracles?

First, illness, sickness, and brokenness are an invitation for God to work. While disease and disaster often make us run for cover, these maladies are also an invitation to turn to our heavenly Father with new expectations for His touch. God works directly and indirectly. Sometimes, He uses doctors, hospitals, and surgery. On other occasions, the Lord works alone. The basic issue for us is to recover trust in Him.

Second, we need to become open to trusting Him in every situation. Regardless of how events transpire, we expect Him to accomplish His purposes. Many people never pause to recognize they are simply not open to seek a Divine intervention. Open the doors of your heart and see what follows.

And remember miracles never cease!
