MIRACLES NEVER CEASE!
Rev. Robert L. Wise, Ph.D. explores the world of divine interventions from an objective point of view. An Archbishop in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches with a Ph.D., Rev. Wise relates his interviews with persons who experienced the touch of God.
SHE SAW NO HOPE UNTIL …
Last week I shared an encounter in Tulsa, Oklahoma when I was talking with one of my colleagues about some of her spiritual experiences. Margie McCaslin is a clergyperson and bishop in Denver, Colorado. I was fascinated by one of her spiritual experiences. She had one of those moments that turns a secularist on their ear. Margie reached back into the First Century and took a page right out of the Book of Acts.
A friend wanted Margie to go with her to Switzerland because her husband couldn’t go. The friend had a niece in the German speaking sector, and they could visit her. Even though Margie couldn’t speak a word of German, the trip sounded like fun.
The niece had a boyfriend named Omar who spoke only German and didn’t understand any English. Nevertheless, when he learned Margie was a Christian clergyperson, he was enthusiastic to meet her. Omar knew virtually nothing about the Christian faith but wanted to learn about Jesus. The young man seemed to have an urgency about discovering what this rabbi was all about.
Margie was more than ready to share, but realized they had a serious communication problem. Neither one could understand the other. She began to pray fervently. “Lord, we’ve got a big complication. Omar can’t understand me, nor I him. Please help us connect.”
They sat down together and Margie took a deep breath. “You want to talk about Jesus?”
“Yes,” Omar said.
Margie was taken back. How could he have understood her?”
“You know about Jesus of Nazareth from the Bible?”
Omar nodded his head. “Yes, I do.”
Margie was stunned. They were communicating perfectly. Just as in the Book of Acts on the Day of Pentecost, where there were a multitude of different languages but everyone understood saying, “we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues.” The exact experience was happening again.
Omar understood Margie’s every word and professed a new faith. He wanted her to baptize him. Even though it was late at night, they walked down to a lake in the dark, but a storm started blowing in. Nevertheless, Margie and Omar walked into the lake. There in the total darkness, she immersed him. As he came up out of the cold, cold water, a light abruptly bounced off the water. But from where?
Omar immediately wanted to take Holy Communion. With the extreme time difference from America, Margie was exhausted. Nevertheless, a deeply touching service followed. Finally, at 3:00 in the morning, they went back to the hotel and parted company. Margie shut her hotel room door and whispered, “Please, God. My body hurts so bad. I’m exhausted. Please give me some energy.” She staggered into the shower.
When she stepped out dripping wet, Margie realized that all exhaustion had vanished. She was reenergized! God had moved again.
Pentecost was a long, long time ago? Not for Margie and Omar. And not so for us either. Remember. Miracles never cease.
